Founded in 1850, Belton is the county seat for Bell County. It has historically served as the center for local government and as a marketplace and shipping point for area farmers and ranchers. Between 1867 and 1887, Belton was a regional center for the cattle boom industry as it was an important stopping point for cattle herds headed toward the famed Chisholm Trail.

Between 1880 and 1930, Belton was a processing center for the region’s cotton growers; in fact, cotton was the county’s principal cash crop during this period, particularly in the Blackland Prairie region in east Bell County. Belton’s long and distinctive past is evidenced by the city’s many historic homes and commercial buildings. Charming storefronts characterize the downtown National Historic District, which also boasts the impressive Bell County Courthouse, built in 1885.

Today, Belton is home to 19,314 people. New residents continue to be drawn to Belton by outstanding schools, great parks, a growing live music scene, new retail, and by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, also located in Belton. The

historic college campus, chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845, provides both students and area residents with educational, cultural and recreational opportunities. Providing a natural backdrop to historic Belton are over 160 acres of parkland located throughout the city.

Situated along Belton Lake, Belton is a city abounding with parks and recreational opportunities. The beautiful Nolan Creek meanders through central Belton where residents and visitors can enjoy a walk along the Nolan Creek Hike and Bike Trail. Belton ISDThe Belton Independent School District (BISD) is the

second largest school district in Bell County with an enrollment just over 10,000 students in grades Pre-K

- 12. With a vision of educating students so that they are prepared to excel in tomorrow’s world,

BISD is committed to providing instructional opportunities that prepare students for a world

where they will be expected to be experts at using technology tools for communicating,

creating, and managing information.

BISD is meeting the challenge of engaging today’s technology savvy students

by moving all secondary campuses to one-to-one environments. This

effective use of digital devices and connections sets the stage for

engaging classroom projects and allows for a widespread

and learning environments. BISD is leading the way in

digital learning, and visitors from across the state and

nation are coming to learn new ideas in this area.

BISD is considered a fast growth school district due to the steady growth of its student population. Enrollment has increased approximately 40% over the last ten years. The District’s most current demographic projections show that BISD will have approximately 13,000 students by 2020. Planning for that growth has been ongoing. After a careful look at the District’s facilities needs by a committee of parents, community members and staff, a bond election was recommended and supported by voters in the spring of 2012. High Point Elementary, located in the northern part of the District off Hwy 317 and FM 2483, opened in the fall of 2013. Chisholm Trail Elementary, located on Wheat Road close to Hwy 190, and North Belton Middle School, located on Prairie View Road, will both open in the fall of 2014. At the same time, the Belton Early Childhood School will relocate pre-kindergarten classes from five separate campuses to one location at what is now Tyler Elementary School.

The future is bright for BISD. Superintendent Dr. Susan Kincannon, said, “I am excited about what the future holds for our students. Technology is a driving force in the world today, and we want our students to be equipped with an education that helps them to succeed in a changing world.”

University of Mary Hardin-BaylorThe University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) is a Christ-centered university affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845, UMHB is one of the oldest continuously-operating higher education institutions in the state. The historic 275-acre campus has been located in Belton since 1886.

Today, over 3,200 students attend UMHB, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 16 to 1. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor offers degrees in more than 60 different undergraduate majors, six master’s programs, and a doctoral program in education administration

The university has been ranked in the top tier of regional universities in the southwest by U.S. News & World Report every year since 2005. With more than 360 full-time faculty and staff, UMHB has garnered a nationally recognized academic reputation. It also is one the most affordable private universities in the southwest.

Texas A&M University Central TexasTexas A&M University–Central Texas was born in the spirit of community cooperation on September 1, 1999, as Tarleton-Central Texas and became a stand-alone university on May 27, 2009, as a member of The Texas A&M University System. A&M-Central Texas is a military friendly, upper-level institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

The student population at A&M-Central Texas is diverse and growing, currently serving over 2,500 students. Classes are offered at several convenient sites, including area community colleges and Fort Hood in order to accommodate both full-time and part-time students and to serve the entire Central Texas area. Central Texas Christian SchoolThe mission of Central Texas Christian School (CTCS) is to educate students with the transforming truth of Christ, inspiring academic excellence, Godly character and integrity in life pursuits. In 1987, a group of 5 families from different churches and backgrounds came together to form Central Texas Christian School. Those original families negotiated with Temple Bible Church to rent space and to maintain a separate board of education and finances. That first year enrollment was 14 students with 2 classes. In 1997 CTCS purchased property that would become its permanent

home. Since that modest beginning, the only major change has been in the number of students and staff. The original concepts and mission are still visibly prominent 24 years later. CTCS is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (an accreditation agency recognized by the Texas Education Agency) and is part of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools organization to provide CTCS students the opportunities Christian witnesses in competitions.

Central Texas Christian School continues to be the only interdenominational school including Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in the Temple/Belton/Killeen metropolitan area. Seton Medical Center Harker HeightsSince opening its doors on June 18, 2012, patients remain at the center of what Seton Medical Center Harker Heights is all about. Belton boasts a variety of churches that are integral to the life of the community. Hailing from a number of denominations, these different churches offer a mosaic of worship experiences to area residents. Whether one prefers traditional worship or contemporary, liturgical or free, a house of worship can be found to fit just about any personality, and all of these expressions combine to form the one voice of Belton’s worshiping community.

Beyond its different worship styles, this community also expresses itself in other ways, particularly in the area of service.

Church members prove to be active in many aspects of the greater Belton community, and different church families sponsor a variety of ministries to the same. These ministries reach out to people of all ages and backgrounds, ranging from weekday childcare for children to socials for senior adults and addressing every age group in between. More than these, churches in the Belton community also seek to minister to those experiencing economic hardship through such organizations as Helping Hands, Hope for the Hungry, and the Body of Christ Community Clinic as well as through their own benevolence ministries.

All of these activities show the commitment of Belton’s different area churches to two goals: to worship God and to serve Him. The first is accomplished in worship services and in the lives of individuals. The second is accomplished through devotion to God and service to others. Perhaps it is especially in regard to service to others that the churches of Belton can be seen to impact the wider community, but their worship of God and devotion to Him also encompass an important part of the spirit of the Belton community.

History is made every day. It teaches us and tells the story of someone, something, or some event. It’s the root that anchors tradition. It’s that very anchor that has kept the Annual 4th of July Celebration and PRCA Rodeo alive, looked forward to, and revered by many in Belton. Fond memories have been made by those who have attended the celebration’s events. Some talk about the cowboys and cowgirls showing what they’re made of at the rodeo. Stories are told of watching the 4th of July Parade from the same spot with family year after year. Some tales talk of turkey legs eaten, summer romances beginning, and crafts bought at the Festival on Nolan Creek. Many reflect upon wise words and impactful speeches given at the Patriotic Program. Whatever the stories may be, the Annual 4th of July Celebration and PRCA Rodeo is a historic event that has impacted many and survived the test of time. The event, which consists of a Kick-Off BBQ, Patriotic Program, 4th of July Parade, the Festival on Nolan Creek, the Western Gift Show, and a three day rodeo, can trace its roots all the way back to 1850 with the first documented 4th of July Parade.

The Kick-Off BBQ signals the start of the 4th of July Celebration & PRCA Rodeo. Held in Yettie-Polk Park, the BBQ draws many from the

community to enjoy lip-smacking good Texas BBQ, listen to live music, and share stories of past celebrations. Belton Mayor, Marion Grayson, returns year after year for this event.

“The Kick-Off BBQ is like a community reunion,” said Grayson. “Everyone is so busy these days, but you get to see them again at the BBQ.”

Events on the 4th of July start with the Patriotic Program. Traditionally held at 9 am at the historic downtown Bell County Courthouse, the program features the Posting of the Colors by Ft. Hood soldiers, singing from the Belton High School Madrigals, and a key-note speech from the year’s featured speaker.

Following the Patriotic program is the historic 4th of July parade. While the parade can be traced all the way back to 1850, it became an annual event in 1919. 30,000 people line Main Street and Central Avenue to watch floats, live bands, tractors, wagons, walking and marching groups, and horse groups show their patriotic spirit. Vying for a good spot to see the parade doesn’t just occur on the 4th of July. Many can be seen parking trailers, leaving a vehicle, or camping out to get that perfect spot or to assure they have


their family’s traditional spot saved. Speaking of tradition, many families have 4th of July traditions tied to this very parade. Sarah Wahlquist, a Belton resident, enjoys getting time with her friends and family during the parade.

“We meet all our friends and their kids in the same spot every year and watch the parade together,” said Wahlquist. “It’s been fun having this tradition, getting to see the kids grow up to enjoy it, and to look back at all the pictures we have taken over the years.”

The Parade averages over 150 entries each year. Many of those are families and businesses who have been a part of the parade for many years. Being an entrant has become a tradition for them. One family in particular is the Long family. People who regularly attend the parade can’t imagine it without them and fully expect to see the Long’s Radio Flyer wagon train. Dr. Will “Hypo” Long, the Patriarch of the Long family, was a long time resident of Belton and over 40 years ago had an idea to get his grandchildren into the parade and have it be a fun ride as well. The idea turned into the lawn tractor pulled wagon train everyone expects to see at the parade. The grandchildren each had their own wagon equipped with a chair and waved to the spectators as their grandfather pulled them along. As the years went on the train grew as his grandchildren grew up, got married and had kids of their own. Today, Dr. Bill Long, Dr. Will’s son, carries on the tradition with his tractor pulling his grandchildren in little red wagons. Meredith Long, one of Dr. Will’s grandchildren, considers this a special part of her life.

“I look forward to the parade each year because carrying on my grandpa’s tradition is such a special thing,” Long said. “He loved Belton and the people he served and always looked for ways to have fun. The fact that my family is willing to keep that going teaches me that loving my community and having fun while I’m doing it is important.”

From its humble beginnings, the parade now draws many from near and far, is broadcasted live on television, streamed instantly on the internet, and has become a social media savvy event. Saying that this event is steeped in tradition would be an understatement. It’s a part of Belton.

The Festival on Nolan Creek follows the 4th of July Parade. Food vendors, arts and crafts booths, petting zoos, pony rides, and many other fun activities fill Yettie Polk Park for attendees to enjoy. The event is also filled with the sound of fiddlers

showing off their talent at the Old Time Fiddler Contest. One of the most popular parts of the Festival, the Fiddler Contest d r a w s contestants from the Bell County area and across the U.S. Participants, ranging from age 3 and up, rosin up their bows and entertain spectators throughout the duration of the Festival. Winners from each category receive a cash prize.

Finally, no 4th of July Celebration would be complete without the three-day PRCA rodeo. The rodeo became an official part of the 4th Celebration in 1924 and was held at the top of “Penelope Street Hill.” The “arena” was a simple, dry, and rocky open space that offered just enough room for “young bucks” to showcase their skill. In the 1930’s the Rodeo joined the Cowboys Turtle Association, which later became the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or the PRCA as we know it today. Following World War II a new rodeo area was built in Confederate Park to accommodate the growing talent and crowds. It was during this era that Belton hosted one of the first nighttime rodeos in the southwest. As the Rodeo grew, so did the number of those who came to see cowboys riding and roping. With this growth and night rodeos becoming the standard, the need for more room for stock, participants, and spectators had arisen. In the 1980’s the Belton Chamber voted to move the rodeo to the newly constructed and air conditioned Bell County Expo Center. The rodeo is still held at the Expo Center and continues to grow and evolve to include amazing opening ceremonies, Stick Horse Grand Entries for the kiddos, Mutton Bustin’, and the Western Gift Show. The gift show runs all three nights of the rodeo and includes arts, crafts, western wear, and various other vendors offering unique items and keepsakes.

Tradition is what makes the 4th of July Celebration and PRCA Rodeo an event that has stood the test of time. It’s what keeps families coming back and ultimately what will continue the history of the 4th of July Celebration and PRCA Rodeo in Belton, TX.

Belton has a proud history of supporting the soldiers of Fort Hood and service men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. When the City of Belton released plans to renovate and make Central Avenue a gateway into the city, the Belton Chamber seized the opportunity to make these improvements about more than just the city. The result of meetings with the Chamber of Commerce and city officials was the Patriot Way Brick Walk Project and a strategic partnership with the City of Belton that gave birth to Patriot Plaza.

Patriot WayHonor, service and commitment. These are just a few of the core values of men and women who make up our nation’s armed services. These individuals swore an oath to protect and defend our Constitution and the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. At home, on the seas, in the air or on some foreign shore, our military have secured the inalienable rights of life,

liberty and the pursuit of happiness for people around the globe. To honor those who have served our nation, the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Belton established the Patriot Way Brick Walk.

The Patriot Way Brick Walk provides a public venue for area citizens to purchase a customized engraved brick to be laid in the sidewalk along Central Avenue in downtown Belton as a permanent memorial for those who serve or have served in the military. The first phase of the project was dedicated in 2010 during an inspiring Veteran’s Day ceremony. Since the inaugural dedication, several more groups of bricks have been installed and dedicated.

The Patriot Way Brick Walk also features storyboards along the sidewalk. These storyboards depict some of the historic accounts of those who were honored with a brick.

Patriot PlazaThe Star Spangled Banner proudly waves as people drive past on I-35 welcoming people to the City of Belton.

The Belton Chamber, along with the City of Belton, dedicated Patriot Plaza to the men and women of the armed forces who have served or are currently serving our country.

Chairman of the Military Relations Committee Jay Taggart is very proud of the Patriot Way Brick Walk and Patriot Plaza.

“It is important for our community to recognize and honor those men and women that have served our nation and those currently serving as members of the Armed Forces,” he said.

The plaza is connected with the Patriot Way Brick Walk which lines the sidewalks of Central Avenue in downtown Belton with engraved bricks.

Because of Belton’s close proximity to Ft. Hood and the strong relationships that have been developed over the years, the Chamber wants to continue recognizing its military neighbors.

The 80-foot flagpole is located on the corner of East Central Ave. and I-35 and constantly

serves as a reminder of our commitment to our nation’s heroes.

“As new bricks are dedicated and story boards are added to the Patriot Way Project, we will continue to tell their stories for generations to come,” Taggart said, “It is a reminder that our freedoms are not free.”

The Belton community enjoys a close relationship with Fort Hood, the largest Army base in the U.S. Located just 20 miles west of Belton, Fort Hood is home for over 40,000 soldiers, their families and thousands of civilians and retirees, many who live, shop, worship and attend schools in Belton. Through the leadership of the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce Military Relations Committee, Belton has formed an active relationship with Fort Hood’s leadership and military units. In October 2008, the City of Belton joined other Central Texas communities in signing the Central Texas/Fort Hood Army Community Covenant, renewing their commitment to building and sustaining partnerships that support the strength, resilience and readiness of soldiers and their families.

Living in the New NormalThrough our Belton Military Family Support Committee, we sponsor Meet Belton for Military Families in Belton ISD. The event is

a dinner and town hall-style meeting aimed at identifying and offering support to all of the military families living within the school district. Through the program, the committee, along with Belton ISD, has helped start before and after school care programs. They have also developed a Military Family Packet full of important and useful information about Belton that new families receive as they register their children for school.

Military RelationsThe Belton Area Chamber of Commerce Military Relations Committee participates in many of Fort Hood’s command ceremonies and Welcome Home Celebrations for soldiers returning from deployments. It provides support to units preparing to deploy and to the Rear Detachment Commands during deployments. The relations committee encourages community support for Fort Hood programs, including Santa’s Workshop

and Wild West Night, that provide support to military families.

Adopt-A-Fort Hood UnitWe have an active Adopt-a-Fort Hood Unit program, matching many of our businesses and organizations with specific Fort Hood units. They are able to share support for each other in a variety of ways, benefiting all involved.

Belton Area Military Spouses SupportNo one knows what a military spouse goes through better than another military spouse. For this very reason the Belton Area Military Spouses Support (BAMSS) group was formed. This group helps pull together military spouses to form a network of support for each other when spouses are deployed. Belton is Central Texas’ best kept secret -- a small city with natural beauty that offers activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Within its city limits, Belton has 15 recreational park areas that span more than 160 acres. In the heart of the city, Confederate Park, Yettie Polk Park, and Harris Community Park sit upon the banks of picturesque Nolan Creek. The Nolan Creek Hike and Bike Trail meanders along the bank, linking together the three parks. The trail offers 1.1 miles of concrete pathway through lush landscaping with magnificent views of the

creek. As you walk the trail, take time to read the historic storyboards, each detailing a significant event of the famous Chisholm Trail. Confederate Park serves as the city’s Park and Ride commuter facility, while Yettie Polk Park is a perfect location for an outdoor wedding with a quaint gazebo and audience seating. Heritage Park is the city’s premiere sports facility park, with lots of open space, soccer and baseball fields. Chisholm Trail Park is located adjacent to several school campuses, and provides softball fields and green space to students as well as citizens. Cool off at one of the city’s two splash pads, Harris Community

Park and South Wall Tiger Park, conveniently located in north and south Belton.

In 2010, Belton formed the recreation division of the Parks & Recreation department and began offering programs to the community. Now the Harris Community Center hosts exercise classes, art instruction, trainings and more. Christmas on the Chisholm Trail, Movie in the Park, and other fun, family-oriented special events continue to grow. In addition, sports programs are available in the parks, so join the fun with 3 on 3 basketball, disc golf, and ultimate frisbee tournaments.

If you are looking to get your children more involved in recreational or competitive sports, you may be spending a lot of time at Chisholm Trail Park and/or Heritage Park. The two facilities offer athletic fields for softball, baseball, soccer, Frisbee and archery tournaments, as well as walking trails and picnic areas for your next family gathering. Amenities offered in the immediate Belton area add to the recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. Belton Lake is a Central Texas destination for water sports, fishing tournaments, camping, picnics or just relaxing. Here, anglers catch white crappie, walleye, flathead catfish, channel catfish, bluegill, sunfish, largemouth and white bass. Fed by the Leon River, Belton Lake

is a haven for fishing and boating enthusiasts, covering 12,300 surface acres with 136 miles of shoreline.

Fed by the Lampasas River, Stillhouse Hollow Lake is recognized for its water quality. It covers 11,830 acres and includes 58 miles of shoreline. Open to all, the lake offers many attractive areas for outdoor recreation, water sports, hunting and fishing, sailing or just relaxing. Hiking enthusiasts enjoy the scenic waterfall located on the Chalk River Falls Nature Trail.

Additionally, Miller Springs Nature Center offers 266 acres for hiking and exploring nature on a self-guided basis. This authentically restored prairie area includes several well-maintained walking trails lined with native broom grass, blue stem and wildflowers that lead to picturesque sites throughout the center. Located in the historic “Tennessee Valley” along the Leon River, Miller Springs Nature Center is home to three canyons and overlooks the Belton Lake spillway.

Swim, sunbathe and enjoy Belton Lake at Sierra Beach, BLORA’s authorized swimming area, which, when lifeguards are on duty, is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer

season. Two large water slides are located near the beach. The snack bar sells refreshments. More than 300 family picnic sites and 143 covered picnic shelters, many with barbecue grills, are scattered throughout the park. Fishing, ski and party boats are available for rent at the boat dock. Fishing tours, fishing contests, and weekend lake tours are also offered. For more information call 254-287-4907.

For those preferring indoor water activities visit the Roy and Jean Potts Swim Center on the campus of Belton High School. The center offers a variety of activities from swimming lessons and water aerobics to open swim times. The Swim Center offers an opportunity to try out to become a Belton Swim Master. Belton is becoming a hub for special events and entertainment. Belton Market Days is a fun way to spend every third Saturday of the month. Bell County MuseumFor decades, the award-winning Bell County Museum has been a vital resource for the collection, interpretation and preservation of the historic and prehistoric heritage of the Bell County region. The museum was originally housed in the beautifully restored Carnegie Library Building, constructed in 1904-05. A major expansion in 2006 provided an additional 10,000 square feet of space which allows the museum to expand its mission to include providing quality traveling exhibitions. The Bell County Museum is a partner of Prehistoric Texas: Dinosaurs, Mammoths and Ancient Texans, an award winning heritage tourism initiative.

Musick Alumni Center and MuseumThe Musick Alumni Center and Museum at the Parker House on the campus of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is open daily from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The museum is housed in the former president’s home which has been remodeled to become a showcase for the rich heritage of the school. The first floor exhibits communicate fourteen of the traditions loved by students and alumni while the upstairs tells the chronological history of UMHB, beginning in 1845. Bell County Youth Fair and Livestock ShowThe Bell County Youth Fair and Livestock Show, Inc. was founded in the 1950s and has grown into one of the largest county shows in Central Texas. Belton Young Professionals (BYP) is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to providing young adults with opportunities to develop socially, professionally, and civically. BYP is committed to attracting and retaining young professionals in our area by enhancing quality of life, creating community pride, being a collective voice in the community, and cultivating the next generation of leaders. We strive to achieve this goal through social networking events, community service opportunities and professional development lunches. BYP aims to keep young professionals informed and engaged professionally as well as in the community. BYP is geared towards those who live, work and play in Belton. Our community has great things to offer young professionals.

Whether you sell fast cars or fast food, you have a place in BYP. Members are generally between the ages of 19-40; however, this age is merely a guideline. An individual’s willingness to be young-at-heart is more important than their birth certificate. BYP is always looking for vibrant people with fresh ideas.

Leadership Belton is an excellent source for learning leadership skills. The 10-month program focuses on three key elements: community awareness training, leadership training and team building.

Participants meet monthly and visit key locations around Belton and Bell County for a behind-the-scenes look at non-profit organizations, industrial businesses, governmental entities and quality of life opportunities. Each meeting day is packed full of tours and talks with a particular professional service in mind, such as Education Day or Social Services Day.

In addition to visiting great locations, participants receive leadership training from nationally recognized SOS Leadership Institute. Instructor Bill Moyer and his son Billy Moyer bring years of leadership training experience to the program. The training offers a look into personal goals, time management, strategies for working with a group, personal success development and more.

Another element of the program which has proven successful is the team building component. The class is divided into groups and asked to select a short-term or long-term project within the community of Belton that ultimately has a lasting impact. The groups are given a mentor who is a past class participant to help advise, counsel, coach and assist the team through the project process. The projects are funded by donations obtained by the team. The goal is for the group to use the different dynamic personalities in it to accomplish a significant project together.

Located at the crossroads of Interstate Highway 35 and U.S. Highway 190, Belton is within 180 miles of every major market in Texas. This charming community can be found approximately 135 miles south of Dallas/Fort Worth and 55 miles north of Austin, placing Belton in the center of the state’s rapidly growing high-tech corridor.

Belton offers the amenities of a small community– low crime, proactive business climate and a strong work ethic– with the advantages of a large city. As the bulls-eye of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), Belton draws its labor force from a population of over 405,000. Texas is experiencing astounding growth, and the Belton area mirrors these trends. Based on the 2010 Census, Belton’s population has increased by 25% since 2000. The rippling effect is evident in everything from residential and commercial development to the steady addition of campuses to the Belton Independent School District and the $100 million investment in capital improvements to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Recently, Belton welcomed CGI, a Canadian technology service firm, to the Belton Business Park. Big Stories from Texas, a publication from the Governor’s office, named this project as one of the state’s largest business expansions and relocations in the IT and High Tech Sector for 2013.
