I was bursting with pride when we received word that we had passed our rigorous review by veterinary experts from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). The Humane Society of Tampa Bay became the first non-profit animal hospital in the State of Florida to be AAHA-certified. When a hospital has AAHA accreditation, it is considered by the veterinary community to be the gold standard of the industry. Our own Dr. Karla Bard, Director of Medical Operations, led the effort to obtain this distinction. It would not have happened without her leadership and commitment to our organization.

Only 12-15% of animal hospitals in North America have gone through this demanding and time consuming accreditation process with a total of 3,200 accredited practices in the U.S. and Canada. Currently, there are only 18 non-profit hospitals in the country that have received this distinction; our Animal Health Center has now joined this elite group.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay holds itself to a higher standard. Animals are our passion and keeping them healthy through excellent care has always been our number one priority because they deserve nothing less. We also believe that people should not have to turn their pets in to a shelter, or have them euthanized, because they can’t afford veterinary care. Seven days a week we provide affordable, high-quality veterinary care to the public. And, any proceeds from our animal hospital benefit our mission and programs at our shelter.

I am truly fortunate to have such wonderful veterinarians, technicians, receptionists and other staff who commit themselves every day to be the very best and to always help animals in need.

After months of rigorous review by veterinary experts, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s Animal Health Center became Florida’s first non-profit animal hospital to be awarded accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Considered the Gold Standard in the industry, AAHA accreditation involves evaluation on 900 standards of veterinary care.

“We aim to lead the way for the health and well-being of companion animals in our community and beyond,” said HSTB Executive Director Sherry Silk. “Being the first non-profit in our state, and one of only 18 in the nation, to receive AHAA accreditation confirms that we are on the right path.”

Samson was frightened and confused when he found himself back with us after two years with his loving family. They were devastated but had found themselves in a difficult circumstance and felt they had no other choice.

With each day the ache in their hearts grew. Each night, they waited in vain to feel him jump on the bed to snuggle beside them. Meanwhile, Samson was brokenhearted, needing extra comfort and TLC from our staff and volunteers.

Several days after his surrender, the family came to the shelter in tears hoping to get Samson back. They had prayed together and vowed to find a solution, no matter what, so that Samson could come home. “You can’t leave family behind,” said his dad.

When we brought Samson out and he caught sight of his pack, he started screeching. Then, 60 pounds of pure canine love jumped into his daddy’s arms. And that is where he will stay for the rest of his days.

On a normal Tuesday morning in June, Steve Kadelak was about to recycle his Sunday paper when a picture caught his eye in the Pet Pals section of the Tampa Tribune, The orange and white kitty staring back at him looked just like his pet who’d been missing since January! He immediately called our office and asked the adoption manager about a unique mark on his face. When she confirmed that the mark was there, he was ecstatic.

We don't know where Rooney had been since January, but we had recently transferred him from Hillsborough County Animal Services and decided to feature him in Pet Pals; we are so glad we did!

This picture says it all; a soft gaze at his dad, knowing all is finally well. Welcome home, sweet boy.

Janet Saunders has been volunteering with us since 2010. In that time she has given more than 3,600 volunteer hours to our animals in many areas including cat companionship, adoptions, outreach and special events. She is a tremendous help with volunteer orientations and helps to mentor new cat companions.

Janet is also a dedicated and loving foster mom who has helped save the lives of countless kittens. She even organized our first-ever Kitten Shower (this June) which was a fun and immensely successful event.

Her passion for the animals, especially cats, is so valuable to HSTB. We can’t thank her enough!

Lisa, a three-year-old, heartworm positive Pit Bull mix was transferred to us from Hillsborough County Animal Services. After being treated for heartworms she waited nearly three months for a home and, in that time, quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite for her sweet, playful personality.

Whether attending outreach events or teaching younger dogs how to play in our playgroups, Lisa was always a perfect doggie citizen during her stay with us! However, people are often reluctant to adopt Pit Bulls, so she waited.

One day, Alisha came looking for a friend for her dog, Honey, who had been dealing with anxiety issues. She decided that a canine companion might be good for Honey, and Lisa caught her eye. During their meet and greet, the girls acted like they had known each other forever, racing around the play yard and rolling around in the dirt. Alisha couldn’t say no, Lisa had won her over!

Lisa is now a big sister to Honey and helps to comfort her when she gets anxious. As you can see from her go-home photo, Lisa was so happy to be joining this family that she couldn’t contain her kisses!

We adopted "Carley", who we now call Baby or Itty Witty, the first week of February. We decided to get her because our oldest daughter just had her second brain surgery and a kitty is all she wanted while in the hospital. She is the best kitty ever and has settled into our family so wonderfully. She also has one of the most amazing bonds with our daughter Emily. Every night they sleep together and cuddle the whole night. She is a perfect fit and has completed our family.

Her demeanor is one of a kind, my husband and I both grew up with multiple cats, and have never seen anything like Baby. Her favorite thing to play with is her stuffed monkey that she walks around the house with in her mouth. She loves to cuddle and will purr for endless amounts of time when she is with people. She never minds being in the girls’ laps and all around is just the best. Thanks for letting us adopt our family member from you!

We adopted Koa formerly known as “Pongo” this past December and we are so happy we did. Koa has truly been a blessing and it didn’t take long for him to fit in with our family.

He’s my daughter’s best friend and partner in crime and between the two of them they make sure my husband and I stay active. We all love him very much.

I adopted this lovely girl about two weeks ago, and I haven’t been happier. She has brought so much joy in my life. Rin, (formerly Ronnie) was the perfect match, and I fell in love with her the moment I saw her.

My friend recommended going to HSTB after recently adopting their own puppy. I couldn’t have made a better choice. Rin is the smartest puppy I’ve ever met, being a Collie/German mix. I was able to potty train her within a couple days and she has already mastered “SIT!”

My fiance and I adopted Windy at the end of January 2013. We kept her name because nothing else seemed to work. Since then we have moved back home to the Florida Keys and Windy has been our fur baby ever since. We were warned that she would be a one pet girl and for now we wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is very active and likes to play but she also loves her downtime, lounging in the sunlight. She still isn’t a lap kitty but she always has to be near us. I’m glad we were able to make her ours, thanks to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. -Amanda and Daniel Humane Society of Tampa Bay 9


Hillsborough County has designated four public shelters as “Pet-Friendly” as a last resort for residents in dire need. Space is limited, and given on a first-come first-served basis. No reservations are accepted. At public pet-friendly shelters, the pet owner must:

Register when first arriving

Bring proof of current rabies vaccination

Bring a sturdy carrier

Bring enough supplies for their pet(s)

Remain on site with their pet(s) during the storm

If your pet is not current on shots, the Animal Health Center offers affordable vaccines. The Center also offers FREE MICROCHIPS ON SUNDAYS with any veterinary service. Microchipping is one of the best ways to make sure your pets can find their way home to you if lost!

The Center is located at 3809 N. Armenia and is open from 12:00pm–7:00pm on Mondays and 8:30am–3:00pm Tuesday–Sunday. Call 813.870.3304 for more details!

Hurricane Season is here and our pets depend on us to keep them safe!

In the event of a Hurricane you must be prepared to be housebound for several days or, possibly, to evacuate to a pet-friendly shelter. Be sure to have seven days of pet food, water and medications on hand. Also, in the event of an evacuation, pet owners should have a Grab ‘n Go Bag ready containing the following information:

Medical/Vaccination Records

Special medical/behavioral instructions

Picture of your pet, picture of you with your pet

All identification numbers (tag,microchip,etc.)

Emergency contact info for you and your pet

Emergency contact (outside the disaster area)

Owners should also have a pet first aid kit available, bedding, collapsible food/water bowl, 2 extra collars and leashes and a pet carrier.
