Gene never lost his love of the movies and especially the movies of the 1950’s. My favorite photo of Genewas taken lastyearata3DFilmFestival inHollywood.Wewereata screeningofUniversal’s1950’s classic Wings of The Hawk and Gene pretty much levitated off the ground because of a personal appearance by star Julia Adams,who kindlymet and signed autographs for anyonewhowantedtomeether.Foranyonewhoreallyknewhim,thelookonhisfaceispureGene.

Eugene Amodeo was so identified as the face of Universal Films Canada for so many years thatpeopleforgetabouthisearliercareersintheindustry.HisfirstmovieexperienceseeingWaltDisney’s“Cinderella”atage6startedalife-longloveandpassionforthemovies.HisdeterminationtogetintothebusinessinanywaypossibleledhimtohisfirstjobintheFamousPlayers’AuditDept,laterjoiningParamount Pictures as an accounting assistant before moving on to National General Pictures where hefinallygothischancetobecomeabooker.GenelatermovedtoAstralFilms,whereherosetoSalesManagerbeforethefatefulcallfromUniversalPicturesin1980.

FewpeopleinourindustryeverbecamesoidentifiedwiththeircompanyasEugene.Asalifelongfilmlover,helovedboththeshowandthebusinesspartofshowbusiness.TheUniversalLunchbecameanannualtraditionatShowCanada,asEugenedonnedavarietyofcostumesovertheyearstopromoteUniversal’supcomingline-upofhits.Nocostumeorstuntwasconsideredtoooutrageousifitcoulddraw attention to a particular film. From Undercover Brother (my favorite), to Cinderella Man, toRiddick,Genealwaysdrewlotsoflove&laughterfromconventionattendees.Inlateryears,itbecameacarefullyguardedsecretastowhichfilmorcharacterGenewasgoingtohighlightuntilthedayofthelunch – once again proving what a true showman was buried inside.

Gene didn’t just love the business; he also loved the people in our business. Many of his closest friends were from the industry; some as travel companions, some as poker buddies and some as just plain friends. His heart of goldmeant he could always be counted on for 100% supportwhenever thePioneersapproachedhim(andUniversalFilms).(WhileUniversalalwayssupportedthePioneerGolfTournament,thereisnoexistingrecordthatGeneeverplayedgolfwithus.)

2014P ioneer of the YearP hil MayAs a member of the third generation of my family in the Motion Picture industry, it is a little hardtosayexactlywhenIstartedinthebusiness.My parents were running a theatre in the small townofManvillewhenIwasborn.Welivedinanapartment behind the screen and my mother tells me she rocked my carriage with her foot while sellingticketsattheboxoffice.Soyousee,Ineverhad a chance!

AlifeintheMotionPictureindustrywasmy destiny.

Somuchofmyearlylifewashappilyspentinmovietheatres.Iremembersummernightswhenallfivekidswereputintoourpajamas,loadedupintothestationwagonandtrundledofftothe StardustDriveIninWainwrightwherewewatchedthe movies and my parents ran the theatre. Ourbusinesshasgonethroughsomanychangessince those idyllic years and has been counted out bythefinancialpunditscountlesstimes.Butwehave been able to adapt, weather the storms and here we all are in 2014.

Imanagedmyfirsttheatreattheageof seventeen.Icouldn’tevengointotheauditorium(legally)ifwewereplayingarestrictedpicture.

IhaveservedontheBoardofDirectorssince1995and was honored to be elected President in 2002 and am happy to serve in that capacity to this day. OneofmydutiesasPresidentisbeingoneofthefiveTrustFundTrustees.Thatpositionallowsmetoseefirsthand,allofthegoodthatgetsdonebytheTrustFundyouallsupport.

Inanindustryassmallasoursitisimpossibletoemphasizeenoughhowimportanttheanonymityof our work is. When someone is in need, the last thing they should have to worry about is their issues being made public.

IcannotexpresshowmuchthePioneersmean tomeandthehonorIamreceivingtonightis precious beyond words. The epitaph on my Grandfathersgravestonereads“ServiceBeforeSelf”.Iamsureheislookingdowntonightwith a big smile and a twinkle in his eye.

Joe Peixoto was born in Faial,asmall islandinthemid-Atlanticarchipelagoofthe Azores,Portugal.Duetoavolcaniceruptionwhichdestroyedasubstantialpartoftheisland, JoeandhisfamilyimmigratedtotheUnitedStatesatage7. HelivedinSanJose,CAuntilmovingtoLosAngelesin1971toattendUniversityofCaliforniaatLosAngeles. Whileattendingschool,JoeworkedasanusherandthenAssistantManageratthevariouscinemasinWestwood. 

Joe launched his career in  the Motion Picture Industry in 1975 at the Los Angeles branch of United ArtistsDistribution. From 1975 to 1980, Joe held various distribution positions including booking, sales and salesmanageratbothUnitedArtistandtheAssociatedFilmDistributorsworkingfrombranchofficesinLosAngeles,SanFranciscoandNewYork.In1980,Joe’scareerpath turnedtowardsexhibitionjoiningMannTheatresasafilmbuyerinboththeirLosAngelesandDallasoffices.AfterabriefstintindistributionatDeLaurentisEntertainmentGroup,itwasbacktoexhibitionatMetropolitanTheatreswhereJoecontributedtoallaspectsofthebusiness.

In1992ParamountStudiostappedJoetobecomePresidentoftheirCanadianExhibitionchain:FamousPlayers.MovingtoTorontoopenedupnewhorizonsandopportunitiesbothpersonallyandprofessionally.WhileatFamous,Joedevelopedstrategiestoexpandandtransformtheoldertheatredominatedcompanytoamodernmultiplexcircuit.Heintroducedinnovativedesignthatfocusedonretail,deliveredincreasedmarketshareandincreasedcashflowforownerParamount/Viacom.Personally,JoeandhisfamilyembracedCanadaastheirhome.

Today, RealD is the world’s largest 3D Platform comprising of over 25,000 screens in more than 60 countries withmorethan1000exhibitorpartners.JoeretiredhispositioninAprilof2014.

While semi-retired and enjoying more timewith his familyandhispersonalpursuits, Joecontinuestostayactiveintheindustry. Carol started her career in 1968workingparttimeatParamount,FamousPlayersandCanfilmfilmServices.From1970to1980,sheworkedatParamountPictureswhereshelearnedallaspectsofbookingfilms.

Inlate80's,shewasofferedajobatBellviewFilmsasBranchManager.ThenAstralFilmsmergedwithBellevue.Ayearafterthat,CriterionboughtoutBellevueandshewasmadeWesternBranchManagerforBC-Alberta-Saskatchewan-ManitobaandNWT.Iheldthispositionfor20yearsuntil2003 in which she retired.

The Picture Pioneers of B.C.would not allowwomen to golf in their tournaments. They finallyrelentedandmyself,DeanJoyal,PauletteKindandLydiaNormanwereonthefirstwoman’steam.Withourluck,itpouredandeveryballwehitsankinthemud.WeweredeterminedtofinishandwestayedoutuntilwedidfinishwhileeveryonewasdressedupandenjoyingtheircocktailsatUBC.Wehave golfed on the tournament ever since.

OneprojectIwasveryproudofwasprogrammingandputtingVHStapesonthebusesinCanada.ItwasaverysuccessfulVentureatthattime.AlsoanotherprojectthatIenjoyedwasbookingforthearmedforcesandchoosingthefilmstosend.

IamproudtobeapartofthisindustryandgivebacktothePioneersthathasgivensomuchtoourmembers.

Locally,Ihavebeenoncommitteestoothercommunityactivities as well. I have served for 11 years in theDelta Auxiliary for the Delta Hospital andwas headcoordinator for the Hospital Thrift Store. Also havebeen amember of Beta Sigma Phi for 29 years andhave supported their service projects.

Carol is proud of the accomplishments of her children. Sandy,whoisaPioneeranddidworkfortwentyyearsintheindustry.HersonDavidisaDoctorofChemistryandOceanography.

Tony sailed to CanadafromhisnativeItalyin1961;ayoungmanonhisownwithjust$100inhispocketandthedreamofmakingalifeforhimselfinToronto.JobopportunitiesinTorontoforanyonepossessingnoEnglishlanguageskillswerescarce,butTonyworkedsteadilyuntilonedayhenoticeda“part-timeUsherwanted”signinfrontofhislocalmovietheatre.AsapassionatefilmenthusiastraisedonadietofclassicAmericanfilmsdubbedinItalian,andItalianNeorealistfilms,fromdeSicatoRosseliniandVisconti,heexcitedlyimaginedthepossibilities.Afewminuteslaterthejobwashis;thusbeganhisforayintotheCanadianmoviebusiness.Bydiligentlymemorizingmoviedialogue,Tony’sEnglishimprovedremarkably—infact,nowsomemightevendescribehimas “loquacious.”

Throughouthisremarkablecareer,Tonyhasmovedseamlesslybetweentheatricalexhibitionanddistribution.HispassionforfilmandhisuncannyunderstandingoffilmaudiencesledhimtothepositionofakeyfilmbuyerfortheJ.ArthurRankOrganization—whichultimatelybecameCineplexOdeonin1980.AsVice-PresidentandGeneralManagerof20thCenturyFox,Canadaheoversawthe theatrical release of numerous blockbusters, including Die Hard and Home Alone.Hislife-longloveof independentfilm ledhim toAllianceReleasing in1990,wherehe servedas SeniorVicePresidentandGeneralManageroftheatricaldistribution,overseeingtheextraordinarilysuccessfulrelease of indie hits such as Trainspotting, The English Patient, and Pulp Fiction.

Tony returned to his exhibition roots in 1999 as SeniorVice-President, Film at CineplexOdeonCorporation.Followingthathebroughthisexpertisetoseveralboutiquedistributioncompanies,includingDFilmsandCapriReleasing,whichunderhisleadership,acquiredSarahPolley’sOscar-nominatedfilmAway From Her at script stage. Currently, Tony runs his own independent consulting agency,T.C.FilmMarketingandDistribution;hisadviceisfrequentlysoughtoutonfilmacquisitions,scriptdevelopmentanddistributionandmarketinginitiatives. 

Tony’shonoursanddistinctionsincludeanappointmentin2004bytheCanadianHeritageMinistertoathree-memberpanelofexpertstostudytheissueofCanadians’accesstopublicbroadcastingservices in languages other than English andFrench. He has served on international film festivaljuries, including the premiere of Spazio Taorminaat the Taormina Film Festival, as well as the DubaiInternationalFilmFestivalwhereheservedasoneofthreejudgesforTheDubaiFilmConnection(DFC),theco-productionmarketofDIFF.

Butnolonger.Iwasgoingtobemakingadsthatappearedinsectionsofthenewspaperthatpeopleactuallyread.Iwasgoingtobemakingadsformoviesthatpeoplehadheardof.Iwouldn'thavetoexplainanything.OrsoIthought.

Alsoforyoungpeople,anewspaperissomethingpeopleusedtousetofindoutwheremoviesareplaying.)IthenhadtoexplainthatIdidn'tdesignthead.ThatwasdonebysomeoneinLosAngeles.ButIdidsizetheadtothespecificationsoftheTorontoStarandmakesuretheinkwouldn'tcomeoffonyourfingersifyoutouchedit.ItwasatthispointIrealizedproductionwasnotthesexypartofentertainmentadvertising.Forthenext16years,myjobwouldbetobringotherpeople'seffortstolifeandmakethemlookasgoodastheycanbe.You'veseenexamplesofmyworkinmagazines,newspapers,wrappedaroundasubwaycar,onthesideofabuildingonBloorStreet, intheHoltRenfrewwindow,ontheGardinerExpresswayorifyouGoogle"TorontoSun"and"Brüno".Youjustdidn'tknow it was my work.

ItwasalsowhenIwasatMIJOthatIwasgiventheassignmenttodesignaneditionofthePioneerAwardsBook. PuttingtogetherthebookmeantIhadtocarefullyreadeverybioandeverystoryabouttheCanadianPicturePioneers.Igottoknowagreatdealabouttheorganization,whattheydid for people andwhat they stood for. It was alsoevident from reading the bios, that members happily dedicatetheirfreetimeandexpertisetohelptheCPPin any way they can. After reading about what theawardrecipientshaddone,IdecidedtheAwardsBookwouldbemycontributiontohelp.Idon'tconsidermycontribution to be on the same level as what others havedone. I'mnot beinghumble – I've just read allthebios.Iknowpeoplecontributemorethanme.Myjob is to give those people a keepsake as recognition of the efforts they have made within our industry.To showcase them and let everyone know what they have done for theCanadianPicturePioneers.Or toputitanotherway;tobringotherpeople'seffortstolife and make them look as good as they can be.

In1939agroupofmovieindustryexecutives gatheredtorememberthepassingofafriend.JackCohn, one of the founding partners of Columbia Pictures, was concerned that it only seemed to be funerals that brought industry friends together. Motivated by this thought, Cohen and a group of industrypeersstartedthePicturePioneersInc.; anorganizationtobringpeopleintheindustry together for fellowship and friends willing to help eachotheroutintimeofneed.Inthebeginningmembership was restricted to only those who had been in the industry for 25 years.

Many of the original members had help to start the majorstudiosinHollywood.Inthefirstyearover200other industry members joined, including some Canadians,amongthempioneertheatreexhibitor OscarHansonandJohnFitzgibbons,wholaterbecamepresidentofFamousPlayers.ThesemenbroughttogethertheirfriendsClairHagueandRayLewistoworkonformingaCanadianequivalentandbytheendof1940ratifiedacharterformingTheCanadianPicturePioneers.Inthebeginningyears,

it became obvious that the need for help would increasebeyondwhathadbeenfirstcontemplated,and that formal fundraising plans would have to be developedtomeetsuchdemands.AnimportantfirststepinthoseplanswouldbetoapplytotheCanadianIncomeTaxDepartmenttoregisterwhatwould become the Canadian Picture Pioneers Trust Fundasaqualifiedcharitywiththerighttoissuereceiptsforincometaxpurposes.

Ittookuntil1947,butthisallcametogetherwiththe Trust Document that we still operate under today stating that; “The Canadian Picture Pioneers TrustFundshallbeusedandoperatedexclusivelyasacharitablefundandnotforthebenefitorprivategainorprofitofanypersons,orofthePioneersandshall be used solely for the relief of needy, poor or indigent persons generally throughout Canada and more particularly for the relief of any needy, poor or indigent persons who have been or are employed or were a part of the motion picture industry, or any affiliatedindustry.”FromthebeginningtheTrusteesstruggled to build up a sustaining capital fund.

Eachyear,littlebylittle,withthegenerous support of Pioneer members and supporting companies the fund has grown but the Pioneers still need your assistance. Please remember to donate to the Picture Pioneers with regular annual contributions, in memory donations and planned giving through insurance and estate planning.
