The American Legion Posts of Washington State
Dear American Legion Posts,
The citizens of Evergreen Boy's State would like to thank you for the invaluable opportunity to
attend this program. This past week we have learned from legislators, judges, senior staff, junior
staff, and many representatives of real- word politics on Washington State government. Earlier
in the week, we heard that the vision of Evergreen Boy's State is to learn the system and we can
truthfully say we have done just that. This understanding of Washington State government has
molded us into more informed voters and young men – but most importantly, educated citizens
of Washington State. We hope that we have represented our respective sponsoring American
Legion Posts to the high standard that was placed upon as the best of the best. We are forever
changed by this extraordinary program, and we are forever indebted to the American Legion.
Sincerely,
Michael K. Bervell
Governor

Snohomish County Sheriff
Mr. Ty Trenary
Ty Trenary, Snohomish County Sheriff, spoke with the delegates of Evergreen Boys State Monday morning.
What I learned from Mr. Ty Trenary…
“I learned about leadership and how important it is to
connect with the people you are looking out for. I also
leaned how the sheriff has to work with many different
organization to accomplish tasks like rescue missions.”
-Cameron Blecha, City of Juniper
“I felt the sheriff wasn’t really giving a speech but was
just in a regular conversation between himself and the
audience. This helped me be relaxed but attentive and
not get bored. I also liked the large amount of time
allotted for questions from the audience. I felt the
sheriff answered them quite well.”
-Stenn Monson, City of Fir
“After hearing Sheriff Trenary speak, I learned a lot
more about the clear distinction of structure in city,
county and state police forces. Moreover, my eyes
were opened to the potential issues that arise when
these groups work together. For example, the sheriff
referenced both the benefits and drawbacks of the Oso
landslide. This, I believe, was the most valuable
learning experience.”
-Michael Bervell, City of Hemlock

WA Representative 25th District
Mr. Hans Zeiger
Hans Zeiger, Representative from the 25th Legislative District, spoke with the delegates of Evergreen Boys State Tuesday afternoon about State government and how important it is to have new voices take their turn in government.
What I learned from Mr. Hans Zeiger…
“Relationships are the most important aspect of
politics. If one has good relationships and good social
skills, they have a strong chance at doing many things
and gaining support for any government position.”
-Trevor Joireman, City of Hemlock
“The power to be a politician does not come from
yourself but it comes from the people. Becoming a
leader develops from the ability to make personal
connections. Most importantly, Hans referenced how
we should not invest in a bureaucratic government
because it does not respect the people.”
-Michael Bervell, City of Hemlock
“I learned that its easier to oust incumbents at the State
level because money isn’t as important. I also learned
that there is a heavy rivalry between Houses.”
-Conor Cunningham, City of Juniper

Retired Whatcom County Superior
Court Judge
Honorable Steven Mura
The Honorable Steve Mura, retired Whatcom County Superior Court Judge, spoke with the delegates of Evergreen Boys State Wednesday afternoon in regards to the duties of being a Judge and the experiences he has had during his time in office.
What I learned from the Honorable
Steven Mura…
“I learned an unbelievably large amount about the
Court System. Great insight on the life of the lawyer
and the military academy and its benefits. The speaker
was great and I highly value the knowledge of the
courts, common sense, and the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’
when being both a prosecuting attorney or defending
attorney”
- Bradley Rehwaldt, City of Juniper
