OCTORARO ANGUSSustainable Genetics – Sustainable Agriculture

The future is now

As many of you know Sam was on oxygen at the 2013 sale due to his four wheelerfiasco the week before. It was only with the assistance of Embrook Angus, saleauctioneer Mark Swope and crew and two neighbors, Jim Reid and Bob Crotts; thatSherrill retained her sanity, the cattle work was done, new barn yard built and the salecame off without a hitch. Sam remained on oxygen and pain medication until the firstof January. He is fine now but readily admits that he will never be young again. And,yes he still rides side saddle. You know the adage, “You can’t teach an old dog newtricks”…….

Sam and Sherrill have continued to work on their retirement property, and the housewill finally be finished by sale time. They plan to move following their 19th sale thisNovember. The rail fence surrounding the new house and front pastures survived thesnow last winter without one vehicle crashing into it after five crashes the winter of2012. The boulders that are now in front of each post may have something to do withit. The Breezewood property is for sale, but they will continue to keep some cattlethere until it sells. Please note their new address and phone number in this catalog. They do not wish to lose contact with any of you.

Sherrill’s last day of work as Vice President of Quality Improvement/Risk Management/Patient Safety at their local hospital was Friday, January 3, 2014. Both she and Samhave adjusted to this change and Sam is thrilled to have an “official gate opener”. Sheenjoys having more time on the farm. This year they did not have one episode of pinkeye in the cattle. Sam says this was the best AI breeding season ever as he did not haveto get up early to breed before Sherrill left for work or after dark when she returned onlate evenings.

Sam continues to indulge Sherrill and Beth on the tanbark trail. Several years agoSherrill bought a Guernsey heifer, Bella, that has produced a daughter, Bailey, and thisyear delivered a bull calf during the local county fair which was the main attraction inthe dairy barn. Beauford has been retained for breeding purposes. Bella was GrandChampion at the Maryland State Fair in 2013 and Honorable Mention Senior Championin 2014. She was fourth in her class at the All-American show in Harrisburg, PA thispast September and they plan to show her at the Livestock Exposition in Louisville,KY in November. In keeping with their Angus breeding philosophies, Bella is small instature and continues to have a terrific udder and she scored Excellent on 10/14/14.Beth’s Misty Meadows Guernsey cattle continue to do well on the local and nationalshow circuit with multiple junior champion heifer and junior best three awards thisyear. She won the All-American Junior Best Three Females award in 2013 along witha Reserve All American and one Honorable Mention. Beth and Chris Reichard workhard to breed and raise quality Guernseys along with their Octoraro Epiphany Angusherd.

This fall Sam, along with EM Brook Angus, did some invitro embryo work withreversed sorted semen through Trans Ova. You will see some of these unique embryosin the sale offering this year.

Otherwise, you will see few changes to this introduction to Octoraro Angus. A thirdgeneration Angus breeder, Sam has carved a niche in the competitive world of beefcattle breeding. After serving in Vietnam, Sam traveled throughout the U.S., visitingAngus breeders, selling semen and doing sale preparation work before starting hisown breeding program in Chester County, PA.

In 1990, Sam moved the cattle to a rugged, 153-acre farm in Mattie, near Breezewood. The grassy hillsides are ideal for intensive rotational grazing and the woods providewinter shelter. Hay from neighboring farms supports the 150 head of Angus throughthe winters. Seventy to eighty calves are born each year through natural cover andartificial insemination.

After moving to Bedford County, Sam met Sherrill, a local woman with a Guernseydairy background. The first public sale of Octoraro Angus females was in 1994. Samand Sherrill married in 1996. They have worked together producing a unique sustainableherd of pure pedigree Angus cattle.

The Wylies breed cattle from a different angle than most breeders today. The cattlesurvive on pasture and hay year-round without supplementation from corn, other grainsor concentrates, and their stock are derived from pure foundation bloodlines. Theyvalue traits, such as maternal efficiency and longevity, which they believe has beenlost in many modern breeding programs that emphasize meat production at the expenseof these characteristics. Sam and Sherrill got back to the basics and raise cattle thatthrive on low-input, sustainable grassland farming. They use minimal fuel andequipment to process the hay.

Their breeding practices have found a wide market, with their time-tested seed stocksought by Angus breeders throughout the United States and Canada. They are breedingproducer-friendly cattle for farmers who want to get back to the pure, breeder-typeAngus of long ago. Tallgrass Beef Company Preferred Genetics added Octoraro Angusto their list of acceptable genetics in 2007. This distinction is attributed to the OctoraroAngus cattle being bred for maternal efficiency and longevity. In 2008, the Pa. AngusAssociation and the Pa. Cattlemen’s Association named them Seed Stock Producer ofthe Year.

Years ago Jim Lingle, while at Wye Plantation, mentored Sam, causing him to believein the goodness of the Wye maternal program. The Wylies purchased the rare, uniquegene pool of the Newport Farm Wye based cattle in 2005. They have not made radicalchanges in these cows, but have bred them to be more consistent and predictable byutilizing semen from the old time tested Wye bulls. Some of the progeny of theseanimals are offered this year. Sam has been fortunate through the years to have someof the best breeders in the nation mentor him, which instilled in him his values andgoals. His main goal continues to be preserving the maternal goodness and purity ofthe Angus breed. This type of disciplined breeding program enables the Wylies toshare both the Wye genetics and their own homebred gene pool. Sam enjoys mentoringthe next generation of breeders.

Years ago, Sam coined the term, Genetic Seed Saver, as the title for their sale. The termsums up what Octoraro Angus is all about; preserving the original, traditional type of

Angus cattle. They have not perused the modern, high tech, scientific improvementprocess that so many have engaged in here in the USA. Sam says that breeding cattleis an art, which should be used for genetic damage control. They refer to their style ofbreeding as pure-breeder type. They do not expect their cattle to be everything toeverybody. They have concentrated on the cow, maternal efficiency and least costproduction, rather than the terminal growth and carcass traits that are often antagonisticto what they are trying to accomplish.

The Wylies take their job as your seedstock supplier seriously. They do not continuouslyoutcross their gene pool for bigger, better numbers. Through line breeding and tightbreeding, they feel that they can breed more predictability, consistency and prepotencyinto their female lines. With the turmoil surrounding genetic defects in the Angusbreed the past few years, and the possibility of more coming, they are pleased thatthere have been no defects found within their gene pool. They believe that their job isto design and create females that will work for the long haul, up to twenty years ofage. Sam often jokingly states, “There is only one thing we need more of in Anguscattle and that is more Angus.”

For the sixth year, we welcome consignments from Octoraro Epiphany, New Paris,PA, and Em Brook Farm, Schellsburg, PA, to our annual sale. These cattle reflect purebreeder type genetics developed under low input production models. Many of thesecattle descend from cows purchased from Octoraro Angus and continue to carry thesame great bloodlines. We have purchased cattle back, including the 404 cow thatsold to Sinclair Cattle Company for $10,000 six years ago.

Come early on Saturday, November 15, 2014, to view the sale offering of the entire2010 crop of Octoraro Angus spring calving females, multiple fall calving cows withcalves at side or due shortly after sale day, rare semen and the sexed embryos. Or,call to make an appointment to view the cattle prior to sale day. This is an excellent setof cows that are maternal, trouble free foundation genetics. The cattle will not gothrough a traditional sale ring. A complimentary lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.The sale will start promptly at 12:30 p.m. in the tent. Sam and Sherrill look forwardto welcoming you to their Nineteenth Genetic Seed Saver Sale. The Wylies wouldlike to once again thank you, their valued customers, friends, family and neighborsfor your continued interest in and support of their program. A special thanks to family, friends and the consigners that help throughout the year, particularly last November. The Wylies sincerely believe that as they go about their life work that they are beingguided by a great power from above, for which they continue to be thankful.

Octoraro Delia 855 is a 16 year old cow that belongs to brother, Jim. She spent the firstfour years of her life here and then was sold. She was a playmate to our keeper granny860 that is still going strong. When the original buyer retired, 855 ended up with Jim. Wesaw her in late September at the Blue Ridge Cattle Association and Northern Virginia AngusAssociation annual meeting at Lazy Lane, in Virginia. Jim had 855 in a display pen with herfemale offspring showing four generations. 855 is the epitome of fertility, longevity, lowinput, and total forage type cow. 855 has a tremendous maternal wedge, volume, andcapacity. She has a very interesting inbred pedigree. She is a natural daughter of our old503 Delia cow. Her sire was a son of 503, sired by Rito 054, so she is a mother-sonmating. 855 would be an excellent candidate for the IVF program to replicate more of herkind.

Octoraro Queen Missie 326 is an elevenyear old Pathfinder female with a perfectudder. She is very pleasing in her overallfunctional type. 326 has done us atremendous amount of good in our program. We will definitely use her linebredVikulation bull calf in the future. We decidedto use her in the IVF program and wereable to freeze seven sexed embryos, siredby the old N Bar 5522 bull. Of all the sireswe have ever used, 5522 can get the jobdone: udder quality, fertility, longevity andfunctional type.

Octoraro Delia 301 is a very high producing, strong indexing cow in our program. Wehave used multiple sons back into theprogram. She is a Viking out of our 503Viking, E31 cow. We had flushed herpreviously and we decided to work herthrough the IVF program. We wanted touse Emulation 31, her dam’s full brother, which would be the same mating asVikulation. We wanted to produce sistersto Vikulation and were able to freeze onesexed embryo with a pedigree that isidentical to the Vikulation bull.

Octoraro Delia 404 is a double bred E31 by5522 out of our 503 cow, making her amaternal sister to the 301 female. We soldhalf interest in 404 to the Sinclair programand they successfully flushed her. Thenwe purchased the half interest back andincluded her in our recent IVF program. She produced three frozen sexed heiferembryos sired by old Lodge of Wye. Lodgehas genetic defect free status and isknown for transmitting fertility, semenquality and especially longevity in hisfemales. We wanted to incorporate this intoour Delia cow family that is known forsimilar traits.

This offering is kind of the best ofthe best with the known tremendousgoodness and longevity of Lodge daughters. This could be real true build on geneticmaterial.

Octoraro Miss Wix 128 is an aged 13 yearold female. This cow has tremendousvolume, capacity, very broody with a fineudder that has held up well. In Vitro Fertilization

What Is In Vitro Fertilization? In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the process of creating embryos from oocytes(unfertilized egg cells) by fertilizing them with semen in a Petri dish. Oocytes arefirst collected from the ovaries of donors by ultrasound-guided follicularaspiration. They are then matured in a Petri dish and fertilized 20-24 hours later.Conventional, sexed frozen or reverse-sorted semen may be used for fertilization.Oocytes then develop in an incubator for seven days, at which point the resultingviable embryos are transferred into recipients or frozen.

What is reverse-sorted semen?Frozen semen is thawed, and our semen sorter is utilized to separate the femaleand male sperm cells. This process is referred to as “reverse-sorting”, becausethe sorting occurs after the semen has been previously frozen. The sorted semenof the desired gender is then used to fertilize the oocytes collected from donors. This process generally requires a minimum of two units of semen for a givensire.

What results can be expected from reverse-sorted semen?Based on fetal-sexing of pregnancies that result from reverse-sorted semen,Trans Ova achieves greater than 95% accuracy of selecting for female calves(slightly less for male calves). Although most sires will sort accurately, theprocess can be affected by semen quality and concentration. There is oftensignificant variation among sires in fertility and embryo development rates.

When can embryos be created from pregnant donors? The general window for creating embryos from pregnant donors is 40 to 100 daysof pregnancy. Our IVF program was composed of pregnant donors to takeadvantage of this extended window for creating offspring.

For a number of years Octoraro Angus has gathered frozen semen on many of the old pillarbulls of the breed. In recent years there have been strong inquiries about purchasing semenout of our cache. Therefore, we have decided to offer you semen on ten of the best, old, maternal efficiency bulls, some of which are proven defect free. There will be two unitsoffered per bull. We would recommend that due to the rareness, uniqueness and scarcity ofthis semen, that you only use one unit per flush or IVF. There are reserves on all semenpackages.
