THE CSO’s MISSION IS TO INSPIRE, ENGAGE, AND ENRICH THE CHATTANOOGA COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSIC AND MUSIC EDUCATION.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Friends and Supporters, We have very good news and a manageable challenge.

The good news is that our donors have increased their total giving by 50% in the last four years as we have increased our expenses by only 12%. Most of the latter increases are directly due to our having to build up our development efforts after the reductions from ArtsBuild, which remains our largest donor.

A few years ago we were genuinely concerned about the sustainability of the CSO. We feared that Chattanooga would lose its orchestra.

Now we are in danger of having a balanced budget. I say it in that way because the challenge now is to continue the generous financial support year after year. The need will be eternal.

Please read this annual report to understand our progress and to be reassured about our future. Please continue the great support.

Sincerely,

Spencer McCallie

Dear Friends,

The 2014/15 season was one for the record books. The chance to have Yo-Yo Ma perform with our CSO musicians was the biggest highlight of the season. Mr. Ma’s artistry and passion brought excitement to the community and reminded us as musicians why we play music.

Our Barnett & Company Masterworks Season opened with a full house for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, performed by our CSO musicians and Chorus, along with the Lee University Chorale. It was a powerful start to the season. We also welcomed two composers to town. Jennifer Higdon joined us for her Pulitzer Prize winning Violin Concerto, performed by our concertmaster Holly Mulcahy. We performed two works by composer Ola Gjeilo; his piece Across the Vast, Eternal Sky on our season opener, and his choral Sunrise Mass on our final concert, in which he joined us. We also welcomed guest artists such as Andrew Sords and Javier Oviedo, plus the exciting return of pianist Qing Jiang performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20.

Our Luken Holdings Pops season, primarily conducted by Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt, featured the best of the Boston Pops, Hollywood, and Broadway. The holidays featured Banjo player Alison Brown and our Big Band Fever concerts drew big crowds ready to dance.

As for our fabulous musicians, we welcomed Josh Holritz as our new associate concertmaster. Josh is a product of our youth orchestras and was a CSOYO concerto competition winner in 1999.

I hope you enjoyed the season as much as I did, and I look forward to seeing you in the hall in 2015/16.

Sincerely,

Kayoko Dan

Dear Friends,

An annual report is a great opportunity to look backward and forward at the same time. The CSO had a remarkable year for its 82nd season, headed by the breath-taking performance of Yo-Yo Ma in October, 2014. The success of that concert both artistically and financially gave us the courage to bring in another superstar for the 2015/16 season — Renee Fleming. To have two such internationally-acclaimed musicians two years in a row is a real milestone for the CSO.

Music Director Kayoko Dan and Concertmaster Holly Mulcahy gave an outstanding performance of Jennifer’s Higdon’s Violin Concerto in March. It was a great treat to have Ms. Higdon in town for the performance week. Composer Ola Gjeilo also joined us when we performed his Sunrise Mass in April. The season was a reminder that contemporary music can and should take its rightful place among the old masters.

We had many wonderful collaborations with organizations across Chattanooga, including the Siskin Children’s Institute, the Creative Discovery Museum, Center for Creative Arts, and more. Thanks to generous donations from individuals, foundations, and area businesses, we were able to reach more than 25,000 students through one of our education programs this year. You can read more about it in this report.

Speaking of wonderful collaborations, for many years the CSO has shared the stage with Fletcher Bright and the Dismembered Tennesseans. This past April, we honored Fletcher with the creation of the Fletcher Bright Fund for Strings at the CSO. His family and friends donated $164,000 to establish the Fund, which will enable us to provide string education, instruments, and master classes to students for years to come.

Sales are up, donations are up, artistic quality is up. What a great path we’re on to a bright future for classical music in Chattanooga, thanks to our supporters like you.

Sincerely,

Molly K. Sasse

MUSIC EDUCATION

8

For more than 75 years, the CSO has been an important partner in music education in the greater Chattanooga area. This season, the staff and musicians sought to better understand changing community and educational needs and spent much of the season examining current programs and talking with stakeholders. As a result of this year long process, the CSO has better aligned its educational and engagement programs and added new programs for the 2015/16 season.

Young People’s ConcertsIt was All Aboard! the Chattanooga Choo-Choo as the CSO traveled coast to coast exploring the music of America. Students took a musical cross-country journey with the music of Copland, Dvorak, Sousa, Joplin, Rodgers & Hammerstein and more! A highlight of the concert was the CSO’s performance of music from the hit movie Frozen with a student sing-along.

Featured on the concert were local school teachers Michael Mitchell, Barger Academy; Kim Cargile, Lookout Mountain Elementary School; and Tracy Coates, Ooltewah Middle School, who conducted the CSO on Sousa’s Liberty Bell.

The 2014/15 Young People’s Concerts again had the highest recorded attendance; 7,055 students and teachers from 69 school and homeschool groups attended one of the performances.

Ensembles in SchoolsThe CSO Wind and String Quintets performed this season for approximately 23,000 students in 55 schools. Approximately 30% of students were minority and 8% were differently-abled students. These short programs introduce basic music concepts and the instruments of the orchestra.

Yo-Yo Ma Student ScholarshipsThe CSO received a generous grant from the UnFoundation to sponsor Yo-Yo Ma Student Ticket Scholarships. 50 students from regional universities and high schools were selected to receive a free ticket to the CSO’s concert with Yo-Yo Ma. More than 200 students applied for the scholarships and the recipients were randomly selected and represented diverse racial backgrounds and academic interests.

Open Rehearsals and MasterclassesAudience members and students had the unique opportunity to see the CSO dressed down and up close during three Tuesday night open rehearsals. Before the rehearsals, attendees had the opportunity to hear from CSO Concertmaster Mulcahy and Composers Jennifer Higdon and Ola Gjeilo about the individual preparation and rehearsal that goes into a larger concert.

9

Guest artists and guest composers gave 15 masterclasses and lectures during the season at Barger Academy, Chattanooga School for the Language Arts, Baylor School, Center for Creative Arts, Covenant College, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Lee University, the Chattanooga Girls Choir, and the Tivoli Theatre with nearly 500 students and adults attending.

String Ensemble ResidencyThis season, the CSO String Quintet was in a pilot residency program at the Center for the Creative Arts (CCA). The quintet worked with students in Advanced/Intermediate Strings classes on coaching, rehearsal critiques, performances, and more. This program helped increase the knowledge and proficiency of instrument and performance techniques, increase awareness of music as a professional career, and provided an opportunity for students to see and interact with musicians in their working environment.

The CSO Youth Orchestras program served 185 talented instrumental musicians in the Chattanooga area (representing 40 different schools), ages 8-18, this past season. The Youth Orchestras presented five formal concerts, as well as a concert with the Chattanooga Boys Choir (“Singing Christmas Tree”). The Fall Concert at Ringgold High School was not only the first time for the CSOYO to perform in the school’s new state-of-the-art auditorium, but also the first time to perform in the state of Georgia; Nacor Lantigua was student soloist on vibraphone. The Winter Concert at Brainerd Baptist Church on March 9 featured Josh Wallin and Monte Coulter, clarinetists, in a duet. The Spring Concert at the Tivoli Theatre on May 4 was a tour de force for Etude, Philharmonic, and Symphony, concluding with an impressive performance of the “Red Cape Tango” by Michael Daugherty.

A unique event this season was the joint Side-by-Side performance with the CSO Orchestra on February 22, featuring the two concerto competition winners (and brothers), Roger and Nacor Lantigua. Several CSOYO members also participated at the Ronald McDonald Autumn Festival on October 5 with a “petting zoo” activity, the PAL (Performing Arts League) Showcase on October 26, and PARK(ing) Day on September 19, performing for passersby in front of the Tivoli Center during the noon hour.

Bryony Stroud-Watson took over as the new CSOYO Chamber Ensemble Coordinator in March 2015, succeeding retiring Jenny Wilkes.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTOut & AboutThe String and Wind Quintets performed in 42 different community locations including City Hall, the Chattanooga Airport, Memorial Hospital, Warehouse Row, the Mountain Arts Community Center, local retirement homes, libraries, and other venues. These hour–long concerts appeal to a wide variety of people with classical and pops favorites.

Siskin Sensory Friendly ConcertsThe CSO partnered with Siskin Children’s Institute to present two sensory friendly quintet performances. Children and parents were encouraged to use scarves and bells, to move to the music, or to enjoy the concert in a familiar environment.

Play Along with the CSONearly 40 community musicians performed alongside CSO Musicians in this 3rd annual event at the Chattanooga Market on May 3, 2015. Attendees at the Market heard the combined orchestra in free performances of Grieg’s “Hall of the Mountain King”, Elgar’s “Nimrod” from Enigma Variations, Copland’s “Hoe-Down” from Rodeo, and Williams’ “Imperial March” from Star Wars. This event was created to allow an interactive peek into the workings of a professional orchestra.

PopTotsThe CSO continued its partnership with the Creative Discovery Museum in producing PopTots, a series that uses musical performance and instruction to help young children develop cognitive and fine motor skills. Principal musicians from the CSO Quintets performed and invited museum guests to make an instrument and perform with them.

CSO OnlineThe CSO is active on several social media sites and launched many different online contests for fans to participate in. For the CSO’s performance of Pirates of Penzance, a contest asking participants to sing the patter song “I am the very model of a modern major general” was launched with several fun entries. Two winners were chosen, one with a rendition complete with sets, costumes, and a cat and the other with a performance on accordion.

In March, the CSO launched its own version of March Madness redubbed Music Madness. Sixteen composers were paired and CSO fans read biographies and voted each day for their favorite. The first Golden Score Award was given to Richard Wagner! See the bracket, results, and biographies at http://chattanoogasymphony.org/music-madness/.

YO-YO MA GALA EVENT

12

Our Yo-Yo Ma Gala Event was a sell-out success! The CSO was fortunate to have world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma perform with us in October. The musicians experienced a whole new level of collaboration, and audience members were quick to provide a standing ovation at the completion of the concert. A post-concert reception afterwards welcomed more than 200 patrons who had a chance to meet Mr. Ma.

FLETCHER BRIGHT FUND

13

The CSO paid its appreciation to local musician and friend Fletcher Bright by hosting a sold-out dinner and concert at the CTC. The event culminated from a fundraising campaign which netted $164,000 towards the Fletcher Bright Fund for Strings, which will be used to provide more string instruction in schools, masterclasses with the CSO string quintet, instrument purchases, and more.
