SURVEY OVERVIEW | EMPLOYMENT DATA | GRADUATE SCHOOL DATA | EMPLOYMENT & GRADUATE SCHOOL SUCCESS RATES | INTERNSHIP INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
Each year the Walter Center for Career Achievement surveys graduating seniors from the College of Arts + Sciences regarding their post-graduation plans. The 2014-2015 survey closely adhered to the standardized data collection process set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). To view NACE’s standards and protocols report, please visit http://www.naceweb.org/uploadedFiles/Pages/advocacy/first-destination-survey-standards-and-protocols.pdf.
The information collected through this project provides valuable insight into the wide variety of opportunities available to graduates of the College of Arts + Sciences (the College), as well as challenges facing current graduates.
Questions about this report can be directed to Joe Lovejoy, Director of Career Services for the Walter Center for Career Achievement ([email protected]).
4 First Destination Report | 2014-2015 Academic Year Bachelor’s Degree Graduates
SURVEY OVERVIEW | EMPLOYMENT DATA | GRADUATE SCHOOL DATA | EMPLOYMENT & GRADUATE SCHOOL SUCCESS RATES | INTERNSHIP INFORMATION
METHODS OVERVIEWFor the purpose of the first destination survey, graduates of the College were defined as undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program within the College who had applied for graduation one month prior to graduation commencement ceremonies for the given graduation term. This definition produced a survey panel of 3,001 students- 379 August 2014 graduates, 490 December 2014 graduates, and 2,132 May 2015 graduates.
Data were collected from the 2014-2015 Academic Year (AY14-15) graduates using an online survey instrument (Qualtrics). All students were invited to complete the survey through emails from both Walter Center staff and from their academic advisor. Emails were sent beginning three weeks prior to commencement ceremonies and continued weekly until one month following commencement. This effort concluded Phase I of data collection. Following Phase I, students reporting still seeking employment, still seeking continuing education and non-respondents students were surveyed once more beginning five months following graduation commencement and continued for one month as Phase II of data collection.
In accordance with NACE data standards and protocols, first destination outcome data were also collected from secondary sources, including phone calls to student families, outreach to faculty and staff in academic departments, internal searches within the IU system for course enrollment or employment, and data mining social media outlets such as LinkedIn. This expansion of data sources has increased a 78% response rate for the May 2013 graduating class to a 93% knowledge rate for the May 2014 class and a 91% knowledge rate for May 2015.
The 2014-2015 Academic Year also marked the Walter Center’s first effort to collect first destination outcomes for all graduation terms. Previously, only May graduation classes were solicited. During this first year, phase I and II were successfully collected for both August and May graduating classes. Only phase I was collected for the December graduating class while a vacant Assessment staff position was filled. The absence of phase II data collection should be considered when interpreting both December 2014 and AY14-15 averaged results in this report.

DISTRIBUTION OF POST-GRADUATION PLANS
The illustration on the adjoining page represents student responses to the primary question of the survey:
“Which of the following best describes your primary status after graduation?”
Across all three graduation terms, 2,200 students responded to this question through the survey. An additional 330 destinations were gathered through methods listed in the Overview section, creating a total of 2,530 known first destination outcomes.
Overall, 45.8% (n=1,159) of students responded that they were employed either part-time or full-time post-graduation, 22.3% (n=564) were admitted to graduate school, 17.2% (n=435) were seeking employment, and 7.7 % (n=196) were seeking continuing education at the time of survey completion. These data include information from both phases of data collection.

Those students who indicated that they had secured full-time employment were asked to indicate their level of satisfaction with the job they secured. Due to the nature of a liberal arts and sciences degree, it is common for students to enter occupations that are not directly related to their chosen undergraduate course of study. Therefore, satisfaction with the job offer is believed to be a more accurate measure of successful placement than the relationship between major and job. The illustration below indicates that 78.3% of students who secured full-time employment were very satisfied or satisfied with the job offer they accepted. 80% of May 2014 graduates reported satisfaction within those same two categories. If only May 2015 graduates are considered, 81.7% of graduates were either Very Satisfied of Satisfied with their job, an increase over the previous May.
In the survey, respondents were asked to select a statement that best described their position in reference to personal career goals. This question was added to supplement data gathered from job satisfaction to create a multifaceted approach to measure successful placement. The illustration below indicates that 65.4% of respondents believe that their full-time position directly aligns with their career goals. As compared to 69% for May 2014 graduates last year. For year-over-year comparison, 70.8% of May 2015 graduates reported that their accepted position directly aligned to their career goals.

Referral Type
The 2014-2015 survey included a question focused on students’ use of job search strategies . Any student reporting that they had successfully secured a full-time position was prompted to respond to the following question: “In the space provided below, please tell us a little bit about how you found this position.” Responses to this question were analyzed and coded based on sets of common response themes. These themes were then organized into a list of categories, which are listed in the table below. Please note that all potentially identifying information was removed from the sample student responses to protect student confidentiality.
Student responses indicated that Previous Internship Provider and Career Fair were the most common sources of employment opportunity for graduates accepting positions, followed by Family or Friend Outside IU and Internet Job Board. May 2014 respondents indicated that Internet Job Board , Family or Friend Outside IU, and Networking with Professionals were the most common were the most common sources of employment.

SURVEY OVERVIEW | EMPLOYMENT DATA | GRADUATE SCHOOL DATA | EMPLOYMENT & GRADUATE SCHOOL SUCCESS RATES | INTERNSHIP INFORMATION
INTERNSHIP INFORMATIONThe following survey question was used to gather information on the number of internships completed by graduates. Follow-up questions collected information on internship site, location, and name.“Think back to your time as an IU student. For the purpose of this survey an internship is considered to be any position you held where you worked at least 10 hours a week for at least two consecutive months in a field or industry related to your career interests.”
The illustration below provides an overview of the number of completed internships and internship site locations reported by AY14-15 graduates. Survey data indicate that 36.5% (n=830) of respondents did not complete any internships, and 63.5% (n=1,443) of respondents completed at least one internship. 64.6% of May 2015 graduates reported completing at least one internship, compared to 59% of May 2014 graduates. Overall, 44.4% of AY14-15 graduates reported completing one internship. 31.9% completed two, 14.5% completed three, 4.7% completed four, and 4.5% completed five or more internships.
