Session E: The state of environmental degree programs and the growth of separate sustainability degrees at community colleges (Session Leader: TBD) CCAP members will discuss various issues in groups and share the outcomes with one another. Importantly, the group will focus on the outcomes of the discussions. For example, can CCAP prepare a one-pager that can be handed off to their academic leadership and to encourage them to create or expand upon these programs? It would be really great to have something that says simply:

Here are the national trends – this is real, it is here and it is not going away

Here are the key contenders – they’re already doing this. Some Questions to consider

What should comprehensive environmental curricula for the 21st century look like? Integrating climate change adaptation and mitigation, socio-environmental synthesis, and multiple scientific and cultural perspectives

Are we satisfied with how our current curricula address these issues? Are there environmental challenges or learning outcomes we are

potentially neglecting when we focus on climate change? What if anything distinguishes an environmental from a sustainability

degree? To what degree should we integrate more sustainability, resiliency,

diversity, adaptation and mitigation into existing degree programs? What are other ways to invigorate curricula to resonate with today’s

students? Will these efforts at curriculum revision be a burden or opportunity? Finally, how do we enact these potential changes while maintaining the

strengths of our existing curricula: what are the additional resources demands and where should we start thinking about funding for these resources? This part of the discussion will continue in the session F breakout on “Marketing Interdisciplinary Environmental Programs as a coherent field of study nationally”.
