WESTFIELD BONDI JUNCTION

Richard & Famous – Richard Simpkin This exhibition has no language barriers – it works from Australia to Europe, USA, Asia the Middle East and everywhere in between. Artist Richard Simpkin has been able to capture his life in photos over 24 consecutive years. You not only see Richard change throughout the years, but you also see changes in the multitude of celebrities that he has been photographed with. Today, with its technological advancements, everyone is taking photos on their phones & other devices. The Richard & Famous exhibition started long before the invention of camera phones. It captures the innocence between fan & celebrity that today has been lost. Although most people these days have a photo or two taken with a celebrity, it is hard to deny that Richard Simpkin has achieved a remarkable feat and now has one of the most fascinating self-portrait exhibitions in the world today. www.richardandfamous.com

Box Brownie Landscape – Alice Blanch This series depicts the Australian landscape in its raw state. The series embraces the moods and textures of the landscape rather than the specific geographic details of where the exposures where taken. By highlighting these ephemeral elements in the landscape the resulting images are filled with ambiguity and emotion. The photographs in this series were all captured at various locations around Australia in a 1940’s Box Brownie camera on black and white 120 film. Alice Blanch is an emerging Australian photographer influenced by the ephemeral nature of the sky and its relationship to the landscape below. Alice works with photographic film in old cameras, enjoying the possibility for magical and unpredictable results and is passionate about using analogue processes and techniques in new and experimental ways. http://www.aliceblanch.com/ LISTING INFORMATION Venue: Westfield Bondi Junction – Richard & Famous: Level 6 near Event Cinema; Box Brownie Landscape: Valet Parking Lounge level P4 Address: 500 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction, NSW 2022 Dates: 8 May – 22 May 2014 Time: 9.30am – 6pm (Saturday - Wednesday) 9.30am – 9pm (Thursday) 9.30am – 7pm (Friday) URL: www.headon.com.au/ www.facebook.com/HeadOnPhotoFest

STILLS GALLERY

Mary Ellen Mark This is Mark’s first solo exhibition in Australia, and it features some of her most iconic images. Mary Ellen Mark is an iconic photographer, renowned for her work and a very well respected peer in global photography circles. From the haunting portrait of street kid “Tiny” dressed in her Halloween costume, to senior citizens getting down on a dance floor in Luigi's Italian American Club in Miami and the eccentricities of the Indian Circus – Mark’s images are, as she has described them, “full of ironies, often humorous and sometimes sad, beautiful and ugly, loving and at times cruel, but always human.” In addition to these iconic images is a selection of photographs taken in Australia on a National Geographic assignment for the 1988 Bicentennial. These images looked at the indigenous community in Redfern, as well as recent immigrants from places like Lebanon and Vietnam, capturing the diversity of cultures and voices that existed in Australia at the time.  http://www.maryellenmark.com/ http://www.notablebiographies.com/newsmakers2/2006-Le-Ra/Mark-Mary-Ellen.html http://photography.about.com/od/famousphotographers/a/maryellenmarkbiography.htm LISTING INFORMATION Venue: Stills Gallery Address: 36 Gosbell Street, Paddington, NSW 2021 Dates: 7 May – 7 June 2014 Time: 11am to 5pm Wednesday to Saturday URL: www.headon.com.au/ www.facebook.com/HeadOnPhotoFest

ST CANICE CHURCH

Sudarios – Erika Diettes Erika Diettes travelled to different cities in Antioquia (Colombia) to interview women who had been present at the torture and murder of their loved ones. Diettes photographed the women, closely cropped in black and white, at a moment of great vulnerability - all but one with their eyes closed. The resultant twenty photographs were printed on seven feet tall silk panels and form the work 'Sudarios' (shrouds are a burial cloak, a cloth that shrouds the body of the deceased). The work is usually displayed in sacred spaces such as churches and convents with a sound track of a barely audible, sighing female voice. In Sydney, the work will be exhibited at St Canice Church in Potts Point which has a long tradition of working with marginalised people and refugees. Erika will be in Sydney and will talk about her work at St Canice Church. www.erikadiettes.com

Shane and Maggie: An Intimate Look at Domestic Violence – Sara Lewkowicz; presented by Alexia Foundation Domestic violence is largely an invisible crime. We usually only hear it muddled through walls, and we usually only see it manifested in the faded yellow and purple bruises of a woman who “walked into a wall” or “fell down the stairs.” It is rarely limited to one event, and it rarely stops. “Shane and Maggie”, seeks to portray domestic abuse as a process, as opposed to a single incident, examining how a pattern of abuse develops and eventually crests, as well as its short a –and long term – effects of victims, their families, and their abusers.” Excerpt from Sara’s winning proposal (2013 Alexia Student Grant). http://www.alexiafoundation.org/stories/SaraNaomiLewkowicz 14 May - 26 May 2014, 10am-6pm (Mon-Fri), 11am-5pm (Sat) Sunday and Public Holidays (Closed)

Nüwa Re Awakening – Tami Xiang Nüwa Re Awakening: This series reveals the women’s social position in the ancient closed and conservative Chinese history when male dominated the society. According to chinese legend , Nüwa is the goddess who created humans. When the Fire and Water Gods fought and broke the heaven Nüwa used stones with five colours to repair it and gave heaven a stable support by using the legs of a giant turtle. In ancient times, Nüwa was worshipped and females were respected and held in high regard as the nurturers of life. As Chinese civilization evolved, the teachings of Confucius became predominant in Chinese culture and the status of females changed to one of control, Confucianism promoted the requirement for the female to be loyal to one man for the woman’s entire life and created systems to ensure male domination. For this series I chose to incorporate nude as one of the principle elements , it symbolizes the vulnerability and helplessness of females living in a society where control is paramount .The nude is also still a taboo subject in ancient conservative China and so it is also symbolic of my rebellion and rejection of the feudalism system of control. It’s a story of one woman, it also revealed millions of women’s fates in the controlled lives without freedom and rights in the ancient days. 14 May – 26 May 2014; 10am-6pm (Monday – Friday) 11am-5pm (Saturday) Sunday and Public Holidays (Closed)

GAFFA CREATIVE PRECINCT

Personae – Pierre Dalpé ‘Personae’ questions the notion of ‘fixed’ identity and explores the idea that we, as individuals, potentially embody a multitude of personae – that identity is fluid, malleable, and not pre-determined. The Personae series involves a collaborative process where I allow my subjects to embody their alter egos through performing in an invented scenario or narrative within the proscenium arch of my camera frame. My intention with this work is to play with and subvert the aesthetics and traditions of documentary photography, as well as aspects of identity, gender, and performance – to coax viewers into believing false truths, leaving the viewer to question everything contained within the image.

Pierre Dalpé will be in Sydney from 13th May – 5th June for interviews.

14 May – 26 May 2014, 10am-6pm (Monday – Friday) 11am-5pm (Saturday) Sunday and Public Holidays (Closed) www.pierredalpe.com

Butterflies Chapter 2 – Scott Typaldos ‘Butterflies’ is the second chapter of Scott Typaldos’ documentary on mental illness. Before the Kosovo war (1998-1999) the Štimlje psychiatric institute was financed by the Serbian government. After the power change, the new Albanian dominated government financially abandoned the place leaving the infrastructures in decay and the patients from minority ethnic groups without care. The patients, who are for the most part severe psychotics, are left roaming in the institution’s walls and garden with limited hygienic or medical care. The building’s inside walls and sanitary conditions are dilapidated. The only fix constantly distributed are meals and cigarettes which patients regularly fight each other for. The camera was inserted in between the ever vague and fluctuating border separating sanity from insanity. 14 May – 26 May 2014, 10am-6pm (Monday – Friday) 11am-5pm (Saturday) Sunday and Public Holidays (Closed) http://socialdocumentary.net/exhibit/Scott_Typaldos/2307

The Lost Boys Of Sudan – Chris Peken Some 20,000 boys fled their villages in South Sudan when government troops from the north systematically attacked their villages in the late 1980's during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005 with an estimated 2.5 million deaths). It is estimated that as many as a third of them died due to starvation and dehydration, or at the hands of wild animal or enemy soldiers. Their epic journey over thousands of kilometres and three countries “ended” in 1992 when approximately 12,000 of them became the initial inhabitants of the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. In November of 2013 photographer Chris Peken travelled to Kakuma in search of these Lost Boys after hearing stories from the South Sudanese refugee population in Western Sydney. There he met with over forty of the original Lost Boys, and along with Ethiopian refugee journalist Qaabata Boru, documented their stories and created these portraits. 29 May - 9 June 2014, 10am-6pm (Monday–Friday) 11am-5pm (Saturday), Sunday & Public Hol (Closed)

Viver no Meio do Barulho (Living in the Middle of the Noise) – Nicola Dracoulis The title, Viver no Meio do Barulho (Living in the Middle of the Noise), comes from a song written by one of the subjects of this documentary project set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It describes growing up in a world as a young person trying to take charge of their own destiny amid the noise of gunshots and drums, in a world of poverty and inequality. In 2006, Nicola Dracoulis photographed nine young people across four favelas in Rio. Seven years on, she has reconnected with those same people to discover what their lives are like now. Like any group, each person has a different story, some with dramatic events in their journeys, some with more quiet rites of passage. While all eyes are on Brazil with the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, Nicola investigates the rumblings of social and economic change in Brazilian society through the worlds of people who are living through it. http://nicoladracoulis.photoshelter.com/ 29 May - 9 June 2014, 10am-6pm (Monday – Friday), 11am-5pm (Saturday) Sunday and Public Holidays (Closed)

Imagined Histories - Amber McCraig Using a combination of portraiture and still life elements, Amber McCaig recreates an exploration into the idea of identity and imagination. Her work provides an insight into what it is like to live our fantasies in everyday life. Laden with armour, treasure chests, maps and lore, these fantasies show the power of our imagination and what is possible if we dare to dream. http://ambermccaig.tumblr.com/ 29 May - 9 June 2014, 10am-6pm (Monday – Friday) 11am-5pm (Saturday) Sunday and Public Holidays (Closed)

Breeding Ground – Jasmine Poole Jasmine's practice explores a wide range of mediums, predominantly focusing on photomedia, video and installation. Her early work revolved around the possibility of the notion that nothing is ever as it seems. This stemmed from research into different emotional and scientific patterns of memory, and questioning and trying to comprehend the effect that memory recall has on our perceptions of self and place. Her current work has shifted away from the memory process itself to actual narratives contained within memories. In doing so her work has taken on a very personal turn, becoming a process of storytelling. It aims to bring light to lost conversations, identities and voices that are otherwise unheard. http://www.jasminepoole.com.au/ 29 May - 9 June 2014, 10am-6pm (Monday – Friday) 11am-5pm (Saturday) Sunday and Public Holidays (Closed) LISTING INFORMATION Venue: Gaffa Creative Precinct Address: 281 Clarence St, Sydney CBD, NSW 2000 URL: http://gaffa.com.au/  www.headon.com.au/ www.facebook.com/HeadOnPhotoFest

For more than 200 years Catholic organisations have been part of the fabric of Australian society. They teach our children, care for the sick, create homes for the elderly and support the poor. STANLEY STREET GALLERY Boy Stories - Johan Willner

In the series Boy Stories Johan Willner travels back in time, to a place where something happened, to a passing moment fixed and preserved in his consciousness. Johan explores what happened to the memory during the travel of time, how it has changed, what has been preserved and how much that has been added on or been removed. Probing the question - is it for real or just an illusion? Boy Stories is created out of that kind of incomplete consideration, and is an investigation of the childhood memory in the presence, just as much as it is a depiction of life in the past. http://www.johanwillner.com/boy_stories.php LISTING INFORMATION Venue: Stanley Street Gallery Address: 1/52-54 Stanley Street, Darlinghurst Dates: 14 May – 7 June 2014 Time: 11am – 6pm (Wednesday – Saturday) URL: www.headon.com.au/ www.facebook.com/HeadOnPhotoFest/

JUSTICE & POLICE MUSEUM

Photographs from the Police Forensic Archive (1912 – 1948) Curator Peter Doyle describes the exhibition as ʻan intimate, raw and hauntingly beautiful record of the mysterious people and dark places of a Sydney lostʼ. Focusing on the victims, perpetrators and vicinities of crime, the original City of Shadows introduced the world to the museumʼs extraordinary and compelling collection of police forensic photography dating from 1912 to 1948. You will meet thieves, breakers, receivers, magsmen, spielers, urgers, gingerers, false pretenders, hotel barbers, shoplifters, dope users, prostitutes, makers of false oaths and the occasional murderer. New research has solved many of the mysteries surrounding the people and places in these compelling photographs, and the stories that lurk behind the images – sometimes thrilling, sometimes mundane – can now be revealed. http://sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/exhibitions/city-shadows LISTING INFORMATION Venue: Justice & Police Museum Address: Corner Albert and Phillip Streets Sydney 2000 Dates: 1 March – 31 October 2014 Time: 10am – 5pm (Weekends Only) URL: www.headon.com.au/ www.facebook.com/HeadOnPhotoFest/
