For years, it seemed, the Great Lakes gem named Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was one of the country’s best-kept secrets—then in 2011, viewers of Good Morning America voted the national park Most Beautiful Place in America, and the following summer Sleeping Bear saw a record 1.5 mil-lion visitors. But there’s still plenty of space to find solitude, quiet and untouched beauty because this national treasure on Michigan’s western shore encompasses 71,000 acres of parkland and 35 miles of glorious Lake Michigan coastline. You’ll find much of that uncrowded terrain in the less-traveled south-ern portions of the park, which sprawl out along the Benzie County coast.

With so much white-sand shoreline and Sleeping Bear’s dramatic dunes and bluffs, the park’s Benzie beaches are abso-lutely sublime. Two popular spots are Platte Point Beach, where the Platte River meets Lake Michigan, and Esch Road Beach, at the mouth of Otter Creek, which has a hidden-lagoon feel. For more seclusion, try Peterson Road Beach, offering dramatic shoreline views at the park’s southern tip.

Sleeping Bear is also a day-hiker’s heav-en: challenge yourself on the lovely Platte Plains Trail, which includes a series of loops ranging from four miles to 15 miles, or, for something easier, try the Old Indian Trail, which dishes up a gorgeous Lake Michigan

overlook from either of its 2.5-mile loops. Other favorite Sleeping Bear activities include canoeing or tubing the picturesque Platte River (find rentals at The Honor Trading Post, 8294 DEADSTREAM RD., HONOR,

Sleeping Bear Dunes: Heaven for hikers, with 100-some miles of designated trails through uniquely beautiful terrain: woods, wetlands, mead-ows, shoreline, sand dunes. Our personal pick for Benzie County is the Platte Plains Trail, a mostly flat 14.7-mile network of smaller loops through pine-oak-aspen woods, open fields and pine plantations, with occasional views of Lake Michigan. Within this system, the 3.5-mile Bass Lake Loop is an easy wooded hike that meanders along Bass Lake’s western edge; 4.6 mile Otter Creek Loop is another favorite, starting on the shores of Lake Michigan and wending along Otter Creek and Otter Lake for great wildlife watching. Michigan Legacy Art Park: Art meets earth at this wooded 30-acre preserve, featuring a gentle 1.6-mile trail interspersed with 43 sculptures and a rustic outdoor amphitheater for unplugged concerts. Great spot to bring kids (they love the fort sculpture). At Crystal Mountain Resort. 12500 CRYSTAL

Big M Trail: Developed in the 1950s as one of the nation’s first great Nordic trail systems, this 50-mile trail also makes for beautiful hiking. The well-marked path is comprised of loops running through the rustic and wild Huron-Manistee National Forest; sections like the Lumberjack and Corkpine are easier, while Catamount and Sky Pilot are hillier and more challenging. Located 18 miles east of Manistee and seven miles west of Wellston; find the trailhead 3.5 miles south of M55 on Udell Hills Road. FS.USDA.GOV/HMNF.

Manistee River Trail: This nearly nine-mile trail skirts the east shore of the Manistee River, past wetlands, over bridges, and through scenic rolling

hills. Treasures here include observation platforms for enjoying the view, and the largest wooden suspension bridge in Lower Michigan, at the site where the trail hooks up with the legendary North Country Trail. Find trailheads at Seaton Creek or Red Bridge campgrounds. 231.723.2211.

Arcadia Dunes: More than 15 miles of trail carve through dunes and forests, and past adjacent working farms at this stunning preserve. Check out Pete’s Woods Trail for fantastic wildflower viewing, or the Baldy Trails for breathtaking Lake Michigan views. Wonderful spot for bird watching. Ludington State Park: The trails at this 5,300-acre park wind through a variety of landscapes, from grassy dunes to woods to alongside rivers and lakes. The half-mile-long Skyline Trail, which runs over a board-walk to a beautiful Lake Michigan view, is great for families; the three-mile-long Logging Trail is shaded, making it ideal for hot summer days. First Street Beach, Manistee: There’s plenty of parking at this lovely Lake Michigan swimming spot, but our favorite way to get there is by strolling Manistee’s Riverwalk, a mile-long boardwalk that meanders along the Manistee River through downtown, ending at the beach. The beach itself is a dreamy slice of sand, with a concession stand, volleyball and tennis courts, and a half-acre fenced-in dog park where you can let Fido roam leash-free. Access the Riverwalk (and find parking) at Memorial Park. Located at the west end of First Street, on Lake Michigan. VISITMAN-

Crystal Lake Beach, Beulah: This public beach right in downtown Beulah is one of the best in-town beaches around. Located on the shores of the exceptionally clear, sand-bottomed Crystal Lake, the beach is nestled right where the lake meets the mouth of Cold Creek, allowing all kinds of swimming and water fun. (Bonus for fami-lies: The swimming area is safely marked.) In addition to several hundred feet of sandy beachfront, there’s also a beach house, tennis courts and a playground. Elberta Beach, Lake Michigan:Wedged between the big lake and a gigan-tic dune ridge, the beach here seems to get wilder waves, making it a thrilling spot for a swim (and popular among body surfers and wave jumpers). Compared to the Lake Michigan beach in nearby Frankfort, it’s rarely crowded here; high bluffs lend an additional feeling of privacy. VISITBENZIE.COM.

Frankfort Lake Michigan Beach:A favorite for beach-goers, this sandy oasis dishes up incredible views of dunes both south and north. Take a post-swim stroll along the pier toward the breakwater lighthouse, or meander your way into Frankfort’s adorable downtown, just a stone’s throw away. VISITBENZIE.COM.

Point Betsie Beach: This iconic beach is beloved by locals for many reasons, not the least of which being that it’s home to the beautiful Point Betsie Lighthouse—one of the most photographed lighthouses in the Midwest. The point is also a great spot to hunt for Petoskey stones, and the onshore winds make it an epic spot for kiteboarding. POINTBETSIE.ORG.

Charles Mears State Park: This 50-acre space on Lake Michigan is not far from downtown Pentwater, and it includes a

beautiful swath of fine white sand adjacent to the harbor pier; swim and sun here by day, and come back for the knockout sunsets at night. Ludington State Park: This stunner of a state park is home to two beautiful beaches. The sugar-sand Lake Michigan beach stretches for nearly seven miles, and is a wonderful spot to catch a sun-set; Hamlin Lake Beach offers calmer, warmer waters, and includes a picnic shelter, restroom, playground and a con-cession stand where you can rent a pad-dleboat or canoe for noodling around in the water. The waters off the coast of Manistee and Benzie counties are renowned for being among the most productive fisheries anywhere on Lake Michigan, boasting heavyweight trout, steel-head, Coho and Chinook salmon. (The Platte River, in Benzie County, was actually the first place salmon were planted in Michigan, in 1966.) No surprise, then, that charter fishing outfits are numerous in port towns up and down the coast, as well as inland, where the region’s crystal-clear rivers and streams offer big rewards (the state record brown trout, at 41 pounds, was caught in the Manistee River; the state record walleye was caught nearby, at the mouth of the Pine). Frankfort North Breakwater Lighthouse: While the tower itself, part of which dates back to 1912, is not open to the public for tours, you can still stroll the light’s 500-foot-long pier to watch the sunset and gaze upon this Frankfort icon. Manistee North Pierhead Light: An 1872-built cast-iron icon of the “Victorian Port City,” with a pretty catwalk (one of only a few remaining in Michigan) and a long pier that many people love to walk along at sunset. Big Sable Point Lighthouse: This black-and-white striped lighthouse, dating to 1857, is a much-photographed Ludington landmark. Climb the steep spiral staircase to the top of the light; explore the former keeper’s quarters, now a gift shop. Open daily from May 1 through October 31. Follow US10 west as it turns into Ludington Avenue, turn right onto M116 and drive north up to the Ludington State Park. Walk 1.8 miles to reach the lighthouse. SPLKA.ORG.

Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse: Built in 1924, this striking lighthouse was built with an unusual shape to deflect the strong waves of Lake Michigan. Located at the end of a half-mile-long pier at Stearns Park Beach in Ludington; open to the public for tours from May 24 to September 2. Follow US10 west as it turns into Ludington Avenue, turn right onto M116, go four blocks, then turn left into Stearns Park. Go to the end of the park, then walk the breakwall out to the lighthouse. Platte River: The shallow, crystal-clear Platte sets the scene for a gorgeous canoe trip, weaving through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore before ending at a Lake Michigan beach. The lower Platte has a gentle current, making it ideal for family canoe or tubing trips; the upper Platte, meanwhile, is a swifter trip built for more experienced paddlers. Beulah: Situated on the shores of Crystal Lake, Beulah is quintessen-tial Up North, with galleries, shops, and cozy eateries. This four-season paradise offers plenty of outdoor activities; tubing or canoeing the Platte River is a favorite. Excellent fishing, too.Don’t miss: Beulah Art Fair, July 6Peruse work by dozens of local artists at this low-key fest in the town’s lake-front park.

Elberta: Situated between beautiful Betsie Bay and a stunning Lake Michigan bluff, Elberta dishes up one of the region’s best in-town beach-es, plus a handful of eclectic shops and eateries. Don’t miss: Solstice Festival, June 21Celebrate the longest day of the year with live entertainment, kids’ activities, and wine, beer and food from local vendors.

Frankfort: Pretty port town with a bustling marina, lovely city beach, and the kind of downtown that invites leisurely lingering at shops and cafes. Home to two historic lighthouses, including the beloved Point Betsie.Don’t miss: Frankfort Art Fair, Aug. 15 & 16This event celebrates its 38th year this summer. Held in Market Square Park.

Honor: A sweet, sleepy hamlet home to a classic drive-in movie theater, mom-and-pop style lodging, and the legendary fishing waters of the Platte River, where the state’s first salmon were planted in 1966. Don’t miss: Honor Coho Salmon Festival

Ludington: Bordered by beautiful Lake Michigan coastline and Pere Marquette Lake, this beach town is home to romantic Victorian B&Bs, two

historic lighthouses, and of course, gorgeous Ludington State Park, one of the state’s best.Don’t miss: Suds on the Shore Craft Beer & Michigan Wine Festival, Aug. 16Live music, homebrewing demos, and more than 40 vendors sampling beer and wine from around the state. Proceeds benefit United Way of Mason County.

Manistee: A lumber-era boom town and former Odawa Indian settle-ment, nestled where the Manistee River meets Lake Michigan. Golden beaches, Victorian-era architecture, and an elegant, strollable downtown. Don’t miss: Manistee National Forest Festival, July 2–6This historic fest, which began in 1936, celebrates the woods and water of Manistee. Parade, juried art show, fireworks and much more. Sleighbell Festival, December 4–7Weekend fest with renowned parade that includes horse team pulling 40-foot-tall standing Christmas tree. Many activities with Victorian spirit.

Onekema: The gateway community to scenic highway M22, this lit-tle village is perched between Lake Michigan and Portage Lake, making it a dream destination for outdoor recreation. Find an ice cream parlor, fruit markets, several eateries and gift shops in the laid-back downtown. Free concerts every Monday evening at Onekama Village Park, June 30 through Aug. 18. Don’t miss: Onekama Days, Aug. 1–4Parades, craft shows, fireworks, live music, pig roast, beer tasting, and other summer fest essentials.

Pentwater: This little Lake Michigan hamlet has a postcard-cute down-town, with historic gingerbread boutiques, art galleries, ice cream parlors, a picturesque marina, and plenty of beautiful beaches nearby.Don’t miss: Pentwater Homecoming, Aug. 14–17A family friendly fest, with a sandcastle contest, strawberry shortcake sale, softball tournament, and more.
