Life is better on a boat. Out on the open water, no distractions and the sun warming your face, Green Lake boating is nothing short of spectacular . Being our hidden gem in Central Wisconsin, our lake holds almost 12 square miles of water with depths reaching more than 230 feet . From Sandstone Bluffs to the rock formations of Sliding Rock, Green Lake has the most scenic shoreline in Wisconsin (or anywhere for that matter) . Powerboats, pontoon boats, sailboats and fishing boats all call Green Lake home . If you don’t own a boat, don’t fret, we have a number of boat and jet-ski rental services available . (Check under “Recreational Rentals” towards the back of this planner on page 53.)

Heading for the lake? Eight public launch sites make access easy!

There are also launches nearby at Spring Lake, Big Twin Lake and Little Green Lake . All have parking lots and piers . Deacon Mills Park, Sunset Park, Illinois Avenue and Horner’s Landing are popular winter access points for cars and trucks during ice fishing season on Big Green Lake .

the Green Lake Yacht Club has over a hundred year history of providing family fun and enjoyment in the sport of sailing . The organization is one of the oldest in the community and is still going strong . If you are looking for a way to truly enjoy the lake there is no better way than to get out and sail on one of the finest lakes in the country . Come join us and get sailing!

The lake itself is the greatest treasure of our community . Although we generally think of the lake as a summer season asset, many different groups and activities take place on the lake year ‘round . The Green Lake Sailing School, the Green Lake Yacht Club, the Green Lake Wooden Boat Club and the Green Lake Ice Yacht Club all utilize the lake through all seasons and welcome you to take a lesson, a class or sit on the beach and watch a race or a regatta . All organizations have a slightly different focus, yet have similarities in their use of the lake, their impact in the community family and their approaches to stewardship .

Individually, each organization focuses on specific club goals; Green Lake Yacht Club’s goal is to promote sailing and sailboat racing . The Green Lake Sailing School is involved with the youth and adult instruction of sailing . The Green Lake Ice Yacht Club

promotes the sport of ice sailing . And, the Green Lake Wooden Boat Club focuses on maintaining and fostering the preservation of wooden boats and their construction . All four clubs are very active in the community .

The Green Lake Wooden Boat Club hosts an annual in water boat show in August attracting both in state and out of state wooden boat owners . The Green Lake Ice Yacht Club hosts midwinter iceboating events and club sailing when the conditions are right . The Green Lake Yacht Club hosts national and local sailing events or regattas from late spring to early fall with racing events throughout the summer . The Green Lake Sailing School offers sailing instruction from June to late August for adults and children .

All groups use the lake in an environmentally conscience manner allowing traditions and histories to continue into the future . Although these clubs are different in how they use the lake, their mission and efforts are in line with each other . These four clubs have individual histories of well over a hundred years of local involvement in the community . Membership to any and all groups is open to everyone, boat owner, resident or not .

Come join us all and truly experience Green Lake .

summerWhat’s better on a hot day than a refreshing dip in the lake? Green Lake offers sandy swimming beaches at three of our public parks . Spend the day relaxing with your feet in the water and soaking up the summer sun .

The following parks are also equipped with playground equipment, fishing piers, outdoor grills and restrooms; so pack your cooler, and plan on spending the entire day with us!

Dodge Memorial Park (also known as County Park)County Park is located on the Southwest end of Green Lake . This park offers the best beach experience with a shallow sandy bottom and plenty of beach area for kids to play on . This park features a boat launch, beach, snack bar, restrooms, large picnic area and pier .

Sunset ParkSunset Park is located at the east end of Green Lake on County Trunk A . This is a popular area of the lake for water skiing and tubing because of the shallow, sandy bottom . This park also features a boat launch, swimming area (no lifeguard), restrooms, picnic area and pier .

Hattie Sherwood ParkHattie Sherwood Park is located on South Lawson Drive on the north lakeshore . This park offers a sandy swimming beach, swim raft, fishing pier, restrooms, shower area and campsites . In season, (Memorial Day through Labor Day) there is a lifeguard on duty .

summerBig Green Lake is a known haven for outstanding four seasons fishing . Its deep waters and a diversity of structures allows for a variety of sport fish . Green Lake is considered a “quality fishing opportunities” lake . Open water fishing favorites include: small and large mouth bass, bluegill, perch, white bass, northern, walleye, lake trout, brown trout and muskellunge . Maps including lake depth and best locations for each fish are available at the chamber office and on Chartered fishing trips . (See the back of this planner, page 52 in the fishing section.)

green lake conference center — history in the making

summerGreen Lake Conference Center (GLCC) is a unique element in the area’s landscape . The property was discovered by Winnebago Indians in the early 1800s and later inhabited by pioneer settlers . In 1888 during a storm, Chicago socialite Jessie Lawson’s steamboat landed at Lone Tree Point on the north shore . She was so taken with its beauty that she and husband Victor, owner and publisher of the Chicago Daily News, returned to purchase 10 acres . Within 12 years, they developed Lone Tree Farm into 1,074 acres with 2½ miles of shoreline . Their working farm included prize-winning herds of Guernsey and Jersey cows . European-inspired stone walls, bridges and water towers that still stand today, their designs and meticulous construction methods were Lawson’s vision . The largest of her water towers, the 140-foot Judson Tower, has 121 spiral stairs to an observation area at the top; with its lighted cross, it stands as a landmark today .

The estate was sold to H .O . Stone Company upon Jessie and Victor’s deaths . The Chicago real estate firm built an 18-hole golf course in 1928 and 1929 . After a Depression-era bankruptcy, creditors ran the estate as a resort until it was purchased by the Northern Baptists in 1943 as the national training center . Dr . Luther Wesley Smith encouraged this purchase, and it was made possible with financial help from James L . Kraft of Kraft Foods and other Northern Baptist leaders .

Today, a beautiful Christian conference and leadership training center, GLCC partners with both the American Baptist Churches and the wider Christian family to renew and equip ministry leaders, offer family and youth retreats, and fill the Center with people having great experiences and a closer walk with God .

GLCC serves more than 4,000 people a year at family conferences and family reunions, and more than 8,000 kids at youth camps . Excellent meeting space and accommodations (hotel rooms/suites, lakefront and forest houses, dorms, cabins, and campsites) are available for rental groups of up to 1,000 . A total of 720 people can be seated in Bauer Dining Room . This includes two adjoining private dining rooms which seat 80 to 90 people each, providing intimate settings for small groups and banquets . With 30,000 square feet of

meeting space, and full dining and banquet food service, there are many options to meet conference needs .

One of the most iconic buildings at GLCC is Roger Williams Inn . Originally named Lawsonia Country Club Hotel, it was constructed by the H .O . Stone Company . Because of its prominent location on the lake, it is a landmark for both the conference center and the community .

The Northern Baptists renamed the hotel Roger Williams Inn after the English Protestant theologian (c . 1603-1683), an early proponent of religious freedom and the separation of church and state .

Today the Inn sits brimming with potential on the shores of Big Green Lake . It is clamoring for a new lease on life in which the original design elements that worked so well are reintroduced in a manner that translates to the 21st Century . The website, www .RogerWilliamsInn .com, features a video about the vision for a rejuvenated Inn as well as history, old photos, restoration plan and timeline . Restoration has begun on its exterior and interior so that this classic hotel will continue to be a wonderful place to renew guests for decades to come!

A variety of recreational opportunities include boating and lake swimming, tower climbing, disc golf, biking, hiking, basketball, tennis, volleyball, horseshoes, arts and crafts, soccer, shopping at Worldwide Gifts, and golf on the renowned Golf Courses of Lawsonia . Golf Digest magazine rates the Golf Courses of Lawsonia 4½ stars and the Links Course #13 of the Top 50 Most Fun Public Courses . The Links course is defined by tall fescue grass, raised greens and daunting bunkers . The Woodlands has tree-lined fairways, challenging water hazards and a fun par-three cliff hole with a 65-foot drop .

GLCC guests consistently report that once they enter the gates, they feel a sense of peace and tranquility as they wind down into the main area . An abundance of inspirational places are ideal for meeting in small groups, contemplating retreat topics, and being alone and quiet . The conference center is a sacred place .

For more information about Green Lake Conference Center visit www .glcc .org or call 920-294-3323 . facebook .com/glccaba .

“summer shindig” celebrates the season

there isn’t a better way to welcome summer than by joining friends in an evening-long outdoor celebration brought to life through magical activities and family fun .

On Saturday, June 14, our Summer Shindig welcomes families to downtown Green Lake at 5 p .m . Enjoy kids’ entertainment like carnival games, inflatable activities, clowns and other magical fun . Grown-ups can kick back and relax on this summer evening, and enjoy raffles, bingo and refreshing libations .

Our long-standing tradition of racing beds down the street promises belly-laughs and healthy competition for the fastest time . You’ll catch yourself cheering one of two teams as they race on to dress in their night clothes, make their bed and run to the opposite end of the street aboard wire framed beds on wheels . There, the “slumbers” eat a cookie and drink their milk before returning to bed and racing to the finish line . Relay after relay, the bed races keep the crowd laughing . These races are open to any daring team of three . Be quick on your feet because the best time wins .

More shenanigans continue when adults race on modified adult-sized tricycles through a course of cones . Wearing protective head and knee gear, each contestant mounts this classic, slightly oversized, tricycle and speeds through the course . Down the street and back again, the quickest to pedal takes

the prize . Many families have made this event a long-standing tradition, and more healthy competition ensues . Sign up before the event at the chamber or at the event before the race starts .

After all that commotion, you may want to settle in for a bite to eat . Our service organizations put on a great barbecue with hot-off-the-grill summer favorites such as burgers and steak sandwiches . Check out the festival vendors for freshly popped kettle corn, to-die-for hand-dipped cheese curds or a frozen, refreshing treat of an ice cream cone or a snow cone .

Perhaps you’re feeling lucky . Grab a handful of raffle tickets for your chance to win fun prize packages . Put together with finds around Green Lake and beyond, these prize lots will send you home with the perfect assortment of items to remember your fantastic time at the Summer Shindig . And, if you are a good guesser, check out the jar contest . Merchants in downtown Green Lake provide a giant jar of goodies, which will go to the person who can come the closest to guessing the actual number of items!

Classic fun and family time make the Summer Shindig a Green Lake event you won’t want to miss . The shindig is put on by the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and all proceeds benefit the Green Lake Area . For more information on this and other events, contact the chamber at 800-253-7354 or online at www .visitgreenlake .com .

Just stop at the chamber office to fill out an entry form or visit www .visitgreenlake .com for an online application .

After all of the activities, pick your spot in the park on the grass or on your boat in the bay, and end your night with a fabulous display of fireworks over the Dartford Bay at dusk . Two barges are set afloat in the middle of Green Lake’s Dartford Bay to put on a show like none-other . This unique set-up allows for 360-degree viewing from land or water . The new wharf along the shoreline of Deacon Mills Park allows for ample seating . The nostalgia of celebrations from years ago brings goosebumps and pride as you participate in this small town 4th of July celebration .

rock & roll gets competitive

late summerSaturday, Aug. 16, bands compete for a huge cash prize and the title of best band in Green Lake . Starting at 3 p .m . in Deacon Mills Park, five bands will compete for bragging rights, prize money and a trophy .

Every genre is welcomed to the Starlight Stage in Deacon Mills Park for the Battle of the Bands . The future of these musicians is in your hands . Audience participation is encouraged, but limited to one vote for each round . Cast your ballot for the band that is easy on the ears and gets

you on your feet . This family-friendly event takes place next to the lake and is the perfect setting for a music celebration .

Kids’ activities, food and raffles bring the entertainment to a whole new level . Pull up by boat or walk in with chairs — however you get there — you’ll find plenty of grass seating for everyone and not a bad view in the house .

Each band gets a 30-minute set, with a 15-minute break between each band’s performances . During the first round of performances, votes are cast to choose the top two bands to advance to the second round . The top two bands play a second 30-minute set before votes are cast again . The winner is announced around 9 p .m . and invited to play an encore performance for the crowd .

For the die-hard fans out there, when one vote just isn’t enough, you can purchase your favorite band’s bumper sticker at the souvenir tent and it will count as an additional vote towards that band . You will also find fun t-shirts and souvenirs for sale . All proceeds from this event benefit the Green Lake area .

To find out more about this event or enter your band, contact the Green Lake Area Chamber at 800-253-7354, by email: info@visitgreenlake .com, or download an application online at www .visitgreenlake .com . Green Lake’s Battle of the Bands is made possible by the Green Lake Area Chamber and many Green Lake businesses .

late summerFrom the time the second person on earth mixed some chili peppers with meat and cooked them, the great chili war was on . The desire to brew up the best bowl of chili in the world is exactly that old . The Wisconsin State Chili Cook-Off calls Green Lake home on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Deacon Mills Park . Contestants with a talent for concocting the best tasting chili come from all over the state to challenge the recipes of others . More than 40 teams cook up their famous batch of red-hot chili, present their cup to the judges and hope to cinch the prize .

Competitors have to follow strict International Chili Society (ICS) rules to be eligible . Traditional Red Chili is defined by the International Chili Society as any kind of meat or combination of meats, cooked with red chili peppers, various spices and other ingredients, with the exception of BEANS and PASTA, which are strictly forbidden . Discriminating judges keep the rules in mind when selecting their winners .

Judges base their decisions on the following criteria:

n Taste — Taste, above all else, is the most important factor . The taste should consist of the combination of the meat, peppers, spices, etc, with no particular ingredient being dominant, but rather a blend of the flavors .

n Consistency — Chili must have a good ratio between sauce and meat . It should not be dry, watery, grainy, lumpy or greasy .

n Aroma — Chili should smell good . This also indicates what is in store when you taste it .

n Color — Chili should look appetizing . Reddish brown is generally accepted as good . Chili is not yellow or green .

n Bite — Bite or after taste is the heat created by the various type of chili peppers and chili spices .

Cooking starts at 10:30 a .m . and judging at 3 p .m . Winners of this ICS-sanctioned event receive a trophy and $750 to use toward traveling to the World Champion Chili Cook-off to compete for the $25,000 grand prize .

Organized by Bill Munsey and the Green Lake Rotary Club, the cook-off isn’t just for kitchen wizards . Members of the public are able to taste-test the chili after the judges have pulled their samples . Folks will also enjoy live music on The Starlight Stage from noon to 4 p .m . The Rotary Club will offer a few non-chili food items, as well as ice cold refreshments to cool mouths down .

All of this serious competition has to be flanked by a good time . Chili pepper costumes, a comedic master of ceremonies and a crowd that can bear any amount of heat will be ready to have some fun . Join the Green Lake Rotary Club at this hot event and in raising funds to support Green Lake youth programs in the future .

fall in green lake

welcome to the area’s premiere fall festival — harvest fest

fall

**The Jack Taylor Memorial Car Show takes place on Sunday, which means downtown parking is scarce. Please watch for the signage directing you to the free parking at the fairgrounds. A free tram will drive you from the parking area to the downtown and back.

a two-day festival, like none other in Green Lake, takes home the prize for fan favorite . On Sept. 27 and 28, downtown Green Lake is transformed into a down-home, fun-loving, family-fun, fall festival . Everyone enjoys The Taste of Green Lake food fair, classic car show, kids’ activities, live music, farm market and an enormous craft fair that fills the entire downtown area .

Harvest Fest celebrates its 26th year in 2014 . The festival is held throughout the downtown district sprawling over the main city streets . Easily walk from one attraction to the next to build your collection of crafts, produce and mouth-watering foods .

More than 100 crafters are in attendance to showcase their hand-made creations . Favorites include jewelry, wooden signs, glass art, copper sculptures and so much more . All that crafting may get you hungry, so treat yourself to a cream-puff, homemade pie, or another sweet or savory item from the many service organizations offering good eats on Saturday starting at 10 a .m .

Nestled in with the crafters at Playground Park is the “Sink the Bismarck” challenge, kids’ games and activities . The one-of-a-kind petting zoo features out-of-the-ordinary animals and pony rides . Your kids will enjoy bouncing around on giant trampolines or the inflatable activity zone . Have fun and support the Green Lake area youth groups when playing a variety of carnival games .

Water Street turns into a Farm Market haven with dozens of vendors displaying their home-grown, hand-made or locally-raised organic goods . Bring home a bushel of apples, a sourdough loaf, pumpkins, mums or

pick from any of the other plethora of fall produce you can imagine . Sample hand-mixed dips and spreads and enjoy talking to the local farmers and artisans .

Saturday’s Harvest Fest parade is the largest of the year with over 75 entries . Grab a seat along the parade route and sit back to be amazed and entertained . Jugglers, marching bands, stilt-walkers, tiny racing cars, whacky-wheelers, antique cars, hand-decorated floats and of course fire engines always entertain .

One of the most anticipated features of Harvest Fest, The Taste of Green Lake, opens its tents at 10:30 a .m . on Sunday . A street-full of area restaurateurs send wafts of gourmet food into the air . Brat-burgers on pretzel buns, butternut squash ravioli, tenderloin sandwiches and seafood chowder are just a few of the menu items we’ve had in the past . The most common practice is to bring a friend or family member to share all your entrees with .

Also on Sunday, 100s of classic cars will line the streets on display . The Jack Taylor Memorial Car Show features 1988 or older, show condition autos . Stroll the streets and note your favorite — all registered participants are entered into a drawing for more than $2,000 in prize money! In 2013, nearly 600 show cars were on display .**

The finale of this two-day festival is the waiter’s race . Watch as contestants run a race, pour wine, set a table and navigate up a hill, all while being timed . Spectators can line the course and cheer for their favorite local waiter while they compete for the winning title and bragging rights with the traveling trophy to proudly display at their eatery .

The entire two-day event is set to the tune of live music . Whether you’re sitting front and center at The Starlight Stage watching a cooking demonstration, on the square listening to live music or in Playground Park swaying to music of the Andes, your Harvest Fest experience is everything a fall festival should be .

You are guaranteed a good time when you join Green Lake at their harvest celebration . Harvest Fest may just be one of the best ways to enjoy the small town of Green Lake . For more information and a full schedule of events, visit www .visitgreenlake .com or call 800-253-7354 .

winter in green lake

frozen big green is an ice fisherman’s paradise

winter

after a hectic holiday season, relax and unwind out on the frozen waters of Big Green Lake . Freezing temperatures in December create ideal conditions on Big Green for ice fishing . Anglers have a unique opportunity to fish for deep water fish species typically not available to weekend anglers in the Midwest . This ideal mix of cold and deep water make Green Lake a popular destination and tradition to anglers seeking an exceptional fishing experience on the solid water .

Famous for the lake’s population of great tasting and trophy lake trout, the lake also yields tremendous catches of freshwater cisco . This member of the Whitefish family is delicious when smoked or broiled . Both species are readily targeted through the rental of a furnished, heated shanty by one of the lake’s three area outfitters .

Mike Norton’s Fishing Adventures (920-295-3617 — www .biggreenlakefishing .com ) will provide a heated ice shack and all the equipment necessary for jigging and bait fishing lake trout . The Norton “Ice Train,” an ice sled pulled by a specially equipped Suzuki Samurai with flotation devices, transports the anglers for a half or whole day of fishing . Mike’s specialty is providing an affordable way for parties to enjoy ice fishing on Green Lake with no investment in equipment or any prior knowledge of ice fishing techniques .

Dennis Walker’s Guide Service (920-294-0611 — www .greenlakefishing .com) also provides heated ice shacks and full setups for its anglers . Additionally, Dennis Walker will set up your ice fishing adventure to target both deep water species as well as more traditional fare, including northern pike, walleye and panfish .

Joel Baranowski, of North Bay Sports, (920-294-6462 — glfishing@yahoo .com ) has years of successful open water and ice fishing experience on the big waters of this fisherman’s paradise . Your ice fishing party will not only be guided for the deep water species, but also for perch, panfish and trophy pike . North Bay can also provide you with the latest in equipment, bait and refreshments for your adventures on the lake .

A word of warning and caution: Due to its extreme depth, Big Green is one of the last lakes in the state to freeze over, so anglers are forewarned to always check on ice conditions by stopping by or calling any of the area guides mentioned above. Locations of heaves and open water can change quickly, making it especially important to check on ice conditions and reports from various areas of the lake before heading out on this natural public treasure.

ice boating and racingThe Green Lake Ice Yacht Club has a hundred year history of iceboating on Green Lake with its members participating in many of the different classes ranging from DNs, Skeeters and Renegades, to Nites and Sternsteerers . Their site is intended to facilitate communication within the club and with other iceboaters throughout the world . The Ice Yacht Club’s motto is: You haven’t iceboated until your runners hit our ice .

Visit their website at www .gliceboats .blogspot .com for an update of events, activities and how to get involved . See you on the ice!

thrasher opera house —a true piece of green lake history

Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake today holds true to its original purpose as a gathering place for the community . Built in 1910, the opera house remains a symbol of the history that has already passed through Green Lake, and since its extensive remodeling and grand re-opening in the summer of 1998, it serves as a ready participant in the history that is yet to come .

Thrasher Opera House has been serving the communities all around the Green Lake area since 1910 when Charlie Thrasher saw to it that there would be a place in town where many kinds of events could bring people together . The fact that the opera house was originally the hub of community activity is no surprise . When Charlie Thrasher built it over a century ago, the facility hosted school dances, basketball games, town meetings and town lectures . Before television and radio, the days of vaudeville brought traveling theatrical companies to Green Lake . As time evolved, so did the opera house .

Charlie Thrasher operated his namesake opera house until 1939 . However, by WWII the building languished into a warehouse and eventually fell into a severe state of disrepair, slated for condemnation .

In 1994, Ron Hagstrom, a prominent real estate broker in Green Lake with a lifelong interest in broadcasting, music and theater, purchased Thrasher Opera House, and immediately began drawing up plans for a complete restoration . Rather than tear it down, he wanted to bring the opera house back to life .

The renovation was complete in 1997 . Thrasher Opera House reopened that summer hosting several artists for the annual Green Lake Festival of Music, a highly regarded summer series of classical concerts that now makes the Thrasher its home base . In 1998, Thrasher began presenting its own events, thereby reestablishing itself as home to community and cultural events . Registered on the National, State and City registers of Historic Places, the vision was realized . The community was once again enthralled with its opera house: children were laughing and people gathered to listen, watch and to be entertained .

Since its reopening, the Thrasher provides 50-to-60 nights of diverse programming that includes music and theater performances, comedy, educational workshops for youth and adults, school plays, as well as community forums and debates . The Thrasher annually hosts two week-long residencies by the Missoula Children’s Theatre, each involving 55-to-60 area children, in January and in June . The opera house is also used for weddings, business meetings, fundraisers, movies, parties, memorial services and other public and private events . The opera house continues its important and historic function as a community gathering place where emotions and ideas have been exchanged for more than 100 years .

The 2014 season offers another year of high-caliber performers, including musicians The Duhks, Willy Porter, Lunasa, Harry Manx, David Wilcox, Red Molly, Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett, Missoula Children’s Theater, Paul Thorn, and Chris Hillman & Herb Petersen . Visit www .ThrasherOperaHouse .com for their full event schedule .

grab your clubs, let’s hit the links!

the 36 holes at Lawsonia, 27 holes at Mascoutin Golf Course, 18 holes at Tuscumbia Golf Course (plus their par 3 course), and 18 holes at White Lake Golf Resort make up over 100 holes of the finest golf in Wisconsin. All of the courses are within a short drive from Green Lake and all are members of the Green Lake Golf Pack.

The Golf Courses of Lawsonia: Enjoy two diverse golfing experiences at what Golf Week and Golf Digest recognize as one of “America’s Best” public golf facilities . Golf Week ranks the Links as the No . 3 public course in Wisconsin and No . 55 “Classic” course in the nation . Golf Digest rates both courses in the top 10 in Wisconsin .

Located on the historic grounds of the beautiful Green Lake Conference Center, Lawsonia offers 36 championship-caliber holes . The Links, with its wide open Scottish look and feel with rolling fairways featuring large fairway bunkers and huge elevated greens will test every club in your bag . The Woodlands is carved out of the thick forest that borders beautiful

Green Lake . The course features tree lined fairways that define each hole, along with severe elevation drops — some as much as the 65-foot drop from tee to green on the difficult 167-yard, par-3 number 3 .

The Caddyshack, an English pub-style restaurant, offers both indoor and outdoor seating along with a private dining room featuring a wonderful selection of items served from 6 a .m . through early evening . The award-winning clubhouse fills its 2,000 sq . ft . with a complete line of quality golf apparel for both men and women . The Golf Courses of Lawsonia offer club fitting, bag storage, personal or group lessons with our golf professionals, GPS system on all carts and Laser Link .

Mascoutin Golf Club: Some 300 years ago, fire worshiping Native American Indians lived in Mascoutin, a village just south of Berlin . It is in this gently rolling setting that Larry Packard, in 1975, carved out a magnificent 18-hole golf course through century old trees . Giant undulating greens test your putting ability and sand traps galore wait to swallow an errant shot . Water hazards come into play on the final four holes .

With bent-grass fairways and overall superb conditioning, the layout appeals to golfers of all abilities . In 1999, Mascoutin opened a new mystifying nine designed by Rick Jacobson .

Tuscumbia Country Club: Tuscumbia turned 100 years old in 1996 giving it landmark status as the oldest golf course in Wisconsin . Bearing the slogan “Where History Lingers on Every Green,” Tuscumbia’s 27-hole, public, 6,301-yard, par 71 layout has the reputation for being one of the best manicured courses in the state; providing the golfer with a park-like setting of majestic evergreens and century-old hardwoods, thick rough, tight fairways and a rolling landscape .

(continued from page 25)

The “Blue” nine features waste bunkering, elevation changes, forced natural hazard carries, river views, water hazards and even a “cliff” hole making it a spectacular golfing experience . Come play Mascoutin, “Wisconsin’s Best Kept Secret .” Site of the 2006 WSGA State Amateur Championship . Mascoutin Golf Club is located an easy drive 6 miles north of Green Lake .

A log clubhouse with a large rustic fireplace and charming decor accommodates outing arrangements, dinner parties, banquets and meetings . Other amenities include: a full fleet of motorized carts, 9th-hole snack shop, driving range, practice green, fully-stocked pro shop, club repairs and storage and locker rooms .

Tuscumbia’s golf course is Wisconsin’s oldest and friendliest place to enjoy a challenging and spirited round of golf . Golf here promises to be one of the most memorable rounds you’ll ever play whether you’re a novice or seasoned professional . Tuscumbia has all the amenities you expect from a fine classic golf course with a courteous and professional staff ready to assist you .

White Lake Golf Resort: This challenging 18-hole golf course is carved out of ancient glacier-formed land with an unusual western style that is apparent by exquisite natural landscaping and hilltop scenic views of rolling terrain, vast woods, sloped greens, free roaming peacocks and spring-fed ponds . The par 72 layout, with maximum distance of 6,359 yards, has about 10 dog legs, sprawls over 200+ acres of natural paradise and encompasses two separate circles of nine holes, which provide significant elevation changes .

The first nine, built in 1985, has a 515-yard sixth hole, which requires several hefty shots to get uphill over a dense tree-lined valley and to a tree-guarded green . Hole nine is a par 4 with a dog left, and has a green tucked between a pond and a sand trap . The course’s newest nine has more than a dozen barriers of ponds, traps, trees and wooded areas to avoid . The 15th hole is a par 5 and has a trap-protected dog leg left, a fairway pond and a tree-buried green . Clubhouse amenities include: pro shop, practice green, bar and sandwich shop . An adjoining multi-recreational vacation resort is surrounded by 35 modern and rustic rental units, a supper club and lounge, and a crystal-clear lake with a sandy white beach .

The property also features a game room, piers, rafts, diving board, water slides and playground that sits adjacent to the course . Play and stay at the “Home of the Peacocks,” just minutes from Green Lake between Montello and Princeton off Hwy . 23 .

Golf Pack: Take advantage of the Green Lake Golf Pack and play all five courses . Contact a host hotel and allow them to make all your arrangements . For more information contact the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce at 800-253-7354 .

Miles

The varied terrain of the Green Lake area offers a perfect palette for a variety of unique biking experiences. From the lakeshores of Green Lake and Lake Puckaway to the White Marsh, Princeton Prairie State Natural Area with river bends including the Amish Country. There is a route for every level of cyclist. There are 140 miles to ride identified in the seven routes on the adjacent map.

Routes 1-3 take you North of Green Lake where you will find rolling hills of farmland, abundant bird watching and wildlife of the prairie and marsh.

Routes 4 and 5 will take you through the Amish Country and near Lake Puckaway.

Route 6 includes the quiet setting of Little Green Lake. Route 7 is the loop around Big Green Lake.

n The routes range from 14 to 23 miles. Put a combination of these routes together for a wide variety of the good ol’ outdoors.

n Right in the City of Green Lake you can enjoy the city circuit route (see map on other side), which winds through the park-like streets of the city. Miles of the historic Green Lake Conference Center trails are just a short ride from downtown.

n For the trail riders — Green Lake County offers the Mascoutin Valley Trail. The Mascoutin, approximately 12 miles in length, stretches along the old Milwaukee rail bed. The base consists of crushed limestone and grass. Available for both the biking and hiking enthusiast. Scenic beauty abounds as the trail passes alongside farms and wetlands. The trail entrance in Berlin is located on County Road F and in Ripon on County Road E and Locust.

Green Lake has unique lodging accommodations along with a variety of dining options and outstanding live music to complement your daily bike trip. There is always time for a lazy day on the water, too!

Check out our website for updates. The Green Lake Greenways initiative has great plans for the area!

Ride at your own risk. The City of Green Lake, Green Lake County, Green Lake Greenways, Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Landowners are NOT responsible or liable. Bicyclists are urged to obey biking safety rules, wear helmets and ride with caution.
