AIA DC. emerging architects committe 01
The AIA|DC Emerging Architects Committee (EAC) promotes education, leadership development, and community involvement among intern architects, Associate AIA members, and architects who are licensed ten years or less. We encourage the next generation of architects to start leading our community by heading committees, organizing events, participating in workshops, or simply by attending our events.
The committee has four major objectives: PROVOKE and talk about the future of the profession, ADVOCATE for emerging architects, OUTREACH to other AIA members, associated disciplines, and the community, and MENTOR the next generation of architects. Check out the AIA|DC calendar for upcoming programs.

Deane Madsen, Assoc. AIA, LEED Green Assoc. Outreach Advisor. ARCHITECT Magazine
Deane grew up in Boston, where for a particularly memorable birthday, he watched the implosion of the Travelers Insurance Building. His fascination with buildings continued from his early years of Lego city planning through later forays into amateur architectural photography. He completed an M.Arch. I program at UCLA under the tutelage of Neil Denari, Sylvia Lavin, Richard Weinstein, Dana Cuff, and others, learning along the way that imploding buildings, while always entertaining, isn’t the only way to make an impact in the world of architecture.

A public product design competition is in the works in conjunction with a major furniture manufactorer in the fall. It will kick off with a roundtable discussion with other product and furniture designers who would act as the judges for the competition.
Thesis Showcase
product design competition
Every summer a small group of recent architecture graduates presents their thesis projects to members of the AIA and the public. Each presenter speaks for ten minutes, after which an emcee from the EAC moderates questions from the audience and helps to draw connections between the thesis projects. This program aims to bridge the gap between recent graduates and practicing architects by providing an opportunity for practitioners to view a sample of the work emerging from local architecture schools.
