is the Seawolves’ lone returning SETTER, having split time in a ‘6-2’ offensive set last year. The former Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year showed impressive flashes as a rookie, including big performances in wins over 7th-ranked Western Washington and Seattle Pacific. True freshman Kristi Farley comes to UAA from Las Vegas, where she earned all-league honors and was a three-year start-ing setter at Centennial High. Green expects Farley, along with JC transfer Rachel Rutherford, to give the Seawolves several options in terms of offensive attacks. Rutherford (Pomona, Calif./Arizona Western Coll.) will also play DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST and provide yet another back-row talent to go along with reign-ing GNAC Newcomer of the Year Quinn Barker. Barker, a senior from Southern California, was UAA’s full-time LIBERO in 2013, ranking fourth in the GNAC with 4.64 digs per set and capturing GNAC Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week honors three times. Green will also welcome a pair of walk-ons from the Alaska prep ranks in 2014 as Dimond’s Taliyah Edwards and Palmer’s Cassidy Giese join the roster.

Like Sabado, returning junior Caitlin McInerney gives UAA an option at both right-side and MIDDLE BLOCKER. The former JC transfer played sporadically in her first year with the program, but Green says she was perhaps the team’s most improved player during spring practice. UAA also has two true middle blockers with the ability to be among the best in the league with reigning GNAC Freshman of the Year Erin Braun and Breanne Sytnyk. Braun, a 6-foot Southern Californian, was UAA’s Most Improved Player in 2013, breaking the 32-year-old freshman record with a .312 attack percentage, while rais-ing her numbers to .325 att%, 1.46 kps and 1.07 bps in league contests. Sytnyk is back from an injury redshirt season in 2013. The Manitoban ranked second on the team and 12th in the GNAC with 0.84 blocks per set as a true freshman in 2012, along with a .233 attack percentage. An experienced transfer, Texas A&M-Kingsville transfer Kayla McGlathery also joins the competition in the middle. An Idaho native, she started every match for her old club in 2013, registering a .207 attack percentage and 0.70 bps. Returning sophomore Morgan Hooe

Coming off his program’s fourth NCAA Tournament berth in the last five sea-

sons, Alaska Anchorage head coach has good reason for to believe the 2014 Seawolves will compete for a Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship and yet another playoff bid. The optimism surrounding the Seawolf program stems from that fact that nine returning players – all of whom saw regular action – return from last year’s club that went 21-10 and finished runner-up by just one match in the GNAC standings. “I’m really excited about this year because I think we have more competitive depth at every position than at any time since I’ve been here,” said Green, who begins his seventh season at UAA with a 111-60 record. “Our players should push each other in practice, and I think we’ll have excellent leadership with eight upperclass-men on the roster.” At no position is the Seawolves’ depth more apparent than at OUTSIDE and RIGHT-SIDE HITTER, where return-ing AVCA Second Team All-American Katelynn Zanders leads a talented core. The 5-9 junior from Anchorage (South HS) ranked third in the GNAC with 3.69 kills per set and led the team with 13 double-doubles, capturing All-GNAC honors as well. Zanders begins 2014 No. 4 all-time at UAA in kills average and is on pace to reach 1,000 career kills this season. Former JC transfer Brooke Pottle, 5-9 from Peoria, Ariz., came on strong in her first season, notching 2.31 kills and 2.66 digs per set to rank third on the team in both categories. Pottle will be joined by fellow veteran Sarah Johnson on the outside. Johnson, a 6-1 junior from Anchorage, has played in every set her first two campaigns, while maintaining a 4.0 overall grade-point average. Making the position even stronger, former Dimond High star Leah Swiss will try to crack the lineup as a true freshman. On the opposite side, two-time All-GNAC performer Julia Mackey should return fully recovered from a knee injury that brought an early end to her 2013 campaign. Before bad luck struck, the Fairbanks prod-uct helped boost UAA to a 9-0 GNAC start with league numbers of 3.53 kps and .348 attack percentage, and captured a GNAC Player of the Week award in September. Complementing Mackey on the right side will be yet another former Alaska prep star in senior Maureen Sabado. After bat-tling an injury early in 2012, the Kodiak product bounced back last year to provide a consistent presence, averaging 1.54 kills and 0.63 blocks to aid the playoff push.

record that culminated in the 2007 NJCAA Div. I national champion-ship. The Cougars finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in all of Green’s seasons. In his final three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green’s tutelage, the Cougars earned a total of 10 first-team and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC’s players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. In 2011, Green was inducted into the NJCAA’s Hall of Fame (encompassing all sports) for his accomplishments at WNCC. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

CHRIS GREENHead Coach • 7th Season

In six seasons at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage volleyball program, head

coach Chris Green has led the Seawolves to one of the most remarkable turn-arounds in collegiate volleyball, making the Seawolves into annual contenders in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and capturing four NCAA Tournament appearances in the past five years.

The 2013 campaign saw Green’s Seawolves finish 21-10 — mark-ing the program’s unprecedented sixth straight winning season — and earn an NCAA trip, where they lost to eventual national runner-up BYU-Hawaii. With its 15-3 GNAC record, UAA was runner-up by just one match, placing fourth or higher in the 10-team league for the fifth straight year as well. Green captured the GNAC’s co-Coach of the Year award, while producing the league’s Freshman (Erin Braun) and Newcomer and Newcomer (Quinn Barker) of the Year. With Katelynn Zanders earning AVCA All-America honors in 2013, Green has now coached three All-Americans, three honorable mention All-Americans, two GNAC Players of the Year, four GNAC Newcomers of the Year, two Freshmen of the Year, and 10 All-GNAC First Team selections in his tenure at UAA. The 2010 and 2011 squads recorded identical 18-9 marks and advanced to the NCAAs, with the 2011 team coming just one win shy of sharing the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title. After being picked to finish seventh in the 2009 GNAC preseason coaches’ poll, Green’s squad wound up winning the league by three full matches, boosted by a school-record 13-match win streak. The Nebraska native earned both the GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region coach-of-the-year awards as the Seawolves tied for the best winning percentage (.742), posted the second-most victories in pro-gram history (23) and won their first-ever NCAA match, upsetting Hawaii-Hilo in a 5-set thriller. In 2008, Green took the reins of a Seawolf program that had gone 17-58 over the previous three campaigns and produced a solid 15-14 mark. The Seawolves captured the title of their own UAA Invitational and recorded their first win over a ranked team in almost a decade when they beat then-No. 8 Augustana. Under Green’s tutelage, outside hitter Rhea Cardwell became UAA’s first volleyball All-American. Following four straight NJCAA Final 4 appearances and the 2007 national title, Green made the jump from junior college to the NCAA Division II level in the spring of 2008. He spent the previous nine sea-sons (1999-07) as the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb. Green built a powerhouse program at WNCC, compiling a 453-55

Founded in 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 77 NCAA Division II Top 10 nation-al team finishes in 15 of the 16 sports it sponsors. Six GNAC teams earned Top 10 finishes last fall, including three by Alaska Anchorage. The Seawolves finished fourth in women’s cross country, seventh in men’s cross country and ninth in men’s indoor track and field. The men’s indoor finish by UAA was the best-ever by a GNAC team in that sport. Simon Fraser and Western Washington advanced their men’s and women’s soccer teams, respectively, to the NCAA national semifinals, while SFU also placed sev-enth in women’s cross country. Three GNAC teams have won NCAA Division II national titles, most recently Western Washington in men’s basketball in 2012. Alaska Anchorage has had 17 Top 10 national finishes in GNAC sports, which trails only Seattle Pacific (24) and Western Washington (19). UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 16 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

UAA ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFFCHANCELLORTOM CASE

Tom Case, Lt. Gen. USAF (Ret.), became chancel-lor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May

2011. Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating

officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace Corporation. Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals. In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus. UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population. With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research. Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending.Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, son-in-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the National War College, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program. He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North. He is an avid pilot and, of course, a great Seawolf fan.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSKEITH HACKETT

Entering his second year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Keith Hackett

has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA pro-gram for unprecedented growth and success as a new era begins in 2014-15. Since arriving on Oct. 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen

the planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that will transform the UAA campus – along with expanded hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Under his leadership, the department has developed an official strate-gic plan that will guide the decision-making process and allow the depart-ment to maintain a focus on the mission of Seawolf Athletics. A university and administrative management executive with 37 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community, and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement, developing partnerships with Global Spectrum to manage the Alaska Airlines Center, Front Row Marketing to oversee corporate partnerships, and Paciolan for ticketing. Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena was also apparent in Hackett’s first year. In 2013-14, the Seawolves not only finished 16th of 315 institutions nationally in the NCAA Div. II Learfield Director’s Cup, but also produced 25 All-Americans, nine NCAA Championships team qualifications and four Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles, while UAA student-athletes combined for a 3.18 overall grade-point average. Hackett came to UAA after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities with specific teams, Hackett was involved with donor relations and major gifts, budget, human and physical resource management, and alumni and community relations at Nevada. As a key member of the Wolf Pack’s senior leader-ship team, he was responsible for oversight of all athletics department capital projects, development of the department’s first athletic facilities master plan, and event management for all home contests. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive Vice President for Special Projects and was Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive Vice President and Provost at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla., from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 38 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.

MUNICIPALITY OF

ANCHORAGEWith city boundaries that stretch

to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 290,000 people are lucky to call Anchor age home. On a glob-al scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an inter-national air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Hundreds of flights arrive daily at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, shut-tling about 5 million passengers per year through the heart of one of the world’s top tourism destinations. Anchorage is a recreational para-dise, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved

the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 15-20 degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfort-able climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 moose, many often seen on UAA’s cam-pus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzlies, foxes, wolves, lynx, wol-verines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here while red and king salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.

and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six sce-nic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, it is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a vari-ety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. In fact, the Chugach is one of six mountain ranges visible from Anchorage. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach, Anchorage is located in a relatively temperate zone, with a climate that resembles San Francisco in

Alaska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas.

Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Also known as Mt. McKinley, the collosal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses, along with the state’s six other National Parks.
