Conservation Arboriculture and Tree Risk Assessment This presentation examines aspects of tree morphology, aging, survival strategies,co-evolution and micro-ecology and veteran tree management techniques. A reviewof veteran/heritage trees from around the world will be presented to demonstratehow old trees are safely maintained in the landscape. We will also explore tree riskassessment methods and discuss how these can be applied to the managementof aging urban trees to balance ecological values with human aesthetics and safetyissues.

A View from the Top of the Redwood ForestThe redwood forests of coastal California are a unique environment, found nowhereelse on Earth. These forest giants are also arks of biodiversity, and can teach usmany lessons about the lives of trees and other organisms. This presentation drawsfrom lessons learned during a climbing expedition with Dr. Steve Sillett, theforemost redwood researcher in the world, during which the team used sonictomography to assess the level of internal decay in the highest reaches of theredwoods.

Alberta Greenhouse IPM Project Research and Development UpdatesSpeaker: Dr. Kwesi Ampong-NyarkoKwesi’s current project objective is to increase greenhouse profitability by promotingthe use of integrated pest management and stimulating continuous improvementof producers’ crop practices. The project has completed a baseline survey andthese results will be presented.

Disease Management for Greenhouse CropsSpeaker: Dr. Jian YangResearch on disease management for greenhouse vegetables and a new filterdevice being developed to treat recirculated nutrient solution in hydroponic systemsare a couple of the projects that are ongoing with Alberta Innovates. Gardeners of any level and experience can benefitfrom visiting these amazing institutions, gaininginformation and inspiration. Using images from her visitsto botanic gardens in places such as London, Dublin, NewYork, San Francisco and Vancouver, Jane will explorewhat makes a garden a botanic garden, and will showcasethe role these gardens play for gardeners and our society.

11:00 am - 12:00 pm Green Roofs: Learning From the ChallengesSpeaker: Gord KochIn the prairie provinces, and specifically Alberta, the trendin green roof applications can still be considered in thepreliminary stages, but has shown positive potentialthrough steady growth. The benefit of green roofs arebecoming well known across horticulture. Building andconsulting industry sectors are contributing to manymultidiscipline teams developing and implementing greenroofs. As this sector moves toward maturity, there arelessons to be learned from the challenges of designing,installing and maintaining green roofs. This presentationwill provide an overview of challenges that confront greenroof implementation and considerations in addressing thechallenges.

Speaker BiographiesDr. Kwesi Ampong-Nyarko is aresearch scientist at AlbertaAgriculture and Rural Develop-ment. He received his PhD inAgricultural Botany from theUniversity of Reading in England.

He has a multi-disciplinary background withdemonstrated expertise in crop production, weedscience, Integrated Pest Management andinternational agriculture development. His currentresearch is on diversification in field andgreenhouse crops.

Bill Arman worked for and helpedgrow one of the biggest landscapeoutfits in the US. He’s seen howthe big boys do it, and how theirsystems and structures work. Hisknow-how is rooted in recruiting,

hiring, training and growing great people - thatalong with quality assurance. Bill’s sessionsprovide folks with practical, actionableinformation. His hands-on, interactive approachis fun, challenging, and leaves participantswith specific items they can take back to theirorganization and use.

Dr. Michael Brownridge receivedhis Bachelor and PhD degreesfrom the University of Newcastle,Faculty of Agriculture. In 2009, hejoined the Vineland Research andInnovation Centre as Research

Director in Horticultural Production Systems.Dr. Brownridge oversees four research programswhile maintaining active research focused on thedevelopment of bio-control tools and theirintegration into production systems in turfgrassand greenhouse crops.

Dr. Ken Fry, Coordinator for theHorticulture Program andEntomology Instructor at OldsCollege, has been involved ininsect pest management research,teaching and extension for 25

years, including nine years as a researchscientist at the Alberta Research Council. Hisresearch is focused on biological control of insectpests and integrated pest management.

Don Harfield is the leader of theThermochemical Processing Teamas part of Bioresource Technolo-gies located in Vegreville, and isa researcher at Alberta Innovates– Technology Futures. His focus

is on research and development projects relatedto carbon-based specialty products includingbiochar. Don is technical lead for the AlbertaBiochar Initiative and is on the advisory board forthe International Biochar Initiative.

Mike Jenkins is aBiological SciencesTechnician for the City ofEdmonton Pest Manage-

ment Laboratory. He has been splashing inpuddles and collecting weird bugs in this positionfor more than 20 years, first as a student and lateras supervisor. Although the lab is probably mostfamous for monitoring mosquito populations, oneof their primary tasks is trapping and surveyingto detect invasive species that could harm oururban forest.

Troy Kimoto works for the CFIAwhere he has been a Forest PestSurvey Biologist for the past 12years. He's been involved indeveloping survey procedures forEAB and other non-indigenous

forest pests such as the Asian Long-hornedBeetle and Thousand Cankers Disease.

sustainable landscape applications. Prior tojoining Olds College, he spent 25 yearsmanaging the design and installation oflarge-scale public and commercial landscapeprojects. Gord has been an accredited GreenRoof Professional since 2009.

Ed Laflamme started hisbusiness in 1971 with $700 heborrowed from his mom. Heturned that into a multi-milliondollar company before selling it in1999. As a long-time owner he

has made enough mistakes to qualify him to helpmost folks avoid making the same ones (orworse). He understands your frustrations, worriesand concerns. Ed is co-founder of The HarvestGroup and his latest venture, The Harvest WayAcademy, is an online resource for businessowners and managers. Ed is also recognized asa Landscape Industry Certified Manager.

Dr. Barry Lyons is a ResearchScientist with Natural ResourcesCanada, Canadian Forest Servicein Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Heobtained his PhD in Entomologyfrom the University of British

Columbia. Barry has been investigating thebiology of the Emerald Ash Borer beginningshortly after its discovery in Canada in 2002. Hisrecent research focuses on the biology andbiological control of this invasive insect.

Everett Marwood holds a BAScdegree from the University ofWaterloo. He is now a Calgary-based investor and entrepreneur,and is very excited to speak ongreen technology and promising

profits that will evolve from the Algae Aqua-Culture Technology refinery developed inWhitefish, Montana.

Bill McCurry has a candid andfact-based approach to reality. Hissessions are full of real worldapplicability expressed with livelyhumor and enthusiasm. Bill’sbackground includes being CEO

of 17 retail locations and 225 employees,co‐author of four business books, business radiotalk show host, columnist for Green ProfitMagazine and frequent speaker at leadinghorticultural events.

Dr. Moyhuddin Mirza retired fromAlberta Agriculture and RuralDevelopment in October 2008. Heis now a consultant for the AlbertaGreenhouse Growers Association(AGGA) for education and

extension. He continues to write for the AGGAnewsletter and maintains an active interest in thedevelopment of the greenhouse industry.

Jerry Montgomery operatesMontgomery Consulting Services,a firm that works exclusively inornamental horticulture supplychain. His career has allowed himto work with growers, distributors

and breeders, giving him a broad perspective ofthe supply chain. Jerry uses his experiences inthe various segments of the industry, combinedwith his vast exposure to retail, to developstrategies used to compete successfully in achanging retail environment.

Nabeel Mohammad works withAlberta Agriculture and RuralDevelopment (AARD) as anirrigation specialist and projectlead with the greenhouse programat CDC South in Brooks. Nabeel

has conducted applied research projects inaquaponics and substrates trials, and irrigationand nutrient management focusing on achievingresults on growing healthy plants. He receivedhis MSc Horticulture degree from the Universityof Baghdad in 1988.

Dr. Christopher Murray hasmore than 14 years experience inthe study of water quality and theinteraction of water with materials.He has undertaken studies on theimpact of nutrients on surface and

groundwater quality, on technology aimed atremoving dissolved and suspended pollutantsfrom stormwater and wastewater, and on theimpact of different soil amendment products onagricultural runoff.

Jane Reksten is currently theManager of the Botanic Gardensand Greenhouses at OldsCollege. She received her BAfrom the University of Victoria inMicrobiology and Environmental

Studies. After five years in the landscapemaintenance industry, she joined the Calgary Zooand Botanical Gardens, first as SchoolyardNaturalization Project leader, and later asBotanical Education Coordinator and Manager ofContinuing Education.

Jim Ross has been the ResearchManager for the turfgrass sectionat Olds College since 1991. Priorto Jim’s arrival, a researchpartnership with the AlbertaTurfgrass Research Foundation

was developed and this long standing partnershiphas ensured that Olds College is the home forturfgrass research in Western Canada. Jim hasbeen responsible for business operations, andthe planning and implementation of variousresearch areas that include: stress physiology,pathology, weed studies and varietal trials.

Dr. Nick Savidov, PhD, is aninternationally recognized expertin agro-ecosystems. He wasthe first researcher to suggestusing carbonized agriculturalby-products, known as biochar, as

a soilless medium for greenhouse production.Nick continues his research in the Bio-IndustrialOpportunities Branch as a Senior ResearchScientist developing advanced agriculturalsystems based on water and nutrient recyclingfor commercial growers.

Dr. Jan J. Slaski is a SeniorResearcher and a ProgramLeader with the BioresourceTechnologies Unit of AlbertaInnovates - Technology Futures inVegreville. He obtained his MSc in

plant physiology from the Warsaw AgriculturalUniversity and PhD in Agronomy from the PlantBreeding and Acclimatization Institute in Poland.His current research is focused on developingtechnologies applicable to adaptation of theagriculture industry to changing environmentaltrends.

In her spare time she is the business manager ofa commercial greenhouse growing customcontainers, annuals, perennials and ornamentalgrasses.

Tim Tripp has been involved withturfgrass as a student, researcher,educator and now as a salesrepresentative. In 2011 he tookthe position of Canadian ProductManager for Neudorff North

America. This position was created as a result ofthe success of Fiesta lawn weed killer in Ontario.Tim’s goal is to foster growth in the turfgrassindustry by means of a high quality, low riskapproach to pest control products.

Philip van Wassenaer, BScEnvironmental Sciences, Masterof Forest Conservation, is theprincipal consultant for UrbanForest Innovations, Inc., whichspecializes in the preservation,

enhancement, and management of the urbanforest using a research and science-basedapproach. He is an ISA Certified Arborist, amember of ASCA, and a Past President andDirector of the Ontario Urban Forest Council.

Dr. Jian Yang has over 25 yearsof experience in plant pathology,working mainly on canola andgreenhouse vegetable diseases.Her other projects include plantdisease diagnosis, greenhouse

vegetables and turf diseases, and biochar asgreenhouse growing media. She obtained aBAgSc from Huazhong Agricultural University inChina, MSc from the University of Saskatchewanand PhD from the University of Alberta.

Dr. John Zhang received his PhDin plant pathology from Ohio StateUniversity. He works as seniormanager, Director of GreenhouseBranch for Alberta Agriculture andRural Development. Dr. Zhang

has held a number of greenhouse managementand executive positions in greenhousesthroughout North America. He is a frequentspeaker at seminars and conferences, and sitson a number of advisory committees forgreenhouse production, management, andresearch and technology development.
