Hey there,

My name is Darius Lukas and I am the founder of www.letssandbox.com — the platform for creativity, growth and remarkable living.

As a small present to the growing Let’s Sandbox community, I have created this 2014 Planning Workbook.

Take an hour before the New Year to sit down and review your achievements in 2013 and set your goals for 2014.

Having the clear vision of where you want to be by the end of 2014 and what you have to do in order to accomplish it can bring astonishing results.

Let’s Sandbox is about playing and spontaneity. Some might think that thorough planning eradicates these qualities from our lives. Not at all! I am a great believer that having a good framework only fosters the kind of playing, which leads to unique experiences and big discoveries.

First, let’s review the past year. It is important to acknowledge what we have achieved in order to set goals and map out our actions for 2014.

Make yourself a cup of tea or coffee. Put on some relaxing music. Sit down and spend about 2-3 minutes going through your year, month by month. Simply run your mind over the major events, which happened in your life in 2013.

It isn’t enough to aim high and do everything you can to achieve it. You need to have a good time doing it. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Consider how you will enjoy the process of achieving your goals in 2014. It might be as simple as redecorating your workroom, so you can enjoy spending time there.

Set aside the time once a week for a meeting with yourself to review your progress. This should be time when you are alone, ideally at the end or the beginning of the week. You should see this as an important board meeting, which, if it were at work, you would never miss.

Every small step counts. Reward yourself as a loving parent rewards a child. If, during the week, you managed to get some useful advice from a colleague, completed a big task or won a small competition – give yourself a treat. Take yourself to a spa, football match, theatre or buy yourself a lovely present – it can be anything. The only requirement is to do it alone. This reward is only for you.

Choreographer Twyla Sharp says they are necessary for a creative person. In her book ‘The Creative Habit’, she talks about her ritual of waking up at 5.30a.m., jumping into a taxi and asking the driver to take her to the gym. Twyla emphasises that her ritual is completed the minute she tells the driver where to go.

What could your rituals be in 2014? (A few ideas: waking up an hour earlier, meditating, reading inspiring books and writing down your thoughts; going to the park every evening for a short walk and contemplating the passing day; lying in the bath every Sunday evening and planning your week. Whatever you choose, remember that your ritual should bring you pleasure.)

Half of the journey

We all know that having a plan and knowing where you’re heading is half a journey travelled; the other half is taking action and achieving your goals. That is why we suggested holding weekly board meetings with yourself: to keep checking on your progress, evaluating and making changes, if needed.

Columbus’ plan

Life is, of course, unpredictable and unforeseen things often happen. This workbook, we hope, will have served you in defining the direction you want to take in 2014. However, you can’t fully plan the final outcome or destination and that’s all right (otherwise there would be no surprise, right?). Even when Columbus thoroughly planned his mission to reach the Far East and ended up in the Americas instead, it wasn’t such a disaster after all, was it?

Explore

So, next year, have your eyes on the prize and keep yourself accountable to this plan but, at the same time, don’t forget to explore all that life has got to offer!
