All applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation process that is based on a business excellence model and tailored for business in India. Desk assessment includes meticulous analysis of documented evidence of sustainability initiatives submitted by applicants. Qualifying companies then go through an on-site assessment, over a period of six months, by a peer team of highly experienced CII-certified assessors who spend approximately 1000 hours per application. And finally, the last shortlist of winning applicants is validated by a pre-eminent jury comprising leaders from government, industry, civil society and academia.

• With the primary focus on current and future energy security for the country,

the company is fully geared to achieve its strategic goals of enhancing

recovery factor, increasing reserves and oil and gas equity

Ambuja Cement Ltd.

• India’s first cement company to achieve “ProSustain” certification from DNV

Business Assurance. The “ProSustain” certification implies that the company

promotes the adoption of responsible and cost effective measures for

incorporating sustainability into product design, development, production and

supply chain management

• Finds a place in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index 2014 issued by CDP

with a score of 92 out of 100. Scored highest among the participating cement

companies. A mark of climate change mitigation efforts and high quality of

disclosure of their carbon emissions

• Reduced 3.3% net specific CO emission in 2013 over 2012 and 28% from 1990 2

levels; 4.5% of energy generated at Ambuja is from renewable sources

• Through the Ambuja Cement Foundation (ACF), reaching out to about to 1.4

million people in over 855 villages in 22 locations of 12 Indian states. Spent over

4% of PAT on CSR activities in 2013

• Partnered with WBCSD for the development of India Water Tool (IWT) together

with WRI, CII Triveni Water Institute and 10 other Indian companies. The tool shall

help companies to understand and respond to their growing challenges of

managing water effectively and water risk with respect to ground water across

direct operations and supply chains within India

• An active member of Leader for Nature (LfN) Initiative of International Union for

Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and also a signatory to the Indian Business

potential that is more than twice its consumption. Around 16.6% of the total water

withdrawal was recycled and reused in 2013

• Largest consumers of fly ash in cement manufacturing, reduced clinker factor

from 75.15% in 2006 to about 67% in 2013

• 22.3% of total raw material consumed was recycled material in 2013; consumed

about 1.74 lakh tonnes of waste in 2013 as compared to 1.5 lakh tonnes in 2012

• Launched its first fully automatic 1 million tonne capacity terminal in Mangalore,

taking the total now to 5 bulk cement terminals/ports for transportation through

sea route, 10 specifically designed captive ships

• Working towards ‘Zero Harm’ – launched a new initiative ‘We Care’ – a holistic

approach to safety that encompasses all connected with Ambuja – across

different levels of management, within and outside locations including third party

contractors

identified 300 Anganwadi centres catering 238 villages in Rajasthan in

collaboration with Government of Rajasthan

• In Govt. upper primary middle and secondary schools in Rajasthan and

provides need based infrastructure and focussing on girl child education in

rural Rajasthan catering to 4000 enrolled students of 20 schools every year

• Impacting the lives of rural women in Rajasthan covering 48 villages,

benefitting 600 rural women through Sakhi SHG (Self Help Group)

- Regular capacity building, exposure programme

- Income generation training

- Ensuring forward and backward linkages

- Regular health check-up camps for rural women

• Imparting sustainable source of livelihood for 500 farmers family in 8

villages, benefiting 929 families through horticulture development,

improved agriculture, vegetable cultivation, cash crop cultivation and rain

water harvesting structures. Regular exposure and training to farmers and

empowering the village level farmers committee

• Availing access of drinking water by construction of overhead water tanks,

ground level reservoir tanks, open well, bore well and pipeline for water

supply in 9 villages benefitting 20,000 villagers in collaboration with Public

Health Engineering Department (PHED) and panchayats

• Through its project aligned to ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, providing access

of individual quality household toilet to 1000 families covering 4 Panchyats

in 3 blocks of Chittorgarh district in Public Private Partnership model

• Cement industries utilized around 12 Lakh MT of ISF slag. ISF slag is a

major process waste generated from Pyro metallurgical operations, which

was earlier stored and occupying around 40 hectare land

• Managing zero water discharge throughout the year through integrated

water management system which includes effluent treatment plant, reverse

osmosis plant and sewage treatment plant

particulate emission of 0.717 kg/tcs

• 13 new and differentiated products developed as per customer and market

• Carried out carbon and water footprint study in collaboration with IIT-Bombay

to understand the impact of operation on scarce resources.

A number of initiatives based on the recommendations of the report

Industrial Development Organization for implementation of a project for the

destruction of PCBs (Poly chlorinated Biphenyls), which are recognized as

support, quality medical services, health education, community welfare

schemes in model steel villages and other peripheral development activities

98,892 days of light available. 100 special tricycles were provided to differently-

works have also been initiated. To improve moisture regime in private land, farm bunds have

been constructed under watershed project. To ensure availability of drinking water, hand pumps

have been installed and drinking water pipe lines have been laid

• Working with farmers to improve the productivity of cultivable land by using agronomic practices.

Farmers are motivated to adopt quality seeds, bio-fertilizers, vermi-compost, farm yard manures
