Urban Governance in Smaller Cities : Conservation and Development

BACKGROUND

IUFAIUFA 2014 will take place in Romania and will discuss Urban Governance in Smaller Cities. Some of the best Romanian urban planners, local administration representatives, young professionals and several international speakers will present and debate the planning perspective of two Transylvanian cities, Brasov (Kronstadt) and Sibiu (Hermannstadt), the hosts of the 2014 IUFA conference.

TheThe event is hosted by CEP (Center of Excellence in Plan-ning) of the University of Architecture and Urban Planning in Bucharest. CEP is a private, non-profit organization, which supports the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Ur-banism (UAUIM) in its international educational and research activities (www.cep-edu.eu).

The two “German” towns of Brasov (Kronstadt) and Sibiu (Hermanstadt) hosting IUFA 2014 were founded in the 13th century in the Carpathian mountains by Germans returning from the crusades, at the request of the Transylvania’s prince, in order to protect the land from Othman invasions. Today they are important Romanian cultural, historic and economic centers. Sibiu is a former European Capital of Cul-tureture (2007) while Brasov is the host of the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (2012).
