The Final PushAlbright begins the final stretch of the regular season today against Steven-son. The Lions will be severely tested in their last two games, which includes today’s road game against the Mus-tangs and a home date with Lebanon Valley to close the regular season.

An Eye on the PostseasonLooking ahead to the stretch run of the conference season, Delaware Val-ley still sits in the driver’s seat for the MAC title. The Aggies own victories over both Stevenson and Albright, which are the two teams they are tied with for first place. Without a Dela-ware Valley loss, Albright can do no better than a share of the conference title. The Lions face a tough road ahead with today’s game followed by a home game against Lebanon Valley to end the season. Delaware Valley visits Lycoming today and hosts Widener to finish the season. Stevenson faces Albright today and closes the season at FDU-Florham.

Versus the MustangsStevenson has been a thorn in the Lions side since the series began in 2011. Albright won the first game 57-21, but since then every game has been decided by seven points or less. The Lions defeated Stevenson 29-22 in overtime in 2012 and Stevenson won 24-18 in 2013 and 13-6 last season in Shirk Stadium.

Tracking MarzkaAlbright head coach John Marzka has put together an impressive resume during his nine years at the helm of the Lions program. He has compiled a 66-31 overall record and has advanced to postseason play in seven of his eight seasons. He ranks second only to John Potsklan (144) in career coaching wins at Albright.

Rank and FileAlbright was ranked in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll for the fifth consecutive week as the Lions came in at No. 20 this week.

Fond MemoriesAlbright senior kicker Daniel Sobo-lewski has fond memories of Steven-

son. Sobolewski converted a 47-yard field goal as time expired to send the 2012 meeting into overtime in a game the Lions eventually won 29-22. The kick was Sobolewski’s first-ever attempt in a Lion uniform and tied the then school record.

Let’s Start in the Second QuarterAlbright has dominated the opposition in the second quarter of games this season. The Lions have outscored op-ponents 133-29 in the second stanza of games, which marks its highest point total for any quarter. Albright also holds an 82-28 advantage in the fourth quarter this season.

Mack the KnifeSenior linebacker Demonya Womack turned in an outstanding performance in the Lions 38-28 victory over King’s last Saturday. He notched a career-high 13 tackles to lead the team, which also ranks as the most tackles for an Albright player this season.

I See You and Raise YouAlbright senior Colton Ryan had the Lions longest interception return of the season at 79 yards heading into the King’s game on Saturday. The co-captain raised the bar as he returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter against the Monarchs. The return ranks as the second-longest interception return in school history behind only the school record 102-yard return set by Dick Riffle during the 1937 season. It also is tied for the second-longest return of any kind in Albright history. Ryan is now the holder of the two longest plays for Albright this season.

We Win With 40With its 51-6 victory versus FDU-Flo-rham, Albright improved to 44-1 when scoring at least 30 points in a game and a perfect 23-0 when scoring at least 40 points in a contest under the direction of head coach John Marzka.

Scoring Comes EasyAlbright is the top scoring team in the Middle Atlantic Conference averaging 37.2 points per game. The Lions have topped 30 points in a game on five oc-casions, which includes a season-high

Road WarriorsAlbright will be attempting to complete the regular season with an undefeated road record. The Lions are currently 4-0 in road games this year with victories against Lycoming, Mi-sericordia, FDU-Florham and King’s. A John Marzka-coached team has never had an undefeated road record and it would mark the first time the Lions have turned the trick since the 2004 season.

Regionally SpeakingAlbright is ranked sixth in the first NCAA Division III East Region rankings released on Wednesday. The rankings will help to determine the 32-team field for the NCAA playoffs. Wesley is ranked first in the East Region followed by Delaware Valley, St. Lawrence, Cortland State, Fram-ingham State, Albright, Stevenson, Western New England, Alfred and Rensselaer.

Receiving a Passing GradeAlbright has turned to the passing game in the last four games to gener-ate touchdowns. Lions quarterbacks have thrown 11 touchdown passes in the last four games with at least three touchdown passes in three of those contests.

Getting a Good ReturnThe Albright special team units have been outstanding all season long and the Lions kick return unit turned in its top performance of the season in the win at King’s. The Lions generated a season-best 123 yards on five kick returns in the victory, highlighted by a 40-yard return by sophomore Malik Jackson.

Taking it Upon ThemselvesThe Albright defense has taken mat-ters into its own hands this season and leads the nation in defensive touchdowns. Colton Ryan and Kali Boyce each returned an intercep-tion for a touchdown in Albright’s 38-28 victory over King’s to raise the season total to five. Ryan and Boyce

joined Donte Thomas, Steve Barroso and Grant Boehler as Lions who have scored on defense. Thomas returned a fumble for a touchdown, while Barroso and Boehler returned interceptions for scores.

Not Much for CompanyAlbright senior Steve Barroso cur-rently ranks as one of only two players in NCAA Division III to have over 50 tackles, five interceptions and three fumble recoveries on the season. The only other player to accumulate those numbers is Micah McMaster of Greensboro.

Leader of the MACAlbright leads the Middle Atlantic Conference in 16 different categories both as a team and individually. The Lions are tops in the MAC in blocked kicks allowed (0), blocked punts allowed (0), scoring offense (37.3), completion percentage (64.6), time of possession (31:36), winning per-centage (.875), defensive touchdowns (5), fewest passes intercepted (8), red zone defense (60.0) and team passing efficiency (142.3). Individually, Daniel Sobolewski ranks first in the confer-ence in punting (43.0), Steve Barroso leads the MAC in fumble recoveries (3) and passes intercepted per game (0.6), Malik Gilmore leads the league in punt return touchdowns (1) and Mike Knight leads the MAC in completion percentage (62.8) and passing efficien-cy (130.3).

Defense Leads to OffenseThe Albright defense has forced oppo-nents into 26 turnovers this season and the Lion offense has taken advantage of those turnovers. Albright has scored 120 of its 298 points (40.3 percent) on the season following an opponent turnover.

Boom ShakalakaAlbright senior Daniel Sobolewski averaged a season-best 64.7 yards on seven kickoffs against King’s, which included three touchbacks. For the sea-son, Sobolewski is averaging 63.1 yards per kickoff and has 26 touchbacks, which is more than the combined total of the rest of the kickers in the MAC.

Albright Head Coach John Marzka

www.albrightathletics.com

Albright Head Coach John Marzka (9th Season, 66-31)Head coach John Marzka is in his ninth season at the helm of the Albright College football program. Named head coach in 2007, he and his staff inherited a 2-8 team and have since directed one of the most impressive turnarounds in NCAA history. The Lions have amassed a 66-31 record and four post-season wins since Marzka’s arrival. His 74% win ratio prior to the start of the 2010 season was the best for any Albright football coach with at least three seasons leading the program, while his 26 wins are the most of any Lions gridiron coach in his first three years on the job.

The 2014 season was another successful one for Albright as Marzka and his staff turned in one of their top coaching performances. The Lions started the season with a 1-4 record before reeling off five consecutive wins to conclude the regular season. Albright earned its seventh postseason trip under Marzka with a berth in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl versus Salisbury.

The 2013 season produced a second straight 8-3 record and ECAC bowl victory. A senior-heavy team defeated nationally-ranked Lebanon Valley, falling just short of the MAC championship due to an overtime loss at Lycoming. Senior safety Drew Peterson and sophomore kicker Daniel Sobolewski earned All-American honors from multiple organizations, including Peterson’s selection to the Associated Press Little All-America squad (Albright’s first since 1998). The Lions had 16 All-MAC selections (second-most in program history), two D3football.com All-Region players and four All-ECAC nods.

Albright went 8-3 in 2012, making a return trip to the ECAC South-East Bowl. This time the Lions emerged victorious, with a thrilling fourth quarter comeback on the road against Franklin & Marshall. Albright also rallied from 19 points down on the road to defeat #14 Kean University. The 2012 campaign brought 11 All-MAC selections and two All-American nods. Senior wide receiver Scott Pillar was named to the prestigious AFCA Coaches All-America team and signed a rookie free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams in the spring.

Marzka led the Lions to a 6-5 mark in 2011 and a spot in the ECAC South-East Bowl. With one of the more difficult schedules in re-cent team history, all five of Albright’s losses came to teams that went 8-3 or better. Albright set several school and conference records in a 65-26 home win over Wilkes, and quarterback T.J. Luddy set a MAC record for completion percentage in a victory at Stevenson. Albright’s special teams were especially strong, earning two All-Region recognitions (punter Brooks Mitzkewich and gunner Matt Hnatiuk). Additionally, wide receiver Scott Pillar was named to the All-Region and All-ECAC teams, fullback Marty Reinhardt added All-ECAC honors, and Pillar was named a BSN All-American.

In 2010, despite finishing with a 5-5 mark overall, Marzka worked extremely hard to develop and mold the future of the Albright football program. In his fourth season with the Lions, Marzka led the Red and White to the program’s first win over Geneva Col-lege in over 70 years, as part of the first-ever PAC-MAC Challenge. He also compiled a three-game win streak in the middle of the season, in which the Lions outscored those conference rivals 114-56. Also in that season, junior Josan Holmes added his name to the program’s record books by becoming the all-time and single-season rushing touchdown leader. At the end of the 2010 campaign a combined seven players earned all-conference honors, which was third most in the MAC.

The Lions’ 2009 campaign proved to be the most successful season in Albright football history, as the Red and White finished 11-2 and advanced to the 3rd round of the NCAA National Playoffs for the first time in school history. Albright’s 11 wins were the most ever in the 103 years of the storied program, while their final ranking of ninth in the country was the school’s highest AFCA national ranking ever. The Lions also ranked 3rd in the final ECAC-Lambert Meadowlands Division III Football Poll after making their first trip to the NCAA playoffs since 1996.

In the final regular season game, Albright played themselves into the NCAA tournament with a thrilling come-from-behind, double overtime victory over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) rival Lebanon Valley College 44-43, to finish the regular season at 9-1 and receive an at-large bid to the post-season. In the first round, Albright went on the road to upset higher-seeded Alfred University 35-25. The Lions then traveled to Doylestown, Pa., for round two, to unseat Delaware Valley College 27-3 and avenge their only loss of the regular season. The Lions’ run came to an end in the national quarterfinals versus eventual runner-up Mount Union College in Alliance, OH.

This record-setting season produced 10 All-Conference selections, three D3football.com All-East Region honorees, three ECAC 1st Team All-Stars, MAC Offensive Player of the Year, ECAC Southeast Player of the Year, ECAC overall Division III Player of the Year, D3football.com East Region Player of the Year and one D3football.com All-American selection. Additionally, among D3football.com and the ECAC and MAC Conferences, the Lions earned 12 “Player of the Week” honors for outstanding individual game perfor-mances in 2009. Most importantly, the Red and White put 11 Lions on the MAC Academic Honor Roll, and 32 student-athletes attained a 3.0 GPA or higher for the fall 2009 semester.

In recognition of his leadership, Marzka was named the 2009 John C. Whitehead / Nike NCAA Division III Coach of the Year. In ac-cepting the award, Marzka responded, “This is quite an honor, but it is merely a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our coaching staff and student-athletes towards reaching their full potential. When you are able to provide an environment where each player can strive daily to reach his full potential as a person, as a student and as an athlete, the results on the field and the accolades simply take care of themselves.”

In 2008, Marzka led the Lions to the program’s first MAC Championship in 11 years. Outstanding performances again abounded, as Albright boasted eight All-Conference honorees, MAC Rookie of the Year, two All-East Region selections, three Southeast All-Stars and one All-American honoree. Additionally, eight players earned “Player of the Week” honors for individual game production. A 2008 candidate for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award, Marzka led the Lions to their first eight-win season since 1997 and first post-season bowl victory since 2004, as they beat perennial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) power Montclair State Uni-versity, 42-14, in the ECAC South Central Championship Game. For the fall 2008 semester, Albright placed 13 players on the MAC Academic Honor Roll, while 33 student-athletes attained a 3.0 or higher GPA.

In 2007, Marzka’s first season at Albright, he led the Lions to a second place finish in the MAC and an appearance in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl. With a 7-4 record, Marzka and his staff achieved one of the best year-to-year turnarounds in all of Division III, as the Red and White won 5 more games than in the previous season. Along the way, the Lions produced eight All-Conference selections, the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, two All-East Region honorees, one All-American and one Academic All-American selection. Individual Lions received “Player of the Week” recognition a total of 16 times, 11 student-athletes were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll and 33 players achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA for the fall 2007 semester.

A native of Erie, Pa., Marzka earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Allegheny College in 1991. He was a three-year letter winner and two-year starter at center for the Gators, and served as senior co-captain on the 1990 NCAA Division III National Championship team. Marzka was a two time first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) selection as offensive center and named a Champion 1st Team All-American as a senior, after garnering honorable mention All-American honors his junior year. Marzka, the 1990 Claire Jackson Outstanding Offensive Lineman recipient, also helped the Gators earn three NCAC Championships, two trips to the NCAA Playoffs and a 36-7-2 overall record during his playing career.

READING, Pa. -- Steve Barroso had 2.5 sacks and 13 tackles, but the Albright College football team lost its Homecoming game to Stevenson 13-6 on Saturday at Shirk Stadium in a Middle Atlantic Conference contest.

Barroso also added four tackles for loss and led the Lions defense with 13 total tackles, including seven solo tackles. The Albright defense, led by Barroso, limited Stevenson to just 146 yards ot total offense on the day. The Mustangs could muster only 107 yards rushing and 39 yards through the air against the Lion defenders. Albright also recorded five sacks and picked off two passes.

Albright took advantage of a big special teams play to jump out to an early lead. After Stevenson went three and out on its first drive, Gerrod Gainer returned the ensuing punt 49 yards to the Stevenson 17-yard line. The Lions took a 3-0 lead when Daniel Sobolewski nailed a 39-yard attempt with 13:12 to play in the opening quarter.

Stevenson tied the game midway through the second quarter when Tim Sternfeld connected on a 41-yard field goal with 9:34 remain-ing before halftime.

Stevenson, which remained undefeated on the season, took ad-vantage of an Albright fumble early in the third quarter to take the lead. Chris Coffie forced a fumble by Danny Tighe, which was recovered by Charles Brown and returned to the Albright 4-yard line. Trey Lee then punched it in the end zone on the next play and Stevenson took a 10-3 following the successful point after attempt.

After a Stevenson three and out midway through the third quarter the Lions put together a 12-play, 36-yard drive but were forced to punt when the drive stalled at the Mustang 35-yard line.

The Lions had a golden opportunity to tie the game after a Ste-venson turnover on the Mustangs next possession. Jamal Hayden forced a fumble and recovered the fumble at the Stevenson 14-yard line with 5:09 to play in the third quarter setting Albright up with outstanding field possession.

Three rushing attempts yielded three yards and the Lions had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Sobolewski to cut the lead to 10-6.

The Lions drove to the Stevenson 24-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but a 41-yard field goal attempt by Sobolewski was blocked by Austin Tennessee.

Stevenson (4-0, 3-0 MAC) put together a time-consuming march in the fourth quarter that helped seal the victory. The Mustangs had a 14-play, 61-yard march that chewed up 6:41 on the clock. Although the Mustangs turned it over on downs, Albright had only 1:21 when it began its last drive.

Patrick Wise found Gerrod Gainer for 13 yards on the first play of the drive and later connected with Malik Gilmore for nine yards on a 4th and 7 play to keep the drive alive, but Tennessee intercepted a Lion pass in the end zone with four seconds left on the clock to clinch the win.

Wise was 13-33 for 90 yards, while Chris Dawson led the Albright rushing attack with 39 yards. Vinny Williams caught four passes for 36 yards for the Lions.

Trey Lee had 120 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown to pace the Stevenson offensive attack, while Tennessee had seven tackles, intercepted a pass, had three pass breakups and blocked a kick.

Albright dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play with the loss. The Lions will face Delaware Valley next Saturday (Oct. 4) in Doylestown, Pa.
