Glen Haven: One of Lake Michigan’s best destination beaches is located in this historic ghost town in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Park yourself on the sandy shoreline just past the Cannery Boat Museum; from the beach, you can spot the Manitou Islands and see the weathered pilings that remain from the once-thriving town’s shipping dock. Leland: If long walks on the beach are your thing, step away from the sum-mer crowds in Leland’s Fishtown and head to North Beach, where you can walk the sandy shoreline for miles. A favorite spot for rock pickers (Petoskey and locally prized Leland Blue stones can be found here), this spot is also ideal for catching a gorgeous Lake Michigan sunset. Follow North Street west toward the lake, where you’ll find a short trail to the beach.

Suttons Bay: The east-facing waters of West Grand Traverse Bay at Suttons Bay’s Marina Park are warm and shallow, making this a perfect spot to bring young kids. There’s a playground, picnic tables and grills, too; find all the summer essentials, like ice cream and fudge, plus shops and restaurants (most of which are casual enough for your post-beach flip-flops) in the walk-able downtown. Find it on Front Street just off the downtown.

Omena: There’s a gem of a beach on Omena Bay’s covelike shoreline, just past the point where M22 doglegs in this teensy town. Find picnic fixin’s just a few steps away at the authentically old-timey Omena Bay General Store, then settle in for a lazy day of swimming, snacking and watching boats sail serenely in and out of the harbor. On Omena Point Road just beyond M22.

Empire: Empire’s in-town beach straddles a thin strip of land between Lake Michigan and South Bar Lake, meaning there’s more than one spot to

get your swim on. The Lake Michigan side boasts striking bluff views and a wide beach perfect for staging stand-up paddleboard gear, while South Bar offers warmer water and respite from the elements. Grills, restrooms, a playground, and picnic tables, too. Located at the end of Niagara Street.

The crown jewel of Leelanau County is undoubtedly Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, home to 35 miles of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline, dozens of sugar-sand beaches, hiking trails, abundant native species, and preserved historic sites from the region’s farming and lumbering past. Michiganders have long known what a treasure Sleeping Bear is, but the rest of the country finally caught up with us just a few summers ago, when Good Morning America viewers voted it “Most Beautiful Place in America.”

There’s much to experience here, so we recommend starting at the park’s Phillip A. Hart Visitor Center at the corner of M22 and M72 in Empire, where you can find trail maps, guidebooks and other trip planning essentials. Some perennial favorites: Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a leisurely seven-mile driving route that includes access to gorgeous overlooks, picnic spots and trailheads; Empire Bluff and Pyramid Point hiking trails for great photo-ops (though there are dozens of other hikes worth checking out, including the recently finished five-mile “Dune Climb to Glen Arbor” trail); the Platte and Crystal Rivers for kayaking, canoeing or tubing; the Crystal River for casting a line (come spring, the steelhead are prolific); the centennial farmsteads of historic Port Oneida (pictured left) ; and, of course, the iconic Dune Climb, without which no trip to Sleeping Bear is really complete.

If you’re looking to stay overnight in the park, D.H. Day and Platte River campgrounds host a family friendly mix of modern, rustic and group sites. But Sleeping Bear also encompasses two islands, North and South Manitou, which are about 12 miles off the mainland and offer true backcountry camping in addition to ghost towns, ancient cedar stands, historic lighthouses, inland lakes, and glori-ous untouched dunes. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: In the historic town of Glen Haven find old-fashioned treats and toys at the general store, a working blacksmith shop next door, and a wooden boat museum housed in a defunct cherry cannery. Off M109, south of Glen Arbor. Just down the road (left at Lake Michigan) at the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum catch a live reenactment of a shipwreck rescue (in which Raggedy Ann & Andy play the part of the rescued) every summer day at 3 p.m. North of Glen Arbor off M22, more than a dozen 19th-century subsistence farmsteads comprise Port Oneida Rural Historic District—the nation’s largest historic agricultural community, forever preserved. Fishtown Museum: A wonderful collection of photographs and memorabilia cel-ebrating the diverse cultures and colorful past of this historic fishing village. EmpireThis laid-back beach town is the southern gateway to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Favorite stops include Joe’s Friendly Tavern, a neighborhood watering hole with home-brewed root beer and an impressive vegetarian menu, and Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates, considered among the best chocolatiers in the country. The downtown beach is stunning.

Glen Arbor A true resort town with a front row seat for sun-sets over Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Bay. Come summer, the downtown is a lively scene, with galleries, boutiques, souvenir shops and beaches drawing vacationers and locals alike. A few icons: The Cottage Bookshop, housed in a log cabin; all-things-cherry purveyor Cherry Republic; and Art’s Tavern, a local hangout since 1934.

LelandOnce the site of a bustling 19th-century Lake Michigan fishing village, Leland’s historic cedar-shake fishing shan-ties have been preserved and repurposed into tourist shops, boutiques and eateries. Two Leland must-do’s: A pretzel-bread sandwich at the Village Cheese Shanty, and a “Chubby Mary” (a bloody Mary with a smoked chub tucked in) at The Cove.

CedarThis little burg in the heart of Leelanau is best known for its lively annual Polka Festival, held July 3 through 6 this year. But it’s worth a detour on any Leelanau trip to explore the cute shops and to stock your cooler: There’s sausages at the renowned Pleva’s Meat Market, and smoked meats (the mini-ham!) at Bunting’s Cedar Market.

Maple CityA tiny, scenic town that got its start as a shoe-peg factory set on a swath of maple timber. Its original name, “Pegtown Station,” lives on at the Pegtown Station restaurant, home to some of the best pizza around. You’ll also find great smoked meats here at Gabe’s Country Market.

NorthportPerched at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, Northport was one of the region’s earliest settlements. It’s now

home to antiques shops, art galleries, cafes and other delights. Stroll the pier that surrounds the picturesque harbor before heading to one of the nearby beaches, which are never overrun.

OmenaThis teensy village at a bend in M22 has a million-dollar view of gorgeous Omena Bay, plus treasures like the historic Omena General Store, Tamarack Gallery and Leelanau Cellars’ stunning waterfront tasting room.

Lake LeelanauSitting on the Lake Leelanau narrows—the thin channel connecting the lake’s north and south lobes—this quiet town is home to some real treasures: a waterfront wine tasting room, an elegant Italian restaurant, the century-old Fountain Point resort, some of the region’s favorite wineries, Northern Latitudes Distillery (with tasting room!) and NJ’s, a grocery with a kitchen that churns out killer Indian take-out.
