The Antigua Backun clarinet is a great example of what can happen when a gifted designer and a world-class manufacturer team up to produce a new

product. This clarinet has a grenadilla wood body that is aged in a carefully controlled climate at the Backun Musical Services facility in Vacouver, Canada. From there, it is transported to the Antigua factory where the keywork is manufactured and the clarinet is assembled. Morrie Backun designed the exacting specifications that are utilized during the factory quality inspection to ensure a fantastic instrument that plays well right out of the box. And the clarinets are all tested again at the Antigua warehouse in San Antonio, Texas before they are shipped to you!

The Antigua Backun clarinet has several features that set it apart from other intermediate grenadilla clarinets:

• All wood work is performed on the same equipment as Morrie Backun’s professional line of clarinets, ensuring a consistent and reliable barrel, body and bell every time.

• The Antigua Backun clarinet plays very smoothly throughout the entire range of the instrument due to its complex bore, which means it has “curves” inside it, unlike a traditional conical bore instrument.

• Power-forged nickel silver keys plated with either silver or nickel ensure years of reliable service

• A French-style case with case cover gives a player plenty of room for accessories, and the Rico 5B mouthpiece gives an advancing player a great sound.

What is the ProOne project all about?I’ve been involved in the design of saxophones since the early 80’s with companies in France and Germany. Since leaving Germany in 1993, many ideas have gone through my head that had not been realized. The ProOne project is the expression of those ideas.

Let’s talk a little about Hybrid Rolled Tone Holes. What purpose do they serve?I always asked the question, “Why the same on every tone hole?” The obvious solution was to use straight tone holes on the body and a rolled tone hole edge on the bow and bell. This gives the best of both worlds.

You decided to go with a one-piece design for the ProOne soprano, as well as a totally new body. What’s special about it?My goal was to use modern ergonomics with a completely new bore and taper to return the soprano to a saxophone sound. The point where the neck detaches is a crucial part of the air column and this creates a lot of turbulence at this critical point, so saxophones with two necks can be difficult to control at the octave break.

What makes the ProOne baritone sax different from other baris?Of course, it uses all the normal ProOne features and type of brass used in all ProOne saxophones, as well as a completely new neck design that gives a better playing angle and less resistance. Also, the brace at the top bow was designed for strength and was redesigned in order to free up the vibrations at this very critical part of the instrument.
