2014 Annual Report
MissionOur mission is to help youth
transform harmful behavior and lead meaningful lives through mindfulness
meditation and emotional awareness.
“This class has helped me find inner peace. I find myself
meditating at home when I am about to lose my temper. It is helping me stay sane.”
– Youth from Camp Sweeney, San Mateo
Letter from the Executive Director
Roger MillerExecutive Director
2014 was a powerful year of transition for the MBA Project. The excellent work that my predecessor Samuel Himelstein did to expand our core programs for youth in juvenile justice settings and build our school based programs bore fruit. The organization and I personally am in a debt of gratitude to Sam and our strong instructor team for that excellent work. Over the past few years, the MBA Project has also been on a track to enhance the mindfulness mental health framework for our work. In late 2014, we hired Jennie Powe Runde to be our new Director of Clinical Services. She came to MBA with enthusiasm, smarts, deep experience with delivering services to high risk young people and a beautifulgroundedness that anchors our programs. The strong board, instructor, intern and office team that we've developed over the past year are all amazing. We're deeply blessed to have their support. We served 2,372 youth with quality mindfulness, meditation and emotional awareness programs in 2014. More importantly, the youth respect, appreciate and value our programs: 84% report that our classes help them manage their difficult emotions and 94% note that they decrease stress. Of course, there's nothing more than what the youth say about our programs themselves.
On behalf of the MBA Project team and the youth we serve, many thanks!

“I really appreciate you all coming here. And now everybody around the school kind of
connects more to each other and gets along.”— Student from Bridge Academy
“Meditation has been helping me sleep. Before I go to bed, I focus on my breathing. It helps.”
— Youth from San Mateo County Juvenile Hall
Impacting the lives of youthMeet Michael, a young man who
was able to cope with his grief when he attended MBA Project groups at
Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center.
WATCH HIS STORY
MBA brings youth together
During a session in San Mateo one youth participant, Shawn, shared about the death of his grandmother who had been his sole caregiver. He described how his grief over her death led him to make impulsive decisions and commit crimes. As he spoke about how much he loved his grandmother, he started to cry. “I’ve done some really bad stuff since then,” he said. Rodrigo, another youth participant, connected with this profound loss and guilt. He witnessed his cousin’s murder and blamed himself. Shawn reached out to Rodrigo, consoling him: “You can become a better person because of the lessons you learned from the experience; whatever happened in the past was in the past.” Seeing what others struggled with gave Shawn a new perspective on his own difficult emotions. The youth felt safe enough to connect, empathize and recognize their shared experiences, which led to greater collective insight and understanding.
