MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR

In this past year, Winnipeg has experienced the impact of the opening of the long awaited Canadian

Museum for Human Rights. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra took the opportunity of this

significant opening to feature music and performances that spoke to the principles of human rights,

freedom, and creative expression. From our opening concert, through the New Music Festival, the

performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and our year-end program, this connection between

human rights and music was explored and celebrated. The WSO performed as part of the opening

ceremonies for the facility and later in the year had the chance to stage its first ever flash mob

performance in this fascinating space.

It gives me great pleasure to report the eighth consecutive year of an operating surplus for the

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. This is a remarkable financial achievement for the WSO. Each year, there are many challenges and difficulties

in maintaining the financial stability and growth for an orchestra. This sustained period of financial stability has gradually moved the WSO

into a position in which it can more effectively weather economic changes and new competition in the marketplace.

We look at the 2014-15 Season with gratitude for the generous support of our local community. For all of those who subscribed to the

concerts, for those who purchased single tickets, for the corporations that sponsored and made donations, for the public sector cultural

funding bodies that continued to support our work, for the companies and individuals who supported our fundraising events and galas, for

the many individuals who gave generously to ensure that our community maintains a first class orchestra, we all express sincere thanks.

As always, the President and Chair of the Board of Directors has the benefit of working with so many dedicated board members, staff

members and musicians. I want to thank my fellow board members, our Music Director Alexander Mickelthwate, and our Executive Director,

Trudy Schroeder for their contributions to the success of this past year. I also want to thank my Vice-Presidents, Terry Sargeant and Richard

Turner for their continued support, encouragement, and efforts on behalf of the WSO.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

At the heart of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s work each year is the desire to delight our audiences

with experiences of music that they find to be entertaining, refreshing, magical, and profound. The range

of public programs presented by the WSO, and the privilege of sharing in the performances of the Royal

Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Opera means that we have so many ways to connect with and provide

services for our community. It seems that as we have made significant efforts to better serve the

community, the community has also surrounded the WSO with support and generosity.

In the broader orchestral world there continues to be much uncertainty and concern for the future. At

the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra we experience significant challenges each year as well, but through

the dedicated efforts of everyone in the organization, we have also achieved many significant things in

the past year. There were record high subscription sales, donations, and contracted services. The range of presentations and concerts were

broad and engaging. We found ways to connect with many different types of audiences, and we tried some ideas that were new to us.

After many years of slow and steady growth of the WSO’s Endowment Fund which is held in the Winnipeg Foundation, there was a surge in the

fund revenues that came to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in this year. We have gradually added to our internal reserves over the years, and

we are seeing the benefits that come from having the capacity to address the periods of high needs from internal resources rather than

depending on external lines of credit. All of this speaks to the benefits of enhanced stability that we have earned slowly over the past eight years.

New musicians, staff members, and board members joined the organization, and we had long time members of the organization retire. We

express special thanks to Margaret Askeland, cello; Suzanne McKegney, viola; John Helmer, trombone and John Bacon, Director of Finance and

Administration for their years of dedicated service to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. We wish you well in your new projects and activities,

and your regular presence with us will be missed. For all those on the board, staff, volunteer groups, and in the orchestra, thank you for your

energy, enthusiasm and inspiration.

With much effort, many processes of trimming costs, and much generosity from friends and supporters at the end of the year, we are able to

celebrate a year end operating surplus for the eighth consecutive year. Each of these modest surpluses puts the WSO in a slightly more resilient

and stable situation. Our aim is to ensure that we make very fine music available to our community today, and we also want to put in place

resources so that future generations of Manitobans will continue to enjoy the services of a first class orchestra.

WSO Annual Report – 2014-2015 Season I 3

Page 6: 2014-2015 Annual Report - Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

My ninth season for me personally was every bit as memorable as the others I have been so privileged

to be a part of with our wonderful WSO. So much great music was performed in our last season, and

with such dedication!

Our season theme was human rights, as we recognized the opening of our magnificent new Canadian

Museum for Human Rights. Such music as Aaron Copland’s Canticle of Freedom and his Third

Symphony, plus Finlandia by Sibelius and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony underscored ideals that are so

important today and so manifest in our art.

Carrying on with our festival plan, this year’s was dedicated to Nordic music. We welcomed two young

soloists from Iceland and presented music by Nordic composers during a week of music and special

events of Nordic focus.

Other soloists included the 2009 Van Cliburn Piano Competition winner Nobuyuki Tsujii. His performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto

was so moving, you realize why he touches audiences around the world wherever he plays. Natasha Paremski is one of today’s most exciting

pianists and we were pleased she could open our season. Cellist Julie Albers gave us the wonderful Elgar Cello Concerto. Our own associate

concertmaster Karl Stobbe and principal clarinet Michah Heilbrunn again showed the first class soloist level from right within our orchestra.

Our guest conductors Aziz Shokhakimov, Daniel Raiskin, Jeanne Lamon and Gerard Schwarz were welcomed enthusiastically both by our

musicians and audiences.

Our New Music Festival continued to “push the envelope,” inciting lots of fresh and responsive comment by engaged audiences.

My special thanks to Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano, who not only assisted me in my work but shouldered the majority of our exciting

Pops, SoundBytes, Concerts for Kids and Specials during the season. Our season literally had something for everyone!

I want to thank everybody in the administration and the board for your dedication and support in making the WSO a crown jewel in

Winnipeg’s arts community.

2014-2015 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

Alexander’s ninth full season as music director continued to

display our orchestra’s stimulating programming of well-known

masterworks and new discoveries to excite WSO audiences, with

special regard for the opening of the Canadian Museum for

Human Rights.

A broad sampling of the core symphonic literature in the

Masterworks series was highlighted, but also programs

specifically dedicated to inspired ideals of human rights and

freedom in Aaron Copland’s Canticle of Freedom and his Third

Symphony with its famous Fanfare for the Common Man finale,

Sibelius’ Finlandia and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Under the direction of eminent guest conductor Gerard

Schwarz, a much-anticipated performance of Copland’s Third

Symphony was a season highlight (what magnificent brass

playing!). The program also included music by Native American

composer Jerod Tate with narration by Justice Murray Sinclair,

plus John Williams’s Three Pieces from Schindler’s List featuring

our own Karl Stobbe in the solo violin role.

Our Fall Nordic Festival gave our audiences a chance to immerse

themselves in the special musical language of the featured

composers from Norway, Iceland, Finland and Denmark, with

Icelandic soloists Sigrun Edvaldsdottir (violin) and Vikingur

Olafsson (piano) joining the orchestra. Special events took place

over the week to further celebrate our Nordic musical focus. The

orchestra truly shone in performances of Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4,

and this theme/composer-based festival concept holds much

promise going forward.

Other Masterworks programs included the return of pianist

Natasha Paremski in Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, a moving

performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto performed by Julie Albers

and a program of music from the classical and Baroque periods

led by Tafelmusik’s Jeanne Lamon, with WSO principal clarinet

Micah Heilbrunn performing Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. The

orchestra was highlighted in performances of Rachmaninoff’s

Symphony No. 3 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 under

Alexander’s direction.

2009 Van Cliburn Piano Competition winner Nobuyuki Tsujii

returned to our stage with a memorable reading of Beethoven’s

Emperor Concerto. The keyboard wizardry of duo-pianists

Anderson and Roe delighted our audiences over Valentine’s Day

in a suitable program for the occasion. Other guest conductors

included the return of the young Russian Aziz Shokhakimov and

the WSO debut of Daniel Raiskin from Germany.

In his second season as resident conductor, Julian Pellicano took

charge of a wide variety of programs, winning audiences and

orchestra members alike with his excellent musicianship and

engaging personality throughout our Pops, SoundBytes and

outreach offerings.

Our choral programs continued in strong fashion with

contributions from major Manitoba choral institutions: the

Mennonite Festival Chorus, Prairie Voices, the University of

Manitoba Singers, the Canadian Mennonite University Chorus

and the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir.

Our theme-based SoundBytes series entered its fifth season

with typically eclectic programs. This three-concert series

offered a stimulating product-mix for both new and seasoned

listeners. The brilliant young pianist and composer Emily Bear

dazzled our audiences to open the series. The Chicago

Symphony Orchestra’s acclaimed and enlightening Beyond the

Score© presentation of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony attracted

another large audience. Charlie Chaplin’s The Circus closed

Soundbytes, the orchestra performing the score live to a

screening of the classic movie.

Our Pops season offered a wide mix of music and styles for all to

enjoy. Pianist, singer and arranger Mike Janzen together with

vocalist Sarah Slean gave us a compelling new look on

Broadway standards. Randy Bachman brought his new

symphony show to the Centennial Concert Hall. Guest

conductor Jack Everly returned with a splendid look-back to

Hollywood of old, as did our live

performances of the classic musical film

Singin’ in the Rain, enhanced with hosting

by Patricia Kelly, wife of the movie’s late star,

the legendary Gene Kelly.

Our outreach department was especially busy

in the 2014-2015 Season. Alexander and the

orchestra visited five high schools throughout

the city in the aptly titled Up Close and

Orchestral series, promoting the season and

filling the various gyms and auditoriums with

great music. Similarly, our Adventures in Music

series in February brought approximately

15,000 elementary school students to the

Centennial Concert Hall for a highly

successful concert that featured over 2000

dancers, singers, entertainers and plenty of

symphonic inspiration from our musicians.

Our Great-West Life, Concerts for Kids series

again proved highly successful, both in the

lively programs and engaging pre-concert activities. Magic

Circle Mime Company kicked off the season in a musical

program with the company’s special brand of arresting visuals.

WSO mascot Manny Tuba was back in a special home-grown

show. Dandi Productions and L’Arsenal à musique rounded out

our entertaining series for young listeners.

Once again, Winnipeg new music-lovers’ hearts and souls were

warmed in the middle of our cold winter by the 2015 New Music

Festival (NMF). Curated by Alexander and Matthew Patton, this

year’s Festival featured appearances and music by composers

John Luther Adams (his Pulitzer Prize-winning work Become

Ocean), Georg Friedrich Haas and Mason Bates, with special

appearances by the Arditti Quartet and pianist Ursula Oppens,

plus a host of pre and post-concert performances, speakers and

activities. The Pop Nuit portion of NMF proved as popular as

ever, the young audiences showing their pleasure post-concert.

ARTISTIC AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

The orchestra continued to forge artistic connections with the

community in several notable partnerships. The ongoing

success of the WSO’s annual collaboration with the River East

Transcona School Division was again in evidence for a sold-out

November concert in the Concert Hall. Local students and

teachers partnered with the WSO in this program.

The WSO’s annual MTS Rising Stars concert was held in April and

featured a performance of Mozart’s Requiem with an exciting

group of young Manitoba soloists and a 300 piece choir.

An October performance of Haydn’s The Creation was given in

partnership with the University of Manitoba Singers. Special

performances of Handel’s Messiah were presented in April in

Steinbach and Winkler with the choral group Canzona.

Winnipeg’s famed Rusalka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble joined the

WSO in a rousing performance in May. Partnering with the

Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir within its series, our players

appeared in a special performance of Brahms’s A German

Requiem at St. Boniface Cathedral in March. Our orchestra was

also featured in the closing concert of the Winnipeg Organ

Festival at Westminster Church in July.

The longstanding highly successful Virtuosi Concerts series

continued its partnership with the WSO at the University

of Winnipeg’s Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall. We look forward to

an ongoing relationship with the University of Winnipeg in

presenting exciting theme-based programs for Virtuosi.

Summer appearances found the WSO performing at the Lyric

Theatre in Assiniboine Park, The Forks on Canada Day and

its annual appearance at Kenora’s new dockside Lucia

Melnick Stage.

The WSO continues to serve as the musical foundation for

Manitoba Opera and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, bringing to

their audiences the full symphonic resources their productions

require.

BEYOND THE PERIMETER / TOURS

The WSO regularly packs up instruments and musicians and

heads out on the open road to take the full orchestra to

communities throughout the province and beyond. Our regular

concert series in Brandon presented a wide range of musical

offerings, as we have done, four times per season, ensuring that

music lovers in the Western regions of Manitoba can experience

the wonder of live symphonic music .

December was especially busy, as the orchestra embarked on its

Power Smart Holiday Express Tour with family-focused holiday

concerts in Steinbach, Lac du Bonnet, Gladstone and Portage la

Prairie. Thanks to the Richardson Foundation, the WSO’s Adventures

in Music education series saw May performances in Brandon.

Approximately 1500 elementary students were in attendance.

This program works closely with the school divisions to provide

musical content and preparation for the students so that they

find the programs stimulating and memorable.

The WSO continues to connect with rural schools through the

rural Bach to School program where a group of five musicians

visits four schools in small communities to introduce more than

1500 students in Grades 1-8 to live music. Our Music Alive

program brings WSO Associate Principal Horn Ken MacDonald

and composer Andrew Balfour to three schools each year in the

Northern part of the province.

As always, the WSO continues to explore touring opportunities

in Manitoba to ensure that all Manitobans may regard the

orchestra as their own.

The WSO's partnership with Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries

continued with four performances at the newly renovated

Club Regent Event Centre. The orchestra performed with

guest artists Roch Voisine, The Midtown Men, Lea Salonga

and Jeans N' Classics.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

The WSO’s exciting and innovative education programs engaged over 35,000

students throughout the 2014-2015 season. Reaching students from across the

province, these programs introduce orchestral music and instruments to students

of all ages with an educational approach and in an exciting and engaging

manner, offering a “backstage door” approach that creates opportunities for

students and community members to truly engage in the life and music of a

symphony orchestra.

The four key areas of the WSO’s education and outreach programs are:

• Providing opportunities for Manitobans to make music, listen to music

and learn about music in connection with the WSO.

• Creating personal connections and meaningful experiences with WSO

musicians and conductors, and the music of our orchestra.

• Presenting programming that supports continuous learning so that patrons

of all ages have multiple touch-points with the WSO as a young person

and into adulthood, and therefore a long-term connection to the WSO.

• Being a resource to our community on many levels including great

music-making, music listening, educational resources, innovative ideas

and programming, etc. We want to be the ‘go to’ place when people think

of excellence music and programs.

In the spring, the full orchestra visited five high schools as part

of the Up Close and Orchestral program. Led by Music

Director Alexander Mickelthwate, this program featured a

variety of music, from Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music to a

rousing arrangement of Pharell Williams’ Happy. Over 3,500

students from across Winnipeg and as far away as Winkler

received a rare opportunity to meet the WSO and experience

an “up close and personal” orchestra performance in their

school. As part of the WSO’s annual student competition, these

concerts featured 18-year-old student violinist Gregory Lewis

performing Tchaikovsky’s Valse-scherzo. Two students from

each school were invited to perform the canon part on anvils

as part of Verdi’s Anvil Chorus and one lucky student at each

concert received their debut by conducting Strauss’ Radetsky

March with the WSO. All the high school students were invited

to attend the closing weekend of the WSO’s Masterworks series

on May 8, 2015. More than 300 students enjoyed this concert

at no cost.

Destination WSO brings students directly into the Masterworks

concert experience via an open dress rehearsal. School groups

can also book tours, attend concerts at discounted prices, or

participate in sectional clinics and master classes with WSO

musicians. In total, more than 800 middle and high school

students and chaperones, from seven different Manitoba

communities as well as from Saskatchewan and Ontario

attended these rehearsals. Several of these schools attended

evening concerts at discounted rates. Music Director Alexander

Mickelthwate hosted the rehearsals and participated in a Q&A

session with the students.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

The Bach to School program, comprised of eleven ensemble

groups from within the orchestra sections – string, woodwind,

brass and percussion – visited more than 40 schools across

Manitoba; reaching over 10,000 students from Kindergarten to

Grade 8. Bach to School has a strong reach to many communities

including rural, inner city, junior high and high schools covering 11

Manitoba school divisions. In the 2014-2015 season, the Bach to

School repertoire was connected to Adventures in Music as a way

to create a continuous learning experience for student participants

across several interactions with the WSO. WSO musicians were

provided a professional development opportunity in the autumn

to explore how to integrate Adventures in Music elements into

their Bach to School presentations. Leading up to Bach to School

performances, classroom teachers are provided with a Bach to

School guide to help prepare students for the upcoming visit.

The Nursery Notes program is an innovative program designed to

reach pre-school aged children. A WSO string ensemble shared

presentations in 9 different nursery schools across Winnipeg and

connected 200 children with music and instruments through

interactive activities. The 2014-2015 Nursery Notes season featured

a new, specially designed program to teach children about

emotions and how music can help express emotions. The WSO also

partners with the River East Transcona School Division each year to

present this program as part of their nursery school classes.

The WSO presented the fifth year of the Musical Discoveries

program for Grades 1-3 students. This series presents three concerts,

with 4,307 students attending in 2014-2015. This program continues

to grow in attendance each year. This year’s program,“Manny Tuba

Goes to the Circus” featured WSO mascot Manny Tuba and children’s

entertainer Mr. Mark as they explored the performers and animals

of the Circus. Guest artists in these concerts included an aerialist,

juggler, clowns, unicyclist and contortionist. Teachers received a

curriculum-based Study Guide that included lesson plans to teach

children about the music and prepare them to attend.

Adventures in Music, the WSO’s widest-reaching and most

comprehensive education program, presented eight concerts in

February and March at the Centennial Concert Hall, and two

concerts in May at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.

Over 15,000 elementary school students attended this program.

“One Voice” explored human rights through the themes of

freedom, peace and equality, in celebration of the recent opening

of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Led by Resident

Conductor Julian Pellicano, these concerts included more than

2,000 students performing alongside the WSO in choir, recorder

and string ensembles. These concerts also featured student

artwork during the performance Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet:

Dance of the Knights.

Prior to each Concerts for Kids concert, the WSO presents an hour of

pre-concert activities for children aged 4-9. In partnership with Music

for Young Children, these activities include a craft station, rhythm

ensembles, an instrument petting zoo, and a conducting station.

WSO mascot Manny Tuba attends each concert, inviting children to

learn about music, pose for pictures, and bring their friends.

In partnership with the University of Manitoba Marcel A. Desautels

Faculty of Music, WSO musicians attend University of Manitoba

Symphony Orchestra rehearsals. This Mentorship Program

provides the opportunity for young university orchestra students

to be mentored by professional orchestra musicians. Fourteen

WSO musicians participated in rehearsals and sectionals to offer

technical expertise, suggestions for rehearsing excerpts, and to

demonstrate leadership skills.

The Apprenticeship Program provides string players currently

enrolled in a Master of Music program or in a performance degree

at the undergraduate level at the University of Manitoba the

opportunity to rehearse and perform as an orchestral musician

with the WSO. They learn about preparing for orchestra auditions

and rehearsals, performing with an orchestra and making

connections to prepare them for a professional career in music.

This year, a cellist and a violist participated by performing in the

Adventures in Music program. They also developed and gave a

30-minute presentation at two elementary schools as part of their

professional development.

For the fourth year, the WSO partnered with the National Arts

Centre Orchestra to present the Music Alive Program, which aims

to support and inspire musical learning in schools. WSO Associate

Principal Horn player Ken MacDonald travelled with aboriginal

musician and composer Andrew Balfour to three remote rural

communities to work with students in each school. The musicians

spent a full day at each school they visited in the communities of

Waterhen, Rorketon, and Crane River, connecting with the students

and making music together.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS

The WSO is committed to being an integral part of our

community and bringing orchestral music to new audiences.

Culture Days took place across the country on the weekend

of September 26-28, 2015. The WSO held an event on

September 27 in partnership with Manitoba Opera, the

Centennial Concert Hall and Music for Young Children. This

included an open house at the Concert Hall with tours, a

chance to pick your seat, try on costumes, performances by

the Manitoba Opera and Music for Young Children, and child-

friendly music activities.

The WSO and the River East Transcona School Division

presented a special community concert at the Centennial

Concert Hall on November 4, 2014. Building on the success of

previous years, these concerts showcased 330 students from

the division who performed with the WSO in divisional

bands, a recorder ensemble and a guitar ensemble. The

concert also features student involvement through various

visual arts components. This is a very special partnership that

engages many students, teachers, school administration and

senior administration from the division.

The Musicians in Healthcare program offered musical

presentations by a WSO string quartet as well as a musical

duo featuring WSO principal harpist Richard Turner and

flutist Laura MacDougall at various healthcare centres across

Winnipeg. Through the performance of live music, this

program promotes the health and healing of hospital

patients, visitors and staff in the community.

Share the Music is a unique partnership with community

organizations that enables economically disadvantaged children,

their families and adults to attend WSO performances. Because of

the generous donations by corporations and individuals, more

than 2,000 tickets were provided across the province this season.

The organizations distribute these tickets free of charge to people

who want to hear our orchestra.

Through the Musicians in the Making program, the WSO

provided performance opportunities for young musicians in our

community. This season, 35 local ensembles and students from

private studios performed in the Piano Nobile Level prior to each

Pops and SoundBytes concert in Winnipeg as well as at the

Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium Lobby at every WSO in

Brandon concert throughout the season.

The Soundcheck program offers young people ages 30 and under

the opportunity to attend WSO concerts all season for only $15 per

concert. In the 2014-2015 season, the Soundcheck membership

reached over 3,000 people. The program kicked off the year on

September 26 with the signature Dust off the Dress event. More

than 200 young people came dressed to the nines to celebrate the

launch of the WSO season and mingle with WSO musicians and the

music director. The event was augmented by the Aveda Institute

Pop-Up Beauty Bar, selfie station, live jazz and a reception. The

Soundcheck program also hosted a pre-concert Backstage Tour &

Tasting which included a fine oil and vinegar tasting provided by

Frescolio in the Green Room along with a chance to mingle with

WSO musicians and Music Director Alexander Mickelthwate. The

season concluded with a pre-concert ballroom dance lesson

provided by Ted Motyka Dance Studio to prime Soundcheck

members and their guests for Ballroom with a Twist.

On April 8, 2015, the WSO presented the MTS Rising Starsconcert, bringing together some of the most talented students in

Manitoba to perform on stage with the WSO under the direction

of WSO Music Director Alexander Mickelthwate. This year’s

collaboration included the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra,

and a combined choir of 300 high school singers from across the

province. The concert featured several soloists, including four vocal

soloists from the University of Manitoba Marcel A. Desautels

Faculty of Music, and three student competition winners: Christina

Thanisch-Smith (soprano), Claire Ploughman (marimba), and Paul

Williamson (piano). The crowning achievement of this concert was

the performance of the Mozart Requiem.

SISTEMA WINNIPEG

Sistema Winnipeg continues to gain momentum as it completed

its fourth successful year, now operating in two schools with a total

of 110 students participating five days a week from 3:30pm – 6:30pm.

This program is a partnership with the Seven Oaks School Division

and the Winnipeg School Division and seeks to promote social

changes through music in an intensive group-based orchestral

environment that inspires and supports students in achieving their

full potential. The program values inclusion and accessibility,

artistic excellence, community building and mentorship in

achieving its goals.

In addition to the violin, viola, cello and double bass instruction, the

program offers a well-rounded educational experience for participants.

In 2014-2015, Sistema Winnipeg implemented weekly yoga classes to

promote physical and mental awareness, and special project units to

introduce students to new opportunities such as Métis fiddling, dance,

world percussion and Japanese Taiko drumming.

Sistema Winnipeg students performed more than 20 times in the

community at various events and functions. Each Sistema school

location presented monthly Family Night performances for family

and friends to see the progress of their children. Term-end concerts

were also held in December and June, featuring all 110 students

together to audiences of more than 200 people including parents,

supporters and community members.

The performance highlights of the year included performances

alongside WSO musicians at the December 2014 Prairie Christmas

Celebration, February 2015 Adventures in Music, and May 2015

Sistema Winnipeg Changing Lives Fundraiser. The latter performance

featured guest performances by artists Allie Fontaine, Simon

Miron, and Anna Lisa Kirby, and helped raise $10,000 for the

Sistema Winnipeg program.

In December 2014, Sistema Winnipeg bid a heartfelt farewell to

WSO Director of Education and Sistema founding administrator

Tanya Derksen as she departed Winnipeg to pursue new and

exciting endeavors with the Regina Symphony Orchestra. Tanya

was the driving force in the creation of Sistema Winnipeg and

oversaw the program’s success into its fourth year. We are

tremendously thankful to Tanya for her vision, dedication and

energy and know she will make a positive impact in Regina.

2015 NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL

This year’s New Music Festival was another exciting

event that pushed the boundaries of creative thinking.

As this year’s theme question asked,“Are you ready?”, it

was a weeklong event devoted to exploring music that

lays outside the academic realm. This creative vision,

spearheaded by co-curators Alexander Mickelthwate

and Matthew Patton, led to the creation of a program

that featured many innovative artists of varying genres:

John Zorn, James Tenney, Georg Friedrich Haas and

John Luther Adams, among others. As a result, this

year’s NMF programming enabled us to reach new

audiences of various demographics, many of whom

have never attended our event before, and saw the

creation of many new partnerships.

The opening concert presented this thesis, showcasing

both the famed Arditti Quartet - in Wolfgang Rihm’s

dazzling Dithyrambe for string quartet and orchestra –

and Haas’s take on Mendelssohn in Traum in des

Sommers Nacht. The closing program represented

similar contrasts with Adams’s Pulitzer prize-winning

Become Ocean, Mason Bates’s The B-Sides and NMF

favourite Giya Kancheli’s Dixi.

The rest of the week presented music by composers who

represented similar contrasts and also represented this

philosophical thinking:

Owen Pallett (CAN) – Canadian singer/songwriter who is now

making a name for himself as an orchestral composer

(Breathing Black Ground)

Andrew Norman (USA) – quickly establishing himself as a

major contemporary classical composer.

Caroline Shaw (USA) – 2013 Pulitzer prize-winning composer

of the work presented (Partita for 8 Voices)

This collection of artists allowed us to reach a new demographic

audience that was new to our Festival. They represented an

“underground” scene that has existed for many years and are only

now being connected to our annual event.

As the counterpoint to this, programmed alongside these works

was music by composers who represented the current

contemporary new music scene:

Christopher Rouse (Symphony No. 3)

Frederic Rzewski (The People United Will Never Be Defeated,

performed by its dedicatee Ursula Oppens)

Larysa Kuzmenko

Giya Kancheli

Wolfgang Rihm

Page 17: 2014-2015 Annual Report - Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

In addition, we were proud to present as our guest artists the

world-renowned Arditti Quartet. Their participation at our

Festival reinforced our position as a world-class event that

features critically acclaimed artists.

This year, we continued our new Pop Nuit series, in partnership

with Westend Cultural Centre, that consisted of two post-concert

performances by artists from the pop/rock genre that

successfully brought together a collection of artists whose music

explores the boundaries between pop and experimentalism: Julia

Ryckman and Rob Menard's 20 Guitar Circular Wall Of Angelic

Sound. The music and visuals they presented represented the

latest developments and experiments being made today from

within their musical sphere. Being that this new series was highly

successful with the local youths, we held these events at larger

venues this year that caters to this demographic audience while

expanding its marketing campaign.

Thus, our Festival had created many opportunities for our local

artists whose artistic practice lie beyond musical categorizations.

In other words, we had brought cutting edge artistic

developments to our receptive audience while serving the needs

of the artists, which thereby nurtures the health of our creative

community. This is one of the fundamental ways of ensuring the

growth of our musical culture.

In addition, we have maintained our commitment to our outreach

programs. One of our mandates is to showcase many of these

ensembles at our New Music Festival by way of performance

opportunities. They play an important component to our event

and have always added to the Festival experience while enriching

our local music scene. This year we were proud to feature a

concert that showcased many of the student and local wind

ensembles. Ensembles featured were: The Brandon University New

Music Ensemble, The University of Manitoba Opera Theatre, The U

of M and BU Percussion Ensembles, and The U of M eXperimental

Improv Ensemble. As a result, our outreach events were all very

successful and had brought in a large number of audiences and

participating artists. Pre and post-concert panel discussions were

presented by composers and special guests.

In conclusion, this year’s NMF programming pushed the

creative boundaries further than ever before. By committing

ourselves to a theme that highlights artists and music that

lie beyond the concert classical realm, we successfully

maintained our “thinking-outside-of-the-box” philosophy,

which has been the foundation of our creative process.

Thus, we brought in many new audiences while continuing

our role as a voice for the Canadian and internationa music

community.

REPORT OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

16 I WSO Annual Report – 2014-2015 Season

I am pleased to be able to report the eighth

consecutive annual operating surplus for the

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (“WSO”). The

excess of revenue over expenditures for the year

ended May 31, 2015 was $86,395. Net Assets

totaled $484,752, including the Operating Fund

balance of $284,752.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s Endowment

Fund, held by the Winnipeg Foundation, had a

market value of approximately $6,900,000 at May

31, 2015 an increase of over $500K in the year.

During the year, the contributions to the Fund

were $23,299; of which $17,512 was matching funds received through the

Endowment Incentives Component of the Canada Cultural Investment Fund from

Canadian Heritage related to contributions made during the 2014 financial year.

Total revenue overall increased by $50,742. Concert revenue increased by $292,984

(9%) from that generated in 2014; the combination of increased number of tickets

sold as well as an increased average price contributed to improved subscription

concert sales by $94,668; holding more special concerts increased concert revenue

by $117,729.

Private Sector revenue decreased by $145,949 (6%) from 2014 and Fundraising

revenue decreased by $323,134 (13%). These changes are related to the funds raised

for the 2014 New York trip to Carnegie Hall.

Expenditures were held overall to similar levels for 2014 and only increased by

$5,393.

I would like to thank the members of the Finance committee and WSO staff for their

work during the year.
