An Executive Letter

Dear Friends, 2014 celebrates not only our 42th year as an organization, but 42 years of making a difference in the lives of so many members. It’s 42 years of learning, friendship, growth, and success. During our 42 years of dedicated services to the community we have helped countless members to gain independence, build lasting relationships, and attain a rich and interesting life that all adults know. I would like to thank our staff, board, donors, and families as they have helped to hon-or AADD’s past and mission while working towards our future goals. AADD would not be what it is today without the trailblazers of the past from the original parents who gathered in their homes to the first executive director who grew our organization to the donors who made this all possible. With help and support AADD has built a proud legacy of community service that has continued to expand through the years. Our journey forward brings both promises for a bright future and challenges along the way. To strengthen our organization, we have implemented an intense one-year strategic planning session culminated in the organization developing a comprehensive five-year plan.

AADD members remind us that those with disabilities should not be defined by those disabilities, but rather by the possibilities they can achieve. With our help, members are able to achieve independence, self-pride, and social and behavioral skills. We provide our members with encouragement needed to succeed and are excited about the future role AADD will play this coming years in the lives of our over 170 members and in the communities we serve. Our members believe that a true friend recognizes their disabilities but emphasizes their possibilities. Thank you for supporting the Association for Adults with Developmental Disabilities.

Sincerely,

Larry I. Rubin, Executive Director

Our Mission

The Association for Adults with Developmental Disabilities (AADD) is a non-profit organization that provides much needed assistance and activities for special needs adults with intellectual disabilities ranging from such rare dis-orders as Familial Dysautonomia to more common autism disorders. It’s a segment of the community that is not often talked about. While special needs children have made it into the mainstream over the past few decades, adults with those same needs are rarely in the spotlight. The Association for Adults with Developmental Disabilities’ mission is to nurture personal relationships, positive work habits, and greater independence for intellectually disabled adults, 18 years of age and older, while supporting caregivers and increasing acceptance in the greater southeastern Pennsylvania community. Social interaction is the heart of human experience. For over forty years our goal has been to educate and enrich the lives of our members. AADD provides secure environments where members develop life skills from arranging transportation and manag-ing finances to forming and maintaining friendships. AADD helps members obtain employment, live on their own in apartments or in supervised group homes, form social networks, and make good personal choices for healthy living. The Association for Adults with Developmental Disabilities, having grown from the initial group of five families to today with over 170 members, takes members on trips, creates holiday celebrations, and meets weekly for rap ses-sions with professional facilitators that address members’ concerns and discuss topics such as etiquette and hygiene, as well as helping to make personal decisions about their lives and well being. Executive Director Larry Rubin says: “While these may sound like simple and insignificant activities, for our population they are critically im-portant life and behavior lessons that help them live as independently as possible. And as a result of this level of assistance and intimacy, our members consider us part of their families and we feel the same.”

42 Years of Making a Difference

in the Lives of Those We Serve

The Association for Adults with Developmental Disabilities began in 1973 by a group of five parents. The main premise of the group was to have a forum for their sons and daughters to get together and socialize after they graduated from high school. The small group met on Saturdays at a house on Susquehanna Road in Abington where they would hold dances, play games and socialize. The first fundraiser they held was a dinner, cooked by the parents and attended by approximately 50 people. The first donation received was given to them by Harry Levine, father of Cissie Vizak-Frantz. A Base Service Unit from Montgomery County sent out Bob Leon, a Social Worker, to start the Rap Sessions. Pretty soon, they outgrew the small house on Susquehanna Road and the group moved to St. Paul’s Church in Elkins Park. After many years at this location, a parent made a contact with Bill Ferstenfeld of Keneseth Israel Synagogue. Ever since, the synagogue’s youth lounge has been home to the Elkins Park Discussion Group. In November, 1975 AADD became a non-profit organization with a 501 (c)(3) determination from the IRS. Kim Weinberg was appointed the first Executive Director in 1978 and, as the group continued to grow, Rap Sessions extended to the Main Line and Spring House locations. These three groups still meet once a week to discuss life skills challenges pertaining to achieving independence.

The educational, cultural and recreational activities have increased from once a month, to every weekend. Along with social interaction, these outings are a chance for members to practice skills learned in Rap Sessions. The first annual fundraising event, called Key to Independence Day was held in May of 1983 and still continues each year to this day.

After moving administrative offices to the Pavilion in Jenkintown, PA in 1997, the group originally named Association for Developmental Disabilities/YAG (Young Adults Group) re-branded in 2002 as Adults with Developmental Disabilities or for short, “ADD.” Following this, in 2014, the agency re-branded itself yet again and is now officially “AADD,”

Our Services

Office Support All office staff support the members by advising them and answering their questions about any topic during the week from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Staff assist members to help them pay for their memberships and trips, obtain assistance and family driven money (FDM) from their county office of Behavioral Health/Developmental Disabilities, coordinating transportation, modify unacceptable behavior and receive assistance in problem-solving. Members are encouraged to handle as much of their decision-making, transportation and payment for trips and membership as they can. Members are also encouraged to develop office skills by volunteering in the AADD office or at the annual AADD fundraising event, Key to Independence Day.

Rap Sessions Discussion groups (Rap Sessions) are the cornerstones of the services offered by AADD. They are held in three strategic locations (Elkins Park, Main Line, and Springhouse) encouraging members from all over the Tri-county area to participate. The sessions provide an opportunity for members to identify and resolve concerns, discuss peer interaction and gain socialization skills. Members bring questions about friends, family, work, relationships, finances, intimacy, religion, etc. to these sessions. The sessions also provide a safe environment for our members to learn and make friends and promote independence, self pride, and enhance social and behavioral skills. The sessions give a sense of relief for their families, who know that their adult child has his/her own friends and a solid support system. In 2013-2014, AADD provided 300 hours of member-driven discussion and educational programming.

Supervised Weekend Outings The weekly outings to concerts, sporting events, theaters, movies, etc. help to enrich our members' lives. At these outings, others see our men and women behaving appropriately and enjoying the same events they do; helping to break down stereotypes and build community awareness. In addition, our members are able to practice their skills in listening, following directions, working together, and learning to communicate with others beyond the safety of the discussion group’s protective environments. With time these skills help to enhance our members' self-esteem and increase their ability to become active and productive members of the community. The goal of the supervised weekend outings is to ensure independence, self pride, and enhance social and behavioral skills with families and in the community. In 2013 - 2014, AADD held 49 weekend activities for our members including trips to amusement and recreational parks, picnics, arcades, museums, concerts, plays, movies, dances, sporting events, bowling trips and social networking events. The trips had a total attendance of 2,421 people. In July, our members attended our 7-day vacation trip to Pinegrove Dude Ranch in the Catskill Mountains of Kerhonkson, New York where they enjoyed swimming, line dancing, ping pong, country music, karaoke, horse back riding, relaxing by fire pits, and more!
