    BUILDING ON BESTTHE

  • Thank you to all of the volunteers for

supporting figure skating in the Section!

  • Creating the Edge for Life

  • Dear Members of Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut,

Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section continues to be an effective and efficient organization dedicated to inspiring our members to embrace the joys of skating. The Board of Directors has dedicated this year to inte-grating Skate Canada’s Strategic Plan 2014-2018 which is focused on moving the Section forward in five Strategic Imperatives.

From assisting clubs with implementation of the new CanSkate program to providing our Adult skaters oppor-tunities to skate at competitions, we, the Section, have made great strides in encouraging our members to be Active for Life through skating. The Section remains committed to the implementation of Skate Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model by providing competitive opportunities for younger skaters via the STAR com-petition model, in addition to encouraging our athletes to transition along the athlete pathway. We also rec-ognized the important part our coaches, officials and volunteers play by providing seminars and other training opportunities this season.

Our competitive skaters enjoyed success at the 2015 Skate Canada Challenge (Junior Ladies Gold Medalist - Tri-ena Robinson, Senior Men’s Bronze Medalist - Keegan Messing) and the 2015 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships this year. It was also a Canada Winter Games year and our Section skaters brought home 3 med-als (Bronze in Novice Pairs, 2 Gold in Special Olympics categories.) We are extremely proud of all of our athletes including 2014 Alberta Junior Female Athlete of the Year - Kaetlyn Osmond!

Officials and coaches continue to play a large role in skaters’ success at all levels. Understanding the importance of skaters’ success, the Section provided professional development opportunities to all coaches. The Section remains committed to the recruitment and retention of our officials as it is essential to the Section’s capacity to deliver programs and services to our members. Finally, during the past year in regards to technology, the Section improved the website, while also increasing our presence on social media.

The Skate Canada brand was well-represented at all 15 Section events throughout the 2014-2015 season. Un-derstanding the importance of branding, the Section office effectively embodied the Skate Canada brand at both the Sectional and STARSkate Championships.

The sport of figure skating is all about building and maintaining successful relationships. A big part of the Sec-tion’s success this past season can be attributed to the partnerships with Skate Canada, the Alberta Sport Con-nection and in particular the Alberta Figure Skating Foundation who is celebrating their 40th anniversary. Fur-thermore, the Section’s appreciation is extended to our sponsors: Calgary Professional Skate Service, Triple Flip, and Duso’s for their continued support. With the help of these sponsors, the Section has been able to remain fiscally viable while providing programs and services to our members.

In closing, I wish to thank my fellow Board members, the Section Office and our volunteers for their time and commitment to our organization. Your efforts make us strong and will make our future mission to be recognized as a leader in the delivery of skating programs a reality.

    Sincerely,

    Sharon DingleChair

Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut’s overall membership continues to increase. In 2014-2015, this increase was primar-ily due to an increase in CanSkate membership. The percentage of male members remained consistent in 2014-2015 at 33%. In 2014-2015, 26% of the Section’s membership was male skaters age 10 and under in CanSkate.

In 2014-2015, the Section had 165 clubs and skating schools, a decrease of two from 2013-2014. The Section had 28 synchronized skating teams in 2014-2015 and 530 adult skaters. The Section welcomed the Pembina Skating Club to provide the CanSkate program to their commu-nity.

  • EventsFrom the 2014 Annual Convention, General Meeting (ACGM) and Awards Banquet in Edmonton to the 2015 STARSkate & Adult Championships in Calgary, the Events Committee had a very busy and exciting year!

The 2014 ACGM hosted workshops for coaches, skaters, and parents. It continued to educate and inform coach-es, skaters, parents and club members on the new CanSkate program and STAR Pilot, along with a fantastic key-note presentation from Dr. Vicki Harber on developing young athletes. The Awards Banquet was a resounding suc-cess, starting off with the always entertaining Triple Flip Fashion Show starring some of the Section’s top skaters, followed by the entertainment of Jamie Salé and Susan Humphreys as the Masters of Ceremonies for the evening.

Throughout the 2014-2015 competition season, there were 15 competitions for AdultSkate, SynchroSkate, STARSkate, Spe-cial Olympics and CompetitiveSkate competitors. The Goldstar Skating Academy and Calgary Winter Club co-hosted the 2015 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships. Their local organizing committee, lead by Gitti Heske and Bobbie Kelly, provided a high quality experience for all competitors. The Alberta Figure Skating Foundation continued to support the development of skaters by being the presenting partner of the STARSkate & Adult Championships. The 2015 STARSkate & Adult Championships, hosted by the Thorncliffe-Greenview Skating Club, provided many memorable events, including the inclusion of Special Olympics events. Calgary played host to the 2015 Skate Canada Adult Figure Skating Championships, one of the best attended Adult Championships yet. A huge thank you to the Local Organizing Committee, especially the local organizing committee Chair Gitti Heske, for hosting a great event!

The Section, through its Event Technician Sub-Committee, continues to explore opportunities to use technology to in-crease the quality and exposure of competitions and major events in the Section. In 2014-2015, 6 events were live streamed and archived. More event technicians and live streamers received training throughout the season, including at-tending the Skate Canada Adult Figure Skating Championships to learn new ideas and processes to bring to Section events.

Synchronized SkatingThis season was the second year of the new 2 day format for the Section Synchro Development Camp. Held Septem-ber 13 - 14, 2014 in Calgary, the camp was attended by 29 coaches, 42 skaters, 8 officials and 2 club administrators. We were pleased to have world class coaches Angela Ma-lorni and Marilyn Langlois of Les Supremes as facilitators for this extremely valuable and popular camp. The online video monitoring program for Section teams took place November 1 – December 12, 2014. This very popular program allowed teams to receive feedback from our top level officials. Monitoring for teams who qualified for the National Championships took place at the conclusion of Mountain Regionals. Teams representing the Section at the National Championships were Black Gold Open (Calgary Synchro-nized Skating Club), Edmonton Edge Intermediate (Edmon-ton Synchronized Skating Club) and Solstice Intermediate (Carstairs Skating Club). Athletes received hats and infinity scarves as a gift from the Section as congratulations on their achievement and representing the Section at the National level. The National Synchronized Skating Summit focus was to engage the skating community in discussions specific to the discipline, discuss ways to increase interest and mem-bership and meeting the needs of the athletes.81 synchro skaters participated in the Skate Canada Adult Figure Skating Championships, April 3-5, 2015 in Calgary. Recreational SkatingThe continued focus of the committee has been to support clubs in the required implementation of the new CanSkate program. CanSkate National Resource team member Tammy Greidanus presented a complete on ice and off ice planning workshop, August 23, 2014, in Edmonton. Partic-ipant feedback indicated the workshop was so valuable it should be offered yearly.Skate Canada coordinated a national CanSkate club sup-port initiative to identify clubs in need. CanSkate National Resource team member, Leona Boyle, was assigned a club to assist in our Section.Tammy and Leona continue to be available to assist clubs by direct contact and the CanSkate Connection feature within ‘In the Loop’ provides guidance and tips and tricks for program implementation and success.

Athletes with a Disability (AWAD)Pilot clubs Okotoks SC, Lethbridge SC and Extreme Edge SC continue to actively run programs for skaters with a disability. Through the initiative we have also been able to provide clubs with financial support on an individual basis. In particular, connec-tions were made between members of the Alberta Sport & Recreation Asso-ciation for the Blind and CanSkate programs. The Section office has been able to connect skaters with clubs and facilitate the opportuni-ty for this group of athletes to participate in the sport. Special ‘In the Loop’ features continue to share the success stories of these skaters and their clubs. The short-term outcomes for this initiative are being achieved in increasing awareness, opportunities for skaters and club capacity to include skaters. We continue to help

clubs with coaching, adaptive equipment, club, and event support. We are very passionate about the AWAD program and are in the process of applying for more grant funding to allow this initiative to continue for four more years.

Special OlympicsAs part of the AWAD initiative, the Section was able to contract Special Olympics Alberta specialists to produce an educational/promotional video. This video will help encourage consistent performance standards, assist both Special Olympics and Skate Canada coaches, and train Skate Canada judges. It was an exciting competitive season for our Special Olym-pic skaters. We were thrilled to have two athletes compete at the Canada Winter Games, February 13 – March 1, 2015 in Prince George, BC. Both skaters earned gold medals in their respective catergories; Figure Skating Special Olym-pics Singles Level III female, Meg Ohsada, GOLD and Figure Skating Special Olympics Singles Level II female, JorDen Tyson, GOLD.The Section was also represented by 16 athletes at the 2015 Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games in Grande Prairie, February 20-22.The 2015 Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games Solo Dance Champion, Benjamin Maeseele (Calalta FSC) was one of the performers in the March 21, 2015 Section Showcase in High River.

  • Regions

The Regions Committee continues to educate clubs on implementing the

    new CanSkate program.

The Region Representatives work within their respective regions to provide support to their local clubs and members to successfully provide test days, workshops, seminars, carnivals and competitions. Support is also provided by assisting Club Boards with policies, procedures and general membership questions.

The full implementation of the CanSkate program in September 2014 was a key focus for the Regions Commit-tee, to educate and support their clubs and to create awareness of the new program.

Annual surveys are conducted within the Regions to gather information and feedback from their clubs and members. This feedback provides direction for the development of club tools.

The Committee continued to create awareness to celebrate the Duso’s Helping Hand of the Month Awards and the Duso’s Male and Female Skaters of the Month.

The annual awards program celebrates the achievements of volunteers, skaters, coaches and officials. The awareness of the awards program increased this season resulting in over 120 nominations, and 41 Section clubs participating.

Clubs hosted 14 CanSkate Element Events. 110 carnivals were held to celebrate skater

    and club achievements
