WE ARE ALL IN!My husband and I walked our

first born through the doors of Jackson Elementary for her first day of kindergarten in August of 1996. With a two year old in tow and a baby due in one month, we began our journey as AISD parents. Now, eighteen years later, that unborn baby is finishing her senior year at Abilene High, and in a few weeks we will have three AISD graduates in the family!

Having been a part of AISD for so many years, my family’s perspective spans across the spectrum of public education from start to finish. We have grown to appreciate the district on so many levels through first hand experiences with dedicated principals, staff, and teachers who inspire students in academics and leadership on every campus. We’ve benefitted from the rich diversity at the middle schools and high schools where neighborhoods merge together with cohesiveness of which other districts cannot boast. The decision to send our children to AISD all those years ago was a good one on which we have never looked back.

Seven years ago I discovered the Abilene Education Foundation and learned that since 2000, AEF has partnered with donors like you to support programs that change lives in our district. Teachers and administrators demonstrate their trust in us by participating in our payroll deduction program. This year twelve campuses had 100% participation, and our promise to these district employee donors is that every

penny of what they give goes to teachers and students. Our Teachers in the Limelight (TLC) program, funded by a team of generous donors, rests upon the philosophy that when a teacher is recognized and feels appreciated for his or her hard work, the winners of the trickle down effect are the students. Along the same line is our STAR Teacher Grants, which invite teachers to submit grant requests for special projects in their classrooms. Innovative and bright proposals are received each year, and donors from all walks of life have the privilege of being a part of the teaching excellence happening in AISD.

If the name of the game is consistency, then the COOL program most certainly is the winner. We are proud of its consistent growth and impressive results in helping seniors navigate the college application process and tracking them through their college years. Another jewel in AEF’s crown is the Young Masters. Stemming from a donor’s vision, this program provides talented high school artists an opportunity to earn a place in a juried art show with generous scholarship prizes. A group of dedicated volunteers and like-minded donors have worked to make this program a respectable springboard for students to launch college careers. AEF’s Young Masters has become a prototype and a source sought out by other entities across the state with similar interests.

Every program begins as a dream. AEF is a place to invest in dreams and visions with confidence that our competent staff

DEAR FRIENDS,As a 4th grader I entered an almost

brand new Fannin Elementary after moving to Abilene from a small farming community where my mom had served as the teaching principal. Esmé Glenn was my teacher and she realized my world of education had just become huge. Gently guiding me into a new learning experience my self-confidence blossomed. Following Fannin came North Junior High School (Franklin Middle School and now Martinez Elementary) and then Abilene High School. This district was home.

To serve as the first Executive Director of AEF and to be able to continue my passion to enrich education in our community has been one of the sweetest gifts God has given me. I not only have been blessed by working with volunteers who share my passion, I have gained their friendship. I could never have imagined the joy resulting from our board’s decision to hire me a decade ago.

After serving as the Executive Director of Abilene Education Foundation over the last 10 years, it is with a sense of pride and some regret, happiness and sadness, but great excitement for my future and the future of AEF that I announce my resignation as of May 31, 2015.

I look forward to a seamless transition to my successor Christine Curtis-Carr. Christine has a servant’s heart, great intelligence, and a passion for education. She is gifted with leadership qualities and creativity. She will continue to embody the mission of our foundation as you help her impact the lives of our students.

I have enjoyed every minute of the amazing opportunity to serve the Abilene Independent School District, its students,

teachers, and administrators. Thank you, our generous donors, for helping make AEF a Shining Star that helps light the way for education in our district.

-Jean McMillon, Executive Director

LOOKING FORWARD...I still remember my first day of

school. My Care Bear backpack in tote I waved goodbye to my parents and hopped on the school bus, excited about the day ahead. Although I would move to Bowie Elementary after just two years, I began my schooling at Jackson, followed by Jefferson Middle School and then Abilene High. Over the course of my education in AISD, I was fortunate to have excellent educators who provided me with not only a rigorous education, but also with the opportunity to explore, question and learn. It was in the halls of AISD I first discovered my abilities and talents, and for those of you from Abilene, I bet it was the same for you. As the incoming Executive Director, it is an honor to be the successor to such an outstanding leader, Jean McMillon. I look forward to continuing the important work of connecting our community with our schools in the years to come.

I am pleased to share the 2014 Annual Report with you. As you review the following pages, note the tremendous impact all our donors have had on the students, teachers and Abilene community.

Today there is a new generation of children walking the halls, perhaps some of them your own children or grandchildren, eager to learn. Thank you for giving to AEF, you truly help our children discover who it is they will become and what they need to succeed in this world.

- Christine Curtis-Carr, Successor to Executive Director

and hard-working board are dedicated to finding ways for dreams and visions to come true. Thank you for investing in your dream through AEF and letting us be a part of your vision for the students and teachers in AISD.

From that first day of kindergarten to this last graduation, my family has done a lot of living and growing. Soon we won’t have any kids in AISD, but that doesn’t stop my husband and me from wanting to ensure that good things continue to happen in our district; and they

will, thanks to donors like you who share our passion for excellence!P.S. Please mark your calendar to join us for Cajun Fest on April 9

during ArtWalk. You will see our board in action as we serve up authentic Louisiana crawfish and shrimp. Talented AISD students will be showcased on every corner, guaranteeing a good time while raising money for scholarships. See you there!

In his speech to the TLC nominees last May, Mr. Edwin Jennings spoke about the personal self-satisfaction he receives from funding the Edwin and Agnes Jennings Teaching Excellence Awards to outstanding teachers in the Abilene Independent School District. He gave high praise to the teachers in AISD, thanking them for their dedication and encouraging them to always remember they have chosen the best path of all, in a profession that has a lot of self-satisfaction.

In 2011, with the donation of 3,000 shares of ExxonMobile stock from Mr. Jennings, a permanent endowment was established in honor his parents Edwin J. Sr. and Agnes May Smith Jennings and to reward outstanding teachers making a difference in the lives of students in Abilene ISD. Mr. Edwin Jennings Jr. attended Alta Vista Elementary, Central School and graduated from Abilene High School in 1940. He was a member of the Abilene High School

Boys Band, winner of the math award, and valedictorian of his class. Edwin and Agnes Jennings always emphasized to their son the importance of studying hard and obtaining a college degree.

In 2014, Mr. Jennings pledged additional shares of stock worth $150,000 to increase the award amounts to each TLC campus winner and to add 5th grade math teachers to list the of eligible nominees. The legacy of his parents lives on in this endowment and will allow AEF to continue these awards yearly for generations to come!

Making the decision to help Abilene students who are trying to attend college came naturally to me. I was originally inspired by the efforts of the many excellent educators who helped lay the foundation of my education. In order to honor these amazing people, especially Royce Curtis, a stand-out mentor in my personal journey, I chose to invest in the community that did so much to help me in my formative years. When reviewing the available options, I learned how simple it could be to give back through the Abilene Education Foundation.

Joana and I have both experienced first-hand the difficulties of attending college on a limited income. Because of our personal experiences, we have become strong proponents of connecting deserving students with the resources that will help them unlock their potential. We take great satisfaction from knowing that the full benefit of our donations goes directly to the students. Furthermore, we have been able to further

increase our ability to give back because of the favorable tax consideration that we get from our donations.

The most important part of my giving process was making the personal commitment to create a significant and long-lasting impact for students in the Abilene community. While this commitment may mean something different for each of us, it is a vision we can all share. I enjoy helping amazing Abilene students gain access to college, and I hope there are many more people who appreciate the benefits of donating to one of Abilene Education Foundation’s funds.

Legacy donors choose to include AEF in their estate planning leaving a legacy of education for future AISD students. AEF legacy donors include Mike Dudley, Mindy Morris, Anonymous and Dr. Bracken and Joana Kolle.
