Monday Keynote Session 8:15-9:30 amTelling the Story: Lessons Learned from the Outside WorldKathy Schrock (@kathyschrock)Ballroom Invite your friends to join us live online! sdpb.org/TIE

Research states that facts and figures only activate the part of the brain where we make sense of words. But, when listening to a digital story, a recent article reports “not only are the language processing parts in our brain activated, but any other area in our brain that we would use when experiencing the events of the story are, too”. To get their point across, the business world is shifting from bullet points to stories. How can we do this in schools? Presenting content using storytelling can be captivating, compelling, and can help students grasp the content. This presentation will include the research to support this pedagogical shift, various examples of content presented this way, and an overview of the process and tools that can be used to create these rich digital stories.

Kathy Schrock has been a school district Director of Technology, an instructional technology specialist, a middle school, academic, museum, and public library librarian, and is currently an online adjunct graduate-level professor at two universities and an independent educational technologist. Kathy has been involved with technology to support teaching and learning since the early 1990’s, and is an Adobe Education Leader, a Google Certified Teacher, a Sony Education Ambassador, and a Discovery Education STAR and a DEN Guru. In 1995, she created her award-winning site, Kathy Schrock’s Guide for Educators, to help teachers easily wade through the many resources on the Web. In 1999, Kathy partnered with Discovery Education and she maintained the site until late 2012 when the site was retired. You can find out more about Kathy at KathySchrock.net.

Sunday Keynote Session 6:45-8:00 pmBlended Learning: One Teacher’s Journey Weaving Together Technology & TraditionCatlin Tucker (@CTuckerEnglish)Ballroom Invite your friends to join us live online! sdpb.org/TIE

Many teachers are feeling increasing pressure to teach 21st Century students without easy access to 21st Century tools. The idea of blending online work with face-to-face engagement is daunting. Join author and teacher Catlin Tucker as she shares her journey from traditional low tech classroom to a blended learning model by capitalizing her students’ connectivity and the technology they bring into her classroom.

She encourages teachers to build their own technology tool belts to create a blended learning model that works for them. She believes weaving together technology and tradition can make educators more effective while improving learning outcomes for students. Explore how

technology can be used to empower both teachers and students in an increasingly digital world.

Catlin Tucker is a Google Certified Teacher and CUE Lead Learner. She teaches 9th and 10th grade English language arts at Windsor High School in Sonoma County, where she was named Teacher of the Year in 2010. She has also taught online college level writing courses, which led to her interest in blended learning. Corwin published her first book, Blended Learning for Grades 4-12: Leveraging the Power of Technology to Create Student-Centered Classrooms in June 2012. She is currently working on her second book, Using Web 2.0 Technology to Teach the Common Core Literacy Standards and writing a blended learning course.

Catlin’s keynote is brought to you in part by the Sioux Falls School District. Thank you for your contribution!
