A Word From Our Pastor...

At the Glade Church we believe connecting with other believers in small groups is essential to our growth as Christians. We currently have over 100 groups meeting every week either on campus or in homes, restaurants, and places of business, etc.

• These groups help us to connect with other believers.

• They help us to grow in our faith and help us to develop the special gifts and abilities God has given us.

• In these groups, strangers become friends, and friends enjoy life together.

If you’re not in a connect group you’ll !nd it hard to get to know anyone at the Glade Church. The truth is, you really can’t fellowship with hundreds of people at a time, but you can develop strong connections in a group made up of !fteen to twenty.

“...a new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another…" John 13:34

FROM PASTOR BRUCE GRUBBS… | Growing Together

Page 3: 2014 Spring Connect Book: A Catalog of Glade Church Small Groups

In Genesis 1–2, we read the Creation account and how God planned for us to “do life.” In the midst of His creative endeavors a recurring phrase appears. In fact, six times after God creates something the text says, “and God saw that it was good.” From light to livestock, the assessment of His efforts is the same: It is good. He is pleased. Things are as He intended them to be. Then on the sixth day, humankind comes on the scene. The result of God’s creativity has been shown. God is so pleased by this latest creation, that as He assesses all His efforts over the previous six days, His appraisal changes. With His latest addition, the things He had created are no longer just good. They are now very good.

Then the unexpected happens. After explaining in more detail His design and intentions for man, God says, “It’s not all good.” Up to this point, everything was as it was intended. But in Genesis 2:18, God says something isn’t right. He says, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” At its core, this is a statement about the importance of our connecting well with others.

What is striking is that the Fall has not yet occurred. There is no sin, no disobedience, nothing to mar the relationship between God and man. Adam is in a state of perfect intimacy with God. Yet the word God uses to describe him is “alone.” And God says this aloneness is “not good.”

Sometimes in the church we tell people that there is inside every human being a God-shaped void that no other person can !ll. That is true. But apparently, according to the writer of Genesis, God creates inside this man a kind of “human-shaped-void” that God Himself will not !ll. No substitute will !ll this need in you for human relationship.

Our connect ministry is is here to help you !ll both the human and God-shaped voids in your life so that you can connect relationally to grow spiritually.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? | GroupLinkStart by scanning this book. Find a Sunday Connect Group that you can become part of in an on-going way. Then consider the other shorter-term options based on your interest, need, or desire. Enroll/register for whatever groups you wish.

On-Going groups generally meet on Sundays at church. They serve as our “home-base” for Bible study, fellowship and sharing weekly.

Short-Term groups gather for a few weeks or a few months for topical studies, activities or to tackle a task that needs doing. You can sign up, participate through a course of study or activity and move on to other groups as you may wish.

Types of Groups...

WHAT KIND OF GROUPS DO WE HAVE? There are two types of groups: “On-Going” and “Short-Term”:

COMMUNITY GROUPS | On-Going

The Glade Church has always been a place de!ned by community. Early in the life of the church “community” was used to describe our location. We were known as a small, family church at a rural crossroads in a place called Gladeville. As the church grew we were no longer known by our location but by the embrace offered to those who entered our doors. We had become a “community” of believers knit together by a common faith and set of values.

Today we are a regional church where people from many areas come together in the spirit of “community” to worship, connect & grow, and serve in the name of Christ. Our community groups “go” to take the heart of our church into the broader community we serve. Theses groups carry the best of our heritage as a “community” of believers willing to embrace others into the places we call home.

True Women 101: Divine DesignLeader: Patti WebbContact: [email protected] Attends: Adult Women's GroupWhen: 6:15 pm – 7:30 pm

What does it mean to be a woman? The current cultural ideal for womanhood is that women should be powerful and in control. But sadly, this model of

womanhood hasn't delivered the happiness and ful!llment it promised. The Bible teaches that it's not up to us to decide what womanhood is all about. God created male and female for a very speci!c purpose that

was very intentional. He wants women to discover, embrace, and delight in the beauty of His design. He's looking for True Women! Bible teachers Mary A. Kassian and Nancy Leigh DeMoss will encourage women to discover and embrace God's design and mission for their lives.

The Heart of True Faith: Loving God & OthersLeader: Angie Cox Contact: [email protected] Attends: Mixed gender Adult GroupWhen: 6:15 pm – 7:30 pm

What Does God Really Want from You? It's easy to get confused about how to please God. One Bible teacher details a long list of the commands you should be keeping. The next teacher says only grace matters. Who is right? Centuries ago, in answer to this question, Jesus simpli"ed all the rules and regulations of the Law into just two great commands: love God and love people. Loving God and Others looks at how these two commands de"ne the heart of Christian faith. As you rest in the certain knowledge of what God calls you to, you will be challenged to live these commands out and discover how obeying Jesus' simple commands will transform not only your life but also the lives of those around you.

Focused on ChristLeader: Henry WebbContact: [email protected] Attends: Mixed Gender Adult GroupWhen: 6:15 pm – 7:30 pm; Jan. 22 to Mar. 12

In his letter to the Colossians, Paul presented an exceptional description of our Lord Jesus Christ. We face some of the same challenges and deceptions as the disciples in Colossae. Paul’s approach was to get believers (then and now) to focus their minds and hearts on Jesus. Our goal in this study will be to focus our attention on Jesus, who He is and what He has done. Then we can choose to make Him Lord and King in our lives and to allow Him to transform our thoughts, attitudes, priorities, behaviors, and relationships as Jesus lives in and through us. This study, led by Henry Webb, will meet on Wednesdays, January 22 - March 12. Some of the topics are: Fall in Love with Jesus; What Do You Want for Your Family?; What's Worth Your Time and Energy?; and Don't Be Deceived.

When Life is HardLeaders: Rob & Tammy HillWho Attends: Mixed Gender Adult GroupContact #: 615.449.5798Email: [email protected]: 6:15 pm - 7:30 pm

When life is hard, really hard, we often spend all our time pleading, begging, yelling, refusing, and questioning. While none of these things are necessarily unusual, they are missing the ultimate point. When life is hard, when things get ugly, when all hope seems to be lost... that is when we are able to display the superiority of the life lived in God. It is in those moments of despair, when we question what is happening, when we don't know what to do, when some trials never seem to end, that we can lean most heavily on God's promises and truths.

The Great Adventure explores a man and his world beyond the everyday. The 20-session study puts the roof on the house of masculinity and creates a vision for a man's future and destiny. This study will help men rediscover the adventure in life through a greater understanding of who they are. Men will uncover the uniqueness they have as a man and discover a satisfying life focus. It will challenge men to consider several important questions they are continually asking themselves: "Who am I?", "What are my dreams in life?", "Do I have courage to pursue those dreams?"

Discussion based groups

Discussion based groups are a conversational small group environment where people can explore faith and experience community as they Connect & Grow together.

Discussion groups are for:

◦ Persons who are exploring faith and who are curious about God, Jesus, the Bible, or Christianity

◦ Persons new to faith who have just begun a relationship with Jesus Christ

◦ Persons returning to faith who have some church experience, but have been away for a while

◦ Persons with busy lifestyles who need a group experience that doesn't include time commitments outside of the scheduled meeting.

The focus of discussion based groups is to lead group members into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ by creating an open and accepting environment where they can explore faith and experience community. These groups are ideal for those with questions about faith and those who want to learn more about the Bible and Christianity. These groups can be comfortably joined at any point in the term.

ChoirLeader: Phillip HardyWho Attends: Mixed Gender Adult GroupContact #: 615.444.9550Email: [email protected]: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Our choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 - 8:00 pm in the Worship Center.  Rehearsals typically consist of running through each song that we're leading that upcoming Sunday, as well as learning new worship songs to introduce to the church.

Participation in the Worship Choir does not require any auditions or even the ability to read music.  If you've got a heart to worship Jesus, we need you!  Rehearsals are very informal and you're welcome to drop by any Wednesday night.

What does it mean to be a “member” of the Glade Church?

We at the Glade Church will never pursue you to become a member. In fact, you are welcome to worship, connect in a group, and serve in a ministry here (i.e. Choir, First Impressions Ministry, Automotive Ministry, etc.) without being a member. But when you become a member, you will be eligible to vote on church matters, to serve in leadership, and be eligible to lead a group or ministry. Membership implies certain commitments and responsibilities as well. These include but are not limited to the following:

• Participating regularly in corporate worship• Connecting with and participating in a small group• Serving God through this church family

If you wish to become a “member” of the Glade Church, you can join in one the following ways:

• By receiving believer’s baptism (i.e. immersion) by which you are saying that you have received Christ.• By “statement” that you have already received Christ

and have received believer’s baptism.• By simple transfer of your membership from another Baptist fellowship.

• Note: If you are a believer and you are coming from a church that does not practice baptism by immersion, you may join our church by simply being baptized here.

To learn more about the privileges and responsibilities of being a member of The Glade Church family you may visit the Next Step Center on any Sunday, attend a Next Step Orientation or visit our website (gladevillechurch.org) and click on “Next Step” under the “New Here?” tab.
