2014 Newsletter Pre-concussion Screening E. Blackford Noland, Jr. MD, FACP th Health Focus of Southwest Virginia conducted its annual sports physicals at Northside High School on May 18 , following the Virginia High School League format. In addition we administered a pre-concussion testing screen (BSCAT) taken from the (SCAT-2) standard concussion assessment tool-2 which collects performance data from students that can be used as a reference if that student sustains a concussion. The testing included: concussion history, a symptom score, (BESS) balance error scoring system, the (SAC) sideline assessment of concussion which includes orientation, word recall and concentration. Students vary in their performance in these areas such as repeating a list of 5 words (three times in a row) and 5 minutes later repeating these same 5 words; and repeating all the months of the year, “backward.” The value of pre-concussion screening is that testing the same parameters after a student athlete has sustained a concussion should be more accurate comparing that student's prior performance than to a national standard. It was clear that there was a 30% variation in total score between students at baseline. “The Virginia Board of Education Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student-Athletes,” was adopted by the Virginia legislature January 13, 2011 as Senate Bill 652. This legislation was proposed by Dr. Ralph Northam, a pediatric neurologist. While school divisions are under no requirement to enforce these policies, an Internet search clearly indicates that many school divisions around the country and in Southwest Va. have created specific pre- and post-concussion evaluation programs that are making RTP (return to play) after a concussion safer for our high school athletes. It All Began 50 Years Ago Although the 1960’s were full of uncertainties at Lewis-Gale, David G. Williamson, Jr., developed a master plan including creating a nonprofit, tax-exempt medical foundation to facilitate continuing medical education. With Dr. Richard H. Fisher as president, David Williamson as treasurer, they were joined by Dr. Richard M. Newton, Dr. Warren L. Moorman and Dr. F. Alton Wade. Attorney, Frank W. Rogers, Jr., officially incorporated Lewis-Gale Foundation on April 15, 1964. The original mission of providing medical education for health care professionals and the community, a repository for medical museum items and health career scholarships remains today. Along the way projects were added with support groups, school sports physicals, an annual run, community health lectures, CPR training, exercise classes and a variety of projects for patients and the community with art and music. In 1981 the Lewis-Gale Foundation expanded its operations in its new building at the Lewis-Gale campus with accumulated funds and a campaign chaired by Joseph C. Thomas, Sr. Ten years ago Health Focus moved to Brandon Avenue but is now located at Lewis Gale Pavilion courtesy of Lewis Gale Medical Center where all programs continue. The accomplishments have been many including over $3 million in scholarships, over 20 years of school sports physicals, 40 years for the run in 2014 and thousands helped through support groups especially 12 step programs. Moving forward free health information resources will be available to everyone on the new web site beginning December 2013 with medical journal articles, links to national medical libraries, disease specific organizations and many other health and preventive medicine resources. Today Health Focus of Southwest Virginia continues as a community charity dedicated to the promotion of health, health education and the preservation of medical history.

It All Began 50 Years Ago

Although the 1960’s were full of uncertainties at Lewis-Gale, David G.

We RememberRobert F. Bondurant, M.D. died 8/14/13 at 94 and Joseph C. Thomas, Sr. died 9/14/13 at 91. Both served Health Focus, Lewis-Gale Foundation, as presidents and on the board.

Bob Bondurant promoted the ongoing Whitman Lecture series and encouraged fellow clinic physicians to support the organization’s efforts. He was a physician and medical director of Lewis-Gale Clinic.

Joe Thomas headed the successful capital campaign in 1979 resulting in the Lewis-Gale Foundation building now known as the Education Center at Lewis Gale. He served on the board 29 years and was instrumental in establishing the Salem Rotary Scholarship Endowment Fund for Health Focus health career scholarships.

We are indebted to these fine gentlemen for their service and significant contributions.

Sports PhysicalsSaturday, May 18, 2013 students from local and surrounding area schools participated in the Annual Middle & High School Sports Physicals. Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses and non-medical volunteers, some who have participated for years, gave of their time to assist with the physicals. Jefferson College of Health Sciences provided physical therapy and occupational therapy students to conduct range of motion, flexibility and strength testing. For the first time, we provided Baseline Concussion Assessment with the assistance of Jefferson College of Health Sciences and Amy Foutz of University Physical Therapy. This procedure establishes Baseline for use if concussion occurs in the future and screen for residual effects of a prior concussion. After assessing the baseline pre-concussion scores, for any student with abnormal scores, their school coach and athletic director were advised of recommended procedures and follow-up testing.

Thanks to all of our volunteers, Butch Tyree, Athletic Director, Frank Dent, Principal at Northside High School, Ricky LaPrad, Athletic Trainer and students for supporting this event.

2014 physicals are schedule for Saturday, May 17th at Northside High School.

The weather was perfect Saturday, August 10th, for running, walking and kids events. Over 275 participated in the 5k and 10k run for the scholarship program and the 3 mile walk in support of the Oral Cancer Foundation.

Special friend and guest Michael Wardian joined us again this year. Michael is known for running in a vast number of marathons and ultra distance events. In 2013 he placed first in two 100k runs and second in a third one. He’s also a two time Olympic trial qualifier. Always motivated by a challenge, Michael thrives to be his best whether training or running a race. He offers encouragement and guidance to runners and they in turn appreciate his support. Michael is a graduate of Michigan State University, where he played on the lacrosse team not running competitively until after college. Married and living in Arlington, Virginia with his two boys, he is a vegetarian and works as an international shipbroker.

39th Annual Health Focus of Southwest Virginia Salem Distance Run

Thank you to our loyal sponsors: WSLS Channel 10, Lewis Gale Regional Health System, Hampton Inn Salem, Mamma Maria’s, The Skate Center, Green Up Lawns & Landscaping, the Salem Phone Directory and Virginia Tech Athletic Department.

Join us for our 40th Annual Run August 9, 2014.

Scholarship Program Receives New GrantFor the 2013 - 2014 academic year, $175,000 will be awarded to health career students primarily in Southwest Virginia. The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation has been a huge benefactor since 1966 with well over $2 million in grants. As they refocus their efforts, their grant is being phased out.

It is very exciting to announce that the Lewis-Gale Nursing Alumni Association will contribute $50,000 in memory of Barbara Fralin Edwards for Health Focus spring 2014 awards. We are very grateful for this gift to assist students pursuing any health career. The nurses have contributed for many years to an annual scholarship but will now help change the lives of many more students. The nurses have also indicated there will be additional grants in the future. What a wonderful 50th birthday gift to Health Focus!
