Rochester Community and Technical College Fall 2014

Page 31: 2014 RCTC Annual Report

Farewell President emeritus hillPresident Emeritus Charles E. Hill passed away June30, 2014 after 99 full years. His dedication to the College was unwavering. Coming from Creston, Iowa, Hill was hired as Dean of Rochester Junior College (RJC) in 1953, a title later changed to President in 1968, With twenty-nine years of leading the College. Hill has the honor of being its longest-serving President.

During his tenure, the College went through many changes. In 1953, RJC had 236 students and was located in downtown Rochester. By the time Hill retired in 1982, there were more than 3,200 students, and the campus had relocated to 160 acres on the east side of Rochester. Even after retirement, Hill was a great supporter of the College and its students. He attended concerts, plays, and sporting events, and he continued to host “The Big Band Era” radio program that aired on the campus radio station. The Minnesota State Board for Community

Colleges granted Emeritus status to Hill in 1982, and in 1987, the College performing arts auditorium was renamed the Charles Hill Theater. Charlie Hill continues to serve students even now: three endowed scholarships established in his name are granted yearly, and lecture series funds are available to bring guest lecturers to campus. His name and memory will be held close at the College and remain a steadfast example of dedication to students, education, and friendship.
