Blackboard is a virtual learning environment used throughout the university

You can use any of the four university libraries; they are open 24/7 for most of the academic year. They contain quiet, group and silent study spaces, and 100,000s of print and online resources to support your course. At Harrow, we also have a mixture of Macs and PCs with key software from Microsoft and Adobe; and you can even borrow laptops from us!

• 9am-11pm Mon-Sun (from 22nd Sept); and 24/7 (from 27th Oct).

• THIS WEEK 9am-5pm Mon-Sun (excluding Saturday 20 Sept) until 22nd Sept.

Library Search lists printed and electronic books and journals; and DVDs and databases. There is also a section where you can search for articles from journals.

Run a search for ‘film noir’ in Library Search and you will get about 114 results

Run the same search in ‘Articles & more’, and you get more like 4500 results!!

Finding printed books and journals and DVDs

Use Library Search to find the location of items. The ‘shelf reference’ will indicate exactly where the item is located, and you can pick the item up and issue it to yourself using the self-service kiosks.

First Floor: Reference and Key Text collections + numbers 001- 699. Second Floor: DVD collection, printed journals + numbers 700-999.

Hold Requests

To place a hold request, login to Library Search to identify the book you want and use the Hold link within the locations tab. There is no charge for this service.

Use the self-service kiosks to borrow or return books and DVDs. Instructions are clearly displayed on the screen of the kiosks - follow these carefully.

Your loan entitlement

You can borrow up to fifteen items at one time (up to 3 audio-visual items). Books are issued for one or three week periods.DVDs are issued for one week

Renew your books and DVDs

Books can be renewed from within the MyLibaryAccount area of Library Search any number of times as long as no one else has requested them. DVDs can be renewed once.

Library Fines

There are no fines! However, if you return items more than one day late, your Library Account is suspended for the amount of time that the item is late – up to a maximum of ten weeks. A suspension means no loans, and no renewals, but doesn’t affect your IT Account.

Online Resources

Key e-resources include: Art Full Text; Arts Proquest; Box of Broadcasts; CREDO Reference; Film Indexes Online; Oxford Art Online; JSTOR; Safari; Screen Online; and STASH. Links to all these are provided on Library Search. Try adding some to your e-shelf straight away!

Off-site access to e-resources

To access e-resources off-site, look for the ‘shibboleth’ link. (This is sometimes described as ‘Where are you from?’ ‘Remote users login via home organization’ ‘Select login via your institution’ or ‘UK Federation Login’).
