Gwénolé Gahinet and PaulMeilhat crossed the finishline first, on Monday April 28to win the 12th edition of LaTransat AG2R LA MON-DIALE, a transatlantic regattathat takes place every twoyears on identical FigaroBénéteau II single-hull sail-boats. The last to finish wereMathieu Forbin and ArthurPrat (Guadeloupe GrandLarge 1) on Thursday, May 1,with the awards ceremonythe next day on the dock.

They were hungry for victory andsailed in to claim it right atlunchtime! Sailing on Safran–Guy Cotten, Gwenolé Gahinetand Paul Meilhat were the first tocross the finish line in SaintBarth to win the 12th edition dela Transat AG2R LA MONDI-ALE at 1:17pm on Monday,April 28. Precisely after 22 days,6 hours, 17 minutes, and 59 sec-onds of racing!

These two skippers are nowamong the champions of this leg-endary transatlantic race that setssail from Concarneau, in Brittany,France, every two years aboardidentical single-hull FigaroBénéteau II boats, with the finishline in Saint Barth, via an obliga-tory buoy in La Palma, CanaryIslands. “It’s a dream come true!

We believed we could do itbefore setting sail, but from thereto actually win, considering thehigh level of talent in the fleetthis year, it’s quite extraordi-nary,” admits Gahinet, who wasinterviewed on the dock after cel-ebrating with the traditional sprayof champagne.

Exactly 1 hour, 6 minutes, and 53seconds later, Fabien Delahayeand Yoann Richomme, aboardSkipper Macif, sailed across theline for second place. Behindthem, a superb duel for thirdplace between AlexiaBarrier/Laurent Pellecuer (30Corsaires) and Roland Jour-dain/Martin Le Pape (LaCornouaille), as the duosapproached the Port of Gustaviain a display of match racing, skill-fully tacking around the boatsanchored in the harbor. Barrierand Pellecuer maintained an 87-second lead over their adversariesto complete the podium.

Ten other boats were yet to come, with two having abandoned earlyin the race due to technical prob-lems. By Wednesday morning, thearrival of the first sailors to havetaken the northern route to crossthe ocean—an unlucky decisionas they suffered from a seriouslack of wind. These includedsome big names in French oceanracing, such as MichelDesjoyeaux, who won this race in1992, and sailed this year withCorentin Horeau (Bretagne-CréditMutuel Performance). Not tomention Jean Le Cam, also a for-mer winner of the AG2R LAMONDIALE, sailing in a duowith Gildas Mahé (Interface Con-cept).

The 2014 edition of the eventcame to a close with the arrivalof the last boat—Mathieu Forbin

and Arthur Prat (GuadeloupeGrand Large 1)—on Thursday,May 1, in the evening. They hadbeen at sea for 25 days, 13 hours,14 minutes, and 29 seconds to

cover the 3,890 nautical miles toSaint Barthélémy. The awardsceremony was held on the maindock in Gustavia, on Fridayevening May 2.

F ollowing on theheels of the SaintBarth Bucket and

Les Voiles, and arrivingliterally days after theTransat ag2r, the sixthannual West IndiesRegatta adds a touch ofold time sailing mixedwith a Caribbean marketand even a few down-islanders cooking up Italcabbage soup right onthe dock. The event mayhave lost a bit of itsunique identity this yearas it shared the dockwith the race village forthe Transat, but on theother hand that mightalso mean more peoplewere milling about overthe weekend. The event

is organized by AlexisAndrews in cooperationwith the Tourism Com-mittee of Saint Barth, thelocal UNESCO club, and the Port of Gustaviaand took place the firstweekend in May, withracing on Saturday andSunday, May 3 & 4.

“It may have been thebest sailing we everhad,” says Lee David-son, an American resi-dent of Saint Barth whosails in this event everyyear. “Every race hadgroups of two or threeboats sailing together, which made it moreexciting. On the raceback from Colombier on

Sunday, there were fiveboats within 10 boatlengths of each other, which made it a lot offun. I went out on Sum-mer Cloud, which has nomotor, and is great tomaneuver… the crewsincluded captains of bigschooners to St Barthsailing school students,it’s nice that a lot of kidswent out during theraces.”

The fleet this year com-prised a nice mix of tra-ditional boats, includingthe 1951 Clyde Tug"Flying Buzzard,” whichserved as the committeeboat and had recentlybeen the Antigua ClassicYacht Regatta Commit-tee Vessel. The Carria-cou sloops were Zemi, a42 foot Alwyn Enoedesign; Exodus, the lat-est Alwyn Enoe cre-ation, which lives inAntigua and returned toSt.Barth for the secondyear; Tradition, thelargest sloop in the race;Sweetheart; Savvy fromGrenada;Genesis, winner of theAntigua classic 2014;

Ocean Nomad; andSummer Cloud, lastyear’s winner. Zemi wasdeclared this year’s win-ner, with Skullduggeryrum to celebrate.

Two schooners were onhand as well: AlexanderHamilton, built in Nevisand arriving fromDominica fully ladenwith fresh organic pro-duce and skippered byAndrew Robinson; andScaramouche, theQueen of The WestIndies Regatta Fleet, which sailed up from St.Vincent.

The best thing is theauthentic spirit that per-vades the West IndiesRegatta (westindiesregatta.com),a gathering of the tradi-tional boats that onceplied the waters of theCaribbean carryinggoods from island toisland. The regatta alsopromotes the dying artof West Indian boatbuilding, something wellworth saving.

T hanks to every-one for joining usand contributing

to the success of thisyear's festival, especial-ly everyone in SaintBarth who providedhospitality for ourguests. This was anotherexciting year—our 19th!We had a wonderfulprogram and an excep-tional list of invitedguests—directors, pro-ducers, distributors, andan actress—showingworks from Colombia,Guadeloupe, Trinidad &Tobago, Martinique, andCuba, with guests fromParis, New York, Barba-dos, Guadeloupe,Colombia, and as far asGermany. We coveredan extraordinary rangeof themes including thecomplex choices facingpeople fleeing repres-sion (Una Noche) andeconomic collapse(Melaza). We took along hard look at whatreally happened to theNew Jewel Movement

in Grenada, followedtwo extraordinary stick-men as they rediscover atraditional martial art, took a close look at thelife of a hardworkinglighthouse keeper as hetries to balance workand his responsibilitiesto others, and of coursewe closed the week onthe sands of Flamandsbeach with an exuberanttake on the life andmusic of the extraordi-nary Kelvis Ochoa!

During the afternoons,we showed a number ofexcellent documentariesincluding two by GillesElie-Dit-Cosaque cover-ing the recent strikesprotesting the high costof living in the FrenchCaribbean, and thesocial unrest inspired byPele’s visit to Mar-tinique in 1971. Thisfilmmaker also visited aclass at the elementaryschool in Gustavia toshare his art and craftwith the students. We

also showed a livelycomic vision of a mantrying to save his homein Guadeloupe, a por-trait of Trinidad’s lead-ing architect ColinLaird, as well as aremarkable examinationof some of the remain-ing craftsmen of Guade-loupe through memoriesfound in a diary.

Once again, specialthanks to StephanieJames for introducingthe films and runningthe discussions with theaudience—sometimes inthree languages, and ofcourse we thank ourpartner and great friend

Jean-Marc Césaire ofCiné Woulé, withoutwhose help we wouldnot be able to projectlarge screen video onthe beach or at the WallHouse Museum. Theshow went on! Andfinally, many thanks toour friends at AJOE fortheir ongoing supportand for the use of theiramazing new digitalprojection system. Notennis court ever had itso good! On to next yearfor the 20th! ---- JoshuaHarrison, co-founder,artistic director, St BarthFilm Festival

N adège Emmanuelian hascompleted the programfor the 13th annual St

Barth Theatre Festival, whichtakes place May 16-25. Thisyear’s program comprises a vari-ety of theatrical productions (inFrench). In his one-man cabaret-style show, Ali Bougheraba pres-ents “Ali In Wonderland,” full ofhumor, poetry, and memories ofPanier, his childhood neighbor-hood in Marseille. Another actorwho promises laughter is AntoineDuléry, a French movie actorseen in the latest film by ClaudeLelouch, “Salaud on t’aime.”His show, “Antoine Dulery faitson cinéma, mais au théâtre,”plays tribute to the cinema as theactor exhibits his brilliant senseof impersonation as he evokesone iconic French movie starafter the other.

If theatre is made of gestures aswell as words, then Yves Marc

and his “Theatre of Move-ment” is an expert in the art.He will appear at the festi-val with his production, “CeCorps qui parle,” in whichhe transforms small dailygestures, oh so eloquently. This type of movement isonly one step away fromdance, which on the The-atre Festival’s roster thisyear, with Raoul Fernan-dez, an actor who workswith Stanislas Nordey or

Jorge Lavelli, but is also a direc-tor and choreographer. Fernandezwill present an original piecetitled “Tango Gardel,” in homageto composer Carlos Gardel, andperformed by Julien Touati. Saint

Barth also has the honor of wel-coming Michelle Kokosowski tothe festival. NadègeEmmanuelian gave free reign tothis university theatre professorand theorist who founded anddirected the World Theatre Festi-val in Nancy, France, where sheintroduced such important theatreartists as Jerzy Grotowski andTadeusz Kantor. From May 17through the end of the month,Michelle Kokosowski will pres-ent projections from her archivesand lead discussions at theEspace Météo above Gustavia.
