Founded in 1949, in what is known today as the Southern States Athle c Conference, the SSAC has prospered and excelled both athle cally as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 ins tu ons from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athle cs Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athle c Conference (GAC) and remained so un l 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the offi cial name was again changed to the Southern States Athle c Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expanded to 16 teams for the 2013-14 season with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Mar n Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transi oned to the Na onal Collegiate Athle c Associa on (NCAA) Division II, in addi on to Southern Polytechnic State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both ins tu ons will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, so ball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and fi eld. Since its incep on and affi lia on with the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputa on as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC boasts 32 teams and 11 individual na onal tles, while 30 more teams have fi nished as na onal runners-up. With its offi ce based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2014-15 academic year marks the 15th year for Auburn Montgomery athle cs compe ng as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 67 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA) since 1975. In those 39 years, AUM has claimed 23 na onal championships and seven of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a na onal championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a na onal organiza on with nearly 300 ins tu onal members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athle cs. Since its introduc on of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering fi rst-rate athle cs programs. The NAIA has con nuously affi rmed its commitment to equality by becoming the fi rst na onal organiza on to off er ins tu onal postseason opportuni es to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow ins tu onal membership to historically black ins tu ons in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athle cs programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by suppor ng academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and ac vity as an opportunity to inten onally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the fi ve core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefi t of each individual. In addi on, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA ins tu on’s commitment to the ini a ve with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in compe on, academic focus, character recogni on and character promo on.

First Season

A two- me All-Southern States Athle c Conference performer and Honorable Men on NAIA All-American in 2013, Maren Heller will join the Auburn Montgomery coaching staff in 2014 as a graduate assistant coach. A na ve of Leonberg, Germany, Heller appeared in 30 games during her two years with the Warhawks, earning 29 starts. Despite missing

me in both seasons due to injury, Heller helped AUM to a 15-12-3 record on the pitch and consecu ve appearances in the SSAC Tournament. Last season, Heller saw ac on in 15 games for the Warhawks, pos ng one goal and an assist, while a emp ng 13 shots. She earned fi rst-team all-conference accolades, as she was a key piece of a defensive unit that allowed only 22 goals and 176 shots during the year. As a junior, she started all 15 games in which she appeared, earning second-team all-conference honors a er helping AUM to an 11-6-2 record. On the season, she tallied three goals and three assists. Heller was named to the SSAC All-Academic team following each season and earned Capital One Academic All-District and Second-Team All-America honors in 2012. HOLLYCLARKE

Student Assistant CoachFirst Season

Following a three-year playing career in which she was honored by the Southern States Athle c Conference all three seasons, Holly Clarke will remain on the sidelines for the AUM women’s soccer team in 2014 as a student assistant coach. Clarke started 48 matches during her tenure with the Warhawks, winning 25 games and pos ng eight shutouts. She fi nished her career ranked second in the

program’s history in goals against average and fi h in saves. Last season Clarke allowed just 13 goals in more than 1,200 minutes between the nets, tallying four shutouts and 35 saves en route to second-team all-conference accolades. She also collected second team honors in 2012, when she allowed just 17 goals in 1,622 minutes. She posted a career-best scoreless streak of be er than 442 minutes. The year prior she was selected a member of the SSAC All-Freshman Team a er stopping 44 saves in 15 matches. Clarke has also been extremely successful in the classroom at AUM, earning NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, Capital One Academic All-America Second-Team accolades and All-Academic honors from the SSAC twice. She was also a two- me Capital One Academic All-District selec on. Addi onally, she is a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Prior to joining the Warhawks, she a ended Hewe Sixth Form in Norwich, England, and played three seasons of club soccer for the Norwich City Ladies. Clarke is the daughter of Alan and Frances Clarke. She is currently majoring in exercise science at AUM.

NICOLELETFORD

Student Assistant CoachFirst Season

Nicole Le ord will join the Warhawks’ coaching staff in 2014 for her fi rst season as a student assistant coach. A Second-Team All-Southern States Athle c Conference selec on last season, Le ord was one of four AUM players to start all 19 games, tying for the team lead with nine goals and 20 points. She also led the team with 50 shots and 30 shots on

goal. On three occasions, she scored mul ple goals. She was named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete following the comple on of last season. The season prior Le ord also started all 19 games, collec ng four assists, including three against Brewton-Parker. She was selected to the SSAC All-Academic team each year. Before her arrival at AUM, Le ord a ended Forth Valley College in Falkirk, Scotland. She also played four years of club soccer for the Falkirk Ladies FC, where she helped the team to the League Cup Championship in 2006. Le ord is the daughter of Debbie Le ord and is majoring in sports management.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK The Auburn Montgomery women’s soccer team will begin the 2014 with just six returning le erwinners from last year’s 11-7-1 squad, but op mism remains high for the Warhawks. Despite that op mism, several key ques ons will need to be addressed during the preseason. Among those ques ons is who will step up and replace four All-Southern States Athle c Conference performers? How will the team respond to returning just 9.5 percent of its goals, 12.6 percent of its points and 15.3 percent of its shots? How will the team adjust to a new coach?

“We lost some key players, but I think we built around a very strong core with our recrui ng,” women’s soccer coach, and former graduate assistant with the program, Lorna Brownlie said. “The newcomers that we brought in are very athle c and will give us an opportunity to be similar to past years. I think it is a good thing to build off a structure that we are familiar with. We have some pieces that we are unsure of, but think we will be able to mold those into place during the preseason.” Despite the ques ons, AUM returns several key

pieces that will serve as stability in the program, both from a play and leadership standpoint. Senior midfi elder Krista Hagen has seen ac on in 56 games during her career, scoring once and assis ng on 10 addi onal goals. Junior defender Ida Bjerklund, a second-team all-conference performer last season, will anchor a defensive unit which allowed just 22 goals in 2013. Senior goalkeeper Chloe Crook made fi ve starts for AUM in goal last year and posted a 4-1 record in those matches, one of which was a shutout. Sophomore Amy Glynn will look to build on a strong fi rst season with the

Warhawks in which she earned All-Freshman Team accolades from the SSAC. Juniors Lila Remache and Kendall McCardell will also return and will provide experience in the midfi eld. The Warhawks also welcome nine talented newcomers to the program, all of which will compete for playing me, if not star ng spots. Joining the program for the 2014 season will be junior midfi elders Stephanie Anes and Julia Losert, as well as freshman goalkeeper Morgan Glenn, defenders Emilie Larsen and Leah Bassow, midfi elder Michaela Dahlin and forwards Caroline Booth, Megan Kowalski and Kourtney Presor. With a wealth of new faces, one of the major factors in the season will be determining the role of each player. Brownlie expects the preseason will certainly aid in determining the shape of the team. “We are really going to experiment and try to fi nd the pieces that work for this team,” Brownlie said. “We are a close group and we all have the same goals. We are going to have to pull together, ba le through playing a lot of minutes and other adversity, but they have all accepted the challenge. We know what we want to accomplish and I think that if we stay as a cohesive group, we can meet those goals. I am excited about ge ng started.”

Goalkeepers Crook is projected to take over in goal for the Warhawks following the departure of two- me all-conference performer Holly Clarke. Crook won four of her fi ve starts in her fi rst season at AUM, following a standout junior college career at Monroe Community College, where she earned NJCAA All-American honors as a sophomore. “Chloe has been chomping at the bit to take over in goal,” Brownlie, a former keeper herself, said. “She has prepared well for it and is excited about the challenge. She has a wealth of experience from the junior college level, where she led the team to the na onal tournament. She is a strong presence and has great athle c ability. I think last year helped her mature and she is ready to take on more of a leadership role. She is a calm presence in the back, which will be a key for our team.” Glenn, a local standout at Stanhope Elmore High School last season, will back up Crook. However, Brownlie thinks she has the ability help the team immediately in the form of healthy compe on. “Morgan has the ability to contribute this year,” said Brownlie of Glenn. “She is a great shot stopper, but is s ll young. She will need to con nue to improve and I think having Chloe to compete against everyday will only make her be er.”

Defenders The Warhawks surrendered just 22 goals and allowed only 174 shots last season, with Bjerklund and Glynn largely contribu ng to those numbers. Bjerklund will take over the leadership role among the defenders, both verbally and by her quality play. “Ida will not only be our anchor on defense, but will also be the spine of our team by playing up the

middle,” Brownlie said. ”She is a tremendous leader, who I think can take her game to another level. She has great strength, ability and fi tness. She is an all-around player who I trust en rely.” Glynn, who appeared in 15 games last season, will also be counted on to lead the unit which will need to work in a pair of new starters. “Amy took a few games to adjust to the American game last year, but with a year under her belt I am expec ng big things,” said Brownlie. “She returned from the summer fi t and healthy, which is certainly a good sign for the upcoming year.” Newcomers Bassow and Larsen are projected to start alongside Bjerklund and Glynn. Bassow comes to AUM from Cologne, Germany, where she played club for DJK Südwest. Larsen, who is from Porsgrunn, Norway, will join a fellow Norwegian in Bjerklund on the back line a er playing for IF Urædd. “Leah played for a very strong club program in Germany and I project her playing next to Ida,” Brownlie said. “I think they will make a great combina on because they play so similar. She is a very technical player who will help us build from the back. She will be a key part in our defense.” “Emilie is very quick and athle c,” Brownlie con nued. “She is very technical and loves to play. I think she will hit the ground running and play a signifi cant role for our team this year.” Losert, a transfer from Nyack College in New York, will also factor into the mix along the defensive line.

Midfi elders Following the gradua on of three starters, including honorable men on All-American Maren Heller, the success of the midfi eld will rely on three returners in Hagen, Remache and McCardell, as well as several new faces. Hagen will provide stability at the posi on, as she has started 52 games during the past three seasons. “Krista is a reliable, blue-collar midfi elder,” Brownlie said. “She does all the dirty work and never expects to receive credit. She sees the fi eld well and does everything she can to get her teammates involved. She is a very tough and underrated player.” Remache and McCardell were also key players last season for the Warhawks and will be expected to elevate their produc on this year. “Lila has a tremendous skill set and really u lizes her quickness,” Brownlie said. “She seems to fi nd goals out of nowhere, so her ability to make something out of nothing will really be a benefi t to us this season.” “Kendall has improved so much since arriving on campus,” added Brownlie. “Her athle cism makes her a tough matchup for teams and I really expect her to con nue to get be er.” Brownlie is also excited about the addi on of Anes, Losert and Dahlin, as she feels all three could compete for a star ng spot. Anes came to AUM from Darton College in Georgia, but missed last season while recovering from a knee injury.

Losert was a former all-region performer with the Warriors, and Dahlin, a member of the G19 Elite division in Sweden, will also contribute immediately. “Stephanie has fully recovered from a knee injury last year and will be a key piece for us this season,” Brownlie said. “She is a great playmaker and is a very ba le-tested player. She will help us stay commi ed to our style of play, move the ball well and keep possession. She is calm and composed on the fi eld.” “Julia is an experienced player, who I hope will mesh well with our returning midfi elders,” Brownlie con nued. “She sees the game very well and can also play defender.” “Michaela is very technical with the ball,” Brownlie added. She is very poised and has a great vision for the game. She has a desire to score goals, so she could also factor in as an a acking midfi elder.” Newcomers Booth, Kowalski and Presor will also add depth to the posi on.

Forwards The forward posi on will likely provide the most ques ons for the upcoming season, as AUM returns just four of its 42 goals from 2013. Adding to the ques on marks was the loss of junior Courtney Omodei to a knee injury during Spring prac ce. “Losing Courtney was a big blow for us,” Brownlie said. “She was moving to the striker posi on and was really star ng to understand the role. Even though she is not able to play this season, she will con nue to be highly involved in the program and will need our support during her rehab. She has tremendous character and I expect will come back ready to contribute next season.” The posi on will be held down by the trio of freshman Booth, Kowalski and Presor, with assistance from McCardell. Booth comes to AUM from Palm Harbor, Fla., where she was a member of Florida’s Olympic Development Program. Kowalski is from Plymouth, England, and helped her school to the Bri sh Colleges Sports Championship the past three seasons, while Presor earned all-metro honors during her career at Pra ville High School. “Caroline is a relentless player, who is athle c and has great pace,” Brownlie said. “I think she will create problems for defenders and can help us in more of an a acking role. She has an enthusias c personality and will bring great camaraderie to our team.” “Megan likes to go toward the goal,” con nued Brownlie. “She does a nice job naviga ng through defenders and is a strong fi nisher. She has been playing a lot this summer in England, so hopefully she will come in and be sharp.” “Kourtney’s biggest hurdle will be adjus ng to the speed and physicality of the college game,” Brownlie added. “She has good fi nishing ability and has the tools to be a contributor to our team, but I think it will take some me to get her comfortable at this level.”
