Richmond Volleyball Club: Who We Are

Mission

Richmond Volleyball Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing athletes of all ages for amateur volleyball competition. The purpose of RVC is…

• To promote interest in the sport of volleyball

• Provide training in the skills and techniques of volleyball

• Foster teamwork, sportsmanship and an appreciation for health and wellness.

Vision

RVC is the recognized benchmark for both youth and adult volleyball programs on the East Coast.

Achieving and Defining our “Vision”

The Board of Directors and staff continue working towards and updating as needed the organization’s strategic plan.

1. Become the Old Dominion Region’s most successful USAV juniors program

with strong and diverse developmental programs.

2. Maintain an adult program that achieves high member satisfaction and

successful retention of juniors’ program alumni

3. Ensure sufficient financial resources

4. Develop and maintain a world class facility

5. Encourage HR (including staff, Board, and volunteer) retention and

development

6. Upgrade IT infrastructure and support systems.

Special Olympics 2014 was our fifth year hosting a Special

Olympics volleyball team and the regional tournament!

RVC provides volunteer coaches and a facility for ten weeks of practices each year. We also host the central region tournament that draws teams from all over the area as well as from out of state. All of this is made possible by many wonderful volunteers who coach, keep score and cheer on the participants.

Adult Programs

2014 Highlights

Saturday Night All Play (SNAP!) – Held 20 times throughout the year with

60 participants on average; 50% increase over last year

Happy Hour League

– Offered on Friday nights for 5 weeks of each season, this league provides an entry point for those new to the sport and new to RVC. A coach facilitates games and teaches individual skills. Each season, at least one team has formed to join the regular league the following season.

Sand Leagues

For over 13 years, RVC has offered sand volleyball at Three Chopt Recreation Center. This year quads divisions were held on Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons during the summer. Both leagues were filled to capacity.

High School League

New this year – we offered a Sunday evening league in the summer to give female high school players an opportunity to prepare for the fall high school season.

Leagues

– Number of teams remain about the same due to court availability; Summer did drop off which then affected our Fall numbers; we continue to turn away teams on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

– Slight growth in adult membership 1329 this year (ending in December) vs. 1301 the prior year; junior members add approx. 850 and our numbers will continue to grow until the end of our membership year (August)

Juniors ● More than 800 juniors program members in 2014

32 travel teams, 18 city teams and 24 club teams

● 16 and 17 National Girls won bids to the USAV Junior national

championships.

● 2 Boys Teams and 1 Girls teams won the Old Dominion Regional

Championships: 18-1, 17-1, 16 Nationals

● 18-1 won Boys East Coast Championships

● 16N and 17N claimed the first ever RVC National Qualifier Titles in Denver @

Colorado Crossroads.

2014 Highlights

•Private Lessons: 856 lessons (up 25%) were provided this year. •Sand: 1st year of a competitive sand program. We had 33 players which Competed in VA Beach, Richmond, and Raleigh. We had 4 teams win a Tournament championship.

•The “Middle School League” continued to grow with 12 teams. The league was expanded to include 5th-9th graders, creating a 4 vs. 4 league for 5th-6th graders.

•35 Summer Camps for all levels were held for ages 5-18 including Sand, College Prep and position specific camps.

•Itsy Bitsy Spikers (3-6 yr. old) program had 45 participants at RVC. In addition, a Satellite program was started offering Programs at 5 at different preschools. •Jumpin’ Juniors had a total of 385 registrations in the 4 sessions (some kids participated twice), this is up from 156 in 2013.

•We partnered with Fit Kids to offer after school clinics at 5 different Chesterfield County Elementary schools.

•Annual “Spirit” Rally held in December to kick off the 2015 season, celebrating our 25th anniversary of the Juniors Program.

–College commitments were recognized; bonfire, refreshments, and prize drawings added to the fun. John Kessel from USA Volleyball was the featured guest speaker.

Juniors’ Tournaments

Our large-scale tournaments hosted primarily at the Richmond Convention Center continue to be our largest fundraiser:

– 10th Monument City Classic (320 teams a 14% increase; 32 courts @ GRCC and 9 courts @ RVC North)

– Boys East Coast and South Atlantic Championships (110 teams in BECC a decrease of 6% and 160 in the SAC an increase of 35.5% for a total of 270 teams played at GRCC and RVC North)

Juniors’ Tournaments continued…

We also hosted the 17th Annual Virginia Volleyball Showcase, a kick off to the fall High School season, over the Labor Day weekend. 18 boys (increase of 12.5%)and 32 girls (increase of 14%) teams participated.

Additionally, RVC hosts Old Dominion Region tournaments almost every Saturday from January through early May. These tournaments generate approximately $60,000 in additional income each year.

While our tournaments are important to our success, they also contribute greatly to our local economy.

– $500, participation in Jr. Registration and Napkin Holder ads

• RVC Night at VCU October, 2014

– Over 50 guests attended, including Board Members, employees, sponsors and guests – use of the Sponsor room and food/beverages provided by VCU.

Other Events continued…

Mardi Gras 2014 member appreciation - over 125 attended and enjoyed

• Casino Games: Black jack, Texas hold ‘em, roulette and craps.

• Live Band: Anonymous- classic rock and blues

• Beer Tasting: Brown Distributing contributed a tasting section of five beers from different local breweries.

• New Orleans inspired food including oysters, jambalaya, muffulettas, cajun chili and king cakes

• Fantastic prizes

Member Marketplace

An event created to provide members with an opportunity to network and promote their businesses to other members.

• 13 vendors participated

Facility Enhancements/Maintenance

• The remainder of the roof at North was replaced. The portion over courts 1 – 8, concession area, upstairs meeting room, storage bay, and the offices.

• The metal roof above seating area was cleaned and sealed.

• The cooler compressor had to be repaired due to damage by the roofers.

• A HVAC unit over the offices at North was replaced due to old age and inability to repair.

• A HVAC unit at West was also replaced.

• A planting bed was built around the patio and along the handicapped ramp at North.

• Azaleas were planted all along the front of North.

• Six sets of team benches were added.

• Net standards were replaced on courts 1 and 2

• Additional buzzer was installed for courts 1 and 2.

RVC also donates to and supports other youth organizations. In particular, we are proud of our support of the Special Olympics.

Robison Fund Awards 2014

Financial Assistance Thanks to the continued success of our annual golf tournament, the commitment from our Board of Directors, and generous donors, 2014 marked the second year of award disbursements from the Roger Robison Fund established in 2005. A panel was formed

to review applications and 8 juniors received awards totaling $16,000 to offset expenses associated with playing volleyball during the 2014-2015 season. In addition,

in the fall of 2014, $600 was awarded to 5 athletes to offset the cost of Jumpin’ Juniors and the Middle School League.

“Love of the Game” At our 2014-2015 Spirit Rally, we

awarded Eric Rohr and Lauren Wells the “Love of the Game”

award for their exceptional sportsmanship, attitude, and work ethic. Each received $750 to offset

their playing expenses.

2014 Member Communications

Newsletters are sent to our e-mail list once per month – alternately focusing on adult programs and junior programs.

The RVC Facebook page, www.facebook.com/RichmondVolleyballClub, continues to be an important communication tool and has grown to 3300 fans

• 43% Male, 56% Female; age groups 25-34 and 18-24 represented the majority (27% and 22%); followed by 35-44 and 45-54 (grew to 17%)

RVC has dedicated LinkedIn, Flickr, Pinterest and YouTube sites. An Instagram site was added this year primarily to create interaction with younger followers. MeetUp group continues to promote SNAP, Happy Hour and other new member opportunities. The Member Business Directory continues to support networking opportunities for members.

2015 Priorities

• Replace DOS database and website

• Continue to build on successes of juniors programs including outreach programs with Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, Henrico PAL, and more.

• Continue to explore opportunities for growing adult programs
