Scientificandtechnologicaladvancesinthefieldsofimageacquisition, processing, telecommunications, andcomputergraphicsduringthelastdecade, havecontributed to the emergence of new multimedia,especially3Ddigitaldata.Nowadays,theacquisition,processing, transmission, andvisualizationof three-dimensional objects are a part of possible andrealistic functionalities over the internet. Confirmed3Dprocessingtechniquesexistandalargescientificcommunity hardly works on open problems andnew challenges, including 3D data processing, transmission, fastaccess tohuge3Ddatabases,orcontentsecuritymanagement.
Theemergenceof3Dmediaisalsodirectlyrelatedtotheemergenceofthe3Dacquisitiontechnologies.Indeed,recentadvancesin3Dscanneracquisitionand3Dgraphicsrenderingtechnologiesboostthecreationof3Dmodelarchivesforseveralapplicationdomains.Theseincludearchaeology,culturalheritage,ComputerAssistedDesign(CAD),medicine,3Dfacerecognition,videogames, or bioinformatics. New devices suchas time-of-flight cameras open challenging newperspectiveson3Dsceneanalysisandreconstruction.
Three-dimensionalobjectsarequitemorecomplextohandlethanothermultimediadata,suchasaudiosignals,images,orvideos.Indeed,onlyauniqueandsimple2Dgrid representation isassociated toa2Dimage. All the 2D acquisition devices generate thissamerepresentation(digitalcameras,scannersor2Dmedical systems). Unfortunately (for the users) and
fortunately(forthescientists),thereexistdifferentthree-dimensionalrepresentationsfora3Dobject.Anobjectcanberepresentedona3Dgridlikeadigitalimage,orina3DEuclidianspace.Inthelatercase,theobjectcanbeexpressedbyasingleequation(likealgebraicimplicitsurfaces),byasetof facets representing itsboundarysurfaceorbyasetofmathematicalsurfaces.Onecaneasilyimaginethenumerousopenproblemsrelated to these different representations and theirprocessing, anewchallengefortheimageprocessingcommunity.

Visualization, Perception, and Color
The goal of this conference is to explore the roleof human perception and cognition in the design, analysis, anduseofelectronicmediasystems.Overthe years, it has brought together researchers fromawidevarietyofscientificandtechnicaldisciplines, fromallovertheworld, forarichandlivelyexchangeof ideas. We believe that understanding the humanobserver is fundamental to the advancement ofelectronicmediasystems, andthatadvancesinthesesystemsandapplicationsaredrivingnewresearchintotheperception, andcognitionofthehumanobserver.

Color imaging has historically been treated as aconstant phenomenon well described by threeindependent parameters. Recent advances incomputationalresourcesandintheunderstandingofthe human aspects are leading to new approachesthat extend the purely metrological view towards aperceptualviewofcolorindocumentsanddisplays.Part of this perceptual view is the incorporation ofspatialaspects, adaptivecolorprocessingbasedonimagecontentandtheautomationofcolortasks, tonameafew.
Thisdynamicnatureappliestohardcopydevices, but to an even larger extend to soft-copy displays.Adaptivegamutandtonemapping, dynamiccontrast, adaptivepowerusageandcolormanagementcontinueto support the unprecedented development of thedisplayhardwarespreading frommobiledisplays tolargesizescreens.
This conference provides an opportunity forpresenting, aswellasgettingacquainted, withthemostrecentdevelopmentsincolorimagingtechnologiesandapplications.Focusoftheconferenceisoncolorimageinput, dynamiccolorimageoutputandrendering, colorimageautomation, emphasizingcolorincontextandcolor in images, andon the reproductionof imagesacross local and remote devices. We live in a visual world. The perceived qualityof images is of crucial importance in industrial, medical and entertaining application environments.Developments indigitalprinting, flatpaneldisplays, camera sensors, image processing power, and 3Dimaging are enabling new or enhanced possibilitiesforcreatingandconveyingvisualcontentthatinformsorentertains.Wirelessnetworksandmobiledevicesexpandthewaystoshareimagery.
Thepowerof imaging restsdirectlyon thevisualqualityof the imagesandthesystemsthatproducethem. As the images are generally intended to beviewedbyhumans, considerationoftheroleofhumanvisualperceptionisintrinsictotheeffectiveassessmentofimagequality.
This conference brings together industrial andacademic engineers and scientists who strive tounderstand what makes a high quality image andhow to assess the requirements and performanceof modern imaging systems.
