2014 Detroit Annual Conference

Preliminary Report of the Committee on Nomination

2014 Detroit Annual Conference Session May 15-18, 2014

Adrian College • Adrian, Mich.

Preliminary  Report  of  the  Committee  on  Nominations  Detroit  Annual  Conference

The  Conference  Leadership  Team  (CLT)  has  reviewed  various  agencies  and  has  made  suggestions  that  are  to  be

considered  by  the  Detroit  Annual  Conference  at  its  May,  2014,  meeting.    In  summary,  these  changes  are  intended  to  enhance  the  value  of  the  agency  by  focusing  on  empowerment,  alignment  and  fulfillment  of  disciplinary

mandates  and  conference  vision  pathways.

After  learning  CLT’s  plans,  the  Committee  on  Nominations  unanimously  supported  the  changes,  and  we  developed  agencies,  following  Standard  Rules  guidelines,  to  provide  talent  for  all  agencies.    It  is  the  Standing  Rules  position

that  we  can  only  report  information  that  is  in  effect  at  the  time  of  annual  conference.    Therefore,  the  attached  information  covers  the  agencies  that  are  approved  as  of  today.    After  the  CLT  proposals  are  approved  during  the

Detroit  Annual  Conference,  the  annual  conference  members  will  be  provided  a  second  list  which  fulfills  the  structure  described  in  the  Standing  Rules  at  that  time.

There  are  a  number  of  reasons  to  use  this  report:

1. Conference  agencies  provide  the  leadership  and  talent  to  create  disciples  for  Jesus  Christ  for  the  transformation  of  the  world.    Review  this  report  to  see  if  you  know  members  who  have  passions  and  skills

to  serve  our  agencies.  2. Verify  that  the  information  presented  is  correct.    Please  report  any  additions,  deletions  or  changes  to  the

Committee  on  Nominations.    See  the  information  at  the  end  of  the  report.    Note  that  the  date  listed  for  each  name  is  the  date  of  the  Annual  Conference  when  the  person  was  initially  elected,  i.e.,  (10)  means  the  person

was  elected  in  2010.    And  the  information  that  preceded  each  name  identifies  the  district,  i.e.,  DR  means  Detroit  Renaissance.

3. Agencies  have  vacancies  when  a  blank  line  (________)  is  listed.    In  these  situations,  the  Committee  on  Nominations  has  no  knowledge  of  persons  who  have  the  passions,  skills  and  time  to  fill  the  job.    Please  go  to

http://detroitconference.org/NominationsCommittee    to  find  a  description  of  the  agency  and  a  Nominations  Application  to  begin  processing  your  nomination,  if  you  know  of  a  person  qualified  to  fill  the  vacancy.

Individuals  can  be  nominated  by  anyone  in  the  Detroit  Annual  Conference,  and  self-‐nominations  are  encouraged.    Nominations  Applications  will  be  accepted  for  the  2014-‐2015  Report  up  to  3:00pm  on  May  17

at  Detroit  Annual  Conference.

The  Committee  on  Nominations  highly  values  the  geographical  distribution  of  our  members.    So  Districts  that  have  minimal  or  no  representation  frequently  are  not  adequately  represented.    If  you  are  from  such  a  District,  we

encourage  you  to  begin  a  Nominations  Application  for  yourself  or  others.

The  2014  Journal  will  include  the  lay  addresses  for  laity  included  on  our  agencies.    If  you  are  a  layman  or  a  laywoman  and  your  address  is  incorrect  in  the  2013  Journal,  please  send  an  email  promptly  to

[email protected]  with  the  correct  information.

Please  see  information  about  the  Detroit  Annual  Conference  Discovery  Tool,  which  provides  important  information  to  provide  a  pool  of  talent  for  future  needs.

Detroit Annual Conference Committee on Nominations

Presents A Special Program for the benefit of all Christians Want  a  big  return  on  your  investment  in  your  parishioners?  Want  a  major  investment  in  people’s  lives  and  their  faith

development?  Here’s  the  story.

When Jesus calls us to become followers, he promises us an abundant life. To discover that life we are called to offer all that we have and all that we are in service to Christ, so nothing can interfere with our awareness of why we exist. This is often the area where our disciple training falls apart. We often have not had a plan to help disciples discover their gifts for ministry or place(s) of service. We just hope that somehow they will find their meaning and purpose in life. We often struggle to find the right people to serve in the right places so that the mission of Christ will move forward. Often we end up choosing the wrong people.

There are excellent tools available to assist us in this task. It may seem like just more “busy work” when we have so many other things to do. But helping disciples discover their place(s) of ministry is not “an extra.” It is vital to what we are called to as pastors. Paul writes in I Corinthians 12:1 “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed” (NRSV) and yet we often keep disciples uninformed about spiritual gifts and how God uses them to accomplish God’s will.

A very simple resource that you are encouraged to use is the Detroit Conference’s “Discovery Tool” that can be used by members of your congregation online at www.detroitconference.org/pages/detail/1927. Members will be able (with your encouragement) to do the survey online when they have the time – they do not have to come to the church for a class/event.

WHY USE THE “DISCOVERY TOOL”? What’s in it for you and your church?

This simple questionnaire on our conference website will be a good step forward (a starting point) in helping your church match passions and skills with ministry opportunities so that disciples may find more fulfillment and a minimum of frustration in their faith development while they serve in effective ways. The data for your church members will be sent to you to assist your Committee on Nominations and Leadership Development as they do their important work of choosing leadership for the ministries of your church. It will also begin to build a database for the conference as we get to know the gifts and talents within our many congregations.

One of the beneficial ways disciples can find their best place of service is by discovering and serving from their God-given gifts. Whether that service is inside the church or outside in the community, God’s gifts enable us to fulfill a call to service.

If your church already does a “gifts/passions/skills” survey we would urge you to use this online survey to update your current data and get others started who have not participated in such a program yet.

The Conference Committee on Nominations

Once you have used this simple conference resource you might consider a more extensive plan to follow up, such as: Serving from the Heart: Finding Your Gifts and Talents for Service by Carol Cartmill and Yvonne Gentile. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw9w-VSacTU) This curriculum is designed to help you consider all areas of life – using the “STRIDE” acronym, it covers the following areas: Spiritual Gifts, Talents, Resources, Individuality, Dreams and Experiences.

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.” (1 Pet. 4:10)
