From the editorThe Book of Lists you are reading is the most

valuable tool for business development in the tri-county region. Now in its 14th edition, the Book of Lists has been a signature production of the Business Times since it made its debut in our first year of publication.

The 2014 edition reflects a renewed emphasis on research at the Business Times, with several exciting initiatives that will be rolled out throughout the New Year.

In case you are reading the Book of Lists for the first time, it is provided free of charge to our subscribers at the end of December. It is available in digital for-mats for an additional charge of $169.99 via our website at www.pacbiztimes.com.

The Book of Lists is the capstone of our edi-torial calendar, containing valuable information about thousands of companies in the Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo county re-gion. Your paid subscription also includes:

• Access to our digital news offerings at www.pacbiztimes.com.

• Weekly print editions that are packed with breaking news, in-depth focus sections, sales leads, personal finance ideas and a lively, unbi-ased opinion page.

• Special reports including Dealmakers of the Year, Family Business Awards, Top 50 Women in Business, the 101 One Hundred/Hall of Fame, Region’s Richest, Champions of Health Care, Spirit of Small Business, 50 Fastest-Growing Companies, 40 Under 40 and our annual Tax & Financial Planning Guide.

• Who’s Who sections designed to give you a look at top players in commercial real estate, pro-

fessional services, agribusiness, clean technolo-gy, banking, health care and the nonprofit sector.

The Business Times has repeatedly been rec-ognized with national and regional awards for excellence in journalism. In 2013, Managing Ed-

itor Marlize van Romburgh was named one of “25 under 35” news industry lead-ers by Editor & Publisher magazine. In December, we were honored with the Ventura Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Poinsettia Award in the medium-sized company category.

The Book of Lists would not be pos-sible without the support of our sponsors. Our gratitude goes out to gold sponsors Bartlett, Pringle & Wolf and Commu-

nity West Bank, and silver sponsors, Limoneira Co., Tolman & Wiker Insurance Services, Cox Communications, Montecito Bank & Trust and Wells Fargo Bank.

I’d also like to thank our chapter sponsors: Buynak, Fauver, Archbald & Spray, Commu-nity Bank, HUB International, Verizon, Dignity Health St. John’s Hospitals, Staples Construction Co., California Lutheran University and Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach.

Finally, this year’s Book of Lists marks the debut performance of Erika Martin, a UC Santa Barbara alumna who joined our staff as Special Reports/Research Editor just in time to take on this mammoth task. Well done, Erika!

Our iconic cover images depict, from left to right, the Santa Barbara harbor, Ventura harbor and Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County.

From the research directorThis Book of Lists is the culmi-

nation of a year’s worth of research, digging and fact-checking to create what we believe is the most com-prehensive and quantitative guide to doing business in the Tri-Counties.

From January through De-cember, the Business Times collects data from thousands of companies and organizations in the region and digs through hundreds of public documents to create a book that we hope is truly useful, whether you’re looking for sales leads or busi-ness services.

The success of this year’s Book of Lists is largely thanks to Business Times’ Managing Editor Marlize van Romburgh and previous Re-search Director Dara Barney, who conducted surveys of hundreds of tri-county businesses and institutions prior to my arrival.

It is understandable that private companies are under no obligation to disclose their revenue and employee numbers, so I would like to thank the vast majority of firms that will-ingly offered up that information in the interest of creating this business resource.

If you want to know who the big names in tri-county business are, you’ll want to check out the Larg-est Private Employers list, Fastest-

Growing Companies list and Larg-est Public Companies list. We’ve had some interesting newcomers to those lists this year, including Pen-nyMac Financial Services, which has

emerged as one of Ventura County’s largest employers in the space of a few years.

But, of course, bigger isn’t always better. We also take pride in producing various niche lists, including the Woman-Owned Busi-nesses list, Hispanic-Owned Businesses list and Family-Owned Businesses list.

Some go-to resources if you’re looking for business services are highlighted in the first chapter of this book, where you’ll find lists of the largest law firms in the region, mov-ing and storage companies, staffing services firms and software and IT firms.

I am excited to embark on my role as research director for the Business Times and hope to expand the scope of our lists even further. If you have suggestions for other new list cat-egories you’d like to see or know of a business that should be considered for a list, please get in touch.

Here’s to a prosperous 2014!
