We have added twelve memberships inthe past month. For the first time, wenow have over 200 Memberships –and the past month’s activities have dem-onstrated why you join and why you stay.

You will see write-ups on other pages ofthis issue, but let me recap to show justwhat an active membership we have.

• As I write this, it was barely threeweeks ago that we held our 18th AnnualShow of Dreams.

o We had 153 cars “on the field” (withonly two trailered in - and those wereMember Alex Saidel’s Jomar (TVR)Race Cars.)

§ We are a “Drivers Club” – andthis, along with our other activities, proves it.

o Through your efforts, we will beable to present NH High Hopes ANDthe NH Food Bank each with a checkfor $5,000 this year.

• The day after the Show of Dreamsseveral of our members went down tothe Day of Triumph at the Larz Ander-son Museum.

• And just to show that we are not onlya Driver’s Club - Dave LeBlanc tookhis beautiful red and black Austin-Healey 100-6 down to the prestigiousMisselwood Concours d’Elegance onthe grounds of Endicott College in Essex,

Mass. This show has the potential ofbecoming the “Amelia Island North” ofcar shows.

• And we have members who race too.2 weeks ago Members Rod Folia (Ro-tary Engined Mazda) and Dick Little/Petrina Murray (Lotus 7) and EarleTucker (MGA ) went to the NH Mo-tor Speedway (Loudon) for the VintageCar Race Weekend there.

o As a Club, we have not “paid muchattention” to racing – and I think thathas been our mistake. When thereare people out there who you actuallyknow, it makes it a lot more fun towatch.

• Back to Driving; Saturday Aug 9 foundtwelve LBCs and three BBCs (that’sBIG British Cars - Joe & DiannePaquette with both of their Jag XJ6splus my Jag Mark IX ) wending theback roads through Bedford and Milfordas we visited Barbour (British) Cloth-ing; Haywood’s Ice Cream and LaBelleWinery.

• On Tuesday the 12th we were backon the road again “cruising in” to theBritish Beer Company in Manchester.

Once again I am pleased to report that“The Club” didn’t plan any of theseevents. Things happen because membersmake them happen. And there is cer-tainly A LOT happening at BCNH.

Also note that no one Member goes toALL of these events. The reason we planso many events is so you can chose toattend those that interest you – and, atthe same time, not feel obligated to go toones that don’t interest you.

And members don’t have to do ALL thework. For many events we just tag alongon something that has been organized byanother club or car enthusiast group.

I encourage you to check out the EventsCalendar on the www.BCNH.orgwebsite, and on page 2 of the newsletter,to see all of the other “opportunities” thatthere are to get together with fellowBCNHers – and members of other carclubs – to enjoy your car(s) and their fel-lowship.

As we have said so many times before, the reason this club has so many inter-esting things to do is because its mem-bers do so many interesting things. Please help us to keep that interest levelhigh.

The Members who have the most funare the ones that are there to get inon it.

So Saith Prime Minister Bob

The August meeting at the Weathervanewas called to order at 7:00 PM sharp byBob Mitchell our fearless leader. Believeit or not the previous meetings minutewere accepted as published in the news-letter. The same was true of theTreasurer’s report.

Treasurer John Giese gave us an SODreview of revenue and expenses on theshow. Our biggest revenue came from ourshow Sponsors – a total of $5800!! Thankyou Di Stanley for all your hard workhounding those sponsors. And, thank yousponsors for being so generous this year.If you care about all of the details pleasesee the treasurer’s report. Total profitfrom the show is $9500. Coupled with themoney we saved as seed money from lastyear’s show the members decided to do-nate $5000 to the High Hopes Founda-tion and $5000 to the NH Food Bank. Themotion was acknowledged, seconded andvoted on! Both the High Hopes Founda-tion and the NH Food Bank representa-tives will be in attendance at the Septem-ber meeting at the Weathervane on Sept8th (we always skip the Labor Day holi-day and do the meeting a week later).

Other good news as we got started wasthat Prime Minister Bob’s Dad is turning104 and will be receiving the Boston PostCane from the Town of Rye. Yay Bob’sdad!!

We had a couple of new members attendthe meeting and as usual we did our bestto embarrass them and admit they have acar problem. My name is ____ and I owna ____.

First up was Neil Goddard who has an’07 Aston Martin Vantage and hails fromNashua. Hank Giles is not a new mem-ber but has not been to a meeting in awhileso we decided he needed to be abused aswell. He has a 1975 Spitfire. As of Au-gust 6th we have 204 memberships! Anall time record. Most memberships arefor two people.

Several, OK only two, members attendedthe British Beer Company cruise in lastmonth. We need a better showing thismonth!

Sue and Bill MacDuff reported on theBritish Motorfest they participated in upin Halifax Nova Scotia. Also the drive toSt Gaudens. They also participated in theBedford Poker Rally. It really sounds likethey are having all the fun this year!

Events coming up next month are variedwith a breakfast drive, dinner drive, thecruise-in at the BBC etc. Come out withyour car (if it’s running. If not bring thatboring daily driver) and have some fun.

If you are planning to attend Stowe youneed to make your reservations asap.Same with the Speckled Hen run – thereare four cars attending currently. It’s notjust for MGs.

We had a total of $112 from the 50-50.Linda Dos Santos won $56.

Road Trip to Saint-Gaudens

July 20, 2014

by Ginger Christiansenphotos by Bill MacDuff

Early Sunday morning ten BCNH carsconverged on Dunkin Donuts in Bedfordto begin our trek over the back roads tothe western part of our state. The weatherwas overcast but comfortable enough for

a tops-down drive. As we left civilizationwe saw trees, trees, and more trees. Wehadn’t been driving long before we passedthe “Straighten Up and Fly Right Homefor Wayward Ladies” in Goffstown. On-ward we went on a road with no servicesto be seen – a heck of a place if one ranout of petrol or had a flat and no spare.

There wasn’t a whole lot to see on thedrive itself. We had a much-needed pitstop in Newport and once we were backon the road you could see fog-toppedmountains.

There was a photo-op at the Cornish/Windsor Covered Bridge, the longestwooden covered bridge in the US and thelongest 2-span covered bridge in theworld. It sports wonderful signage abovethe entrance. Shortly after that we arrivedat Saint-Gaudens just in time for the

clouds to drift away. Wetoured the house, questionedthe docent, then wanderedoutside to explore the garden, studios and grounds. Wespoke to resident artist JonRiedeman in the Ravine stu-dio. He showed us his cur-rent work and explained theprocess of loss wax and cast-ing. He was very interesting. Some of the sculptures wesaw were: Abraham Lincolnthe Man, David Farragut

Memorial, Adams Memorial, the Puritan, and the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial. There were coins, cameos and bas-re-lief, all to take your breath away in theirmagnificence. This was an awe-inspiringvisit.

Next, we headed over that longest cov-ered bridge and up the road a piece toArtisan Park in Windsor, Vermont. Therewe ate lunch and sampled vodkas andgins at the Silo Distillery. Some of usheaded over to Simon Pierce glass andpottery works, Vermont FarmsteadCheese or back into town to the Ameri-can Precision Museum. This trip was afeast for the eyes and stomach and worthdoing again.

Saturday Morning drive for Ice Cream and Wine

by Ginger Christiansenphotos by Bill MacDuff

Seven cars gathered in Bedford, NH tostart out on a leisurely drive on back roadsthrough the countryside. Our first villageto pass through was Bedford Village paststately homes set back from the road. Wedrove along until we reached AmherstVillage and drove on the Boston PostRoad. It was originally named the SecondNew Hampshire Turnpike and waschartered in 1799 and completed in 1801.This road was a connecting road betweenBoston and Windsor, Vermont. I couldn’tfind the date when the turnpike wasrenamed the Boston Post Road. I did findmaps and plenty of history.

Well, after driving around some detourswe were now on our way towardsMilford and over to the Barbour Outlet.Barbour holds three Royal Warrants thatare marks of recognition to individuals orcompanies who have supplied goods orservices to the royal family for at leastfive years. The queen wears Barbour,Princess Diana wore Barbour, others inthe family wear Barbour and so does theDuchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton.

After doing a little shopping and stretch-ing our legs, we high-tailed it over to Hay-ward Ice Cream in Milford. There welunched on ice cream and/or hot dogs. After all was said and done we did re-traced our route and headed back toAmherst and ended our drive at LaBelleWinery. Amy LaBelle became enamoredwith the process of wine making yearsago and so began her journey into mak-ing her own delectable wines and thendreaming of something bigger. Along withher husband, Cellar Master CesarArboleda, they built Labelle Winery in2012 and now we are lucky to have thisaward-winning vintner in Amherst, NH.

I have found for the most part, that thereare three types of days to wake up to:

1. There are the days that you just wantto go back to bed, put the pillow over yourhead and sleep the day away.

2. There are days that others want you togo back to bed, and they will help put thepillow over your head.

3. And my favorite are the days you wakeup and can feel the excitement in the air,and you know that it is going to be a “Spe-cial” day

That is what happened to me on Satur-day, July 26th. I jumped out of bed know-ing that the day had finally arrived for the“Show of Dreams” and that we were try-ing out a new place.

I couldn’t contain my excitement as Ipicked up my Mother-In-Law, GerryCleary. As we headed toward Hudson,NH. The little kid in me wanted to know:“Are we there yet?” I couldn’t wait tosee everybody again, to see all the carsand all the vendors. I just couldn’t wait.

I have always been a car nut. I learnedat a young age how to work on my owncars. I would change the tires, spark plugsand wires, points, distributor caps andbrakes. As well as change the oil. I al-ways admired the fine lines of the classiccars. How magnificent they look. Howthey gleam when they are shined up. Howthe owners will light up as they tell thehistory of their cars.

Speaking of stories. I know that JohnGiese is always looking for stories to fea-ture in our monthly newsletter. We all loveit when people send in stories about theirpride and joys. How they got them, theplaces that they take them, or the workthat they put into them to make them shinefor days like today.

Now where was I? Oh yes, travelingdown Route 102 to the Show of Dreams.

Finally the traffic had started to slowdown. There was a very nice Hudsonpolice officer directing traffic along withour very own Beefeater, who also lovesto direct traffic and flash his famousWade dos Santos smile to everyone asthey approach the parking lot.

But what caught my eye the most wasthe rows and rows of these amazing Clas-sic British Cars. I heard a rumor that ap-proximately 152 cars were at the showthis year. Just image looking over rowsand rows of these ageless classics, thecolors, the various years and makes. Youcould see their magnificent beauty fromthe street!

As we walked up the path, there was anice mini with a sign that said, “Admit-tance free, donations welcome. Just dropthe money in the Mini.” Continuing alongthe path was the registration booth and

Page 10: 2014 Show of Dreams - Best in Show Pinch & Suzi …personalpages.tds.net/~johgie/bcnh/BCNH newsletter 09 -14...tor Speedway (Loudon) for the Vintage Car Race Weekend there. o As a

10

the Regalia booth. I stopped at the Rega-lia Booth, bought Wade his yearly t-shirtand my portable fan. Moving on along, you can’t help stop at the raffle table andbuy tickets for the raffle and the 50/50drawing.

I continued along asking Vendors andpeople there how they felt about havingthe show in the new location. What I likedabout it, as I turned the corner after visit-ing with DJ Jim George, was that so manyof our old vendors where there as well asnew ones. I love seeing Bob Hartson withhis antique bicycles, The Good NewsGarage with their current car for auction,Aquarius Girl Jewelry, and The NorthernPossession Art Glass Studio. It warmedmy heart to visit the High Hopes tent withthe NH Food Bank tent right next to them. They loved their new shady spots andplenty of people had been stopping by tovisit each of their booths.

One of the new features was the Rymes“Pink” oil truck. It definitely broughtpeople over to see the vendor aisle. Thevendor aisle was such a nice touch. Itmade the vendors feel closer in touch witheverybody without feeling out in left field.

I stopped by the “swap” and visited withWil to see if I could find any treasures forthe MGA to take home. What a wonder-ful place to visit. By then the smells ofthe 5 Star Barbecue & Catering was call-ing my name. What a wonderful lunch! Ifollowed it down with lemonade and frieddough from the next stand.

I loved seeing the British Beer Companywith their Samuel Adams giveaways. Igot a free cap to wear around. I finishedwatching the Beefeater trying out theapparatus that the police had brought forthe day. You could ride on it and see howit felt for a sudden impact of five miles anhour. And it struck my funny bone to havethe Beefeater riding it right in front of theBritish Beer company.

Now for my favorite part, I walked therows and rows of all the British cars thatwere there. I love reading the licenseplates, talking with the car owners, andtalking with the spectators. The responsefrom all that I talked to was that they loved

Page 11: 2014 Show of Dreams - Best in Show Pinch & Suzi …personalpages.tds.net/~johgie/bcnh/BCNH newsletter 09 -14...tor Speedway (Loudon) for the Vintage Car Race Weekend there. o As a

11

the location and visibility of this year’sshow. I talked with a lot of people fromMassachusetts and Connecticut that saidthat they would love to come back nextyear if it was in the same place. Theyloved the cooling stations and would haveloved to have the lemonade a little closer.I met a couple of people who come justto read the license plates.

The day is never complete without join-ing in the fun of the raffles and the 50/50.Everybody crowds around the DJ hopingthat their number will be called.

But the biggest crowd masses when theyannounce the awards for the different cat-egories. I watched with admiration as theowners step up to accept their awardswith pride. They even had prizes for the“Blind driver course”. I believe that ev-ery time the Christenson family puts it upit gets more and more elaborate. Greatjob!

Once again, a great applause needs to goto the SOD Committee for their continu-ous hard work, the sponsors, the vendors, the volunteers, and the cars that werebrought in for the show. This day couldnever happen without you.

And a special thanks goes out from allthe ladies to Historical Motor Sports. Whata way to make us feel like “Queens” forthe day in our air conditioned bathroom.

Once again, this day was truly a successand if you have not been to a show orhelped out, you don’t know what you aremissing. See you next year!

Blindly GoingWhere No…….By Ginger Christiansen

With twice as many obstacles and moretwists and turns, The Blind Driver Ob-stacle Course was set up at the Show ofDreams to tempt drivers with their derring-do and entertain the spectators. Severalcorgis (cardboard version) met their de-mise, buildings relocated and markerscrunched. The really curious approachedthe Lucas Factory to see why it wassmoking – it’s the Lucas Factory is rea-son enough. Copilots signaled with theirhands to no avail as blindfolded driverswere at a loss as to what to do next.Seven cars crept to the finish line. MarkDesenberg and co-pilot Dianne won withthe fastest time of 6 minutes, 25 seconds.Steve Busch and his copilot came in sec-ond finishing the course in 7 minutes, 45seconds. Keith Thompson and co-pilotTrish navigated a clean route but theirpace was slower than Mark’s and Steve’stime. After much pleading one of the con-stables from Merrimack drove my Miniwith one of the vendors as copilot. He,along with most of the other drivers, statedthat they felt as if they weren’t moving atall and that in it was disconcerting.

This year’s location for the course andfor the show in general was ideal. Com-ing into the grounds one drove right pastthe obstacle course and got a peek thatpeaked your interest. For those who par-ticipated in this drive, white-knuckled orno, it was loads of fun to watch.

Reflections on theSunapee Dinner

Cruiseby Laurie Gallagher

I just don’t know how we could have hadan afternoon more perfect than that ofJune 28th. Beautiful blue sky with puffyclouds, a little breeze, and best of all, nosticky humidity. Just the perfect day fora drive in an LBC and a lovely cruise onthe calm waters of Lake Sunapee. Forany who have not done this with BCNH,you must plan on it next year. But, bewarned, sign up as early as you can as itis always sold out.

We arrived early enough to find the smallwaterfront parking lot mostly available butit was decorated with LBCs in short or-der, which added a special feature for lo-cals and vacationers who took advantageof the moment to strike up conversationswith members as they stepped from theircars. Both the Mt. Sunapee and the Mt.Kearsarge ships were picturesque inSunapee harbor and our dinner was to beaboard the smaller Mt. Sunapee as shebelonged to BCNH for the evening. TheCaptain and staff were most gracious intheir welcome. The Captain filled us inon features of the lake as well as whosome of those impressive waterfronthomes belong to. One nice feature ofthis particular lake is that there is still alot of undeveloped and protected water-

front property so it does not look like anaquatic suburbia as many do, but has amore unspoiled, natural aspect. You canenjoy the mountain vistas without seeinga mountain of condos. There are alsothree small but functional light houses onthis lake, each in a charming setting.

The food was plentiful in the well tendedbuffet… the roast beef was cut just foryou, the pulled pork was tasty and thebarbecued chicken was tender. And youcould have all three! There were plentyof sides to accommodate any taste as wellas all the salad fixin’s you could want. No, it wasn’t a gourmet experience but itpassed muster and the scenery was su-perlative. Oh, and there was your choiceof chocolate or strawberry layer cake fordessert!

After dinner there was time to relax onthe upper deck for a drink and fresh air, lovely scenery and conversation. TheCaptain did a Mitchell turn to make thetrip complete and we headed back to theharbor with plenty of daylight for theevening drive home. This was an enjoy-able and relaxing experience with theusual mirth and merriment indicative ofBCNH.

Berkshire British Motor ClubReview by Al Chicote

July 26th, Saturday - British Cars ofNH’s (BCNH) 18th Annual ‘Show ofDreams’

Saturday’s pre dawn light found daugh-ter and I scooting over VT and NH backroads (not in the Elva) winding our wayto the British Cars of NH, 'Show ofDreams’ in Hudson NH, a three hour trip, one way for us. Several BBMC mem-bers Hal Kramer (MG TD), Anita andSteve Busch (Daimler SP 250) and KeithDewy (Lotus Elsie) also wound their wayover to join 175 plus other British carsand their stewards for the 2014 Show ofDreams. The weather was perfect as wasthe location for this year’s ‘Show ofDreams’. Each BBMC member won aclass award, first or second places. Steveentered the ‘Blind Driver’ event andcame in second overall. Not an easy featseeing as the driver is blindfolded and onlyhas the passenger/ navigator talking theirway through the twisty hazardous courselined with pylons and other don’t hit items. On occasion the verbal communicationsare quite verbal. Being a British car event, along the course were cardboard boxesthat looked like British phone booths, theQueens castle, the Queen (life size cutout), stone walls and Corgis along sidesome pylons. Penalty points for hittingany. Running over a Corgi resulted in aloud whimpering, injurious squealing of adying Corgi (made by the BCNH mem-ber overseeing the course). Good soundeffect to the point that one couple walk-ing their dog sees and hears the results ofa squashed cardboard Corgi at which thehusband replies “Poor Monty (their dogsname) just witnessed a Corgi beingkilled.”, at which point his wife franticallylooks around asking “Where ? Where ?”then pushes her husband when he pointsto where and what. The course also re-quired having to back into a car width-length space. Low time and no penaltypoints being the goal. A hoot to watch thecommunications, gesturing etc., betweennavigator and driver. A friend of ours won

the ‘Diamond in the rough’ award whichwas a large plastic tub filled with car pol-ish, leather creams, etc. (to spiffy up thecar) for his all original 1954 Riley two doorroadster. Lauren heard him say after-wards “This stuff won’t be used on theRiley.”, so I’m guessing he’ll have one ofthe spiffiest tractors in the County. Greatshow with gobs of interesting people, sto-ries and interesting tips on preservation. One car has been in the family since newin 1948 and looked it. Like an old loafer, well worn and comfortable. I was im-pressed with the number of such vehiclesshowing.

Faith Lamprey and Bruce Vild of the 'Brit-ish Marque’ where there and presented

a special award to the stewards of a carthat best represents the ‘ideology of stew-ardship’ of a British Car. That award wentto a couple who bought their MGB new, enjoyed it and as the family grew storedthe MGB in a corner of their garage, re-vived the ‘B’ to enjoy once again afterthe family grew up and ventured out ontheir own. An all original with age cor-rect accessories, patina and wear.

I highly recommend this event be addedto one’s ‘must attend’ list for next sea-son. Very well organized, great venue, good vendors, food, and a great time. Allfor a great cause, ‘The High Hopes Foun-dation of NH’ and ‘The New HampshireFood Bank’.
