Influence everyday lives

Joggobot is a flying quadcopter that accompanies social joggers during their jogs.

RMIT researchers use Joggobot to ask the question of how (and if) robots should support individuals when they exercise.

Joggobot is able to track the position of the jogger via a built-in camera and tag detection software to help researchers to understand the interactions between a jogger and a robot.

This software turns the previously human-controlled quadcopter into an autonomous flying robot that reacts to the jogger’s actions.

Change Lives Through Research

Divine inspiration

Architects are accustomed to site inspections, but a visit from the Pope was a once-in-a-lifetime honour for the design team untangling the mysteries of Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece, la Sagrada Família.

Bullet-resistant wool softens the blow

Wool is soft, yielding and not traditionally used for stopping bullets. Two RMIT academics are blending Kevlar and wool to create an innovative bullet-resistant fabric.

Make a real difference with a research degree.

Be challenged and inspired by life-changing research discoveries.

To start your career in research:

1. Complete your bachelor degree with high grades.

2. Complete an honours degree or a master degree by research.

3. If you achieve high grades in your honours degree or master degree by research, you can continue your research in a doctorate (often called a PhD). This involves four years of research under the supervision of a senior researcher.

What’s the difference: honours or masters?

An honours degree is an extra year of your bachelor degree which involves independent work on a major research project.

A master degree by research also involves a major research project, but is taken over two years and is an additional degree to your bachelor degree.

Tuition fees for degrees and associate degrees

Commonwealth supported places (CSP)

A Commonwealth supported place (CSP) is a place at university where the tuition fee is jointly paid by you and the Commonwealth Government. Your share of the fee, called the student contribution, is set by the government and is determined by the discipline areas you are studying. This table shows a student’s annual fee for a full-time study load in 2013.

Student contribution band Maximum student contribution for a place in 2013

Band 1: humanities, behavioural science, social studies, education, clinical psychology, foreign languages, visual and performing arts, nursing

$5868

Band 2: mathematics, statistics, computing, built environment, other health, allied health, science, engineering, surveying, agriculture

$8363

Band 3: law, accounting, administration, economics, commerce, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science

$9792

If you undertake more or less than a full-time study load, or if you study courses from a combination of the above categories, you will be charged the proportionate student contribution.

HECS-HELP

If you pay all or part ($500 or more) of your student contribution up front you receive a 10% discount. Alternatively, you can defer payment through the HECS-HELP loan scheme if you meet the eligibility criteria. Your HECS-HELP repayments commence when you reach the minimum income threshold. If you are a permanent resident (other than humanitarian visa holder) or a New Zealand student, you must pay your student contribution up front and you are not eligible for a discount. To learn more about HECS-HELP visit www.studyassist.gov.au to obtain a copy of the Information for Commonwealth Supported Students booklet.

Tuition fees for TAFE programs—certificate, diploma and advanced diplomas

The tuition fees you pay depend on whether you are offered a state government-subsidised place or a full-fee place, based on the eligibility criteria.

VictorianGovernment-subsidisedplaces

Tuition fees for a government-subsidised place vary according to each program. For a full list of program fees for a government-subsidised place visit www.rmit.edu.au/programs/fees/tafe2013 .

You will be offered a government-subsidised place if you meet the eligibility criteria. Your eligibility for a government-subsidised place will depend on your citizenship, age, prior education (Australian qualifications only) and the number of programs you are studying in the current year. To check if you are eligible, visit the ‘TAFE eligibility for a government-subsidised place’ web page at www.rmit.edu.au/programs/apply/tafe/eligibility and use the TAFE eligibility calculator.

At RMIT competition for programs can be strong, with many eligible applicants competing for a limited number of places. So when you apply via an equity access scheme it means that you may receive a boost to your position in the selection process, if you are eligible.

RMIT’s equity access schemes recognise the impact of circumstances or disadvantage on previous education and pathways, and encourage participation across RMIT’s diploma, degree and postgraduate research programs.

102

Page 103: 2014 Degree and Diploma Guide - RMIT University · 25 RMIT Flight Training Open Day—Point Cook December 2013 18 RMIT Change of Preference Expo ... engineering, architecture, education,

Equity access schemes allow additional consideration in selection, or priority access, if you are:

» a year 12 student at a Schools Network Access Program (SNAP) school » an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student.

You can also apply for additional consideration if you:

» are living with a disability, long-term medical illness and/or mental-health condition » are from a rural or regional area » have disadvantaged financial circumstances » are from a non-English speaking background » have difficult circumstances (family or background) » are mature age » are of an under-represented gender in the program you are applying for (specific programs only) » are applying for a postgraduate by research program.

Who can apply for RMIT’s equity access schemes?

To apply for equity access you need to be applying to study one of the following:

» a degree, associate degree or TAFE program (certificate IV and above only) » a postgraduate by research program at RMIT University,

and be

» an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or » an Australian Permanent Resident, or » an Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder.

PathwaysPathways provide opportunities for students to transfer from one program to another.

It’s another way of getting to where you want to go.

Different levels of study at RMIT mean you can explore more than one way of getting the qualification you want.

You could also receive recognition for your existing skills and knowledge. Completed TAFE qualifications and associate degrees can be credited towards a degree and, alternatively, partly completed degree studies may be accredited to a TAFE diploma or advanced diploma.

The following table outlines pathways between RMIT qualifications
