2 LAKELAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

A MessAge froM the President…Welcome to Lakeland Community College, the first college in Ohio founded by a vote of the people. As a college, we take great pride in providing students with the education and training needed to earn a degree, start a career, upgrade job skills or complete the first two years of college education. In addition, it is essential for the college to provide students with opportunities to enhance their college experiences through participation in athletics or on-campus student organizations.

When it comes to athletics, Lakeland has an outstanding history of its teams and players performing at the highest level. Our coaches are top-notch and our student-athletes always strive for excellence on the field, on the court, and especially in the classroom.

Whether you are a participant or a spectator, thank you for supporting Lakeland’s intercollegiate athletic programs. Sit back and enjoy another exciting, fast-paced season!

sCott BArLoW, Director for Athletics

“Academic success for every student-athlete is the ultimate goal of the athletic department at Lakeland Community College,” says athletic director Scott Barlow. “We believe that success in athletics can support success in the classroom and, ultimately, a successful life.”

“At Lakeland, our athletic programs are designed to enhance an athlete’s academic experience by helping our students develop the critical life skills of time management, self-discipline, the ability to work within a team environment, and recognition of the need for personal improvement.”

Barlow was named Lakeland’s athletic director during the summer of 2000. He brought with him an extensive educational and practical background in teaching, coaching, and administration.

Barlow currently serves as the commissioner of the OCCAC and is the NJCAA Region XII women’s division director. He is also regional representative for the NJCAA Division II volleyball and women’s basketball poll and a member of several NJCAA standing committees including softball, swimming, and diving. He is the national chair of the NJCAA’s Division II women’s basketball committee. Barlow was named OCCAC Athletic Director of the Year in 2002 and was selected as Co-Athletic Director of the Year in 2005.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from the State University of New York College at Cortland, where he was a four year varsity baseball player. He has two master’s degrees; one in physical education and health from Radford University and another in administrative supervision from the State University of New York – Plattsburgh. A native of upstate New York, Barlow currently resides in Painesville Township with his wife, Jennifer, and three school age children who are active in a variety of sports.

coachInG staFFRuss Miozzi enters his second season as the head coach of the Lakeland women's volleyball program and his third overall as a member of the coaching staff. Prior to his appointment to head coach in 2013, Miozzi spent the 2012 season as an assistant with the Lakers.

Under his leadership, five players entered the single-season record book for kills, digs, blocks, and assists. Sophomore Alyssa Woltman finished with 252 kills while freshman Shelby Smith posted 217, good for 10th and 19th all-time, respectively. Smith also registered 147 blocks, the third most in program history.

Freshman libero Danielle Talevski recorded 491 digs to finish seventh on the all-time list while classmate Brittany Wentworth handed out 546 assists to finish 12th.

Miozzi's coaching career began at the CYO and middle school level where he led squads at Immaculate Conception School in Willoughby and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin in Chardon.

He has spent the past ten years coaching Junior Olympic Volleyball at the National Open level, helping a number of teams qualify for the national tournament.

Miozzi led an 18-year old team to the Junior National Championship in Atlanta, Georgia where they finished as the 16th-ranked team in the country. He also founded and directed a team from 2005-08 before merging with Eastside Volleyball Club in 2009, when he served as a co-director.

MALiNDA Miozzi and NiCoLE Miozzi enter their third and second season, respectively, on the Lakeland Community College women’s volleyball coaching staff.

Prior to attending Lakeland Community College, Shannon McBride was an award-winning softball and volleyball player at Brush High School in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Shannon and her Brush Arc teammates won both the 1996 and 1997 Greater Cleveland Conference Volleyball Championship and she won the prestigious Jim Whitelaw Sportsmanship and Integrity Award in 1998. Shannon wore the number “7” during her four years at Brush and at Lakeland.

As a freshman at Lakeland, she was named OCCAC Player of the Week two times and garnered First Team All-Conference accolades. She was also the runner-up for OCCAC Player of the Year and won the Team MVP Award that same year after helping the Lakers capture their first OCCAC volleyball championship.

Shannon broke her ankle very early into the 1999 season and missed several games. Even so she served as the team’s co-captain and earned honors as Lakeland’s MVP and NJCAA Regional MVP before the end of the season. Lakeland’s women finished second in the OCCAC that year but went on to win both the OCCAC Tournament and the Runners-Up trophy at the Genesee Women’s Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

According to her coaches, Shannon was an extremely talented “lefty.” Her heart was always in the game, she always knew where the ball was, she played consistently, and she knew how to lead a team to victory. All of those critical assets made her a valuable contributor at all times. In her final season Shannon was ranked inside the top-10 in the country with a .380 “kill” percentage.

Shannon Lee McBride died an untimely death on July 29, 2003. She was 22 years old. Shannon died from complications associated with a tonsillectomy procedure done on Monday, July 14, 2003. Prior to the surgery Shannon was in excellent shape and good health. She was playing on two ladies softball teams, a college volleyball team, and working out daily to prepare for a charitable 10K run.
