T wo new exhibits, one at the entrance of the Holocaust Memorial Center and one near the end of the tour, are creating quite a buzz among museum visitors. Poignant and haunting, e Last Kaddish was created by renowned local artists Tony Roko and Bowen Kline. It was donated by Lori and Steven Weisberg, in memory of Lori’s father Joseph Schwartz, as well as her grandparents Jacob and Frymet Schwartz and their nine children. “Just like the man depicted in the painting, my father was the only one leſt alive to say Kaddish (the traditional Jewish mourner’s prayer) for his family,” said Lori, a docent at the Holocaust Memorial Center. “e painting reminds us that in the face of unimaginable horror, people tried with all their might to steadfastly maintain their religion. So while this magnificent piece of art depicts one moment during this dark chapter of history, it is also reflective of countless other times where despite everything, Jews did the best they could to keep their faith and tradition.” Many of the Holocaust Memorial Center’s exhibits utilize multimedia content such as sound and video to convey the tragedy and lessons of the Holocaust. One of our most popular videos, especially with school groups, is about responsibility. It helps visitors answer the question, “What can I do to prevent a future genocide?” It touches upon our responsibility to make the world a better place, to make ethical decisions in a moral atmosphere and to be involved with the world around us. To contextualize this, we have installed an important new exhibit about contemporary genocides to the area surrounding the video. Visitors can see that genocide continues today and that action is still needed. Inspiring our visitors to act is the aim of Nelson and Susan Hersh and their children Michelle, Jessica, and Rebecca, whose generosity made this new exhibit possible. e Hersh and Weisberg families hope their giſts will set an example for the community of activism and philanthropy. Educating the Next GenerationYour Generosity at Work

Each year, nearly 50,000 students visit the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus. Their

token admission fees do not cover the cost of operating the Center. Your gifts are what make their visits possible. Thank you!The geographic diversity of our visitors is astounding! During the 2013-2014 school year, groups visited from these Michigan cities, including some you may not even have known existed:

Thanks to your support, students  from all over Michigan are learning why they must fight

prejudice and stand up for the rights of others.

We are one of only 11 sites in the United States selected to receive a sapling from the tree outside of Anne Frank’s hiding place that she wrote about in her diary.

The sapling is planted in the garden.

Enhancing Your Museum Experience For a museum to stay relevant, it must

keep up with the latest technology. This year, we have upgraded our technology to improve our visitors’ comfort and experience.

Thanks to the generosity of our docent Janice Billmeyer and her husband Christopher, we have implemented a new audio tour guide system. Now, even when we have 200 schoolchildren on simultaneous tours, each student can hear every word spoken by the docent. We can accommodate up to seven tours, each with up to 30 participants. Our docents are pleased that they can speak in a moderate tone and every visitor can hear clearly without any crosstalk.

Speaking about crosstalk, another of our dedicated and generous docents, Michael Liebowitz, saw interference between groups as a problem with the layout of our galleries, so he made a contribution to install sound-control materials in them.

When they recognized a problem, these two docents made the means available to creatively solve that problem. All future visitors, especially school groups, will benefit from their generosity.

You, too, can help us improve, expand and grow YOUR Holocaust Memorial Center by being part of a solution to make the best experience happen for each and every visitor; just ask us – together we can help perfect the world through education – we will apply your contribution to a problem seeking a solution. Dear Holocaust Memorial Center,Thank you for teaching me what went on

during the Holocaust. I learned a lot, such

as that many Christians hid Jewish people

because they thought that what Hitler was

doing was wrong. Like Miep hid Anne Frank and her family. In addition, I learned

about the Jewish religion and all the Jewish

people who won Nobel Prizes. I never knew Albert Einstein was Jewish. Now that

I know what can happen, I will try to make

a difference and accept everyone as they are, no matter what religion or race. I may

be small, but I could start a chain reaction.

All that matters is that everyone is the same

on the inside.

Sincerely,Marianna

so it was common practice to eat only American prepared food, under American supervision. Once, she disguised herself in the maid’s clothes to go with her to a local beer garden, as Americans were not welcomed in

Germany. On numerous other occasions, she went on excursions all over war-torn Europe.

Ms. Tryon worked diligently during the day in the half blown up court house in Nuremberg and then she typed her notes at night, often until 2 a.m. She told her

children she took notes when Hermann Goering and the other defendants spoke.

She called the defendants “arrogant” and “lacking humanity” and she felt that they thought they had “done nothing wrong.” She saw trainloads of incriminating evidence brought to the courthouse that did not allow the defendants to deny the allegations made against them because they, themselves, had signed the documents and orders. Even though she did not like to talk about her experiences in Nuremberg, she requested that her children “make sure that people know that this really happened.”

Her son, John Bond, says of her time when she returned to Michigan, “Most people in their community had no idea of what she had seen or where she had been. She was ‘just a housewife’ raising four children in Clio.” A

A Michigan Eyewitness to the Nuremberg TrialsOne of our most exciting recent acquisitions is

the papers of Ruth Tryon, secretary to Chief Justice Robert H. Jackson and a court reporter at the International Military Tribunal trials in Nuremberg at which leading Nazis were indicted on charges of crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Ms. Tryon, whose children generously donated her photos, documents and personal notes to us, lived in Clio, Michigan. Her papers give us an inside look at the IMT from the viewpoint of a participant in the most important trials of the 20th Century. In the mid-1940s, fun-loving Ruth Tryon became bored with her work at A C Spark Plug and decided to apply for overseas service. She had no legal experience but said that she did. She passed the test, and was shipped to Nuremberg, where she was housed with 23 other women and had the services of a maid. She ate in a mess hall, escorted by a guard for security purposes. U.S. civilians were always worried that they would be poisoned,

Kindertransport: How Good People can Make a Difference In 1939, in the nine months leading up to World War II, 10,000

children were sent from Germany and Nazi-occupied countries to safety in England in a rescue effort that came to be known as the Kindertransport. These children, who stayed with foster families and in other accommodations during the war, were often the only member of their families to survive the Holocaust. At the Holocaust Memorial Center, we memorialize this story of the best and worst of humanity by displaying the Kindertransport Association’s memory quilts on permanent exhibit. Three large quilts and two smaller

ones contain a total of 65 squares, each created by a Kindertransport participant. Our visitors can push buttons adjacent to the quilts to hear what each square represents.

In Czechoslovakia, 669 children were rescued by Sir Nicholas Winton, who single-handedly raised the money to aid these displaced young girls and boys. About 6,000 people in the world today owe their lives to him. Sir Nicholas, who recently turned 105 years old,

is a true hero of our times. We are very proud to tell this important story. A

Join us at the Holocaust Memorial Center on Wednesday, August 27 at 7 p.m. for an inspiring program about how one man can make a difference, presented by Sir Nicholas’ son Nick Winton.
