Carmels Unique StyleCarmels devotion to the arts is apparent throughout the community but the Arts & Design District takes center stage. The District surrounds the intersection of Main St. and Range Line Roads and features galleries, interior design showcases, boutiques and special events. The nearby Center for the Performing Arts is the home of The Palladium concert hall (see page 9). The venue also includes the Studio Theater, The Tarkington theater and The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook initiative.Carmel also provides many opportunities for outdoor recreation and active lifestyles. Monon Community Center and Waterpark at Central Park and Cool Creek Park and Nature Center are family favorites. Carmel Access Bikeway is a 100-mile bike safe network of six separate routes to encourage biking for recreation and commuting. Coxhall Gardens is a 125 mile-acre park with a recreation lake, tulip garden, two 90 foot carillon bell towers and a childrens garden.Whether listening to the symphony inside a plush concert hall or hiking through a crunchy park trail in the fall, Carmel provides the sounds of a vibrant community.

Within Carmels unique Arts & Design District you will find remarkable artwork both outdoors on the sidewalks and inside the variety of galleries.You may do a double-take when you walk past one of the many life-sized sculptures throughout the district. Created by artist J. Seward Johnson Jr., the Man on the Street series consists of moments of time captured in bronze. A girl pedals her bike for the first time as her father lets go where the Monon Trail crosses Main St. A street musician plays violin in front of Carmel Music Center, an elderly woman carries her shopping bags in front of Joes Butcher Shop and Fish Market. There are more than a dozen Man on the Street sculptures throughout the District.Visitors strolling through the Carmel Arts & Design District on every second Saturday of the month are given a special welcome by the eight art galleries. The Palladium at the Center for The Performing ArtsLocated on the corner of City Center Drive and 3rd Ave. SW, this three year old concert hall is patterned after a sixteenth century Italian villa designed by the renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. Clad in Indiana limestone, the exterior has no backsideall four walls are facades. Inside, the space is a traditional shoebox concert hall, designed specifically for musical performance and finely tuned for acoustics. The Palladium has 1600 seats. Four levels of boxes built into the walls are reminiscent of traditional European venues. The hardwoods, plaster and heavy drapes are all part of the acoustic design and the glass canopy above the stage is adjustable to suit different types of performance. Treat yourself to a Palladium concert and take home a musical memory.


Fishers Provides Family Fun with Historic FlairKnown as a family-oriented community, Fishers was a trading post and then a railroad community when it was founded originally as Fishers Switch. Today, the Nickel Plate Railroad is a special part of the newest town development, the Nickel Plate District. This town center features the historic train that offers rides throughout the year as well as the town hall and the new amphitheater, which hosts a variety of performers in an outdoor, family-friendly gathering space.Another of Fishers special outdoor attractions is Conner Prairie Interactive History Park, Indianas only Smithsonian affiliate. The history of Fishers settler comes alive here with costumed interpreters, kids activities, special events and the 1859 Balloon Voyage helium balloon ride! The schools of Fishers are recognized for being some of the strongest in the state. In addition, the enriching activities, kid-friendly events and unique attractions are the special amenities that draw families to Fishers.

Fishers has long enjoyed a nationwide reputation for being a family-friendly town with top schools, tons of parks and ample housing that fits the bill for upwardly mobile young families. In 2011 The Learning Channel named Fishers as the No. 1 city for families. Its also known for being an all-round great place to live. Last year Money Magazine ranked Fishers the 12th top place to live in the U.S.While those accolades are nothing to sneeze at, the one thing Fishers hasnt been known for is having a distinctive flavor and personality. But now thats changed. The town, which is on track to become a city, is tackling the building of a downtown presencewith plenty of public support for the project.

Downtown Fishers will be a compact area centered around 116th Street and the railroad tracks, stretching three to four blocks east and west and one to two blocks north and south.

Fishers wants to create an environment that is a fun place to live as well as a great place for start-up companies and small businesses to flourish and tap into a solid employee base. We know the demographics are changing, says Director of Community Development Tom Dickey.

Oftentimes people now choose where they want to live first, and find their employment second. We want to attract that next generation of worker, and a vibrant downtown is part of that strategy.

A Vibrant DowntownA stroll around the Noblesville downtown square is like taking a trip back in time to main street days of a past era. The centerpiece of the square is the historic county courthouse, built in 1879 in Second Empire style and renovated in the 90s. Around the area of the courthouse are unique shops, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, antiques and more. Downtown also features a historic bar, trendy restaurants and even a local micro-brewery. Just a few steps away from downtown, a trail leads to some of Noblesvilles other historic attractions. To be enjoyed either on foot or on a bike, the 3.5 mile White River Greenway Trail is a winding pathway that follows the White River. It tours through Forest Park, a special park that offers an aquatic center, mini-golf, a carousel and the Indiana Transportation Museum. The trail then leads to the 1871 Potters Bridge, the only remaining covered bridge in Hamilton County, and surrounding park. In Noblesville, history comes alive with a modern twist and inviting places.

The Historic CourthouseThe centerpiece of downtown Noblesville is the historic courthouse, built in 1879 in Second Empire style. This architecture style originated in France during the mid-1800s. When the courthouse was built, Second Empire style was just becoming popular in the United States. The courthouse features a mansard roof, a clock tower, and arched windows and doorways. The Hamilton County Courthouse was included on the National Register of Historic Places

in 1978 and underwent a restoration in the 1990s. For more information about the historic courthouse and a virtual tour of the building visit www.courts.in.gov.Adjacent to the courthouse is the Hamilton County Sheriff s Residence and Jail, built in 1876. The old Noblesville Jail is the home of the Hamilton County Museum of History today. Visitors can see historic items, restored Victorian rooms, jail cells and a research library at the museum. The museum is usually open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am4pm.

Exhibits, performances, special events and other great creative experiences abound for art lovers, artists and students through Nickel Plate Arts. Created by the Hamilton County Tourism, Nickel Plate Arts supports, promotes and provides outstanding arts experiences in Hamilton County. Nickel Plate Arts follows the historic Nickel Plate railroad line through Hamilton County including the communities of Fishers, Noblesville, Cicero, Arcadia, Atlanta and Tipton. Each community offers special arts programs and events.

The Nickel Plate Arts main campus is located at 107 S. 8th Street in downtown Noblesville. The campus includes two historic houses: the Judge Stone House, a brick house built in 1849, and the Stephenson House, built in the early 1900s. The houses are next door to each other and connected via an outdoor brick patio. The Judge Stone House has a gallery for invitational shows and exhibits. The Stephenson House has classroom space for local artists to teach classes. Both have studio space for local artists to create and display their work. The public is welcome to tour the Noblesville campus and view and purchase art on Thursdays and Fridays from Noon5pm and Saturdays from 10am5pm. Nickel Plate Arts is also open the first Friday of every month from 58pm.

Ivy TechAlthough Hamilton Countys adult population is highly educated (more than 50% have a college degree), until recently there was no college campus in the county. That is changing this year as Ivy Tech is opening a new campus in Noblesville, its 32nd statewide.The states community college system is renovating a building that formerly housed both Noblesville High School and Noblesville Middle School. This years classes start in August with a few thousand students expected. The eventual capacity will be nearly 10,000, opening many new higher education opportunities for county residents.


Old meets new in Westfield, where historic attractions and activities are unforgettable and the upcoming new developments will be spectacular. The Westfield-Washington Historical Society preserves Westfields rich history as a part of the Underground Railroad. It is believed that eight historic Westfield houses were active stations on the Underground Railroad in the 1820s and 1830s. Events such as the Railroad Ghost Walk feature ghost stories from this era with other characters from Westfields haunted past.While Grand Park enjoys its first full season this year (see next page) in the northern part of the city, downtown is starting to take shape as well. A new micro-brewery, new restaurants and shops, and a brand new apartment complex are all part of the vision called Grand Junction. Designed around the intersection of the new US 31 (currently under constructionsee page 45) and the Midland Trace Trail built on the railbed of the old Midland Railroad, Grand Junction will energize downtown Westfield with its walkable scale, connections to the rest of the city and it multi-use buildings. Completion is years away and Westfield is committed to building its future with an eye on its historical past.

It is virtually booked for 2014 with approximately 7,000 soccer matches and more than 5,000 baseball games scheduled.While the opening of the facility is an accomplishment in itself, the big home

run will be Grand Parks impact on the citys economic development. Grand Park will create an appropriate environment for our industry to expand, Mayor Andy Cook says. And that industry is hospitalityhotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Westfield residents are onboard and ready to make the most of the opportunity. Theyre not only excited about the sports park, theyre excited

about the recognition Westfield will receive nationwide, Cook says. Looking ahead, Cook predicts Grand Park will be influential in bringing additional industries to Westfield such as sports medicine, sports research and other sports-oriented businesses. In fact, Wellbrooke of Westfield, a center for health and wellness, opened last June at 186th Street and Wheeler Rd. in anticipation of capitalizing from its location near Grand Park.

The Family Sports CapitalGrand Park is Westfields national stage


A small town in Hamilton County offers big amenities, near the water or back in time. Cicero is a lake community located on the north end of Morse Reservoir. Over 600 homes in Cicero are on the water, have water views or access. Paddlers also head to Strawtown Koteewi Park, just east of Cicero. This 750-acre park offers a canoe launch into the White River, fishing, nature trails and horse trails. Strawtown was the original Native American settlement in Hamilton County and the park is a historical adventure. Archaeologists have discovered artifacts on the site such as arrowheads and pottery. Researchers believe that early people lived on the site from 1200-1400 AD. And the Lafayette Trace, one of the first trails through the American wilderness, went right through here. The small town of Cicero features mighty experiences for outdoor adventures of all kinds.

The Arcadia Arts and Heritage Center is housed in the old 1869 railroad depot and displays the towns history in artifacts and authentic Arcadia Glass. Atlanta Celebrates!For two days each September, as it has for the past 40 years, the town of Atlanta, Indiana, celebrates with 80,000 visitors! One of the states most popular festivals, The Atlanta New Earth Festival is held on the fourth weekend each September. Over 600 juried fine artists, crafters, antique vendors and food vendors gather in downtown Atlanta all weekend long. The gas boom and the Nickel Plate railroad played significant roles in Atlantas history. Gerald and Roberta Terry didnt set out to create a beloved venue where music flows freely (and for free) every Saturday night. All Gerald wanted was a place to work on banjos and play a little music, said Roberta, getting the Atlanta Music Hall ready for another opening. This is the 27th year shes played the roadie role as Gerald (pronounced GAIR-uhld) tunes up for an evening where the bill is split among Big Band, Dixieland, Bossa Nova, jazz, a little bluegrass and even an occasional show tune or Gospel number.Beyond a single string of twinkling white Christmas lights at the halls entrance, theres nothing flashy about this gem in Hamilton Countys smallest and northern-most town. Here, its all about the music. Good music. Played well and enthusiastically. The floors are wooden planks, the seating is an assortment of mismatched chairs and padded park benches, and the dcor is musical memorabilia. Nasty winter weather has closed the Atlanta Music Hall only twice since opening in 1987. Both times were this past January. By the way, Gerald does get that work done on banjos. A small upper room is dedicated to his repair service, which probably is more in demand than most might believe. In early February, he shipped 22 refurbished banjos to the American Banjo Museum in Oklahoma City.Enjoy the music. Atlanta Music Hall 135 W. Sheridans small town environment celebrates a historical site and the best of the fall season. The Boxley Cabin was home to one of Indianas first abolitionists in 1828. Today, the Sheridan Historical Society is offering tours to share this part of Indiana history. The cabin is located on Pioneer Hill in Veterans Park. The annual Harvest Moon Festival in Sheridan celebrates the fall season the first weekend of October. In July, its Sheridan Bluegrass Fever (see ad page 50). On July 11 and 12, 2014 this small town celebrates that uniquely American style of music with a different bluegrass band every hour. Sheridan is also home to Stuckey Farm Orchard and Cider Mill. Visitors can pick 27 different varieties of apples from 4,000 trees, visit the pumpkin patch and enjoy a wagon ride. Autumn in Sheridan is a favorite time with the seasonal activities that all ages enjoy!

When it comes to craft beer it seems the reasons more and more people are enjoying a pint or two are as varied as the beers themselves. And, it could also explain why breweries/pubs continue to open around Hamilton County.

Grand Junction BreweryWhen Grand Junction Brewing in Westfield opened its doors in April, it proved to be such a hit that on the second day of business they ran out of food with six hours left before closing.Obviously we did not fully anticipate as many people turning out as they did, said general manager, Molly Nagy. When we made the announcement wed run out of food they (customers) actually cheered for us!Not to worry, neighboring businessJans Pizzastepped in to help. That sense of community is just one reason the owners opened the brewery in the heart of Westfield. Grand Junction currently offers five of its own craft beers, with three guest taps. Growlers are also available.

Union Brewing CompanyDown the street in Carmel, Union Brewing tends to draw the majority of its customers from the Monon Trail.We are 30 feet from the Monon so we joke we are a biker bar just not in the traditional sense, said co-owner Cameron Fila. I would say we get 75 percent of our customers off the trail. We have people who have been to our location that did not know we had a front door.Fila opened the brewery at 126th and Rangeline Road in the

Monon Square Shopping Center in December 2012 with partners Nathan Doyle and Jay Snyder. His wife, Justine, manages daily operations, while he acts as brewer. Union Brewing offers five staple beers of its own and rotates 4-10 guest beers through as well. Fila said they are known for their cask-conditioned ale.We are one of the few places in the country that do it, Fila said. I had an absolute amazing trip to the UK and that is how beer is still served and I fell in love with it. Its more complex and brings out more of the flavors. They must be doing something rightUnion Brewing supplies The Local and Matt the Millers in Carmel with their craft beer. Theyve also partnered with the Tomlinson Tap Room at the City Market in downtown Indianapolis, as well as the Sinking Ship and Twenty Tap in Broad Ripple.

Barley Island They arent the only ones distributing their craft beer. Noblesvilles Barley Island, which opened in December of 1999, not only serves 12 of its beers on site, but began bottling its product about six years ago. They supply draft and bottled craft beer around Indiana, as well as in the Chicago area.Owner Jeff Eaton believes craft beer has become so popular because people like to support local businesses. And he doesnt see the new breweries as competition.I think its a case of the more the merrier, especially out in the suburbs, he said. It only helps uswe welcome it. It

gets more people drinking craft beer and visiting Hamilton County establishments. Fila agrees. There is just a tremendous sense of communitypeople want to eat and drink and shop locally, Fila said. People are just becoming more aware and that just helps the small craft breweries like myself and has really opened the doors.

Danny Boy and Four Day RayAnd, soon, there will be even more options to relax and enjoy a good beer. Danny Boy Beer Exchange is expected to open in late summer in the Village of West Clay, while Four Day Ray Brewing is slated to open in the fall in Westfield.Danny Boy Beer Exchange will be housed in the same area as Danny Boy Beer Works (a commercial nano-brewery)which was founded in 2011 by Kevin and Lainie Paul, who also own Carmels Brockway Pub. The tap house and restaurant will feature eight to 12

different beers rotating on a regular basis, Paul said, as well as four to five staples. There will be seating for about 100 between the bar and table.The name of Four Day Rayto be located at 1746 Tiller Court in Westfield (in the business park behind the Post Office)is a nod to the railroad heritage of the area.Four day ray is a slang railroad term for a rail employee who habitually calls off one day a week, owner Brian Graham said. And, then people like to abbreviate so they will probably shorten it to FDR, and he was responsible for ending prohibition so it works on several levels.All agree that their customers appreciate the specialized nature of their products. A craft beer usually means that it has come from a place nearby. I think folks are taking more ownership over their community and all businesses within that that community, including craft breweries, Nagy said. Which is, of course, a good thing.
