Letter From the Editor Wow, what a program Pierre presented to us! Thank you Pierre, and to ACI for sponsoring him. And a big thank you to Laura for hosting our meeting. We had several guests this month and hope they will return for this month’s picnic and meeting. We would love to have them join us as new members. We need to learn from them as well. Teri Sheve, of ACI, shared new products with us and gave away some great products as well. We are so grateful to ACI for supporting us in our programs as well as in our newsletter advertising. It is very much appreciated. Without our sponsors and vendors, our programs, organizations, and conventions would not be possible. Our June meeting is a special one in many regards. Paul has offered to host a picnic and open house at his studio on Sunday, as well as the meeting on Monday. It is a great time to get to know each other and sit back and enjoy a casual chat. He has made arrangements for a special discount at the Mead in case you need a hotel. Our speaker and friend, Dave Johnson will be coming early to join in on the picnic on Sunday. It is always a joy to have him speak, as he is so knowledgeable and always has so much to teach us. As you send your RSVPs to Paul, you will receive a workshop handbook via email created by Dave to print out prior to the workshop on Monday. Be sure to get those RSVPs in to give you time to print them. We will be working from them on Monday. Dave has asked us to fill out the questionnaire sent out previously and return to him prior to the meeting so that he knows how to gear his program to us specifically. Please help him by doing so ASAP. This is our opportunity to get the help we need, and ask questions we wish answered. Bring your computers for sure. It is a hands-on workshop for you, personally. It always seems so long between our June and October meetings. Have a great and prosperous summer season. Enjoy the warm weather - we earned it !

A Note From Our President

Indianhead Websitewww.indianheadphotographers.org

PRESIDENT NEIL GEIGER

Neil Geiger

Have Teens abandoned FaceBook? No, I don't think so. Instead, they have expanded their use on different avenues.

Marketing to teens has now taken on a new dimension. Face Book,Twitter and Instagram are now the big three in the teen world. I believe Teen usage of Facebook has declined, whereas Instagram has increased. As you know, Instagram is owned by Facebook, while Pinterest is just another site that teens just don't use much.

There's an article in the Huffington Post that is interesting to read. It seems teens are getting more complicated for marketing purposes.

Hope everybody has a great senior season and summer.

The Twelve Elements

The Twelve elements listed below are in accordance to their importance.

1.) Impact is the sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter,

sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. There can be impact in any of these twelve

elements.

2.) Technical excellence is the print quality of the image itself as it is presented for viewing. Retouching,

manipulation, sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting, and correct color are some items that speak to the

qualities of the physical print.

3.) Creativity is the original, fresh, and external expression of the imagination of the maker by using the

medium to convey an idea, message or thought.

4.) Style is defined in a number of ways as it applies to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific

genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can

impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or

it can have a negative effect when they are at odds.

5.) Composition is important to the design of an image, bringing all of the visual elements together in

concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts

the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending

on the intent of the image maker.

6.) Presentation affects an image by giving it a finished look. The mats and borders used, either physical or

digital, should support and enhance the image, not distract from it.

7.) Color Balance supplies harmony to an image. An image in which the tones work together, effectively

supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be

used to evoke diverse feelings for effect.

8.) Center of Interest is the point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they

view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no

specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest.

9.) Lighting —the use and control of light—refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an

image. Whether the light applied to an image is manmade or natural, proper use of it should enhance an

image.

10.) Subject Matter should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image.

11.) Technique is the approach used to create the image. Printing, lighting, posing, capture, presentation

media, and more are part of the technique applied to an image.

12.) Story Telling refers to the image’s ability to evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each

viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image.

OK, so you are asking yourself "Why the PPA Scoring System?" Those of us that are members of PPA and are entering competition are, or have, doing it so that when we enter the image into PPA's International Photographic Competition. Images or Prints entered have a chance of earning a Merit. Merits are for images that score an 80 or higher. Merits are accumulated to earn the Master of Photography Degree from PPA. Below you will find the guide. Although we use this as a guide there are some of it that don't apply to our competition. You will see there is a category from 79-78 called Deserving of Review. This category is used in the Regional Affiliated Competition and at PPA. If you image scores at 78 or 79 it is brought back before the panel of judges and given another chance to move up to an 80. Likewise, images scoring an 80-81 are also brought back before the judges and can be move down to a 79. The system is called thumbs up, thumbs down. It goes very, very fast. The score of 80 or higher is what we all want. An 80 or higher will get one Merit. You will notice the red line on the chart below. Aim for the scores above the line. You may not always make it, but it's a good place to aim. At the PPA Judging, the Merit Images also go before a panel to select images for the Loan Collection. If select for the Loan Collection you get an additional Merit.

OK, so do I have you confused enough? I hope this helps. If not, don't be afraid to ask questions. As is often said, there is no such thing as a dumb question. We all want to help you become a better photographer and hopefully a stronger business as well.

January Meeting & Photos

Photoshop – Automate Your Workflow

Dave Johnson M.Photog., Cr., CPP, AFS-MNPPA

Everyone knows enough about Photoshop to be dangerous. The danger lies in what we don’t know and how to apply what we know. We will revisit Adobe Photoshop and Bridge and turn them into a time saver instead of a time waster.

We will start the class setting up Photoshop and your computer and File systems. Then we will develop a workflow strategy for your studio while we learn the tools, presets, filters, masking, variables and actions of Photoshop and Bridge. Forging on we will then develop a Retouching Strategy and automating it for your studio. We will then concentrate on collages and templates, creating them and then automating them. Bring your templates with so we can automate them.

This class is for you! Your Photoshop questions need to be answered. A questionnaire is included in a zip file that will be email to you that includes all of the forms presented to create your own Photoshop Reference Book. Fill out the questionnaire and email it to [email protected] so I can answer those questions for you. Closer to the date you will receive an email of the Power Point presentation.

What if you have a question after Class is done. As you will be learning more about Photoshop, you may have a question or two after the class is completed. I will available for any questions you may have in the future. Just contact me.

WE SET OUR OWN LIMITATIONS by Ginny B. Otto

Recently I entered the Master Artist Competition at the District level. This is a first for me and I didn’t really know what to expect, nor how totreat my entries to qualify. I hadn’t really paid attention to this category, and wondered how I could enter images with more technical skills than those in the Photographic Competition. They were incredible. I can’t even imagine myself coming up with images derived from the imagination of Woody Walters.

A number of years ago Indianhead featured Woody at a workshop in Wausau, WI. I couldn’t wait to see him after hearing how wonderful his work was. I was mesmerized by his photograph of Christ, and, even more, so by his rendition of Hell. I stood and stared intimately with the latter, wondering if he had missed any one sin that has taken place on this earth. I wondered how he could have such visions in his head to complete such an intricate piece of work. He placed each inner image in his single vision at just the right angle, in just the right light, and in such a way to direct the viewer throughout the image just the way he had planned.

My head just doesn’t work like that. Perhaps I should be more of a dreamer of sorts. My life has been filled with too many rules and limitations. It takes a great imagination to come up with a new original image, full of excitement and intrigue. We, as photographers (not unlike artists) begin with a plain sheet of paper. It is glossy white, and will soon be turned into a photographic story of the things or persons who surround us in our world, or perhaps in our minds. It is up to us to create a story of sorts to share what we have on our minds and in our souls.

When I consider the goals I have made since January to earn my Craftsman Degree this year or next, with Master of Artistry Degree to follow, it is scary to some extent. I know I can do it. But my mind seems like that blank piece of paper. The deadline for the PPA competition is near and I haven’t a single idea. I’m sure you have found yourself in the same situation more than once. Perhaps you wonder what you will come up with when the next client walks in your door.

We sometimes think we have reached our limits. Have we? Is there nothing new? Then somehow, we reach a bit further in our minds and come up with something to fill our needs.

Truly we are only limited by our own imaginations. I must free myself from that. If only we could have the minds of a child.

While traveling in the west last summer, I saw my first glimpse of three dimensional sidewalk painting. I could never explain the effect the image of wild horses had on me as I stood in the marked view point. It was incredible. The artists have come up with an unbelievable way to soup up the sidewalk paintings we did as kids. Someone used their imagination to turn simple childsplay into a beautiful piece of art.

Page 20: 2014 IPPA June Working Newsletter · Indianhead Photographer’s Inc. Appointed Chairs Print Chair Laurie Hanson W9880 795th Av River Falls, WI 54022 ... Page 8/9- May Print Competition

I’m not a “surfer” as such. I love the ocean, but surfing on the internet has never been my pastime. I was always too busy with clients and orders to care to spend more time filling my space. I had plenty of other things to do. But I have been forcing myself to do just that. Recently it drew some real excitement when I ran into the work of a young man by the name of Ben Heine. He, too, found a way to create something different and original from his imagination, and placed it on a plain sheet of paper in a way that is truly unique. He has granted me permission to share this piece of his work with you and invites you to visit his web site.

It is truly amazing what one’s mind can do if we simply let it. I am inspired by the work of others and their ability to create, allowing no limitations to get in their way.

I encourage each of you to enter this new season, allowing your minds to flow with new ideas of your own. Try something new with each client, or set up one image (just for you) to use for competition. It may just be your ticket to something special.

Let this image, created on a simple sheet of white paper, be an inspiration to you, as it is for me. I am going to work hard to lift those limitations and meet my goals. I expect to stumble along the way, but will not let the limitations that have encompassed me in the past to overcome the future of my work. It is time for me to “dream”.
