1 tHe NIcKNaMe: JaYHaWK the university of kansas is home of the jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history . its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of kansas settlers . the term “jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848 . accounts of its use appeared from illinois to texas . the name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter .

2 tHe aLMa MateR in 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and mandolin club to sing on its tour through kansas to denver and back . no one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals . just before departure, he thought of the cornell song “Far above cayuga’s waters .” hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip . he did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “crimson and the Blue” still goes on . the music is not cornell’s but an old english folk tune, “annie Lisle .”

3 caMPaNILe HILL campanile hill forms the picturesque backdrop for memorial stadium . on a sunny fall saturday, the “hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing . Potter Lake, just to the southwest of memorial stadium and at the bottom of campanile hill, adds to the beauty of the kansas campus .

4 tHe K RING the k ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the university of kansas . as a jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy .

5 WavING tHe WHeat since the early days of ku sports, it has been a ritual of jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every kansas scoring drive in football . the tradition also extends to allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every jayhawk victory . the ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy kansas wheat field .

6 tHe RocK cHaLK cHaNt the rock chalk chant has been the battle cry of ku fans for more than 80 years . this strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by e .h .s . Bailey, a professor of chemistry . on may 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club .

“gIve the world your Best and the Best you’ve got and the Best wIll coMe BacK to you .”

the 2014 edition of the kansas women’s tennis team brings a mix of new and old faces to the program . the jayhawks welcome first-year head coach todd chapman and first-year assistant coach aaron Fuller to the team’s coaching staff . the duo brings a breath of fresh air to a program that hasn’t hired a new coach in 10 years . along with the addition of two new coaches, five stand out freshmen have joined the jayhawks’ squad .

while the team welcomes numerous fresh faces, it also returns a number of veteran players and staff . the jayhawks return six players to the lineup including three seniors (claire dreyer, Paulina Los and dylan windom), one junior (maria Belen Ludueña) and two sophomores (maria jose cardona and anastasija trubica) . volunteer assistant coach Boomer saia returns for his fourth season and 2010-13 kansas tennis stand out viktoria khavenskya returns as a student assistant coach .

“Because of the commitment of the seniors we have, we will lean on them a lot,” said chapman of his veterans . “From an experience standpoint, nd for sure from a leadership standpoint, we will be counting on them .”

the jayhawks showed plenty of promise in the fall season as the team acclimated itself to a new staff, season and sense of determination to improve from years before .

cardona and Ludueña continued their success from the 2012-13 season into fall play . cardona successfully downed no . 61 samantha adams of texas tech at the houston invitational and Ludueña defeated no . 110 mara schmidt of Purdue in the Purdue invitational .

trubica, Los and dreyer also claimed big victories in the fall season . trubica topped maike Zeppernick of no . 16 nebraska, 6-2, 6-1; Los reached the round of 16 at the houston invitational and dreyer completed the fall slate with a 4-2 singles record .

“overall, it was a successful fall and the girls have a lot to be proud of,” said chapman . “the team has come a long way . we now have to take the next step and work hard to have an even more successful spring season .”

2014 KANSAS TENNIS76

unIversIty chancellorsince arriving at the university of kansas in 2009, Bernadette Gray-Little has advanced ku’s mission of lifting students and society by educating leaders, building healthy communities, and making discoveries that change the world .

through the Bold aspirations strategic plan, ku is changing the way it prepares students for success . it’s fostering research and scholarship across all disciplines, and sharing the benefits of a flagship university with the state and world .

Gray-Little led the effort to create new admission standards for the university of kansas . these new standards take effect in 2016 and will give students and families a more accurate picture of what it takes to be successful at a research university .

under chancellor Gray-Little’s leadership, the university has also revamped financial aid, creating four-year renewable scholarships and expanding the jayhawk Generations scholarship . and it has launched its first university-wide curriculum, the ku core, which incorporates both classes and experiences, making ku a leader among its national peers .

Gray-Little has also been instrumental to Far above: the campaign for kansas, ku endowment’s $1 .2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign . additionally, the university’s changing for excellence initiative is making administrative operations more efficient, with the savings being invested in education and research .

as chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, kansas city, overland Park, salina and wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden city, hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, topeka and yoder .

Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the association of Public and Land-grant universities at a white house summit on math and science education in january 2010 . she is also on the board of trustees for the online computer Library center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research .

77administration

dIrector of athletIcsdr . sheahon (shay-un) Zenger is a coach at heart . But when ku chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the hays, kan ., native as ku’s athletics director january 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches . that doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them - and their student-athletes - every step of the way . For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics .

Zenger comes to ku after serving for five years as athletics director at illinois state university, helping steer isu athletics to a place of prominence in the missouri valley conference . the redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second valley all-sports trophy in three years .

at the beginning, Zenger wasn’t headed toward a career in administration . he was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didn’t take long for that dream to materialize . after playing football at Fort hays state and mid-american nazarene college, he finished his undergraduate degree at kansas state . even before he received his bachelor’s degree in english and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at manhattan (kan .) high school . his first college football coaching job came at drake university right after graduation .

in 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill snyder’s staff at kansas state as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations . Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping snyder bring wildcat football to unprecedented success .

it became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger . he sought advice from then-ku chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph .d . at ku . as he completed his Ph .d . in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, ed meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor del shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels .

while focusing his attention on academics, he managed to stay involved in the world of intercollegiate athletics, and specifically football . ‘involved’ may be an understatement . in 1993 Zenger and a friend founded american Football Quarterly, a magazine for coaches . Zenger served as publisher - and then editor - until 1995, when he sold his share of the by-then-thriving magazine .

still, coaching stayed in his blood . after earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new ncaa division i football program at the university of south Florida . a year later he joined the university of wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career .

Zenger stayed at wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to kansas state . he spent a year in the ksu college of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning . he rejoined ksu athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping ksu initiate important development strategies . in 2002 he was appointed ksu’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named athletics director at illinois state .

a published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the ncaa division i committee on student-athlete reinstatement . he also served on two ncaa division i Football championship subdivision (Fcs) division committees, and was a member of the executive committee of nacda’s division i Fcs athletic directors association .

he is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the national association of collegiate directors of athletics (nacda), the association for the study of higher education and the american Football coaches association .

Zenger is married to the former Pam mcanarney . the couple has three children: Luke, abby and jake .

2014 KANSAS TENNIS78 compliance

coMplIance 101:

UNdeRstaNdING tHe “RULes oF tHe GaMe”with the continued success of kansas athletics, the athletic compliance office wants you to understand how you can help ku coaches and student-athletes . institutional control of athletics is a fundamental requirement of ncaa legislation . specifically, the ncaa constitution provides that each institution shall be responsible for: • controlling its intercollegiate athletics program in

compliance with the rules and regulations of the ncaa .• monitoring its program to ensure compliance with

identifying and reporting to the ncaa instances in which compliance has not been achieved and taking appropriate corrective action .

• ensuring that members of the institution’s staff, student-athletes and other individuals or groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all applicable ncaa rules .

under ncaa rules, ku is responsible for all actions of its boosters . therefore, it is also our responsibility to make you aware of consequences for violating the rules pertaining to permissible booster activity . Boosters found in violation are subject to losing benefits and privileges, including season tickets . in addition, the ncaa committee on infractions has required institutions to disassociate boosters who have violated ncaa rules and regulations from the institution .

coMPLIaNce teRMINoLoGYboosteRs you are a representative of ku’s athletics interests, more commonly known as a “booster,” if you meet any of the following conditions:• you are a member of any organization that promotes

ku’s athletics program (e .g ., williams education Fund);• you have made a financial contribution to the ku

athletics department or its booster organization;• you have assisted in the recruitment of prospective

student-athletes for ku;• you have provided benefits (e .g ., summer jobs or

occasional family meals) to enrolled student-athletes;• you are the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of an enrolled

student-athlete; or• you have, in any way, promoted the athletics program

at ku .

Remember: once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains this identity indefinitely . even if you are not a booster as defined by the ncaa, know that your actions involving student-athletes can cause violations of ncaa rules . something as simple as buying a student-athlete lunch at a fast food restaurant is, most likely, a ncaa violation . Please contact the athletic compliance office with your questions regarding impermissible recruiting inducements and extra benefits .

PRosPects a prospective student-athlete, commonly known as a “prospect” or “recruit,” is any individual who has started classes for the ninth grade . in addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the institution contacts the student

for recruiting purposes or provides the student (or the student’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not generally provide to all prospective students . in addition, student-athletes enrolled in preparatory schools or two-year colleges are considered prospective student-athletes .

Remember: a prospect remains a prospect even after he or she signs a national Letter of intent or Financial aid agreement to attend ku . the prospect does not lose this status until the start of classes at the university or until the beginning of official practice prior to the start of classes, whichever occurs first . after classes or official practice begins, the prospective student-athlete then simply becomes a student-athlete .

coNtact a “contact” is a face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent, relative or legal guardian and institutional staff member or athletics representative during which dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting . however, any such face-to-face encounter on the ku campus or during a ku event that is prearranged, or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s educational institution or at the site of an organized competition or practice involving the prospect or the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college or all-star team, shall be considered a contact, regardless of the content of the conversation that occurs .

teLePHoNe/eLectRoNIc coRResPoNdeNce coNtact the restriction on contact extends to telephone and electronic correspondence . any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of athletics interest via these modes of comunication is prohibited . electronic correspondence includes, but not limited to, text messaging or any application that functions as a text message (i .e . snapchat), email, any social media methods (i .e . Facebook, twitter), chat rooms and instant message . telephone contact is any electronically-transmitted voice exchange including, but not limited to, calls and video conferenceing such as as skype and Facetime .

RecRUItING any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of kansas athletics’ interests for the purpose of recruitment, is strictly and clearly prohibited .

it is not permissible for any member of kansas athletics’ staff, alumnus or booster to contact a student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of recruitment . a student-athlete who is attending another institution must receive written permission from their institution before they can have contact with the university of kansas .

if you know of a prospective student-athlete who may want to attend ku, we encourage you to call the appropriate coach . contacting a ku coach is the only permissible recruiting activity in which boosters may participate .

eMPLoYMeNt it is permissible for an athletics representative or alumnus/alumna to contact a prospect regarding summer employment prior to initial enrollment provided the prospect has signed a national Letter of intent . however, no contact may be made without approval from the athletic compliance office . in addition, the employment arrangement for the prospect may not begin until the prospect has graduated from high school . if the prospect is attending a two-year institution, the employment may not begin prior to the time that the prospect has officially withdrawn from or has completed the requirements for graduation at the two-year college .

eXtRa beNeFIts it is not permissible to provide any type of assistance to a prospect — financial or otherwise . a representative of kansas athletics’ interests or a “booster” may not provide anythinG to a prospect, their friends or family, even if the prospect has a signed national Letter of intent or a Financial aid agreement .

stUdeNt-atHLete . a student-athlete is any university of kansas student who is a member of a varsity athletics team .

eXtRa beNeFIts an extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends with a benefit not expressly authorized by the ncaa legislation . it is a violation of the ncaa rules to provide an extra benefit to a student-athlete .

occasIoNaL MeaL you may provide a student-athlete or a team with an occasional meal at your home . this meal can be catered and you may provide the student-athletes with transportation to attend the meal . all occasional meals must be pre-approved by the athletic compliance office

together, the university of kansas and you will make this program a success . these reminders will help guide you and ensure that kansas athletics operates within the rules and regulations of the ncaa as we continue toward our ultimate goal of academic and athletics excellence . if in doubt, remember that in most cases any contact with or benefits given to a prospect or an enrolled student-athlete or their family or friends is strictly prohibited .
