TULANE GREEN WAVE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NOTES

TREY-MENDOUSKolby Morgan and Leslie Vorpahl have been prolific from three-point range this season, lifting the Green Wave to a .367 shooting per-centage from beyond the arc, which ranks first in The American and 33rd in the nation. Last season, the Wave shot .310 as a team. After a 3-for-3 day from deep range at Ole Miss, Vorpahl’s three-point percentage shot up to .450 which ranks 1st in the league and 46th in the nation. Kolby Morgan follows very closely behind at .444, which ranks 3rd in The American and 53rd in the country. When it comes to three-pointers per game, Morgan leads the conference at 2.7 per game, while Vorpahl ranks 7th at 2.0. Tulane hit a season best nine made three-pointers at Florida State last month. THE MORGAN TRAILA year after her 12.2 points per game led Kolby Morgan to become the first freshman in school history to be an all-conference selec-tion and the ninth Tulane player to make the All-Freshmen Team, the standout guard has already shown improvement in year two. Mor-gan’s 17.9 points per game ranks 4th in The American and 66th in the nation.

The New Orleans native surpassed her amount of 20+ scoring games from last season (2) with three after the first seven games, including a career high of 26 points at then No. 6/14 Florida State. Her 10 made field goals (10-of-22) in Tallahassee also tied her career high.

Versus in-state rival LSU on Nov. 23, Morgan recorded her second career double-double with 18 points and a career tying 11 rebounds.

Thus, Morgan leads the team in scoring aver-age, made field goals, field goal attempts, made three-point field goals, three-point at-tempts, made free throws, free throw attempts and minutes. VORPAHL ASSISTING IN VICTORYInheriting the starting point guard position in her junior season, Leslie Vorpahl has cer-tainly made the most of it thus far. Not only is Vorpahl averaging the second most points on the team with 10.8, but is also distributing the ball well with a 5.2 assists per game average. That assist average ranks 3rd in The American and 46th in the country. In addition, Vorpahl’s 1.1 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks 13th in the conference as well. Vorpahl has gotten at least three assists in every game, including a career high of 10 vs Jackson State.

WHO’S HOTKolby Morgan scored her ninth straight game with double-digit points, topping her eight-game start to her freshman campaign last year. Tulane’s two seniors Chinwe Duru and Tierra Jones are both heating up. Duru has amassed 33 points and 17 rebounds in the last three games, while shooting a combined 11-for-14 from the field. As a result, Duru’s field goal percentage has jumped from .515 at the end of November to .581, which ranks first on the team.

Meanwhile, Jones has shot a combined 11-for-16 in the last four games and has recorded two 12-point scoring performances in the last three. In those last three games, Jones has also col-lected 20 total rebounds and gotten to the free throw line 20 times. QUARTER BREAKDOWNAs NCAA Division I women’s basketball adjusts to the new four quarter scheme, it was time to look at how Tulane’s scoring as gone thus far in the new format. Below is a breakdown of the scoring in Tulane/Opponent format:

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 148/119 160/148 141/138 162/168 Thus, Tulane has held an advantage in all but the fourth quarter where they suffer a -4 differential, but also boast the most total points scored. The Green Wave have jumped on opponents early, boasting a +29 scoring dif-ferential in the first quarter. ALL-PARADISE JAM TEAMAfter three games vs tough competition in the Paradise Jam down in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Kolby Morgan was named to the All-Tournament team. Morgan averaged 17.7 points, while shooting 48.6 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc. In fact, 10 of Morgan’s 21 total points came in the fourth quarter in Tulane’s 67-62 win over Virginia. MAKING THEM COUNTJunior guard Courtnie Latham has been excep-tional from the free-throw line to start the sea-son, only missing five free throws. Her 26-of-31 mark is good for a .839 free-throw percentage which ranks 8th in The American and 76th in the nation. Last year, Latham shot .778 from the charity stripe.

THE AMERICAN REACHING THE CENTURY MARKSenior center Chinwe Duru just recently crossed over the 100 games played mark, currently sitting at 102. So far in her senior season, Duru is averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds, while shooting .581 from the floor. Over her four-year career, Duru has shot .472. THE MAGIC NUMBERSThrough 9 games this season, certain stats have indicated when to expect a Green Wave victory. -- Tulane is 6-1 when they reach the 60-point plateau. -- 6-0 when holding opposition under 70 points -- 6-1 when shooting above 40% -- 5-0 when opposition shoots below 40% -- 4-0 when Tulane outrebounds its opponent -- 6-0 when Tulane shoots more free throws Important to note that Tulane is 3-0 in games decided by five points or less. In addition, Tu-lane has yet to lose after leading at either the start of the second, third or fourth quarter. 2015 NCAA TOURNEY STRETCHTulane’s opening schedule was one of the toughest in recent memory, as the Green Wave clashed with five 2015 NCAA Tournament teams in their first six games.

In all, Tulane went 2-3 in that span, earning victories against both Little Rock and LSU. Tulane almost knocked off a then No. 6 ranked Florida State team in Tallahassee, but was edged out 78-72.

LOUISIANA BRAGGIN’ RIGHTSOn Nov. 23, Tulane hosted LSU inside The Fieldhouse, where they bested the Tigers 67-63. The Green Wave utilized an 18-4 third quarter to garner a lead that they would later protect with 10 fourth quarter free throws. Tulane has now defeated LSU in five of their past six encoun-ters, as all five wins have been by single digits.

AMERICAN WEEKLY HONORSJust a few weeks into the season and a Tulane trio has already garnered some weekly awards from the American Athletic Conference. On Nov. 23, the conference office named Taylor Emery its Freshman of the Week. Emery tallied

a season best 14 points vs Jackson State, fol-lowed by an eight point performance at Florida State. The Tampa native shot a combined 10-of-17 from the field which equated to a .588 shooting percentage. Kolby Morgan was also named an Honor Roll recipient in the same week, after averaging 23.5 points on 53.1 percent shooting, includ-ing an 8-for-14 mark from three-point range. Morgan was named to the Honor Roll again on Nov. 30 after averaging 17.7 ppg in the Paradise Jam Tournament. Finally, Leslie Vorpahl made the Honor Roll af-ter week one play in which she earned a team leading 14 points, resulting in Tulane defeating Little Rock in their season opener. SMELLING SOMETHING FOULTulane and No. 6/14 Florida State waged quite the back-and-forth battle in Tallahassee on Nov. 19, but after 11 ties and nine lead chang-es, the Seminoles edged the Green Wave, 78-72. FSU utilized its size to outrebound Tulane 51-32 and garner a 36-22 points in the paint advantage. Even more impressive in Tulane nearly pulling off the upset was the fact that the squad got tagged for 32 fouls, which was 11 more than last year’s season high. Those 32 fouls, not only resulted in starters Leslie Vorpahl and Tierra Jones fouling out, but also 43 Florida State free throw attempts, compared to Tulane’s 17. DOUBLE-DOUBLE...DOUBLE?Leslie Vorpahl nearly made history in Tulane’s 92-49 win vs Jackson State on Nov. 17. The junior first recorded her first career double-double, scoring 15 points and career high 10 assists. Then, sitting with eight rebounds by half, Vorpahl couldn’t manage to reel in two more boards for the first triple-double in the Coach Stockton era. Vorpahl also finished with a career best six steals in the game. EARNING THE FREEBIESIt has been an up and down tale from the free throw line thus far this season. Starting with the positive, the Green Wave are getting to charity stripe often, as their 213 total attempts ranks first in The American and 27th in the country. In addition, the team’s 15.2 made free throws per game is up from last year’s 11.7.

In each of the first two contests, the Wave got to the free-throw line exactly 31 times, convert-ing 22 against Little Rock, which already tied the season high from 2014-15 season.

TULANE GREEN WAVE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NOTESTulane also turned to its free throw shooting to earn the victory against LSU on Nov. 23. With their last field goal of the contest occurring at the 5:30 mark in the fourth quarter, the Wave’s Tierra Jones, Leslie Vorpahl and Courtnie Latham combined for 10 made free throws to seal the win. In all, Tulane shot 76.0 percent from the line against LSU. The Wave again relied on its free throw shoot-ing down the stretch in the fourth quarter in their 67-62 win vs Virginia, knocking down nine from the line in the last period.

Finally, in the final 76 seconds at Ole Miss, Duru scored six of the team’s final seven points, four of which came from the free throw line, to ice the victory, 61-59.

However, the big negative lies in the overall free throw percentage as Tulane is shooting just .643 which ranks 9th in the conference.

STOCKTON ADDS TO THE FAMILYIn the early signing day period, Coach Stockton welcomed three additions to the Green Wave family in Brogan Jones (Little Rock, Arkansas), Kayla Manuirirangi (Hawera, New Zealand) and Maddison Wells (Winter Haven, Florida).

Jones is a 6’4” center out of North Little Rock High School, where she led the Charging Wildcats to the Arkansas State semi-finals and the Naples Holiday Shootout National Division Champion-ship. Currently ranked the 15th best post in the country by ESPN, Jones was an all-conference selection all three years and was selected to try out for the U17 USA Basketball team in 2014.

Jones also gained a lot of national attention

while playing four years under Coach Gene Alexander and John Thrower with the Arkansas Lady Hawks, where she was later recognized by Tulane. In addition, Jones spent this past summer playing with Texas Elite Adidas 17U Simmons, where she won both the Super 64 National Cham-pionship Tournament and the Adidas National Championship Tournament as well.

Next is Kayla Manuirirangi, a 5’7” guard hail-ing from Hawera, New Zealand. Manuirirangi has spent the last two years at New Plymouth Girls’ High School where she led the squad to two straight playoff appearances. In fact, in 2014, Manuirirangi guided her team to not only a national high school championship where she was named the tournament MVP, but also a 3x3 tournament title as well.

Manuirirangi has also spent a lot of time on the national scene for New Zealand as well, dating as far back as 2012 when she made the U16 national squad. Manuirirangi then followed that up by captaining the U17 team in 2013 and the U18 squad in 2014. Later that year, Manuirirangi began representing New Zealand with the Junior Tall Ferns (U19).

Last, but certainly not least, is Maddison Wells, who will be celebrating a homecoming of sorts as the 6’1” forward was originally from New Orleans before moving to her current residency in Florida. At Winter Haven High School, Wells helped produce back-to-back 20+ win seasons and playoff appearances: 22-8 in 2013-14 and 28-4 in 2014-15.

Wells also honed her skills while playing for Kenny Kallina with the FGB travel team. Kallina describes Wells as a lefty forward who is an aggressive rebounder and a strong defender. Listed as a 4-star recruit by JumpOffPlus Scout-ing, Wells competed for FGB this past summer in the Tournament of Champions in Suwanee and Nashville, as well as the Summer Basketball

Emery, who attended Freedom High in Tampa, led the entire state of Florida in scoring with 36.5 points per game, which also ranked No. 2 in the country. Emery’s 1,059 points over her senior campaign not only set a new state record for high school women’s basketball in Florida, but also helped Freedom High reach the Regional finals. In addition, her 69.0 per-cent shooting over her high school career led to 2,689 career points, a new Hillsborough County record.
