“Match racing is an excellent way to improve your fleet racing results. I have helped numerous skippers cross-train in match racing, and it has always been worthwhile weekend of racing. It’s really fun and engaging as well.”

• Invitations to match race regattas are usually based on ISAF skipper rankings, but we give priority to Level A skippers who sign up before March 1st.

Entry Level Classification

CMRC uses a three-tiered pricing structure (Levels A, B & C) for entry fees to balance event costs with our desire to support participation of young adult and amateur match racing teams. Amateur B & C classifications are based on the skipper’s age at beginning of the regatta. Level A is assigned to skippers who compensate their crews financially -- wages or sponsorship. The Level A classification gives skippers access to an additional benefit package (see below), which we hope will help teams maximize their value at each event.

Level A- Professionally Crewed Team: Like many “owner-driver” sailboat classes, Level A teams consist of crew (can be a single member or entire team) who are paid to sail the event. This can include financial donations to their sailing campaigns.

Additional Level A Benefits: The benefit package is designed to get your team familiar with Tom 28 boat-handling and match racing as quickly as possible. You get additional practice time in the boats and coaching. Furthermore, Level A skippers are often given priority over Level B & C teams who may have more match racing experience and a higher ISAF rankings.

• Pre-event boat charter with half-day of private coaching • Concierge service to help organize accommodation, travel, and even crew• Custom CMRC team gear (upon request) and professional photos

Level B- Corinthian Team: Skipper is 28 or older at the start of the event and no crew members are paid to sail the event. ISAF sailor classification is not relevant. Event expenses may be covered by skipper or sponsor.

Level C- Young Adult/ Youth Team: Skipper is under 28 years old at the start of the event; team members may be older. No crew members can be paid to sail in the event, but event expenses may be covered by the skipper or sponsor.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How does the match racing format work? Lots of racing every day.• round robins followed by a series of knock-out style elimination rounds• flights, or groups of four matches, begin with rolling, back-to-back starting sequences that stagger the races so that all four matches can race at the same time • 8-12 races per day

What is the “borrowed boat” system? Equalized, professionally maintained and ready to sail.

• identical equipment so that equipment performance does not affect the outcome of races• sails have the same number of hours; hulls are the same age• teams rotate boats throughout the event

Why are match race entry fees higher than fleet race? Fewer skippers and higher quality events.

• number of entry fees collected is limited to 8, 10 or 12• several costs to the host include: - travel and housing for umpire teams of 8 or 10 - equipment and maintenance for the fleet of Tom 28’s, umpire RIBS, and support boats - operating the match race center facility

Am I Level A if I… …don’t pay my crew wages, but cover their expenses? No.…make a donation to their campaign instead of paying wages? Yes. A donation to a sailing campaign constitutes financial compensation for the crew’s time spent sailing.…sailing with all ISAF Category 1 (amateur) sailors? Maybe. The ISAF sailor classification has no effect on entry fee classification.

What is the best way to get ready for a match race regatta?• read the match racing call book and ask us for other materials• use the pre-event boat charter with coaching from the CMRC Head Coach• let us set up a personalized clinics for you and your team

Is it worth it to sail with professionals in match racing? Yes.

• accelerate your learning curve with on board coaches• with so many races per day, de-brief between races and see results quickly• maximize value of your time learning from a strong tactician who has played the game
