Beaver Island is beloved for its expansive beaches, wild island forests and unbeatable seclusion—it is an island, after all, accessible only via a plane ride or two-hour ferry trip—but it was also the setting for an incredible chap-ter in Great Lakes history. In the mid-1800s, a renegade Mormon leader and self-anointed prophet named James Strang led 300 devotees to the island, where he ruled over his indepen-dent Mormon “kingdom” until his assassina-tion in 1856. Following Strang’s death, Irish

immigrants established a new enclave on the island; by the late 1800s, 95 percent of the islanders were Irish, and Gaelic was the com-mon language. (Of the 881 residents in 1880, there were 141 Gallaghers, 123 Boyles, and 90 O’Donnells.) Relics of both the Mormon and Irish communities still survive today: the Mormon colony’s former print shop is now a museum, and the island’s two Irish pubs are the only establishments open year-round. Of course, Beaver Island offers plenty more to make for a memorable trip, including a pair of historic lighthouses, charter fishing, rustic camping,

remote beaches, and a biological station run by Central Michigan University. Hiking the island’s extensive network of trails is a great way to check out the interior (trail maps are available at the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce; 26215 Main St., Beaver Island, 231.448.2505, beaverisland.org), but a day in a kayak will allow you to explore the shoreline, shipwrecks and many other smaller islands that make up the Beaver Island archipelago (find rentals and guided trips through Inland Seas School of Kayaking; 25860 Main St., Beaver Island, 231.448.2221, inlandseaskayaking.com).

Family Cruise: Stretching nearly 26 miles from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs, the coastline-hugging Little Traverse Wheelway (trailscouncil.org) makes exploring the region as easy as riding a bike. On your trip you’ll find more than a half-dozen roadside parks to take in a picnic lunch, and numerous beaches with direct access to the water. Mountain Bike: The well-groomed singletrack system at the Glacial Hills Pathway & Natural Area was developed with help from the Michigan Mountain Biking Association—so you know it’s gonna be good. A fun and beautiful ride for the intermediate to advanced set, with a nice mix of climbs

and descents, and very few rocks and roots. Twenty-eight miles of trail, with plans for future expansion in the works. Find the trailhead on Eckhardt Road, off Bellaire Highway, 2.5 miles west of Bellaire. 231.929.7911, GTRLC.ORG.

Road Bike: For serious road warriors, your ticket to one of the best rides in the region is simply to follow the eastern shore of beautiful Torch Lake, which, at 19 miles, ranks as Michigan’s longest inland lake. The curvy, tree-lined route along East Torch Lake Drive offers relatively flat terrain and intermittent pops of Torch’s bright blue waters. Just be ready to be a little assertive, as the shoulder is thin in places. Our suggestion: Start your ride in Alden on the southeast end of Torch, and bike 17 miles to Eastport at the top of the lake, where the beach at Barnes Park is a great place to spend the afternoon before heading back south. Early mornings and weekdays offer lowest traffic.


Jordan River Pathway: This rugged 18-mile trek threads through the scenic Jordan River Valley. Great destination for a weekend backpacking trip; stay overnight at the rustic, hike-in Piney Bridge Campground. Coy Mountain: This pretty 1.4-mile hike, hidden away from the foot traffic in downtown Alden, is worth seeking out. The 17-acre tract encompasses a 140-foot ridge forested with virgin hardwoods. From downtown Alden, follow Coy Street south for 1/3 mile; turn east on Valley Street. The preserve is two blocks in.

Sleepy Hollow Nature Preserve: A simple, mile-long trail circles through this pint-sized preserve, home to a lovely second-growth forest of maple, beech and ash, and a spring-fed trout stream that empties into Lake Charlevoix. FISHING SPOTSFrom fly fishing the world-class Jordan River to angling for big game fish in the deep waters of Torch Lake, this region is nothing short of a fish-erman’s paradise—even Ernest Hemingway, an iconic outdoorsman, cut his teeth angling the lakes and streams here. (“Absolutely the best trout fishing in the country,” he penned to a pal in 1919.) A favorite spot is Lake Charlevoix, with multiple arms sprawling out across 17,000 acres to varying depths (about 120 feet max in the main basin; just

shy of 60 feet max in the south arm) to support both warm- and cold-water fish. Smallmouth and walleye hunker down near the East Jordan launch in the South Arm; perch and steelhead can be found at the Ironton narrows; the steep drop-off near Young State Park is a haven for rainbow trout, brown trout and walleye; and warm water at the mouth of the Horton Creek tributary attracts northern pike in springtime and salmon in the fall.

The 75-mile-long Chain of Lakes is another epic angling destination. For trophy-worthy fish,

head to the lower chain’s big lakes, like Elk Lake, Torch Lake and Lake Skegemog, where you can try your luck for record-setting muskie—plus walleye, largemouth bass, northern pike and more. For panfish action, seek out the littler lakes of the Upper Chain, where warm water and weedy bottoms provide a rich habitat for crappie, perch, smallmouth bass and bluegill. Kids in tow? The fishing pier on Lake Ellsworth in Ellsworth Community Park is a pretty, peaceful spot to drop a line.

Torch Lake Township: Despite being Michigan’s second-largest inland lake—and one of the state’s loveliest at that—Torch doesn’t offer many public access sites. But if you’re looking to dip your toes into these gorgeous waters, the pretty little beach at William K. Good Day Park in Torch Lake Township is the place to be, with pavilions, picnic tables, restrooms, a pier and swimming area. Alden: Sidled up to the Torch Lake waterfront, adjacent to the pier in downtown Alden, you’ll find what’s really just the barest sliver of beach.
