As we enter the last few weeks of Lent, the Easter season is right around the corner. As you know Lent is a time of sacrifice and introspection and Easter is a time of resurrection and life. The Middle States process was an eighteen month process of self evaluation and introspection for

the school. The culmination of the process is a visit from the Middle States Evaluation and Accreditation Team , which took place on March 18-21. Based on their observations they will unanimously recommend Berks Catholic for accreditation. The visiting team consisted of the former principal of Trinity High School, current director of Pupil Services at Trinity High School, current principal of Delone Catholic High School, principal of Nazareth Academy, and a profes-sor of Education from Slippery Rock University. I would like to thank them for their commendations and recommendations as we continued to move Berks Catholic forward. We will use the valuable informa-tion we have gathered during Middles States to meld that with the strategic plan that is being formed to guide us over the next five years. Our Saints have been also been on the move doing Lenten service, in this issue you will read about NHS students at the Kennedy House, seniors at the Op-portunity House, Field Hockey players serving dinner at the Gift of Life Family House, students traveling to West Virginia for Habitat for Humanity during Holy Week, just to name a few. You can also read about our Bishop Scholars Sarah Blaise and Derek Burton, St. Peter Mathletes champions, our National Qualifiers in Forensics - Danielle Moore, Maddie Woytovich, Erin Apsokardu, and Robert Mangan. Theater students spent a night at the Miller Center learning improvisa-tion and DeSales Universtiy studying Shakespeare. As we begin the fourth quarter the culmination of the 2013-2014 school year of Berks Catholic is on the hori-zon. We will send the Saints of 2014 into the world to accomplish great things. They have grown spiritu-ally by attending Mass as a community, performing thousands of hours of service, attending retreats and discerning what vocation the Lord is calling them to-ward. They have grown closer as a Berks Catholic Family by enthusiastically supporting each other at sporting events, music, art and various other competi-tions. The entire Berks Catholic community came to-gether for our spring production of two sellout

performances of “Fiddler on the Roof”. On April 30th we are looking forward to our Grandparents joining us for Mass, breakfast, and a tour with their grandchildren. Our students have grown academically by com-peting and winning competitions in math, science and writing. Our seniors have been accepted into highly selective universities, explored options in the military, technical schools, and gap years involving service. The class of 2014 has already been offered over 5 mil-lion dollars in academic scholarships and by gradua-tion will probably be in the 9 to 10 million dollar range. Through God, Family and Academics we have had a great deal of Fun doing it all. Our students have en-countered Jesus in fun and unique ways through re-treats, dress down days, ski trips, clubs, spirit week, and Catholic schools week which culminated in Saints day. In early May many of our students will enjoy an-other beautiful prom at Stokesay Castle, our sports teams have won division and competed for county, district, and state championships. It has been another amazing year of growth for all involved in the Berks Catholic family. I am looking forward to a great last two months of school to celebrate all that is good about our Saints. God Bless you and your family, have a blessed Easter. Go Saints!

Gaudet mater ecclesia! With these words, “Mother Church rejoices!” Blessed, as of April 27th Saint John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council. This month the Church again rejoices at the Canonization of John XXIII and John Paul II both of whom spoke to the heart of the Church and Her youth. This is the month when we rejoice. We rejoice at the commemorations of Holy Week culminating in the celebration of our Lord's Resurrection. We rejoice in the accomplishments of our students who are moving toward completing the year's work. We rejoice for the class of 2014 as they complete the work they began four years ago and prepare for the next great horizon in their lives. We rejoice as a Family at the many accomplishments of our “Saints” throughout this year; in the classroom, on the courts and fields and on the stage in the spectacular production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” With the canonizations of Saints John XXIII and John Paul II we have the chance to recall so many won-derful moments in their lives. Earlier in the year the stu-dent body gathered for the celebration of Mass on the feast day of John Paul II. I reminded our “Saints” that John Paul's life wasn't all spiritual... that during his years in high school he was an athlete and star goalie of a soccer team. His skills as a brilliant student and an amateur actor would take him to Poland's premier university to study philosophy and language. During the Nazi occupation of Poland he began his studies for the priesthood. During his early years he was assigned at a Catholic High School in his home diocese and would become a bishop at a young age. Traveling to more than 120 countries he was the moral voice of the world and gave us treasures on Faith and Reason, the Gospel of Life, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and Our Lord's Divine Mercy. I had the chance to be in Saint John Paul's pres-ence once, at World Youth Day in Toronto Canada. That day he told the almost 1,000,000 young people to, “Listen to the voice of Jesus in the depths of your hearts! His words tell you who you are as Christians. They tell you what you must do to remain in his love. He offers one thing while the world offers another. The spirit of the world offers false illusions and parodies or distortions of happiness.” He said that the greatest deception, “and the deepest source of unhappiness, is the illusion of finding life by excluding God.” He explained that the world needs young people and he concluded saying, “We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father's love for us.” These words always gave me great cause to “rejoice.” This month, as the Church rejoices, as we all rejoice, we have this chance to pause and recall all that we have to celebrate as the Berks Catholic Family. A Blessed and Happy Easter and GO SAINTS! Rev. Eugene Ritz Chaplain

After eighteen months filled with numerous meetings, evaluating data from the Middle States sur-vey and gathering input from administration, faculty, staff, students, parents and other interested stake-holders, Berks Catholic High School was recom-mended for Accreditation by the Middle States Visiting team on Friday, March 21, 2014. The Visiting Team, composed of Dr. Nancy Burke, Educational Consultant and Associate Professor at Harrisburg Community Col-lege; Dr. Jason Hilton, Associate Professor at Slippery Rock University; Dr. Maureen Thiec, Principal of Delone Catholic in McSherysburg; Sister Mary Joan Jacob, Principal of Nazareth Academy in Philadelphia, and Mrs. Angela Heinick, Director of Student Services at Trinity High School in Harrisburg spent four days at Berks Catholic reviewing the self-assessment and inter-viewing numerous stakeholders. They spoke to groups of teachers, administrators, board members, students, coaches and parents. The Visiting Team also reviewed the three objectives for improving student performance that were designed by the Planning Team and Faculty. This recommendation for Accreditation is a great ac-complishment, which could not have happened without the support of the school community. The Internal Co-ordinators admitted the Middle States process was tedi-ous but worth every minute.

The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools is an organization that provides educational leadership, then evaluates and accredits institutions based on 12 standards of excellence. This Association will make the final decision on our Accreditation within the next six weeks. If Accreditation is granted, Berks Catholic will need to begin to implement its stra-tegic plan within the next few months.

Thought for the month: “Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.” Abigail Adams At long last……Welcome Spring! The third year of Berks Catholic is fast coming to a close! The months of April and May always seems to fly by so we need to prepare for the fast approaching end of the school year. Parents are asked to check MMS for failures. Teachers have been asked to contact parents if a stu-dent is in danger of failing for the year. Do not hesitate to email any teacher; we love to hear from you! Stu-dents in danger of failure for the year should try to make one last push in the fourth quarter and on the exam. Teachers are happy to help students during activ-ity period in the morning. Any student who fails a class for the year will be notified by the last day of school. They will be given the summer school information. That information will be mailed home as well. Students who do not receive summer school credit for a failure will not be allowed back in school in August. Dual Credit:

As the year draws to a close, seniors will need information on how to transfer Alvernia’s credits to their college. Information will be in the mail with in-structions by May. Dual Credit Registration for next year (2014-2015) will be in the mail by the end of April. The dead-line is June 30, 2014. Starting with the new school

year, Alvernia will no longer refund stu-dents whose credits do not transfer. Alver-nia will not accept late registrations. Scheduling: The first year of student online registration was a success! Students entered their class choices during Theology classes during the first week of March. Since most bugs in the system were worked out this year, stu-dents will register online from home next year. The long and tedious scheduling process is well underway. Students with scheduling conflicts will be notified in school before the end of the year.

Spotlight Field Trip: Upright Citizens Brigade at the Miller Center In spite of the snow, members of the SPOTLIGHT theater club made it to the Miller Cen-ter at Reading Area Community College, February 14th, to see the Upright Citizens Bri-gade, a comedy improv group based out of New York City. The evening included a pre-performance workshop, pizza, and a show. BC theater students shared the event with other area high school students and it became clear, after an hour of games and improv routines, that it was well worth battling snow and traffic to get there. The Upright Citizens Brigade was established in NYC in 1996 and is “widely recognized as home to today's funniest actors and writers. Among our esteemed alumni include sev-eral performers and writers for Saturday Night Live, The Office, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, 30 Rock, Best Week Ever, Old School, Blades of Glory, Semi-Pro and countless other films, commercials and television shows.” Under the guidance of UCB actor, Karin Louise, BC students learned the basic elements of long and short improvisation. Working in small groups they improved conversations where every sentence began with, “yes, but..”, made alphabet shapes with their bodies, and told stories such as hunting down the famous ‘sewer finch’ with blow darts in Central Park. And even though the performance was cut short due to an electric outage, in true professional spirit the cast kept up the improv while BC students lit the stage with their cell phones. It was a great evening and members of SPOTLIGHT are already brainstorming ways to fund a future field trip to NYC to gain more training in comedy improvisation as well as catch a UBC performance!

BC Theater Students Participate in Shakespeare Competition

On March 11, seven students braved the daunting world of the famous bard, William Shakespeare, by competing in the first ever Berks Catholic Shake-speare competition. Greg Boyer (junior), Gabi Ferreira (sophomore), Summer Rose Biros (sophomore), Militza Molina (freshman), Kaylin Wittmeyer (freshman), Gabi Taormina (freshman), and Michael Gambone (freshman) took on soliloquies from Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, As You Like It, 12th Night, and Two Gentlemen of Verona. They immersed themselves in the Elizabethan text - studying, memoriz-ing, blocking and rehearsing - in an effort to bring to life Shakespeare’s vibrant characters. They performed in front of a panel of four Berks Catholic teachers, Mrs. Hartline, Mr. Scollick, Mr. Shidisky, and Mr. Olivard, who chose three final-ist and an alternate to move on to the next round of competition, the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival High School Competition at Desales University. Kaylin Wittmeyer, Gabi Ferreira, and Summer Rose Biros were selected from the group to represent BC at Desales. Gabi Taormina was chosen as alter-

nate. Because the group was small and because this was BC’s first time at the competition, all seven participants were able to attend the competition to support their teammates and to participate in the activities of the competition.

Kudos go out to NHS students, who served over 150 people at the Kennedy House on Saturday, March 1st. All the food, drinks and paper products were donated by the members of Berks Catholic National Honor So-ciety. The students prepared, cooked, and served the food and took care of the cleanup as well. What an inspiring group of students!

Awesome Saints!!! Ten seniors cooked and served breakfast at 5:45 AM on March 11th at Opportunity House. Great job Saints!

Home Cook Heroes Kudos go out to members of the Field Hockey Team, some members of the team were Home Cook Heroes at the Gift of Life Family House, Philadelphia. The mem-bers prepared a dinner of Shepard’s Pie, Salad and Irish Soda Bread for the guests. The Family House pro-vides temporary lodging for organ transplant patients and their families.

Habitat for Humanity and Berks Catholic Easter break for many high school students is normally a time to relax, hang out with friends and family, and catch up on school work. However, for 8 Berks Catholic seniors, their Easter experience will be slightly different as they will be volunteering a week of their time to work for the less fortunate. Together with Mr. Ditsky and Ms. Gulling, the following students will be helping to build houses for Habitat for Humanity in Mon County, West Virginia: Tomàs Aguilar, Alex Ronky, Pat Maher, Emily Walker, Juliana Wright, Sarah Blaise, Elle Surhoff, and Gabriela Marrero. This is the second annual Berks Catholic Habitat trip to Ap-palachia. The group will be departing on April 13th and will return on Good Friday. The tasks at hand could range from electrical work, dry-wall, siding, or any other aspect of building a house. The students will also be able to interact with the new homeowners and to learn a little more about their lifestyle and the impor-tance of serving others.

Congratulations to Jeremy Earnest, ‘17, Jeremy participated in the Reading Musical Foundation An-nual Scholarship Auditions. He took first place in piano and was awarded the Bruce B. Bengston Keyboard & Organ Scholarship. Jeremy also was awarded the
