To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

GATHERING FOR WORSHIP

PRELUDE Prelude in E-flat Major During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) your heart with this prayer of St. Clement. John Dautzenberg, Organ

O God, you are the unsearchable abyss of rest, the ineffable sea of love, and the fountain of all blessings. Water us now from the riches of your grace. And, from the sweet springs of your kindness, deliver us from all that is false, and make us children of quietness, and heirs of peace.

– St. Clement of Alexandria (c. 150-215), adapted

LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES Herald Robinson, Acolyte WELCOME Reverend Glaze

A man was possessed by an unclean spirit. Seeing Jesus, the Spirit cried out, “What do you want with us? Will you destroy us?” “Be quiet!” Jesus said, “And come out of that man!” The man shook. The

spirit shrieked. It came out. And, everyone was amazed. ...Mark I:2I-28

COMPASSION IS THE HALLMARK OF JESUS’ GOD. Consequently, Jesus’ healings and exorcisms are not simply patches on bodies destined for death. They are manifestations of God’s reign on earth, here and now—a revelation of God’s mercy, a promise of the restoration of all things.

In the early church baptism itself was an entry-exorcism, freeing the initiates from the delusional system and false naming that had previously held them in bondage. Jesus’ teaching is a kind of exorcism, as well—a cleansing of the mind of all the misinformation, the un-truth that enslaves people to the false powers of this world. And, faith is an exorcism of blindness, that is, humanity’s trained inability to perceive God’s presence and deeds even when they are happening before our very eyes. —Walter Wink, Engaging the Powers, adapted

PROCESSION, HYMN 23 Praise, My Soul, the God of Heaven

LAUDA ANIMA

LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE Psalm 111

Amelia Taylor, Cantor

Refrain. Praise to God who reigns above: Alleluia!

In the presence of all who worship you, O Beloved, we shout “Alleluia!” From the depths of our hearts, we give you praise. To all who would listen we tell of your

glory, the goodness and wonder of all you have done. Your faithfulness, compassion and grace are a delight to recall. For from your hands come justice and righteousness. All you say is true and your

promises are sure—written upon our hearts they are unshakeable forever. Those who know these things are wise. In reverence and in awe they bow before you, walking ever in your ways. Refrain.

MORNING PRAYER Amparo Palacios López

Glorious God, with all that we are, we praise you. For you alone wash away the dust of

death, and deliver us from the shame of our sin. You alone lift the chains of our guilt, and wipe away the tears of our sorrow. You alone call us by our true name: Beloved. Come

now, we pray, and anoint us with your Spirit, so that these blessings that are ours by your

grace would flow through us to all those who long to know a love as welcoming and good

as yours. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray. Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Amparo Palacios López

La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también.

The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you.

LISTENING FOR THE WORD OF GOD

HEBREW LESSON Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Reverend Palacios

15The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. 16This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: ‘If I hear the voice of the Lord my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die.’ 17Then the Lord replied to me: ‘They are right in what they have said. 18I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. 19Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable. 20But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak—that prophet shall die.’

EPISTLE LESSON 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Pastor Elijah 1Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that ‘all of us possess knowledge.’ Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; 3but anyone who loves God is known by him. 4Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that ‘no idol in the world really exists’, and that ‘there is no God but one.’ 5Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as in fact there are many gods and many lords— 6yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. 7It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8‘Food will not bring us close to God.’ We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. 9But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling-block to the weak. 10For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols? 11So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. 12But when you thus sin against members of your family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia Melchior Vulpius (c. 1560 – 1616) Amelia Taylor, Cantor

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! What is this? A new teaching, with authority. He commands even unclean spirits, and they obey. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! – Mark 1, adapted

GOSPEL LESSON Mark 1: 21-28 Reverend Glaze 21They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. 22They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, 24and he cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.’ 25But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ 26And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, ‘What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.’ 28At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. ¿Has venido para destruirnos?

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Reverend Glaze

Delivering God, send now your Holy Spirit, so that by her gentle moving among us we might learn to live, not arrogantly, with certainty and with pride, but in humility and grace, so that those about us might know the goodness and welcome that await them here, with you and with us. Amen.

INVITATION TO THE TABLE Pastor Erica PRAYER OF CONFESSION Reverend Palacios and Congregation

God, our Beloved, true home of every longing heart, we confess that because often

we are half-hearted in worship and neglectful in prayer, our hearts are malnourished, misshapen, possessed by fear and captive to what this world would make of us. We

wander, searching for anything to fill our emptiness, to quench our thirst, to calm our

anxious spirits. We look here and then there—when all we need is already present,

already given. In you alone is everything we need. Beloved, come and by your grace liberate us from the hold of all that which promises

much, but which delivers only emptiness and loss. And, with hearts set free and given

only to you, may we at last find rest and joy—and be the children of peace you have

created us to be.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE from Isaiah 55:1-2, 6-7 Reverend Palacios

Friends, hear the promise of God: “Are you thirsty? Come! Hungry and broke—not a penny to your name? It doesn’t matter—just come! It’s all on me: bread and wine and milk, whatever you need. Why have you been spending money on what leaves you hungrier than before? Come to me and eat what is good. Seek me and you’ll find me. Call and I’ll answer. Come, and I’ll give you life!” Yes, we’ll come and we’ll eat. We’ll come and we’ll live. Thanks be to God!

GIVING AND SERVING

OFFERING OUR PRAYERS Pastor Elijah After the Pastoral Prayer, we invite everyone to pray the Lord’s Prayer in your native language.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be

done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts

as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine

is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
