Yoga is as many different things to people as there are types of flowers. For some, it is a form of exercise and fitness whose followers are vehement in their attestations of it being

the best, most effective form of exercise and fitness. For others, it represents the truest form of preparation for meditation and resulting mental relaxation which provides the stillness of the mind required to de-stress and refortify the mind. And, for others, it is the most powerful tool to create self-realization of our connection with the Divine Source and Divine Self. Can it be all?

The Western appetite for yoga began more than 100 years ago in 1893 when Swami Vivekananda, a Yogi from India, wearing red silk robes and a saffron turban min-gled with the crowds at the World Exposition in Chicago. He came to give a speech to the religious congress, but the greatest gift he brought was a 5,000 year old sys-tem of spiritual discipline called yoga. Other Yogis came and went subsequent to this and many Americans trav-eled to India to study and write books, but it was not until October 1920 when a young Yoga Master named Paramhansa Yogananda presented a speech in Boston that yoga came to the U.S. to stay. Prior to his arrival he wrote, “I am going forth to discover America like Colum-bus. Columbus thought he had discovered India – surely there must be a karmic link between our two lands.” He set up permanent residence here touring and selling out lectures revealing the science of yoga. In 1925, he estab-lished an American headquarters in Los Angeles, where he stayed until his passing in 1952. continued on page 6 >>

More than 15 million Americans practice some form of yoga. It is hard to imagine when we had not heard of it.

What is Yoga? William J.D. Doran wrote in his article, The Eight Limbs, The Core of Yoga, “It is a practice of an art and science dedicated to creating union between body, mind, and spirit. Its objective is to assist the practitioner in using the breath and body to foster an awareness of ourselves as individualized beings intimately connected to the Unified Whole of Creation. In short, it is about making balance and creating equanimity so as to live in peace, good health and harmony with the greater whole….”

But, can it also help me lose weight? Can I do it for 20 minutes before I go to work? Too many of our Western minds may find this a lofty goal. Does it mean this must be the purposeful intent upon setting out to start a yoga practice or can we begin with baby steps and do it to get in shape and not insult the disciples?

The ancient texts written thousands of years ago found in the The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali describe the art of right living being perfected by the practices of the foun-dational philosophy of yoga which brings about peace, good health, and harmony with the greater whole by providing an 8-step blueprint for controlling the rest-lessness of the mind.

It would appear the practice of yoga is geared toward creating peace of mind which causally results in good physical health, but, more importantly, creating a con-

nection with the Divine. However, is it acceptable for someone to develop a yoga practice solely for the pur-pose of physical benefits and/or mental clarity without necessarily adding to it the intent of spiritual union? I think it’s like asking if it would be okay to go for a walk on treadmill for 30 minutes without training for a mar-athon. Of course, it is. If during the practice a deeper meaning develops, so be it.

If you want to develop a practice of yoga, here is some background, should you decide to take it deeper and go beyond wanting to tighten up your abs and glutes.

The yoga practiced here in the U.S. is mainly the practice of the physical postures called Asana. Asana is only one of the eight limbs of yoga practice which is derived from one of the four types, as outlined below.

Yoga is the cornerstone of Hinduism which addresses the fundamental elements of philosophy, mysticism, emotional, and actions (work). It was developed in the Indus Valley more than 5,000 years ago and began as a philosophy and means for Union or Yoking of the material and spiritual worlds with the traditional cross-legged meditation position as the only pose. It is first a systematic process of spiritual unfolding which teaches how to integrate and heal our existence as well as har-monize our consciousness with the Divine.

There are four ways or paths a yoga practitioner can take to reach enlightenment. The particular path cho-sen would depend upon the interests, temperament, and complex attitudes of the individual. While it is true we each have predispositions towards one or another of the four paths of yoga, we cannot avoid or abandon the others. The four paths are:

1. Karma-Yoga: The worker is called the Karma-Yogi. This is the path of action, service to others, mindful-ness, and remembering the levels of our being while fulfilling our actions or karma in the world. Nobody can live in a body without doing actions. Even a re-nunciate living in a Himalayan cave has to do action; therefore, some degree of Karma Yoga is essential.

2. Jnana-Yoga: One who seeks this Yoga through phi-losophy is called the Jnana-Yogi. It involves deep ex-ploration of the nature our being by systematically exploring and setting aside false identities. While Jnana Yoga deals with knowledge, wisdom, intro-spection and contemplation, everybody has a mind and at some point will need to examine it, wherein quiet reflection naturally comes.

3. Bhakti-Yoga: One who searches this union in love is

a Bhakti-Yogi. This is the path of devotion, emotion, love, compassion, and service to Spirit and others. All actions are done in the context of remembering the Divine. All people will experience emotions such as love, compassion, and devotion at points along the journey, regardless of which of the four paths of yoga is predominant.

4. Raja-Yoga: One who seeks this union through mys-ticism is called a Raja-Yogi. This is a comprehensive method that emphasizes meditation, while encom-passing the whole of yoga. It deals with the en-countering and transcending thoughts of the mind. Everybody who becomes still and quiet from spiri-tual practices will naturally encounter and deal with attractions and aversion, and will meditate, thus touching on Raja Yoga.

Swami Vivekananda has explained these four paths as follows: "To the worker, it is union between men and the whole of humanity; to the mystic, between his low-er and Higher Self; to the lover, union between himself and the God of love; and to the philosopher, it is union of all existence. This is what is meant by yoga."

Our modern practice of yoga in America comes from the path of Raja-Yoga. It is the science of physical and mental control with eight limbs which were compiled by the Sage Patanjali Maharishi in the Yoga Sutras in about 500 B.C. The eight limbs which are progressive steps or disciplines which purify the body and mind, ultimately leading the Yogi to enlightenment are:

1. Yamas: These restraints are the DONTs or moral ob-jectives aimed at destroying nature. They are non-vi-olence, truthfulness, moderation, non-stealing, and non-covetousness.

<< continued from page 5

Page 7: 2014 MAY/JUNE RADIANCE Magazine

TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS

Radiance May/June 2014 7

2. Niyamas: These observances are the DOs and aimed at the ethics of the Yogi which are purity, content-ment, austerity, study of sacred texts, and aware-ness of the Divine.

3. Asanas: The Postures

4. Pranayama: The control and regulation of the breath (Asanas and Pranayama form Hatha Yoga)

5. Pratyahara: Withdrawal of the senses in order to still the mind

6. Dharana: Concentration (only upon achieving this fully can the Yogi advance to steps 7 & 8)

7. Dhyana: Meditation, the state of pure thought and absorption, but there can still be duality here and only mastered can the Yogi advance to step 8.

8. Samadi: The super-conscious state where there is non-duality or oneness. This is the deepest, highest state of consciousness where body and mind have been transcended and the Yogi is one with the Self and the Divine.

There is some confusion about the four paths of yoga. The modern yoga class most often focuses on physical postures. By referring to postures classes as yoga class-es, one is left with the false impression this, unto itself, is the meaning of yoga. As shown above, the Asanas are just one aspect of the eight disciplines within the frame-work of Raja-Yoga. It is just one of four paths which make up the totality of a complete yoga practice.

Although Asanas are only a fraction of the totality, they are still a viable beginning of the practice of yoga. Mov-ing the body into postures has widespread benefits which include underlying health, strength, balance, and flexibility.

On a deeper level, the practice of Asana, which means staying or abiding in Sanskrit, is a useful tool to calm the mind and move into the inner essence of being. The chal-lenge of poses offers the practitioner the opportunity to explore and control aspects of their emotions, con-centration, intent, faith, and unity between the physical and the ethereal body. Using Asanas to challenge and open the physical body acts as a binding agent to bring one in harmony with the unseen elements of their be-ing, forces which shape our lives through our responses to the physical world. Asana then becomes a way of exploring our mental attitudes and strengthening our will as we learn to release and move into the state of grace which comes from creating balance between our material world and a spiritual experience. Through the practice of Asanas, we can expand into the remaining Seven Limbs of Raja-Yoga and through that explore

and expand into the remaining three paths which are the full dimensions of yoga. The practitioner does not need to set out to conquer the mountain, but rather set intent to put one foot in front of the other. Wherever your yoga journey takes you will be perfect for you.

Yogis have been touting and sharing the benefits of a consistent yoga practice for thousands of years. Mod-ern science now has confirmed much of what yoga practitioners have always known. The benefits are yoga span a range from physical, mental, emotional, and/or deeply spiritual. Some benefits have been confirmed by scientific study while others remain purely anecdotal and are only confirmed by those who constantly prac-tice and experience the benefits of yoga.

Where do you go from here?

Choose one of the styles of postures from Ashtanga, Vin-yasa, Power Yoga, Jivamukti, Kali Ray TriYoga, White Lo-tus, Iyengar, Integrative, Restorative, Viniyoga, Bikram, Hatha, Svaroopa, Sivanda, Integral, Ananda, Kundalini, Ishta, Kripalu, Anusara, Tibetan……just to name a few! As we move into the fifth month of our calendar year, all of Nature seems to be taking off its spandex and bursting into the joy of freedom. The Number Five exudes this energy no matter

where it appears in a personal chart.

Many reading this article may be too young to remem-ber the erratic energy of a Mexican Jumping Bean. This fun capsule jumped around in the palm of one's hand in response to heat. Never staying in one position too long, this bean moves in all directions. Those born on the 5th, 14th and 23rd of any month enjoy this same quick, resourceful, and versatile reputation.

Unique, unconventional, and a seeker of the latest and greatest, Number Five individuals could easily wander off to far-away land – mentally or physically – to find the answers to life. They also love change, travel, variety, and, above all, personal freedoms.

Life is not dull for companions of the Number Five. Their marriage mate must understand their mate's need for an unrestricted lifestyle and dislike for handling respon-sibility. Number Five has difficulty committing to any-thing, because it does not trust itself. The subconscious knows its motto: "Don't fence me in." The structure of married life seems like a big fence. Paradoxically, the thing the Number Five needs is structure. It isn't unusual for a Number Five to enlist in the military or marry early.

These people are verbal and mentally high-strung, choosing to live on their nerves and create adventures which satisfy their craving for excitement. With a genu-ine dislike for hard manual labor, occupations that uti-lize quick-paced and mental dexterity suit them best.

Patience in thought, word, and deed is not Number Five's strong point! This is not to say that Number Five is couch potato. As long as the experience has excite-ment, challenges, or adventure, Number Five uses pa-tient perseverance to accomplish it.

The five energies of the senses vibrate to the Number Five personality. Therefore, sports, exercise, and sex play a big part in their lives.

The Magical World of Numbers:The Explosive Month of MayBy Elizabeth Summers

This spirited experimenter and thrill seeker must be on guard against over-indulgence in drugs, sexual affairs, and gambling especially. Gambling plays to their love of risk-taking.

When the Number Five is in play in a personal transit chart, major changes abound, such as changes in loca-tion, lifestyle, career, even partners. Modifications in lifestyle can be involuntary, presenting uncertainty as to what to do next! Expressed as the Hierophant Card in Tarot, the inner teacher will guide the Number Five, if it will only listen and follow through.

Mercury, the planet of communication, rules over this loquacious energy. Talking, selling, teaching, traveling, exploring, and bubbling over with excitement allows everyone and everything to remain totally energized.

To hold life loosely, patiently allow life to unfold, and live in moderation are key lessons the energy of Num-ber Five needs to learn.

Open to life, with a willingness to try almost anything, this bundle of energy called Number Five, learns its les-sons through experiencing them, choosing not to fol-low advice from wiser wisdom givers. Thus, many a mud puddle has been splashed around in by Number Fives. However, their wonderful elasticity of character allows them to rebound quickly from the heaviest blows. Noth-ing seems to affect them for very long.

This mercurial Number Five, with its disdain for the mo-notonous, thrives under stress and in crisis conditions. It adapts to sudden changes while remaining centered in the moment. Lucky days are Wednesdays and Fridays.

Numerologist Elizabeth Summers is adept at combining Numerology, Astrology, and the ancient Chaldean Numerology codes with the Kabbalah interpretations of the Tarot. She adds depth of interpretation to her readings. Decoding an individual's temperament and personality, their

Science has discovered at the quantum level (the smallest level), everything is made of energy; our thoughts

affect matter and consciousness creates our reality. If, at the core of our physical world, everything is made of this energy, there is nothing fundamentally solid about anything.

“Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real.”

—Niels Bohr, (1885–1962), Noble Prize-winning physicist

Is there evidence this is true? And, if there is, how can we use that infor-mation to change and improve our lives?

If you explore what physicists have discovered through the double-slit experiment or read what twenti-eth-century physicists like Schro-dinger and Heisenberg have writ-ten about consciousness, you’ll see how there is scientific evidence our thoughts create reality. These No-bel Prize-winning physicists saw a connection between consciousness and reality. Heisenberg is consid-

ered to have been an advocate of philosophical idealism. The idealist view holds that nothing has an in-dependent, real essence outside of consciousness, objects we perceive are identical with the ideas we have about them, and intelligent life de-fines reality. This is a profound con-cept – one that could be and is radi-cally changing our world view and many people’s lives.

This is one of the most amazing ways I’ve discovered for myself that this is all true. In a spoon-bending class, we were taught by an aero-space engineer that matter is made of energy; that nothing is really sol-id – unless or until we believe and perceive it as solid.

Following Heisenberg’s directions, I gently held a spoon by two fingers at the very tip of the bowl and two fingers at the bottom tip of the han-dle. He instructed us to imagine the spoon becoming liquid. I became quiet and envisioned that image in my mind. Within moments, and using the power of my mind to in-tensely focus on the belief it was possible and the spoon was liquid, I actually felt the spoon turn into a gel-like liquid. I quickly bent the bowl of this previously very rigid, sterling silver spoon.

The instant I realized I was damag-ing the spoon, it froze in my hands. This was one of strangest sensa-tions I ever experienced. One min-ute the item was solid, then it was a

Spoon Bending:Evidence that Matter is Not SolidBy Pamala Oslie

gel-like liquid, then it was a twisted solid—right in my hand.

In two other experiments, he told us to envision our spoons just bend-ing over – which, after taking some time to shift my belief about what was possible, was exactly what happened. There were no tricks involved. I didn’t rub the spoon handle until it became hot enough to bend or bend the spoon forcibly under the table as some critics like to claim in their attempt to debunk this ability. I bent spoons with the power of my consciousness.

This experience once again proved to me that physical reality is not what we believe it is. If this is pos-sible, what else can we do that we have yet to uncover? What are the limits to our consciousness and our natural abilities?

Navigating Your Future:Thoughts from The Wisdom Keepers to Help You Minimize Obstacles & Maximize Opportunities in This Brave New WorldBy George Cappannelli

We are in a time unlike any before. We face challenges in climate change, energy, education, health care, immigration, and inequality to name

a few. We are in a demographic revolution which will over the next decades result in 50% of North America's population and other industrialized countries being over 50 for the first time in history. Increasing longevity, decreasing birth rates, and a shrinking tax base are some startling implications this demographic revolution will have for the billions globally who are older GenXers, Boomers, and Elders.

Having failed to do a stellar job addressing critical chal-lenges, many in our governments, institutions, busi-nesses and general public are behind the curve on this issue as well. We are uninformed on and unprepared for the consequences and opportunities which lie ahead.

Part of the problem is as a species we've never been in this situation before. We have no blueprint or script which describes what we should do with this additional time. There must be a purpose in the grand design other than retirement, something of genuine consequence which capitalizes on our wisdom and experience which requires the presence of such large number of elders on the planet.

One thing is clear. Those 50 and older have come to the end of the territory described in Acts One (Youth) and Two (Maturity) of the Human Drama and must address

the question of how to write a new Third Age (Aging).

This question prompted me to contact colleagues who are among the leading women authors and experts and members of AgeNation World Council of Wisdom Keep-ers. I asked them to share thoughts and recommenda-tions which can help us write the Third Act and better navigate the future. Following is what they said:

Joan Borysenko, Best Selling Author and Expert on Spirituality and Health"The world has bottomed out. The statistics are dreary. Some of our best scientists are feeling we don't have time to save ourselves. However, there's the alternate point of view. Unusual things happen all the time. The Berlin Wall fell. Smoking diminished significantly in a our country. We've made gains in gender equality and hu-man rights. We're more aware of the need to protect our habitat and lead healthier, more conscious lives.

"We are in crisis, but it's a turning point. Although some may think we're at the end, when people of good hearts support one another, what can happen is a rite of pas-sage. And what happens in the space between where the world breaks down and reforms, between no lon-ger and not yet, a new way can emerge. We can get out of the rut and make miracles.

"The Buddhists and the Hindus have a word for getting stuck in ruts. They call these sanskaras, habit patterns of thought formed by repetition. Knowing about brain plasticity and how we can make new neural connec-

tions, those who want to better navigate the future can get out of the ruts by changing our attitudes. Major growth often occurs during times of unwanted chang-es. It's time to flow in a different way, to look for and find new meaning, to make as Viktor Frankl advised us, “a new meaning out of suffering and challenge.” It’s not the end of the world. It's a new age!"

ConnieBuffalo,PresidentofRenaissanceInterna-tional,MemberofTheChippewaTribe"As with many cultural beliefs, there is a marked differ-ence between the identity of an elder in my Chippewa tradition and that of the elder of the Western world.

"From earliest childhood, the Chippewa learn elders are those we are most grateful to and deserve the deepest respect. Elders enchant our imagination; the stars shin-ing in the black velvet sky, the towering trees, rocking in the wind, the oceans who carry the songs of the many who walk on, and the grandparents who are first to be served and honored in the tribe.

"The elder gathers the gifts of a lifetime and takes care of us even as we take care of him or her. Once a person crosses 50, he or she lives for the next generation.

"Passing on wisdom and insights is part of the respon-sibility of the elder, but not all. It also includes knowing one is a sacred being living in a sacred world. It's differ-ent from the Western concept of "retiring," this aware-ness invites the experience of the elder to be respected and put into action for as long as possible.

"Instead of hoping others recognize their ongoing val-ue, our elders honor their potency, sacredness, rights, and responsibilities. They use this understanding to be-come a humble light which shines his or her brilliance across the ages. For the Chippewa, who we believe our-selves to be influences how we expect others to treat us and our relationship to the world around us."

SedenaCappannelli,Author,CoFounderofAgeNa-tionandoftheWorldCouncilofWisdomKeepers"In our book, Do Not Go Quietly, George and I speak of living consciously and aging wisely. We believe both are essential to better navigate these challenging times and better prepare for the remarkable world ahead. This is a time for tremendous optimism. Our challenges give us a clear sign the old and no-longer-valuable are breaking down to make way for the new.

"We can do some of the following to live lives of greater stability as this falling away occurs:

• Be true to our dreams, the dreams we have come to

manifest.

• Be open to learning from our stumbles and celebrat-ing our breakthroughs.

• Commit to a deeper level of healing in our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual lives.

• Step fully into our lives with genuine compassion for ourselves and others.

• Look beyond physical accomplishments, posses-sions, or wealth as the measure of our success, and instead to the quality of our character, our experi-ence, and discernment. Turn them into the gold of wisdom.

"To be successful, be guided as by our hearts and our heads so we might better align our thoughts, words, and actions with a more elevated consciousness."

Barbara Marx Hubbard, Author, Visionary, Social InnovatorandTheVoiceofConsciousEvolution"We are going through a phase of evolutionary meta-morphosis on planet Earth. Our past life is not sustain-able. The planetary timing is moving toward the next phase of evolution, devolution, or extinction.

"Millions are attempting to evolve themselves and our culture toward an amorphous undefined society which we have never seen. We might call it a Co-creative Soci-ety in which each person is free to be and do his or her best within the evolving whole.

"During this process, many people are gaining access to higher frequencies of consciousness which need to be integrated with all levels of our self. One of the keys to success in this integration involves putting purpose first. The key is to yearn with all the passion of your be-ing for your evolution, beyond the separated state. This does not mean there is nothing else in your life or you become isolated. No, it means you keep your attention on the highest frequency of your being and, to what-ever degree possible, bring your Whole Being into har-mony with that frequency. A second key is to be com-passionate with yourself. You are taking a monumental leap here and helping evolving our species."

Dr. Jean Houston, Author, Scholar, Philosopher, Teacher, Visionary Leader"We are living in the most unique time. Other times in history thought they were unique, but they were wrong. This is it.

Often our everyday experience is not sufficient for the enormity of the challenges laid upon in this remarkable

of times. Many people have lost belief in our economic, health care, or educational systems. The old ways of doing things no longer work. We are seeking the emer-gence of the deeper story, our mythic lives.

"Do you feel the passion within, urging you to live your greater story? Myth is about the making of the soul. It is the journey of the heroic soul as you travel from an out-moded existence to an amplified life. In times of break-down and breakthrough, which we're in right now, myths arise telling us of the new heroes and heroines, and of the noble journey we must take in search of the Possible Human both within ourselves and in others.

"How do we evoke this emergence? How do we inspire this possible, passionate human so we may not just sur-vive our time, but thrive, leaving a legacy of a new way of being for our children, our grandchildren, and the fu-ture? It is only when we have discovered this possibility that we go beyond our pessimism and create a world in which we make a difference. It is in working with myth in a creative manner we gain fresh perspectives on our life journey. Myth can take us beyond our ordinary, ha-bitual ways to the essence of what we are or can be."

The Heart of the MatterBy Jan Phillips

This is not my body, it is the temple of God; this is not my heart, it is the altar of God.—Hazrat Inayat Khan

Our heart is where winds from above meet fires from below, causing a combustion of original grace. From the beginning, it is the heart that leads. When the mother’s

heart sends a spark to certain cells in the fetus, they start a rhythmic beating and become the heart muscle. The pulsing creates an electrical field with north and south poles, like the polar field around the earth. These poles provide an orientation to the other cells which know to differentiate according to their distance and direction form the pulsing heart. Fingers become fingers, toes become toes, and so on. From heart to heart, life itself is passed along.

Our heart energy precedes us as we navigate through life, extending beyond us as an aura potent enough to affect those in our path. Producing two and a half watts of electrical energy at each pulse, at an amplitude 60 times greater than brain waves, the heart creates an electromagnetic field radiating up to 15 feet beyond our body. The magnetic component of the heart's field, which is around 5,000 times stronger than that pro-duced by the brain, is not impeded by tissues and can be measured several feet away from the body.

Research from the Institute of HeartMath (IHM) in Boul-der Creek, California, shows our heart's field changes distinctly as we experience different emotions, and it is registered by the brains of people near. On their website is an informal experiment with a boy and his dog dem-onstrating how one heart field can calm another heart down. IHM researchers monitored the heart rhythms of the dog and the boy, then had the dog enter a room by herself. Her heart rhythms were jagged and erratic.

Then Josh entered the room and greeted the dog, pet-ting her and emotionally bonding with her.

The dog's heart rhythms made a significant shift, syn-chronizing with Josh´s heart rhythms and staying close to his rhythms throughout their visit. When Josh left the room, the dog's heart rhythms shifted again, becoming spiked and jagged. Although the experiment was not formal, it appears Josh´s calm heart field connected with the dog's heart until she felt secure and relaxed.

That we have an effect on others is a matter of fact; the kind of effect we have on others is a matter of con-sciousness. We can radiate blessings and light or nega-tivity and darkness. Every occasion we have to be with people is an occasion to bless or blame. It is in our best interests to be mindful of our energy as we scatter it about, because, as A Course in Miracles reminds us, the cost of giving is receiving. Hence, it's wise counsel:

When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encoun-ter. As you see him, you will see yourself. As you treat him, you will treat yourself. As you think of him, you will think of yourself. Never forget this, for in him you will find yourself or lose yourself. The voice you hear in him is but your own. For what does he ask you? He is asking what will come to you. The answer I give my brother is for what I am asking. What I learn of him is what I learn about myself. We make no gains he does not make with us and we fall back if he does not advance.

When I was young, my mother assigned me a task from her chair at the sewing machine where she handed out morsels of wisdom. “Whenever you pass by someone, look in their eyes, give them a big smile, and say hello.”

Being shy and new to a big city, this seemed to me a frightening burden. “Mom, do I have to?” I asked plead-ingly, trying to get off this hook of responsibility.

Page 27: 2014 MAY/JUNE RADIANCE Magazine

TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS

Radiance May/June 2014 27

“You never know,” she said, “that person could be hav-ing a bad day. Your smile could make a big difference.”

I was never sure then if that was the case, but I did it, honoring her wishes, and now it’s a habit for which I’m grateful. When I smile and say, “Hello,” I am offering an unseen gift.

Recent magnetic images of actual heart energy show the energy arcing out from and curving back to the heart, forming a kind of doughnut-shaped torus. This is the electromagnetic (em) field which carries our energy outward as it brings in the whole spectrum of radio and light waves that our brain/body uses in its conception and perception of the world. As our heart is the center of this torus, so is our earth the center of such a torus, and so is our solar system, with the sun at its center as our heart is at our center.

In his book, The Biology of Transcendence, scholar and teacher Joseph Chilton Pearce presents the excit-ing probability our hearts are electromagnetically en-meshed with the universe's energy, which leads to a new meaning of “we are the world.” With every beat of our heart, the heavens may be coursing through us.

We seem to live in a nested hierarchy of energy sys-tems which extend from the miniscule atom to human to planet, solar system, and ultimately, galaxy. Because electromagnetic torus fields are holographic, it is proba-ble the sum total of our universe might be present with-in the frequency spectrum of any single torus. One im-plication of this is each of us centered within our heart torus is as much the center of the universe as any other creature or point, with equal access to all that exists.

We can access the universe through our hearts. We can feel our oneness with the earth as Meister Eckhart did when he wrote: “If I put my cheek against the earth’s body, I feel the pulse of God.” With open hearts, we “can see the world in a grain of sand,” as William Blake did. We can open up to the signals coming into our hearts through the fields in which they are nested, and respond to the future that is calling us forward. We can feel the Beloved like a fire within, as Rumi did, writing:The heart is your studentFor love is the only way we learnNight has no choice but to grab the feet of daylight. It’s as if I see your face everywhere I turn. It’s as if Love’s radiant oil never stops searching For a lamp in which to burn.

If we open the gates of our heart—risking everything, loving bravely, forgiving extravagantly—we can trans-form our lives, walk into each day knowing we are al-

ready loved, already healed, already part of the breath-taking Whole. We can feel the warmth of Love’s oil burning and cast its light from deep within. If we re-fused for a day to be numbed and defensive, to don our armor, to be silent and withholding, and we released what we could of our love for life, heaven would come pouring out with balm for our wounds and wine for our chalice.

When our hearts are closed, we feel lonely and alone, weakened and in danger, fearful, and faithless. We wait for love to find us. We wait for God to help us. We wait for life to knock on our door with the world in its hands, when all the while it’s in our hearts and in the hearts of everyone we see. We are like the apostle Philip who says to Jesus, “I do see you, but I want to see God.” And Jesus responds, “Whoever sees anything at all is look-ing into the eyes of the Only One Who Is.”

As much as God is in the temples, the churches, the mosques, God is in our hearts, awaiting birth through our gestures, our touches, our passionate embraces, our howls of delight, and our pregnant silences. We are the created ones who give birth to the Creator as the Creator gives birth to us. The story is ongoing, the myth still unfolding, the creation still occurring, every day, in us and through us.

There is a great need for you to embrace your role as an empowered creator of all which

happens in your world. To love every event, circumstance, and the world as a grand design of your greater being. A part of you is available and accessible to the conscious mind via Love and Compassion.

This is a call to all who have ears to hear …we are living during a time of the greatest opportunity in his-tory. Although some may wished to have lived during the time of Buddha, Christ, Rama, or Krishna and had the opportunity to meet these great masters, your love and compassion can bring you into their presence, if you choose.

You can learn and know the greater self and be the master you are and were meant to be. You have an op-portunity to know the higher self beyond a shadow of a doubt. You are among the greatest masters who have walked on this earth.

An army of heavenly hosts have as-sembled who are moving forward as you take the next step on the evolutionary path – full awaken-ing. You, if you choose, are about to fulfill the promise of the prayer “On earth as it is in heaven.” Gen-

erations have come before and repeated this prayer which is now being fulfilled. All you have to do is shift focus to your heart center and choose Love over anything else.

The only thing standing in the way is unforgiveness, a block of Love. An unforgiveness is any belief some-thing is not the way the Creator has meant it to be. This may appear as a wound from a past or current life. It may come from patterns of hurt or false images of the Self, such as the belief you are less than you are. It may come in a specific form re-leased in a common manor. Forgive yourself, dear one, for you know not what you've done.

There is a great opportunity to for-give the past and fully Love who you are on all levels and dimen-sions. You can share love with other creators by accepting them com-pletely as they are. All you need is a willingness which will allow you to be transformed from a caterpillar to a butterfly, from a bud to a flower in full bloom, from the ego based on separation to a true master.

What does this willingness look like? How can you shift your percep-tion to see as the greater self sees? What does it mean to forgive? How many questions is He going to ask?

Let’s explore these questions and examine what you can do to make the shift into harmony with source while living in the world of your ideal.

You can do much although it may seem like a monumental task. Re-member you are perfect the way you are. All are connected to the creative source of All That Is and this will never change. A part of each of us is changing from the false belief of separation from source. There’s no need to make or remake who you are; you are simply in the act of becoming and it is good. You are be-ing reacquainted with an old friend, the unlimited self!

While this reconnecting, or awaken-ing, may look different for each cre-ator being, there are common steps all will take to ascend into the great-er self. This is not a metaphor. You will be ascending into the greater self in this lifetime, if you choose. Choose now for life is short. Make the request now to cross into your greater self, know your source, and the source of all creation. Make the request; this cannot be done for you. This is the realm of free will. By making the choice, you will activate the greater self. It is the choices of the heart which bring in all that is seen in the first place.

Like Dorothy in Oz, ask three times to know the greater self, the part of you which never left home. This is the great opportunity to reunite with your energy here on Earth! Be bold to make the choice of the heart. Your journey will never be the same for Love goes wherever you go.

The only task remaining is to be vigilant for any blocks to love and clear them when they arrive. In this realm choices are always hon-ored by All That Is. If you had no resistance to Love and harbor no fear within, there would be an avalanche of Love and Grace so great there would be nothing you couldn't manifest. The entire uni-verse would feel your love. To align with source, you need a willingness, nothing more. No fear, doubt, guilt,

or shame. To reach this place, start with gratitude.

Gratitude can be the first response to every situation. Have gratitude for the chance to raise your vibra-tion and see things differently. Make gratitude a knee jerk reaction to everything with which you are not in resonance. It will make all en-ergies smoother and more pliable.

Gratitude will assist in accepting all you are and gives the gift of seeing beyond illusions, to the love that is always there. Where there is grati-tude, there is Love. Where there is Love, there is acceptance. Where there is acceptance, there is for-giveness. Then healing can occur. Be healed now.

Never think an issue must be re-solved outside of you. Clear all that

is from within first. With gratitude there’s an opportunity to get closer to source by forgiving and healing that which presents itself. Release it on command. True forgiveness recognizes the Divine Source within everyone in given situation (even you). Forgive yourself for not see-ing the perfection of All That Is in any situation. With forgiveness, you heal and learn how to choose again to transform anything.

Once you become All That Is, step into compassion. As you align with the greater self, you’ll take on greater attributes. These include, but aren't limited to: creativity; awareness; trust; peace and joy; ec-stasy or bliss; and the greatest two (in my humble opinion), Compas-sion, and Grace.

Many think empathy is synonymous with compassion; it is not. With em-pathy, you do not always accept the energy of another. This is an il-lusion in the first place. You never feel energy from another. You only feel aspects of your extended being and opportunities to release or heal yourself with the other.

In this way, compassion can be seen as total acceptance with Love of All That Is. True compassion can be mi-raculous; it can heal clinical depres-sion and give you perfect protec-tion. It is a radiant source. It shines into this world and no shadow en-ergies can oppose it. A shadow can-not lean toward its source; it must project away. Compassion is a pro-tective radiance in which all is for-given and accepted with love.

The shift may appear to take time although it is available at any mo-ment. However, there's a need to be focused which comes with prac-tice. “An undisciplined mind can ac-complish nothing.”

To make progress in the beginning, focus within regularly. Sit quietly for approximately 15 minutes daily, and, if possible, do it the first thing in the morning as it is most condu-cive when you are in the in-between states of consciousness.

Focus on your breath. Take a breath now. Relax. Allow your awareness to merge into your breath. This is the same breath from Genesis that breathed life into the clay. Focus on the source energy within it.

As you drift inward, take a right turn into your heart and let your journey begin. Before proceeding into the day, set an intention for each situ-ation you will encounter. This will allow you to shift focus at regularly. Call upon forgiveness and compas-sion when needed. If anything un-expected appears, have gratitude for the opportunity to get closer to the greater self and shift to it imme-diately by requesting direct contact with love.

Trust everything is connected to source. Trust you are perfect the

way you are and everything is un-folding in its right time. You will reach the goal and awaken if you so choose. This is The promise. Know it is so; know you can't fail and you will make it. Each time there is a shift of perception, the vale be-tween you and the greater self gets thinner. You become closer to be-ing the master you truly are. If you choose, you will bring the energy from home into this world. This is the promise of heaven on earth.

Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion ~ Jim Rohn

When I was a child, my father was a strict disciplinarian as many fathers

in the 60s, a decade of change. I was in constant fear of my father’s discipline. I remember lying in bed at night, fearful the next day I may inadvertently incur my father’s wrath. His discipline was one of the reasons my parents divorced when I was seven-years-old.

My mother, raising four boys as a single parent, moved us to Kona, Hawaii. I believe she threw out the idea of discipline after being mar-ried to an angry man with a warped sense of discipline and punishment. My brothers and I were relieved

For years, my brothers and I were relieved and allowed to live with ex-traordinary freedom and little disci-pline. We lived in a home surround-ed by jungle. We went to school with no shoes because we could. Homework was a joke. Long be-

Discipline as a Spiritual TraitBy Kenton David Bell

fore ADHD was a household name, we defined it vigor and abandon. Ah, those were the days …or so it seemed.

Flash forward 40 years.

For most of my life I’ve not had the discipline to complete projects. I can hyper-focus and muscle my way through different areas of life, but have found it a very trying and ex-hausting way of approaching any endeavor. I felt defeated before I began.

This has been not only a deep pat-tern, but also, I believe, a Soul les-son for me during this lifetime. It is amazing when I think about what I have accomplished before I recently learned about discipline. Even now, as I sit here writing, I’m aware of the lack of discipline I have regard-ing spelling and typing correctly.

If I had mastered discipline earlier in life, my life would have been quite different. Because I had no self-dis-cipline most of my life, my path took me from one thing to another and on to the next. I chose to exit when even a slight whiff of discipline was

in the air. My relationships did not develop fully because of my aver-sion to discipline.

The life of a vagabond does not require discipline, so that’s what I became. My life was defined by the lack of a quality or the shadow expression of this life quality which others who had discipline might have developed at an earlier age. Money has come easily to me at times, but I always spent it like a drunken sailor. Perhaps if I had practiced discipline as a life quality, I would be the millionaire my earn-ings reflected.

Of course, this is not how life works!

To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wis-dom and virtue will naturally come to him. ~ Buddha

tirement are going to come is mo-tivation for learning the positive trait of this quality. I’m calling it a life quality because I can see when practiced correctly discipline can be applied to create greater quality of life.

Now as a spiritual teacher and heal-er I know we live in a world of dual-ity. Every issue really has a light side and a shadow side. I believe this to be true when we are talking about soul level lessons that perhaps we decided to master before we even came into this world.

I also believe when we master these qualities, our entire world transforms and certain slivers and aspects of Self which had been missing, but we could not put our finger on, begin to illuminate. This is true Spiritual transformation. The Alchemy of Spirit.

Discipline is an important life quality to practice in the positive; it is also the mechanism in which you can begin to bring about other changes and realizations.

We also use discernment when ap-proaching this new understanding of discipline. I see it now as only a positive trait. I do not see punish-ment as part of the equation. Ex-cept when we fail ourselves, in the quality of discipline through practic-ing, our life suffers. This is a form of self-punishment. Practicing dis-cipline in the positive is a form of self-love.

I think about what my Spiritual Men-tor, Alan Cohen, would say, “Suffer-ing is an option.” Perhaps he was also saying something about disci-plined thought and action.

When I lean into disciplined thought, something wondrous hap-pens. If I take on the pure quality of discipline, I feel where thought and

pure consciousness meet.

As a spiritual thinker, this is a pow-erful place in which to live – maybe one of the most powerful.

I can be the example I need for my life and desire to be for my clients/students. How can I lead and teach powerful ideas and bring true trans-formation and light unless I practice these qualities?

The answer is, I can’t.

When I look up the word self-disci-pline, I find many definitions, most-ly shadow expressions. The one which most closely reflects what I’m experiencing is from Wikipedia:

Self-discipline must be viewed as the ability to motivate oneself in spite of a negative emotion. Quali-ties associated with self-discipline include willpower, hard work, and persistence.

I don’t believe we need to apply hard work to it. We need persever-ance. The ability to continue when instant gratification is not really the answer to the questions we are seeking.

We live in a smorgasbord of spiri-tual offerings today. Many individu-als seek answers through many dif-ferent “pathways” in our culture. I see many jumping from one path to another when they don’t find the right answer or cure right away. Many don’t take the time to get the deeper spiritual truths any pathway offers. The quality of discipline is needed to get the “gold” from any teaching. It is as important to look at the way we engage our spiritual pursuits as much as the path itself. Discipline practiced in its high form is key.

Success isn't measured by money or power or social rank. Success is mea-sured by your discipline and inner peace. ~ Mike Ditka

A Time to FlyBy Don Marr

In her book, A Return to Love, Marianne Williamson came up with her now-famous quote about our deepest fear.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond mea-sure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

On October 12, 2011 my home town of Seal Beach expe-rienced the worst mass killing in Orange County history. One week later, I set down and emotionally poured out these words below. I challenge you to listen to the mes-sage and see if you can find yourself somewhere in this simple story as I did that day.

A TIME TO FLYAnd there came a time when a mother Starling took her youngest to the edge of the nest and they looked out over the horizon.

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “I’ve been thinking about it.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “I’ve watched you and pop and I’ve learned a lot but I’m not sure it’s for me.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “You know when you two were feeding me I was always the shortest and I didn’t get as much as the others.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “I wasn’t around when you two built the nest. How will I know how to do that?”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “I’ve heard you say it’s time but look at me. I have mixed colored feathers. I’m not as perfect as the beautiful white Egret.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “Do you feel the wind? It’s blowing way too hard today.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “I know how important our song is and I’ve practiced a lot but it’s not quite the same as yours.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “I’ve seen the Eagle soar so high. There is no way that I can do that. I’ve never seen even you come close to that.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “What about the Hawk? Surely you’ve seen him attack those as small as me.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “Pop told me about a long trip he and his friends took once. What if I get lost and can’t find my way back?”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “And food; you’ve always brought me food. How will I find food?”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “Pop told me about a bird that can channel the notes of many other special birds. If I could just hear that, then I’d feel more confident.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “You and Pop were made for each other. How am I going to find my soul mate?”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “What about the Mockingbird? Have you heard him? If I don’t perform perfectly he’ll squawk to all the others about me.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “I’ve wiggled my tail feathers and tested the strength of my wings. Maybe a couple more days of food and I’ll be strong enough.”

And she said: “FLY.”

Little one: “You and pop have mentioned that I need to match the vibrations of my wings with the air molecules and amazing things will happen. How do I do that?”

And she said: “YOU’LL KNOW…JUST… FLY.”

AND HE FLEW.

What I found out later was not only do these Starlings fly, they do it in amazing aerial displays. A week after I wrote this little allegory a friend sent me an e-mail about a video on You Tube that had gone viral. Check

out “Starling Mermeration” on my web-site. You will get an idea what working as one can truly be. Scientists filming these birds with high speed cameras have found that there is no one leader in this group flight. They ab-solutely represent “Oneness” in action.

What have you chosen to hold you back from shinning the Light that you are? Are you waiting for someone to call you? Are you waiting for perfection? How about choosing yourself, NOW? You see, this is what Marianne did. She has decided to run for office. She’s running for Congress in California’s 33rd district.

The new energy is calling all of us. Are you ready to bold-ly stand in the Light? Are you ready to be who you really are? Seventeen times the Little Starling mentioned he wasn’t ready to FLY and seventeen times his mom gave the same reply, “FLY.”

What she was saying was that NOW is the time; a time to FLY. And no matter what our fears are, remember to FLY (ForeverLoveYourself). This will take you through any situation, any preprogrammed fear you may have about your abilities or strengths. When we see the world through the eyes of LOVE we not only see the world differently, we create it differently.

Learning Patience in This LifetimeBy Rev. Basia Christ, PhD

I have this memory as a baby of getting extremely upset when I couldn't walk the first time I tried. I had no patience to

keep trying and failing. This has been the theme of my life.

My childhood was one frustration after another starting as a small toddler who threw fits because I kept falling.

I remember kicking my bike several times for its cruelty of throwing me to the ground time after time after time when I tried to mount it. My knees were constantly bandaged. I was finally able to stay on the bike for a few minutes; however, wob-bled down the sidewalk while the other kids jumped on their bikes as I had seen the Lone Ranger, the Cisco Kid, and other well-known cowboys do back in the day in the movies and television.

I realized early I had no patience. Things other children seemed to master effortlessly, like tying their shoes (I still have problems keep-ing my shoes tied), putting my hair

neatly into a pony tail and having the rubber band stay in all day were constant reminders I was different.

I accepted this fact, but this did not mean I was happy about being im-patient. Not at all.

As I matured, I had to wait ...

For my turn to take a bath (I was one of six children and in the mid-dle)...

To have my hair done (my hair was long and, as I mentioned earlier, I was not good with this task)...

To have my clothes ironed and starched (yes, I am that old)...

In line for my turn to throw a ball in gym class...

To go to the bathroom (we children had to raise our hands and hope the teacher would acknowledge us in time)...

To give an answer after raising and waving my hand because I knew it...

For the doctor and dentist when I went to their offices for my ap-pointments (why is it they want you to be there ahead of time, but you

end up waiting for the doctor any-way?).

Wait. Wait. Wait.

For every moment I ever waited, I have had anxiety, stress, and frus-tration attached to it.

I cannot tell you how many times I've been told, "Patience is a virtue." I have other virtues, like loyalty, compassion, empathy, kindness, but patience had always eluded me.

As I became an adult and had chil-dren, my patience wore even thin-ner. Kirsten, my daughter, was born in 1975; Elke was born in 1976, and Thor was born in 1977. I had years of changing diapers and waited for them to be potty trained.

Now I had three children plus my-self to wait at the doctors for vari-ous appointments for shots, exami-nations, and illnesses. I waited until they were all in school until I could have a moment of peace. I worked three jobs and went to school. It would be a long time before I had peace in my life, but it was worth the wait.

I waited to speak with their teach-ers. I waited for their grades to see if they were doing well - or not.

Holidays became more fun after I had children. However, this raised the bar of the level of waiting.

I waited for sales on items they had listed on their Christmas wish list. I waited for them to go to bed to wrap and hide the presents.

I made their Easter baskets and waited for a good time to help them color their eggs so I could hide them before Easter morning along with their baskets.

On Halloween, I waited for them to come home after trick or treating with their friends (once they were old enough to go on their own) so I could ration their candy so they would not eat it all at once.

While they were in high school, I waited for them to go to their proms so I could see them in beau-tiful dresses and a tuxedo. Since none of my children went to prom, I waited for naught.

I still had the big wait about which to dream. I waited for them to get married so I could see them in a beautiful white dress or tuxedo.

I had no idea it would be such a long wait to see any of them walking down the aisle.

However, the wait is over (yea!). Kirsten is getting married on June 21, 2014. She waited until she found the right person and I'm so happy she did. Marc is wonderful and they are happy they both waited (she's 40 and he is 41).

Looking at my past, each time I be-came impatient for something to happen, I would take action and make it happen - whether it or I was ready or not.

This has caused many disasters in my life - or so I thought at the time.

For example, I didn't wait for Mr.

Right and married the first man to ask me. It wasn't a happy marriage, but then, I did get my three beauti-ful children.

I didn't wait for the perfect job and took anything so I could support myself and my children. I was not happy with any of the jobs I had early in life.

And so my life went. I would get im-patient, do something detrimental to my life just so something would happen, and it caused heartaches.

It wasn't until I was in my early 60s and found a new path - a path to spirituality - that I finally got it.

I began meditating and asking God for guidance whenever I felt the urge to jump or make an impulsive decision.

One day, I learned the real meaning of patience.

I was meditating cross-legged in the yoga position with my dog, Belle, ly-ing on the floor next to me.

Suddenly, I felt so angry because something I had wanted for a long time was not happening. I wanted my book to be published. I had been working on it for five years and still hadn't found an agent who could sell it.

After all the time and effort I put into it, I was ready for it to happen.

I threw up my fist to the heavens and shouted, "God, why isn't this happening?

A loud voice, so booming Belle jumped up and started barking at the ceiling, yelled back, "God, has His Own Calendar!"

I fell to the floor as if every ounce of frustration left my body at once. I fell asleep and when I awoke hours later, Belle was still at my side, snor-ing.

This happened three years ago, yet I remember every moment as if it

happened two minutes ago.

That day I finally got it. Throughout my life I may have thought I was ready for it to happen, but I wasn't.

Since I have let go and let God guide me, I have discovered patience re-ally is a virtue.

When I'm stuck in line and waiting, I take these precious moments and live in them. I speak with people standing next to me. Sometimes I make them laugh or listen to their troubles.

Instead of waiting for an agent or publisher, I have been writing my book and plan on self-publishing this summer (although I announced it late last year, I was still waiting for it to happen in the back of my head. I finally accepted the path God has shown me).

It is a wonderful book that needed to cook and simmer until I was ready to write it - until I learned the 27 life lessons each woman taught me.

Plus one more. I learned patience.
