A Prayer for July4th

Almighty andever-living God, wehumbly praise youfor the nation inwhich you have

allowed us to live. We cherish itswonder and its beauty. We arethankful for its fruitful lands, itsbountiful waters, its great resourcesand its unlimited opportunities.

We thank you for our foundingfathers and mothers, and for theirforesight, special wisdom, andsteadfast courage in establishingfreedom and a lasting document offairness.

Stir up within each of us the willto be good stewards of all theblessings of the land we love. Amen.

Communing with GodAfter Apollo 11 landed on the

moon on July 20, 1969, pilot BuzzAldrin requested via radio thatpeople pause to give thanks for theachievement in their own way. Whenhis broadcast ended, Aldrin read averse from the Gospel of John andtook communion, which his churchhad sent to space with him.

“It was interesting for me tothink: the very first liquid everpoured on the moon, and the veryfirst food eaten there, were thecommunion elements,” the astronautsaid. “At the time, I could think of nobetter way to acknowledge theenormity of the Apollo 11 experiencethan by giving thanks to God.”

Mighty to SaveDr. Kent Brantly, a U.S. medical

missionary who contracted the Ebolavirus last summer in Liberia, creditsa “mighty God” — and lots ofprayers — for his survival. Afterrecovering from the disease, Brantlyreturned to the North Carolinaheadquarters of Samaritan’s Purse, the group he’d been working with inAfrica.

He spoke about Deuteronomy 6,saying it’s important to remindothers of God’s acts. “I will never

grow tired of talking of this,” Brantlysaid. “I’m going to keep telling mystory so I can remember what Godhas done in my life.”

Then Brantly offered thischallenge: “Never think you’re just anormal person. If you’re pursuingGod’s calling in your life, he will useyou. Even if it’s a challengingcalling, even if you find yourself indifficult circumstances, he will giveyou what you need to be faithful tohim, even if it’s a whole army ofpeople praying for you. Share yourstory over and over and over so youcan remember we serve a mightyGod.”

Share your TalentsA talent is worth only what you

do with it. Imagine your talent as aplain bar of iron that’s worth about$5.00. That same bar of iron, whenmade into horseshoes would beworth more than $10. If made intoneedles, it would be worth around$3,500. And if turned into balancesprings for watches, its worth wouldbecome over $250,000!

What is your talent, and how areyou using it?

Stillness Can Heal“Be still, and

know that I am God!”(Psalm 46:10,NRSV). People whoseek silence and areopen to God’s presence testify thatsuch stillness and seeking can bringhealing. Tension is relieved, stressbegins to dissipate, one’s innerperson feels refreshed and thenearness of God becomes a reality. In the depth of stillness, God’s poweris present and restoring us towholeness.

Chapter X

The Charmed Circle of God’sLove

The Light shineth for thee,The Light shineth on thee,The Light shineth through thee,And through thee to bless the world.

This little stanza carries a charm. Asyou think of God's presence andpower, your thought of that presenceand power travels out from you inever-widening circles. What place isthere where God is not? What canyour thought touch on anywhere, ofwhatever nature, that is stronger thanGod? In the charmed circle of God'slove there is nothing to hate, nothingto fear.

If there is any condition in yourlife that causes you dread or worry, that seems antagonistic, that seemsmore than you can cope with, thatarouses uneasiness, a sense offriction, or insurgent uprisings inyour mind, pause and remember.Remind yourself:

I walk in the charmed circle ofGod's love.

I live in the midst of His love.In my life and in my thoughts I

am a medium of God's strength andwisdom and harmony and power.

I go with the currents of God'smighty love: never against.

I glorify God by letting nothingbut Him have power over me.

We are helped as soon as weperceive that all our conflict is reallymental. Our most insistent and in-sidious enemies are our ownreactions to human situations. Godwants to give us His guidance, butour thoughts are too noisy, tooconfused, too beleaguered withdoubts, too anxious, or too selfishand stubborn to be able to hear Him.In effect God says one thing only, over and over: "Let there be love."But this command, even if we catch a

note of it, we often misinterpret andwillfully disobey.

God's will is good will toward us,and God's will is for us to love. Ourpersonal will often prompts us tofear, shrink from, resent, or combatcertain conditions, circumstances, people. We do not want to love them,or do not see how we can. We drawback into our inner quiverings, impotences, aversions, rebellions. We are mistrustful, fearful. Butthrough and under all circumstancesGod says one thing: "Let there belove."

God will help us if we sincerelyseek Him and let Him. He knows theway out of all human dilemmas. Heis the answer.

Sometimes in the turmoil of ourdisorders it seems difficult to findHim, to feel sure of Him, tounderstand how He works, and tounify ourselves with His great lovingpower.

After my first marvelous healingthrough prayer, I was often distressedby undesirable situations in myworld and by uncontrollable doubts, indecisions, and embroilments withinmyself. My understanding of God,His laws, and His ways hadincreased-or had it? Sometimes 1 feltmore inadequate, baffled, and tornthan when 1 had first turned to Him.

One day, utterly discouraged, Itried to realize the Father's infoldinglove and wisdom. But my mind andheart were too full of other things:disappointments, fears, grievances, failings of my own and of otherpersons. Suddenly it was as if some-one spoke to me: "Lift yourself up!"

I was startled and abashed. Howsorry and mean my inner self mustlook to the Father-my shrunken, flabby spirit, discolored by suchugly, bitter things! The voicecontinued: "Come to yourself! Bestrong! For I have not given you aspirit of fear, but of courage and oflove and a sound mind!"

I weakly alibied: "I try to realizethat, Father, but everything about mekeeps going criss-cross, and keepspulling me down."

"Are these things stronger than Iam?" the voice questioned.

"Sometimes I don't seem able tofeel Your presence, Father," Ianswered. "The discord around me istoo strong. I know that my worstenemy is the negative thoughtsstored in my own heart and mind, butwhen they rise against me I don'tknow how to deal with them."

"You don't have to deal withthem," He said. "Forget them;remember Me."

I was engrossed with a long list ofills and unanswered prayers that Iwished to bring to His attention. Butas I started formulating them Heinterposed, "Forget them! 'Be still, and know that I am God.' "

A dim sense of reassurance andpeace began stealing over me, as ifagainst my human will. Then myhuman self tried to resume itsquestionings: "But Father--"

"Don't resist! Don't youunderstand how you are resistingyour good?"

"But Father--""Don't argue! Trust Me. Trust!"

"How can I?" I pleaded. "Theseconditions are hard and difficult. These people---"

"Be still!" And then: "These uglythings you are so insistent about arefigments of the human mind. Why doyou let them sully, rend, and destroyyou? Forget them."

"But I can't, Father. I don't seemable-don't knowhow--"

"Peace!" commanded the Father."There is nothing but good. Let allcontentions be silenced. Let thesetorturing false images be dissolvedout of existence in your world. I willdissolve them, for I am the solution. The sole solution."

In the deep hush He spoke again:"There is nothing but My power-andMy power is love. Let! Let Me!"

As a sense of His meaning spreadinto my mortally sick and harriedsoul, I felt a wave of transcendentglory-peace. Yet the inadequate, craven part of me persisted: "While Iam here alone with You, Father, Ifeel strengthened and reassured. But

Page 5: Wings · 2015-06-29 · Truth Thoughts Quotable Quotes Calendar Humor God Is the Answer Dana Gatlin Law of Mind Action By Richard and Mary Alice Jafolla When the British tennis star

as soon as I go forth into the worldagain, into the difficult situations thatI dread--"

"You cannot go where I am not.Wherever you go, you can take withyou the remembrance of Me. WhereI am there is no dissension, noconflict, no disorder, no hate.Wherever you move, you move inthe circle of My love. You mustcarry this thought always with you. Itis your most imperative duty, yourgreatest blessing."

The flood of glory that pouredthrough me then was such as I hadnever experienced before. Guidance, wisdom, forgiveness, steadfastness, strength: not mine but the Lord's.Wherever I moved, I moved in thecharmed circle of God's love! A con-veyer of His blessing!

Thank God for the day when youdiscover there is no enemy, noconflict, excepting that which ragesin your own mind. Thank God for themoment when you realize that yourmost unruly thought can be broughtinto line. God can and will help yourule these inner tumults of confusionand strife. Your thoughts, reactions, and innermost feelings may seem torise up against your will, butconsider: Is this situation strongerthan the invisible but mighty tide ofomnipotent love? Your ownturbulent thoughts and instincts areembattled only because they aretrying to buck His mighty tide. Anymoment you can bring them into lineby bidding them to cease resistingand go along peacefully with thecurrent.

Spiritual mastery is the mostimportant battle you will ever win. Itis a difficult battle from the mortalsense. Only with God's help can youwin it. "Let Me!" says God. Godbrooks no conflict, and He wins bysilencing and dissolving everyrebellion and contention within yourown soul. It is only after this innervictory and in proportion as we aresteadfast that we can attain anabiding peace and poise within, asense of His love and wisdominfallibly controlling and directing

His entire creation. The Truth that Jesus taught is not

a philosophy of life, not a creed, buta way of living. Our consciousconnection with God is the importantthing. But our knowledge of God andof the Truth that Jesus proved is oflittle value to us unless it helps ussolve our daily problems. When wecatch a new glint of understanding,we must apply it and use it in everydepartment of our workaday world ifwe wish God to work through us andbless us.

The trouble is that we are allhumanly out to "get" something, ifonly what we term our "rights." Weare not willing to become a means ofexpression for the Father throughwhich His glorious all-providinggood may flow to bless us and ourworld. Every inner inharmony arisesfrom the fact that we are personallystriving to "get the best of" somesituation or some person. We arereally striving to exert our personalwill over the condition. Our self-concern, our self-importance, ouralmost unconquerable desire for self-justification cause more dissensionand stress than any other element inthe human make-up, leaping up andinsistently clamoring, “Me! Me!Me!” This is the human traitor withinourselves that bars us from yieldingto the will of the Father.

It requires faith and considerablepractice to change our mentalattitude. It helps me both in reducingmy instinct to "get" and my personalsense of effort or conflict to think ofmyself as a channel through whichGod's powerful essence of love andwisdom is continually passing. It isconveying itself through myreceptive mentality to be transmittedinto every department of my visibleworld. My realization of this makesit easier for me in the spirit of sin-cerity, conviction, and authority topronounce spontaneous, heartfeltblessings on adverse situations.

Try it. Bless your distressingcircumstance with a realization ofGod's presence and power. Blesswith thoughts of peace and joy the

persons who have affronted you.Bless the conditions that have fright-ened you. Bless the needs that youhave seemed unable to meet, thestrangers you pass on the .street.Bless even the drudgeries that youhave hitherto hated. You are achannel for God. Respect and honorHim by utilizing your full abilitywillingly and cheerfully. Feel aninterest in how well the smallest jobmay be done. This goes for theupkeep of your personal appearanceand your home too. You will besurprised at the improved resultsboth in yourself and in those aroundyou. You will feel better inside too. This is God's way of saying to you,"Well done, good and faithfulservant." It is God who gives theincrease, and as soon as you meritbetter circumstances, you may besure that God will see that you havethem.

God knows how; God istrustworthy. God always gives us theanswers if we put aside our limitedpersonal self and learn to go with theuniversal current. Once a very sickman was not expected to live throughthe night, and a Truth healer wassummoned. The healer entered thesickroom and sat silently at thebedside, immersing his whole con-sciousness in the loving Presence andPower. Presently the sick man stirredand looked up. "Why, it is easy!" hesaid. "Yes, it is easy," replied theother. "I hadn't expected it to be soeasy," said the sick man, droppingoff into peaceful sleep. When hewoke up, they knew that he was notgoing to die. "It is easy." Often inspasms of pain or fear these threewords have recalled me toremembrance and acted like atalisman. When we trustfully let Godtake charge, God does not fail.

I live in the love of God.Everywhere I go I carry God's lovewith me. There is no escaping it.Sustaining me, soothing me,protecting me--yes, even from myown willful, embroiled humanthoughts. Guiding me, strengtheningme, blessing me, and through me

Page 6: Wings · 2015-06-29 · Truth Thoughts Quotable Quotes Calendar Humor God Is the Answer Dana Gatlin Law of Mind Action By Richard and Mary Alice Jafolla When the British tennis star

blessing my whole world with Hislove and peace. I carry His realm ofpeace with me wherever my thoughtsmay travel. Wherever I go, whateverI do, I live, move, and have my beingin the charmed circle of God's love.

Here is an ancient French prayerthat expresses the creed of the onewho has found the Christ way of loveand loving service:

"Lord, make me an instrument ofThy peace. Where there is hate, mayI bring love; where offense, may Ibring pardon. May I bring union inplace of discord, Truth to replaceerror, faith where there is doubt, hope for despair, light where there isdarkness, joy to replace sadness.Make me not crave so much to beloved as to love. It is in giving thatone receives, in forgetting self thatone finds and wakens eternal life."

The inspiration of the Almightygiveth me understanding. "Not bymight, nor by power, but by mySpirit, saith Jehovah."

Love warms me with its spirit offorgiveness. My heart is warm withlove toward everybody and every-thing, and in divine order my mind,my life, my affairs, and my wholeworld are transformed.

I put my faith in His presence andpower. Father, I thank Thee thatThou hast broken through the re-sistance in my consciousness. In theboundless circle of Thy love Thyglorious will is done.

Happily, that is not so. God workswith us to bring into our liveswhatever we desire and expect. InGod-Mind, there is perfect good forus. God is the Master Builder, but wehave provided the blueprint.

It may be difficult to accept the factthat thoughts have any power. Afterall, what is a thought but a fewmillionths of a watt of electricitygenerated in a computer made offlesh, undetectable by all but themost sensitive equipment. How cansomething so minuscule change ourlives which are so complex?

It may even be tempting to think thata thought is not a real thing, but thereis no doubt that it is. If it were not, athought of fear could not increaseadrenalin and cholesterol, dilate yourblood vessels, and create the manyother physical changes in your body.If a thought were not a real thing, then a thought of love could notstrengthen the immune system andinfuse the body with other beneficialchemicals. Yes, thoughts are things.Thoughts are energy.

Years ago Albert Einstein said thatenergy and matter are related andthat neither is created nor destroyed.Rather, he said, energy is changedinto matter and matter into energy.

Since thoughts are energy, ourthoughts must affect us. There is noway that they cannot, any more thanthe energy of a fire cannot affect apiece of coal. Our "thought" energyis transmuted into the "matter," thecircumstances, of our lives.

Do you still want your life tochange? Then you will have tochange the blueprint, because theuniverse is plastic to your thoughtsand desires. The entire universe iswaiting for you to tell it what to do.Your thoughts are the blueprint fromwhich it works.

A Student of Truth

I feel that we in Unity arefortunate that those who first had todecide what to call themselvesdecided to call themselves Unitystudents, rather than Unity-ists orsomething of that sort.

To tell people what you are, youhave to say, “I am a Unity student,”or even better, “I am a student ofTruth.” A student of Truth is what Ihope I will always be – and what youwill always be, whether or not youare a Unity student. For is thereanything that anyone in any religionwants more than Truth?

-James Dillet Freeman

Five Basic Ideas that Make Upthe Unity Belief System

1. God is absolute good, every-where present.

2. Human beings have a spark ofdivinity within them, the Christ spiritwithin. Their very essence is of God,and therefore they are also inherentlygood.

3. Human beings create theirexperiences by the activity of theirthinking. Everything in the manifestrealm has its beginning in thought.

4. Prayer is creative thinking thatheightens the connection with God-Mind and therefore brings forthwisdom, healing, prosperity, andeverything good.

5. Knowing and understandingthe laws of life, also called Truth, arenot enough. A person must also livethe truth that he or she knows.
